بيرل بك الكاتبة الامريكية الحائزة على جائزة نوبل لكتاباتها عن معاناة شعوب لا تنتمى لهم كما هو معروف عنها حيث تدور معظم رواياتها عن الصين بحكم نشاتها مع والدها الذى كان يعمل مبشرا فى هذه البلاد، وكذلك الهند التى تدور فيها احداث هذه الرواية فى فترة الاحتلال البريطانى وما شهدتة هذة الفترة من مجاعات واوبئة، والصدام بين قوى الاحتلال وجماعات ( السادو ) المتطلعة للاستقلال الداعية للمقاومة السلمية وتدخل رأس المال المتمثل فى العائلة الامريكية محور احداث هذه الرواية من خلال ثلاث أجيال مختلفة

She is best known for The Good Earth, the best-selling novel in the United States in 1931 and 1932 and which won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1938, Buck became the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China" and for her "masterpieces", two memoir-biographies of her missionary parents.
Buck was born in West Virginia, but in October 1892, her parents took their 4-month-old baby to China. As the daughter of missionaries and later as a missionary herself, Buck spent most of her life before 1934 in Zhenjiang, with her parents, and in Nanjing, with her first husband. She and her parents spent their summers in a villa in Kuling, Mount Lu, Jiujiang, and it was during this annual pilgrimage that the young girl decided to become a writer. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, then returned to China. From 1914 to 1932, after marrying John Lossing Buck she served as a Presbyterian missionary, but she came to doubt the need for foreign missions. Her views became controversial during the Fundamentalist–Modernist controversy, leading to her resignation. After returning to the United States in 1935, she married the publisher Richard J. Walsh and continued writing prolifically. She became an activist and prominent advocate of the rights of women and racial equality, and wrote widely on Chinese and Asian cultures, becoming particularly well known for her efforts on behalf of Asian and mixed-race adoption.

بيرل بك تكتب عن المبادئ التي يتكلم عنها الانسان ويؤمن بها عن بُعد فإذا اقتربت من حياته الشخصية تخلى عنها

This was not Pearl S. Buck's best effort and I only persevered with it because it is a book club book (chosen, I think without being read beforehand). This is the story of 4 generations of MacArds who are wealthy and travel to India as Christian missionaries. It starts with the New York patriarch being widowed and traveling with his rudderless son to India for a vacation. Said son finds his place in the world starting a Christian school for poor Indians. The book takes place in the waning days of the British Empire and the whole thing was more than slightly racist. The cover of the Pocket Books Cardinal edition has a drawing of a contemplative blond in a blue dress and underneath the tag line: "Livy was a missionary's daughter forbidden to marry her native lover". All you need to know to skip this piece of dreck which was originally published in 1953.

بيرل بك تفضح أكذوبة المساوة..
إنها تصدم القارئ بالحقيقة العارية..
تلقي في وجهه ثوب الواقع ليقف مندهشا عاجزا عن الرد..
دافيد ابن ثري أمريكي يترك والده و عمل والده ليذهب إلى الهند في مهمة إنسانية خيرية لمحاولة مساعدة أبناء الهند الفقراء.. كلام جميل..
تيد ابن ديفيد يقرر أيضا أن ينخرط في مساعدة الفقراء الهنود.. ولكنه بدلا من الاكتفاء بالمساعدة مثل والده و يعيش حياته الطبيعية كثري بين الهنود فإن الابن يقرر أن يعيش في قرية هندية فقيرة كأي هندي فقير... كلام أجمل..
لكن كل هذا يطرح على المحك عندما تقرر حفيدة ديفيد الزواج بهندي.. هل يتقبل والدها هذا أم لا؟
هل شعارات المساواة بين البشر و احترام جميع الألوان و الأعراق هى شعارات حقيقية؟
هل بالفعل مساعدة الفقراء هو واجب حقيقي ناتج عن اقتناع الأغنياء بحق الفقراء أم أنه منحة يتفضل بها الأغنياء على الفقراء؟؟
بيرل بك -وانا معها في هذا- تؤكد على حقيقة أن الأغنياء يقومون بعمل الخير فقط من أجل أن يشعروا بمشاعر أفضل تجاه أنفسهم.. حتى لا يشعروا بأي نوع من الذنب من تكديس الأموال في البنوك حتى لو تخطى الحد الذي قد يصرفونه في ألف سنة!! ..
إنهم مستعدون تماما لمساعدة الفقراء .. طالما أن تلك المساعدة لن تؤثر على أوضاعهم الاجتماعية..
إنهم مستعدون تماما للمساعدة مثلما يساعد أي شخص كلبا ضالا بترك طعاما له على قارعة الطريق ولكن لا يجب ان يفكر للحظة في أخذه ليعيش في منزله.. فهو كلب "ضال" و سيظل دائما كلبا "ضالا"! .. أما الكلاب التي تؤخذ للمنزل هى تلك الكلاب التي يدفع فيها المرء أموالا لشرائها.. تلك التي تجعله يظهر بمظهر اجتماعي لائق!
لا.. بيرل بك لا تتحدث عن العلاقة بين الغرب و الشرق.. باعتبار أن الغرب هو الجانب الغني و الشرق هو الجانب الفقير.. بيرل بك تتحدث عن اللاقة بين الأغنياء و الفقراء في كل بقاع الأرض..
هنا مثلا في مصر سنجد نفس الشيء.. لا اختلاف على الإطلاق.. نتحدث عن المساواة بين الناس .. نتحدث عن عدم وجود فوارق بين الغني و الفقير و لكن مع ذلك فلنر إذا كان شخصا غنيا سيتقبل أن تتزوج ابنته من شخص فقير.. الآية القرآنية لدينا تم نسيانها و تحولت إلى مبدأ آخر.. الغني لا ينكح إلا غنية أو من الحكام.. و الفقير لا ينكح إلا فقيرة أو مريضة.. هكذا هى الحياة الاجتماعية في مصر.. و من يقول غير هذا فهو ينافق نفسه..
بيرل بك كعادتها تركز على الجانب الانساني في الشخصيات.. لا تحاول أن تفتعل تصرفات أو أفعالا غير طبيعية.. لا تحاول أن ترسم صور كاريكتورية.. أو صور أسطورية.. لكنها ترسم شخصيات عندما تقرأها تجد نفسك تقول "هذا الشخص يشبه شخصا أعرفه!".. إنها تكتب عن عامة الناس.. تكتب من وحى تجربة معايشة خصبة للحياة و ليست من وحى خيال جامح.. وهذا ما يجعل رواياتها دائما ما تمس شيئا ما لدى القراء..
أخيرا.. ملحوظةهامشية.. الترجمة العربية لدي معنونة "عذارى المعبد"... طبعا العنوان لا علاقة له بالعنوان الأصلي.. كذلك كلمة "عذارى المعبد" لم تذكر إلا في سطر واحد وفي سياق يجعلها أكثر هامشية من مرور ذبابة على غلاف الكتاب! .. و هو الأسلوب الذي كانت تتبعه نوادي الفيديو القديمة عندما تعنون الأفلام بكلمات لا علاقة لها بالاسم الأصلي فقط لتجذب إليها جمهورا من المراهقين!

A prime example of the conflicted Buck, at one and the same time an advocate for women's rights and human rights, and also conservative 50's American, this story of a 3rd generation missionary who can't quite come to terms with his daughter falling in love with an "educated" Indian doctor and elects to return to the USA in order to thwart the marriage, fails to ring true. After all Ted has chosen to live in a remote village with his wife serving the local population but only so far, his charity will only go so far. Didn't ring true to me and her characterisation's as a whole failed to approach some reasonable dimensionality in this weak effort.

Nice multi-generational story of an American family in India. I liked the theme that each successive generation becomes more open to the other culture and less prejudiced. Progress comes but it also takes time. And it's okay that people also have limits to how much they can change or accept. Another interesting theme was the relationships between the married couples and whether a practical marriage relationship or a romantic marriage relationship is best. She doesn't seem to show a happy combination where both are present.

Read this for book club.
Ended up skimming through the book. Too much introspection, too many discussions of religion and spirituality, too much dissecting human emotions and reasons for their actions. Not my cup of chai tea.

Compré este libro porque estaba barato en una librería de segunda. Me costó como tres o cuatro intentos el quererlo terminar. En los resúmenes lo describían como "una bella historia de amor". Pero pienso que eso puede ser malintepretado. No es una historia romática, creo. Pero sí es una historia "sobre el amor". El amor familiar, fraternal, espiritual, de pareja, el amor patriótico inclusive. Habla sobre David Hardworth MacArd y su hijo. Y el hijo de su hijo. Y la hija de áquel. Y cómo a través de las distintas generaciones van pasando de ser héroes a ser villanos en cierta manera. Cómo cambia el corazón del hombre, cómo se moldea a través de sus circunstancias de vida y sus decisiones.
Comienza en un post 1929 norteamericano. Se va trasladando hacia la India dominada por el Imperio Británico y va dándonos referencia de una India esclava que conoce la esperanza en Gandhi. Los protagonistas son misioneros cristianos poco convencionales, que buscan abrirse paso y "salvar" a la gente a través de su religión y la reeducación de las generaciones. Los relatos sobre cosas de la India de repente son hermosos, de repente son tristes, de repente son profundos y delicados.
Muchas cosas me hicieron pensar. Es un libro que me hizo pensar. El final es algo triste. Pero también esperanzador. La próxima generación, de haberse narrado, quizás hubiera podido dar el salto que no se pudo dar al final de la historia.
Siento bonito haber encontrado a Pearl S. Buck sin recomendación de nadie. Me gustó mucho su libro.

تصف الرواية الحياة فى الهند من خلال تعاقب ثلاث أجيال أمريكية
كنت منشغله بالتطوير والعمل على النهوض بها
الرواية تتبنى النظرة الامريكية لدول العالم الثالث
من حيث انها بلدان غنية لكنها تحتاج ان تظل تحت السيادة الامريكية
لتنهض وتتقدم ويظهر ذلك من خلال دايفيد الذى رغم حبه الشديد للهند
و ايمانه بواجبه الانسانى تجاه اهلها الا انه يعود الى امريكا بعد حصول الهند على استقلالها على يد غاندى
كذلك تطرح الكتابة التناقض العنصرى من خلال شخصية " تيد " الذى عاش مؤمنا بالمساواة بين البشر و افنى عمره فى تعليم الفقراء من خلال جامعة ابيه
والمدارس التى انشاها هو ايضا
الا انه رفض حب ابنته الكبرى من طبيب هندى و على اثر ذلك حمل اسرته ورحل عن الهند

ثلاث أجيال و اربعة قصص حب .
تبدأ في تخلي اوليفيا عن حياة الرفاه لتلحق بديفيد في رحلتة صوب الأنسانية , ثم طفلهما الوحيد تيد , يكبر و يفشل في زواجه من ابنة الحاكم الأنكليزي هناك , لأن الأبنة اقصت مشاعرها تجاه المركز و المسؤليات التي تحملها تجاه ابيها و وطنها ثم ما لبثت ان تزوجت اب تيد و الذي هو ديفيد ... و تزوج تيد من روثي التي تخلت ايضاً عن حياتها كي تلحق بتيد الذي اختار درب البساطة و الزهد و مساعدة الأنسانية يأتي الجيل الثالث بأبنه تيد ليفي و التي تجد نفسها تعشق شاباً هنديا ترعرع في تلك البلدة التي استقرت العائلة بها .. و لكن تقف رغبة الوالد " تيد " و الوالدة " روثي " أمام هذا الزواج كي يفشل و تسافر العائلة عائدة صوب امريكا ..
الرواية بسيطة الأحداث جميلة و مرحة بعيدة عن الملل و الاسهاب في التفاصيل ... وصف لبعض العادات الهندية ..
عذارى المعبد .. ردّه الكاتب لطقوس بعض الرهبان في الهند من اقامة علاقات مع فتيات عذروات كي ينقلوا قبس لهن من ارواح الآله ..
نجد موقف الأنسان من التضحيات الشخصية التي تقف في آخر الأمر عند اطفاله .. بدافع اللون الذي رغم كل الأفكار التي يحملها عن المساواة لم يتصور ابنته البيضاء بين يدي شاب هندي ملون ..
في النهاية هي رواية مشوقة و لطيفة ..

Good story set in India which covers 4 generations of the MacCard family. Wealthy David MacCard establishes a seminary for Christian missionary workers in India in honor of his late wife. His son David becomes a missionary in India and, later, his grandson Ted opts to live a spartan life of prayer, reflection and service in a remote Indian village. Ted’s daughter, Livy, falls in love with Jatin, who was born and raised in India. Even though the MacCard family has been involved in Indian life and culture for many, many years, and have become knowledgeable and respectful of that culture, when Livy wants to marry Jatin, all of the old prejudices regarding inter-racial marriages surface. Central themes found in this book are the extreme poverty found in India, the increasing population, the growing anti-British sentiment and the rising popularity of Gandhi. This was an interesting and informative part of the book.

Buck was the first woman to receive a Nobel prize in literature with her culturally sensitive tales of ordinary people around the world. This one is set in India and involves three generations of a British families relationship with the culture of the people and their personal relationships with them. A warm and fulfilling multi generational love story set in the US and India, Buck is at her best weaving plot around faith, human nature, politics and culture. I savored each generation's moral struggles and my respect for the author grew as she captured the soul and spirit of individuals, countries, and families. I savored the ending and was sorry to turn the last page.

Pearl Buck’s writing is always a pleasure to read. She captures cultural nuance and in such a noncritical way describes differences. Her stories are interesting and full bodied and never dated. This one is another winner.

Not very good, but I didn't want to be a quitter, so I finished it.
After finishing a riveting fiction set in India and hearing that many of the descriptions in it were inaccurate, I was interested to learn more about the country and its history. This was the only ebook I could get immediately from my library that had anything to do with India, so I checked it out and started reading immediately. This book was not very well written and lacked a strong thesis, so I was surprised to read about all the author's success at the back. This woman was a big deal. Perhaps her other works pull the reader in better--this is certainly not a page-turner. Four generations of a family, none more loveable than the last, have various levels of commitment to the idea of improving India's resources and religion. Some are more focused on physical things like preventing famine and digging wells or education. Some are interested in equality. None of them actually preach; one even gives comparable weight to Hindu religious works. Spoiler: Despite generations of interaction with and service to the people of India, the last father mentioned in the line refuses to give his daughter to marry the wonderful Indian man she loves (she is 16, but you're clearly supposed to side with the couple). I don't even feel like it's much of a spoiler because of how matter-of-factly everything in the whole book is related and how little connection is built between the characters and the reader. Pretty anticlimactic at the end, really.
The most valuable thought in the book, IMO, is this: "It is very difficult to reach the ultimate of one's religion." How true this is. Though I espouse Christianity, to fully practice everything Jesus taught is HARD. It is a daily, sometimes hourly, effort. Even the apostle Paul said he "counted not himself to have attained," but labored daily to receive the reward (Philippians 3:12). True discipleship requires submitting my EVERY action, desire, and thought to His will, not mine. May we be better than the father in the book, who is unable to completely surrender his American sensibilities and thereby is found a hypocrite.
Content: The illicit relationship at the very end is the only "adult content" in the book. It was not an emphasized situation. Young children don't wear clothes. There might have been a curse word or two.

el autor me mato a toda gente deosmio 😭, es en parte triste, el libro es interesante a cierto punto, tiene cristianismo y muchos personajes principales, me costó terminarlo debido a que le temia a que me siguieran matando a más personas, más de un mes, cuestión, no me gustó como terminó el libro, ya que hubo separación amorosa de parte del papá de Livy, y que Jaitin, no ponoande su parte, se daba por vencido increíblemente fácil, lo qur me hace pensar que nunca tuvo realmente un amor por Livy, si, era jivenes para casarse, pero 😭, 5.7/10.

الكتاب باختصار بيوضح انه مهما تكلم الاغنياء عن المساواة بين الطبقات ولا فرق بين غني وفقير وابيض واسود وانجليزي وهندي تحت شعار الدين يظهر في الاخر انها مجرد شعارات حتى يشعر الاغنياء بشعور الرضا والتواضع لكن عندما تمس هذه الشعارات حياتهم وابنلئهم تظهر مرة أخرى العنصرية والعنجهية.
