Received a copy of this book from the author, through Juniper Grove Book Solutions, in exchange for an honest review.
I am a huge paranormal fan. While I’ve neglected this genre a little lately, I absolutely adore getting lost in the world of vampires, witches and magic. But I have to admit, my all time favorite paranormal/fantasy creature is none other than the werewolf! So, when I heard that Juniper Grove Book Solutions was hosting the Secrets of the Moon blog tour, I had to get involved. And boy am I glad I did. I’m not sure I would have stumbled across this gem otherwise. I have to hand it to Kristy Centeno, she did a remarkable job with this story. The story was well developed, the werewolf world she created was fascinating and her characters were believable. I enjoy it when an author creates a character that I could pass on the street…maybe they won’t be a werewolf but their mannerisms, their actions, it’s something I could see in DC tomorrow. And let’s not forget the fact that these mannerisms and actions just so happened to belong to a beautiful set of swoon-worthy twins. That’s right, TWINS! Two identical, totally different, hot twins. My. Oh. My. I digress. But…I have to admit…I think what sold me the most was the action. This book was full of it! Yes, there is romance and I definitely enjoyed watching the relationships between these characters grow, but the action sealed the deal. I found myself speed reading through the book, while biting my nails, as I anticipated what would happen next. I love it when a book makes me do that!
Secrets of the Moon starts off on a little bit of a sad note. After drinking one night, Marjorie and her friends decide to go out for a joyride. While Marjorie is less intoxicated than her friends, she is in no way fit to drive. However, after a little bit of peer pressure, she gives in and everyone heads out for a good time. As tragedy strikes after a herd of deer and a large, mysterious animal appear in the road ahead, Marjorie loses control of her car which results in her friends and herself charging through the guardrail and down the embankment at Dead Man’s Curve. Luck was on Marjorie’s side that night though and miraculously she, as well as her friends, survived the crash. However, Angela, Marjorie’s best friend, was left paralyzed and forced into a wheelchair as a result. While Marjorie suffered both physically and emotionally from the crash, her parents also suffered financially. The hospital bills, insurance etc. really add up after a crash like that. It’s talked about multiple times but I still can’t fathom the guilt that Marjorie has been carrying around for the past year after the accident. I can’t imagine what she’s been thinking/feeling but she seems to be going through the motions of life to get by. That is, until Kyran Rousseau and his beautiful family walk onto campus. From the moment Marjorie lays eyes on Kyran, she’s drawn to him. But, much to her disappointment, so is every other girl on campus. He’s beautiful in a way that draws attention and everyone in Wolf Creek Hallow seems to notice. As certain events begin to unfold, Marjorie begins to see that many secrets hide behind those silver eyes; more than she could have ever imagined. As these secrets begin to unravel, her world is turned upside down!
From the very beginning I knew something was different about Marjorie. She’s very intuitive and seems to feel things instead of having to see them. She’s also very brave and impulsive. Multiple times throughout the story she seems to act without thinking. Never in a million years would I have rushed into the woods, at night, to follow a beastly creature. Um no. I’m freaking out if I hear an out of place noise in my locked up apartment. Get me in the woods and I would lose it for sure. Yet Marjorie seems to have no trouble running off to face danger without thinking about her personal safety. Although some of her decisions were questionable, I really like Marjorie. She comes off as a very down to earth character that I can relate to. Even though her mistakes were different from mine, all teenagers make crazy, sometimes extremely stupid decisions that land them in the doghouse with the rents. Overall, I thought Marjorie was a strong female character. She was tough, took up for herself and didn’t run at the hint of danger. I loved that about her. I also didn’t mind that the book was told solely from her point of view. Yes, I would love nothing more than to get inside the heads of the twins but I didn’t necessarily feel like I was missing out by not having it. I can’t wait to read more about Marjorie in the future. I have this need to know exactly why she’s being stalked by werewolves…and why some ‘talents’ have arisen that normal humans don’t posses.
And then there’s Kyran. Oh arrogant, dark and mysterious Kyran. What a puzzle you are! Kyran was definitely a character that took a little getting used to. His brother Alexis, however, I immediately fell in love with. While Kyran’s stand-offish, doesn’t like attention and is a little anti-social, Alexis is just the opposite. Still, I was drawn to him. I wanted to know all of his secrets. What he was thinking. How he felt. What he was. I wanted it all! And yet, when I got a glimpse, I found myself say no. No. NO! What an unexpected turn of events. Bravo Ms. Centeno! Even through it all though, I couldn’t help but to sympathize with Kyran. He’s been dealt a pretty crappy hand and all he wants it to be with the one he loves. Every stolen kiss, glance or “accidental” encounter had me liking Kyran more and more. As his love and protectiveness shines through his hard exterior, I found myself swooning to beat the band. I can’t wait to see how he handles things in future books.
Ok, I definitely need to note here that I loved each and every single one of the characters in this book. From Kyran, to Alexis, Josephine, Marjorie, Simone, Gage and Marquis, I loved them all! I’d love a story or some back stories on each and every one of them but I know that’s a lot. I do hope that in future books we can get a glimpse inside Kyran and/or Alexis’ head though. Although the sole point of view worked for this book, I do wonder what those twins are up to. I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that a love triangle doesn’t develop for Alexis, Kyran and Marjorie. I only say this because, I’m not sure who’s side I’d be on. I actually loved the twins equally but for different reasons. While I loved Kyran’s strength and dark side, I loved Alexis’ flirtatious behavior and easy going attitude. I have a feeling the triangle is brewing though and that we’ll see much more from both Kyran and Alexis with Marjorie in the future. Hey, no complaints here. Twins are always welcome at Down the Rabbit Hole!
After finishing this book, I definitely want more. I need to know how this story continues! I feel like Kristy has succeeded in setting up a series that captivates its readers. I did appreciate that while I was left wanting more, the book did not end with a cliffhanger. While there isn’t a definite conclusion, and things were left a little open-ended since there are certain things left to resolve, I wasn’t left with an “OMG what in the world just happened with no conclusion” face. And that’s definitely a good thing in my book. I love it when books can wrap up on a happy note, and while Secrets of the Moon wasn’t exactly unicorns and sunshine, it was a nice change :)
If you’re looking for an action packed werewolf tale with a little bit of romance and family drama, then I definitely recommend Secrets of the Moon!
