A Hideous Hybrid! Folk Horror and Vermont Gothic combine in...
LAKE MONSTERS!
Joseph A. Citro's classic tale of unrelenting terror, originally from Warner Books, resurfaces for longtime fans and a new generation of readers!
Now Bat Books offers this elegant collector's edition containing the original novel's full unexpurgated text, plus over 60 pages of exciting, never-before-seen illustrations by renowned artist Michael Zulli (Sandman, Puma Blues), Lovecraftian lore, cryptozoological data, photographs, history, insightful background essays, and an in-depth interview conducted by Vermont horror writer Daniel Mills.
Downsized from his job and dumped by his girlfriend, Harrison Allen dreams of a fresh start. He relocates to a remote Lake Champlain island where he intends to prove that a mysterious creature, unknown to science, lurks in the waters surrounding his new home. What could possibly go wrong?
Take it from real-life cryptozoologist and maritime archaeologist Joseph W. Zarzynski (in Strange Magazine), "...the author blends a potion of cryptozoology, Forteana, and old-fashioned sleep-shattering fear... a kind of sweet poetry of horror!"
WARNING : The great danger of hunting monsters is that you never know what you'll find!
Picked this up on my first (certainly not last) trip to Vermont. I thought it looked so cool and always wanted to read more stories about Vermont lore and Champ! Who doesn’t love a sea monster?
If you go into this wanting Champ action…uhm…don’t do that. Turns out the titular Lake Monsters are more like…metaphorical and…not living in the lake. It is the kinda book to have its cake and eat it too—not sure if that decision really does much on a deeper level but it was cute.
Annoying, boring main character, aside I came away from this book really charmed. Harrison isn’t a *terrible* character, but I spent the last 20 years of my life as a dude searching for a purpose so I don’t really find those characters very interesting. It’s a neat, old-school small town folk horror tale. It even includes a little map! Who doesn’t love a little map? We’ve got a well-realized community, mysterious little characters and atmosphere, and some pretty creepy scenes of encroaching dread.
Would recommend, especially if you’re a fan of Maynard’s House (, Jenna)!
