For the first time in a century, the Serpent Isle is free to chart its own course. With Colonel Friel at the helm, the island prepares to defend itself from the coming onslaught – for, as Leona and Lahnos know only too well, the rival powers of the world will not rest until the Serpent Isle has been reclaimed.
With the Gunstian Empire poised to attack from the west, and the Dragon Dominion from the east, the island looks set to fall.
Only the mysterious Demon Witch can save them – but the slayer of King Gahad has vanished, and the Serpent Isle stands alone.

About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

There was a lot more violence and military action than is my preference, but wow, this book was amazing. It begins with an entire force of dragons flying in to attack the Serpent Isle and use it to launch a full-scale war on the Gunstian Empire. The dragons' powers exceed anything we've seen to this point, some of it being the stuff of myth. The Demon Witch's powers are also incredible, but can a single being (spirit?...since we've established she isn't really alive, whatever that means) take on the full might of the dragons?
Told through the eyes of Lahnos, Cisca, and Leona, we get to see very different sides of the military operation. I love Lahnos's friendship with Efizel - it's so contrary to much of what he's known, but shows his character despite the prejudice he's experienced. I also love the way both fight for each other, but Efizel is willing to speak truth when Lahnos is being bullheaded. I like Cisca a lot, too, although, I did miss Lord Kheran. Even if he was a bit of a whiner, I want the baby dragon back! Cisca's loyalty and perseverance in the previous book paid off as she was given increased responsibility now. Her relationship with Bauchlie, which was interesting before, continues to be interesting. I look forward to seeing where that goes in the next book. I also didn't hate him nearly as much this time around, as he proves in several ways that he has honor. I didn't love Leona as much, but she had to do some pretty awful things to stay alive and sacrifice much to protect the people and home she loves. It'll be interesting to see how that works out for her. Reyn didn't get as much on-page time, but when she did, it was glorious. Christopher Mitchell writes characters so well. It makes me want to know them--they're intriguing even when they're unlikable; and then something changes that makes me realize I didn't know much of anything at all. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I received an ARC from the author and have reviewed it willingly.
Demon Witch: An Epic Fantasy Adventure (The Magelands Dominion Book 2), my twenty-second read from prolific author Christopher Mitchell, 448-pages of epic fantasy. When I want to read epic fantasy I first look for author Christopher Mitchell. I look forward to reading more from this author, in fact Death Seer: An Epic Fantasy Adventure (The Magelands Dominion Book 3) is next on my TBR list. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This series is not as good as the original. It has its good parts and its bad parts. I recommend that the author finish up with this series and move on to more interesting endeavors.
ARC Review: 4.5 stars The opening chapter finds the main characters enjoying a (relative) level of peace and adjusting to their new circumstances - the calm before the storm, so to speak. Once the action begins, boy oh boy, it doesn't let up. I became so fully immersed in the story that I forgot my secondary purpose for being given an advanced copy of the book. As with all Christopher Mitchell's books the action begins fairly early on.
The dragons in this new series are not lovable like those we've met in other Mitchell books. If anything, they compare to the gods in his previous books. Many, including the dragons, believe that dragons are immortal gods, while all humans and 'other' beings are subservient. In their arrogance, the dragons strive for world domination. Never a good thing regardless of the world you find yourself in. I deducted one-half a star because of the violence and cruelty enacted by the dragons and others on their behalf.
The Demon Witch plays a bigger role in this second book, but alas, the Demon Witch is still a secondary figure, a supporting character, if you will. I can only hope that the Demon Witch plays an even bigger role in the next book.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, Death Seer, and am grateful that the wait won't be overly long. I can't get enough.
Having just finished reading the Demon Witch, I’m in awe. I have loved all of the Magelands books, but I think this is the most riveting: nonstop action, tons of surprises, and great character development. It might work as a stand alone, but I think it well worth reading Serpent Dominion first. Serpent Dominion introduces our characters and this new world in the Magelands universe. As with all of the Magelands books, the worlds, magic, and especially the characters are richly described and evolve in response to occurrences in the stories.
Although I have read tons of books, leaning towards series with big books, and lots of them, the Magelands books (about 30!) have captured me more than others I’ve read in many years. For those who are not familiar with the Magelands universe, you’re missing a great series. Personally, I like to read a series in order, but with how exciting Demon Witch is, I’d be tempted to recommend a neophyte start with the Magelands Dominion series and then go back to the beginning. The Magelands universe is portrayed in a series of series…there are multiple storylines that interact. It would make a migraine inducing Zen diagram!
Demon Witch is the second novel in the new Serpent Dominion series by Christopher Mitchell. I was given an ARC of the book and asked for an honest review. This installment was more difficult for me to get into than the first in the series. We have the same characters with some new ones, as well. I still don’t like Reyn or the Colonel and am glad I do not have to read from their perspective. As the book progressed, I enjoyed Leona more and more.
I cannot decide if I should cheer when a dragon loses in some way or not. This is mostly due to the dragons in the other Magelands books and my liking them. I hate how arrogant they are in this series but I kept thinking of the others. But by the end, I have firmly chosen my side. One aspect I noticed was Mitchell is great at showing the cruelty of both sides of a conflict. It got me more involved—how disgusted I was with some characters’ actions.
I’m glad the next comes out soon. The end was a cliffhanger!
I was given an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. I was definitely unsure of where the author was headed at the end of Worlds End. After reading this I am excited and cannot wait for the next installment. It may be a new unknown world but the author’s world building and character arcs are unmatched. There are so many things happening with so many different characters!! There is something for everyone as the author writes yet another masterpiece. Highly Recommend!!
Book 2 in the Magelands Dominion and as usual it doesn't disappoint. Keeps you wanting to finish the book. New individuals in this series begin to stand out even more and start to get into you the way we loved Sable etc in previous Magelands series. A book that I think is a build up to the last in the 3 part series that introduces us to this world. Well written and keeps you wanting more, cant wait for Death Seer(Part 3).
We're quickly dropped into the action from where book one left off. Book 2 moves with a much quicker pace as we now have established characters and it feels like we have action non-stop.
What really stands out in Demon Witch is the unpredictability in the way the story is developing - there are so many angles that Mitchell could have taken and every choice seems to be the right one so far!
A fantastic end to the book which now has us all waiting for Book 3 to see where we go next.
Fantastic continuation of the Magelands Dominion series, the evolution of the Characters is a joy to read, the fast paced action and several plot twists keep you intrigued. Christopher has a fantastic natural ability for Epic Fantasy, the quality of the storytelling is second to none. Demon Witch will keep you riveted from start to finish and begging for more. *This is a review of an advance copy of the book sent by the author.
Yet another book I couldn’t put down, the characters grow and as usual you learn more about them and start to change how you feel about them. Action packed all the way through I loved every minute of it and cannot wait for the next book.
Very exciting addition to the story of this new world. Follow the Demon Witch and who she actually is and the story evolves and becomes more familiar. Well written and great imagination... I love this book and how the characters evolve. Looking forward to next in the series.
Fast paced, many twists. If you like sentient dragons, mages with powers, and plots where the unexpected is the usual then you will find this one captivating!
