Five months after his marriage to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy takes a fall from his horse. Awakening, the last thing he remembers is fleeing Hunsford after being rejected. How will his wife and his friends help him regain that which he has lost?
This is a story about amnesia, but differs from Side by Side, Apart in that it is Darcy who has been injured as he rushes back to Pemberley from London and his horse falls. He has a deep gash on his head. When he awakens he cannot remembers anything after the Hunsford proposal. He and Elizabeth have been married for 5 months. We get hints that she is recovering from something and I am sure you will soon figure that one out. But Darcy does not remember her as his wife and is alarmed when she spends times in his bedroom or alone with him as he fears for her reputation.
The angst with this situation is that the doctor does not want anyone filling in the details of Darcy's missing memories as he states that Darcy will never be sure that they are then his memories or just what he has heard from other as to what his memories should be. Darcy, reticent man that he is, does not reveal how he feels or thoughts, dreams, even flashes of "memory" and he sinks into depression. Elizabeth has learned how to read his feelings mostly just by looking into his eyes or reading his facial expressions. But she can't pull thoughts out of him without telling him that she is his wife so it would be appropriate to talk to her, to reveal to her, even question her about what is going on in his head.
There are other events with their friends and relatives. I was not particularly satisfied when in the second book Caroline's makes a 180 degree turn-about in her observations and then her actions towards others, even servants. That part of the story just seemed to happen without explanation: just all of a sudden Caroline decides to try things the way the Bennet sisters and even her brother have been doing all along. Caroline with insight? It was a stretch for me.
The first book rated more stars from me but when I had to mix in my thoughts on the second book the total was lower. The book did keep my interest.
A two part book where the first half was pure agony and the second half was pure delight.
Part 1 Darcy had an accident on his way back to Pemberley, he had taken a blow to the head that erased the last year and a half. Having no memories since he left Hunsford, he believed his wife was the miss Elizabeth that despiced him. That was not the only grievance Elizabeth experience though and to me at was a bit much... The doctor advicing that they did not inform Darcy of the events that he did not remember, made Elizabeth's life rather heart-wrenching.
Part 2 Darcy had been appraised that Elizabeth was his wife and their relationships development was a joy to follow. Several other major characters also had their happily ever after and some of the twist and turns was both surprising and funny. This part of the book was a 5* worthy read to me.
I particularly adored the rendition of Darcy in this book. He was true to Austen's character, did not transform into an eloquent speaker but it was rather Elizabeth's understanding him better that made their relationship thrive.
I would have liked to have known if Darcy got all his memories back though, the story does not really tell.
This is an enjoyable and imaginative sequel to Pride and Prejudice. Darcy is rushing home to Pemberley and falls from his horse suffering from temporary amnesia. He can't recall his life after the proposal in Kent.
How will Elizabeth & Georgiana cope with the doctor's instructions not to fill Darcy in?
This is a fun and fanciful sequel. With a lot of surprises for many characters.
This a rather older book so it may be the first or close to the first variation where Darcy or Lizzie has amnesia. Not sure that’s important but it is mildly interesting.
The first half of the book, dealing with amnesia was pretty interesting. The second half of the book was like most sequels, stories about our favorite characters.
The Wickham couple was handled in an original way. Lydia’s story ends abruptly and I wish the epilogue had some mention of her life.
All in all a pretty decent story. Glad I read it but I won’t read it again.
This was a great continuation of Pride and Prejudice. Five months after their marriage Darcy falls off his horse in a serious accident and splits his head open. He is nursed by his wife but when he is awakened he thinks he is hallucinating since he sees Ms Elizabeth Bennet in front of him. He has forgotten the past year and a half and lastly remembers Elizabeth after her rejection of her suit. The doctor tells the family that Darcy must come to remember the past on his own and they are not to fill in his memory which frustrates Darcy. Poor Elizabeth to be just a friend of the family. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Darcy's thoughts as he would look at Elizabeth, or observe her with Georgiana and even Fitzwilliam. But I truly loved how he found out the truth! That was one of my favourite scenes. From that point beard, Darcy's memory comes back in stages while we are experiencing some sad news, happy news in the forms of engagements and pregnancies. I loved heading about Georgiana and the love of her life and I even enjoyed seeing Caroline's character develop for the better. Great read!
Very enjoyable story I found this variation to be quite the page turner. It kept me interested from beginning to end. A couple of things kept me from the 5-star review. First, unless I completely missed something, it wasn’t made clear as to whether Darcy ever regained all of his memory or not. The other thing was the incorrect use of the term “count” for Lord Grosner. Otherwise, it was a nice sweet variation.
Truly interesting story from beginning to end. I found the way the author dealt with a concussion in this way. It hit close to home for me. I was flabbergasted how they handled the situation, I was surprised. Highly recommended to read for anyone. Great written and good storyline.
I always like a good amnesia story! This was very enjoyable, I liked proud Darcy trying to figure out what was going on, all while still loving Elizabeth. I found it resolved itself fairly quickly and then fell into more of a standard sequel. I wish the "forgetting" went on a bit longer, it was nicely done!
I enjoyed this one. Although the plot has been done before, it had a twist to it. The dialogue was good between the characters, who were interesting without being overdrawn.
I am truly glad that I decided to read this book, the author did a wonderful job in continuing the original book in the same writing style as Miss Austen. This one goes on with the story of Jane, Lizzy, Miss Darcy and Caroline. We are updated on each of their lives and enjoy enjoy four more weddings. Of course the main subject of this story is the accident that Mr Darcy has and the long recovery. I hate to say more as to not ruin the book to new readers. Between what I have said here and the brief description the readers receive when the find the book any more would spoil the wonderful surprises in store for the reader. You will enjoy the book I am sure as much as I did. This is a must continue book for any readers of Pride & Prejudice!
I enjoyed this P&P variation. Some areas could have been better developed as there were many side stories that we were told of. I think the book would have been a little more engaging if we had seen the plot lines unfold. Still an enjoyable variation.
A few months after his marriage to Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy suffers a concussion which causes him to forget the events following his disastrous proposal at Hunsford. A sweet P&P continuation.
