All Hannah needs is a nice and quiet vacation after her first year of teaching French at a high school. She joins her brother Ben for the summer in their mom’s log cabin in Arizona. There, she meets Josh again, Ben’s childhood friend from the Navajo reservation. The little boy from the rez has grown up fast, and Hannah can’t help but feeling more for him than just friendship.

But fate apparently has something else in store for her. And it’s not peace and quiet. Night after night, Hannah is plagued by strange nightmares about the past of Navajo Nation and terrifying shadows chasing her. They seem to come closer – and why is Josh always present in her dreams?

First, a quick note.

Jen Minkman sent me a review request, asking that I read/review Shadow of Time. After reading the blurb, and a few reviews, I thought it sounded like something I would really enjoy!

Once I started reading, I found I just couldn't get in to it. So I emailed Jen, and asked if she would rather that I post an interview on my blog, than a negative review. This is her (wonderful) response:
I've been thinking a bit today about your opinion on Shadow of Time, and since I asked for your honest opinion and even e-mailed you specifically because you don't shy away from writing critical reviews, I would like to ask you if you could still leave a few lines on Goodreads and explain to readers why it wasn't your cup of tea. After all, it's a bit ridiculous to expect one's book to only receive favourable reviews. Don't get me wrong, I don't want you to completely torch my book on your blog or anything (that would effectively destroy any readership I might gather in Canada once and for all ;) but it's only fair if I allow you to say what you thought of it to followers you might have on Goodreads.
So first, I want to thank Jen for being such an absolute pleasure to work with, and for understanding that not every person can love every book. In a time of such awful author behaviour, it's lovely to see that there are still many authors who appreciate that readers will have different tastes.

As for my few lines as to why Shadow of Time didn't work for me, here's what I said in return:
I guess I wasn't connecting with the characters? I know Hannah is in her early 20s, but as someone who is in their early 20s, she came across quite childish. And I appreciated that Josh was a bit of an enigma, but he was too hot and too cold for my taste. I was also hoping Hannah would buck up and just demand that he give her some answers (which she did, eventually) but it was just taking too long for me.
So, for me, it was mostly that I had a hard time connecting to the characters. I really enjoyed the Native American influence, and the large role their culture played, but I couldn't get past how awkward or nonsensical the characters (or some of their actions) were.

Ever since the very first pages, I felt incredibly hooked by the story. I usually know right from the beggining if I like a book or not, and it seems that I was right this time too.

Hannah is a lovable character right from the start, with her shyness, sense of humour and insecureness. She is very dedicated in everything she does, and will not back out when it comes to the people she loves, even if she is in mortal danger. Throughout the book, I could relate to most of what she was experiencing, but I felt a little bit annoyed when she was crying like a baby because of Josh. However, I also think that this would have been the case for any of us women if we had had to go through a situation like hers. I could tell from very early on that there was something more to Josh than met the eye. And it's such a pity I can't tell you how amazing it was when I discovered exactly what. I would spoil the book for you if I did. His connection to Hannah is very clear, not only to them, but also to the people around them. It literally made me mumble "you idiot!" anytime Josh was afraid of getting involved into a serious relationship with her. I loved him at the beggining, hated him and ended up loving him a lot more when I found out about his motives.

My favourite parts were definitely the ones where the Dinè's way of life was detailed. From the way they think and eat, to the way they act and talk. Jen documented herself very well and it is amazing to what extent she managed to describe everything, especially when you find out that she has never been to America, let alone Navajo Nation! When I got to the half of the book, I felt that everything was happening too slowly, but then there were two chapters about what happened in the past, and everything began to make so much sense, it was actually incredible how everything was connected, how every single detail had a purpose and a meaning behind it.

Honestly, I would have loved to find out more about the past. It was so intriguing to learn about the Navajo history and language, their traditions and the struggles they had been through to survive. At each of these two chapters' ending, I was so touched I felt like crying. Jen managed to make me very interested in the Dinè, and I will definitely read more books about them, especially nonfiction ones, as I want to learn more.

"Shadow of Time" is marked as YA Paranormal, but it is so much more than that! It is one of those books that once finished, you feel you are a better, more mature person. I recommend it to everyone, but I think it will appeal more to girls and women.

I received the book from the author in exchanges of an honest review.

I wasn't fully aware of what genre Shadow of Time was before I started it. Fantasy or chick-lit?
First half of the book is definitely chick-lit and I loved it! I adored Hannah; she's funny, independents og ready for a great summer. No teenage insecurity, but a young woman capable of standing on her own two feet and she doesn't need a man to have fun. Her brother Ben is amazing and almost as fun as his sister. Josh is fantastic and even though I thought a lot about the age difference in the beginning, it's not that noticeable later on.

I like the slow romance that develops between Josh and Hannah. Nice and easy they go from being childhood friends to having their first kiss and then things escalate. They barely kissed before the words ‘I love you’ are uttered and that's just too soon, even if an explanation follows later on.

The most noteworthy part of the book was the writing. It has a nice flow and it's both vivid and riveting - it completely captured me and I'm definitely going to read whatever else Jen Minkman publishes. First half of the book vanished between my fingers in no time and I loved every bit of it; Hannah making friends, Hannah falling in love, Hannah enjoying her summer. It was so relaxing and I kept wishing for a beach and warm weather. Slowly the paranormal part was introduced into the story and it worked very well in the beginning, but at some point it just got to be too much. Too much information came at me at once about the Navajo's and Josh and even though it was thrilling, I had a hard time remembering all of it.

Still, the story of the Navajo's is very interesting and especially Josh's story is heartbreaking and merciless - I enjoy getting to know him so well. Frankly, the story got a bit too paranormal, probably because I kept feeling that the book mostly was a chick-lit and those two genres doesn't cooperate very well for me.

At some point during the story something happens that makes it impossible for Josh and Hannah to be together which makes Hannah extremely depressed. Like really. She changes completely, as if Josh was her only reason to be happy. It doesn't fit the Hannah I loved in the beginning and it just annoyed the hell out of me, pardon my French. Too much teenage drama!

The ending seems a little rushed and it’s a bit too easy. I get the message and symbolic of it, but it happens so fast compared to the enormous build-up.
The first half of the book is a sure 5 star rating, but due to the amount of paranormal stuff (in what I felt was primarily a chick-lit), the easy ending and Hannah's break-down, Shadow of Time unfortunately only gets 3 stars (well, 3,5 stars).

Side note: I wasn't aware that the book was a self-published before I read it and I haven't got the best experience with self-published books. Shadow of Time is, however, the exception - it wasn't filled with spelling mistakes, the story is coherent and it leaves no loose ends. Way to go, Jen Minkman!

I absolutely loved Shadow of Time. It was one of those rare books that leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what else the author can throw at you and loving every minute of it. I was immediately sucked into the story that Jen took such great care to create.

Hannah has got to be another one of my favourite bookish heroines. She's just so likable and I love the inner strength that she radiates even though she's actually really shy and awkward. But the best part about her was that she was really, really funny! I love coming across a character who makes me laugh because so many authors seem to focus on making their heroines smart and strong that they forget that there characters should have a sense of humour. So I'm really glad that Jen wrote Hannah the way she did.

The other good character was Josh, who appears as Hannah's love interest in the story. He was smart, funny and loyal to Hannah but he was also the typical teen boy in that he is completely oblivious to what Hannah is feeling which made him even more authentic and it was wonderful to seem him along with Hannah grow individually and together as the book went on.

The story though completely blew me away. I loved the paranormal aspect of it just as much as I loved the romance of the book. I loved learning all about the Dinès whom you'll get very well acquainted with if you choose to read the book. So in an effort not to ruin the book for any perspective readers I won't really mention them other than to say that they were really interesting and played a big part in the novel.

I loved how the story was paced. There was always a sense of knowing that something major was going to happen through the book and when something major did happen I would be left reeling and having no idea what would happen next.

Overall, I loved the sense of adventure that I felt while I was reading Shadow of Time and I loved feeling so connected to the characters as well as the story. It was wonderful to see a book that deals with Navajo people and their traditions.

I would recommend this to everyone who has a love for young adult paranormal reads. This is an utterly unique tale written by a fantastic new voice in the young adult genre and offers an engaging story in Shadow of Time. This is a book that I'll be recommending for a long time to come and I can't wait to see more written by Jen Minkman.

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my free and honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed herein are 100% my own.

I love it when I come across a book that sounds interesting upon reading the summary but then becomes so much more when you actually read the book. The writing was excellent, story line unique and very well researched. This book incorporated clean romance, Native American spiritualism (specifically Navajo), supernatural/paranormal content, historical references, and included characters that don't fit the normal 'type'- which was quite refreshing to me, however some may be uncomfortable with reading about characters that fall outside the 'norm.' For instance you have age differences, smokers, lesbians and spiritual shamans verses a typical young adult romance that features the 'girl next door' and her 'crush' down the street. What I loved about the characters were how intertwined they became... like an extended family. You can feel the closeness, trust and love between them which made the main characters connection even more real.

Hannah and Josh, the two main love interests in this book, grew up together each summer but haven't seen each other in four years. When they reunite there is an instant attraction which is awkward at first for Hannah since she is about 6 years older than Josh. At the beginning the attraction seems rushed however as the story progresses you find out why they have an instant connection and root for them.

This story stayed with me for days after reading it. I've read a few Native American fiction and I feel that this was very well done. However, not being of Navajo decent I cannot state whether the author's depictions are accurate. But, to me, it was well done (especially when I read the author notes about never stepping foot on Navajo soil!).

If you enjoy supernatural, paranormal, and not-your-typical romance then you will enjoy this book. Recommend for Young Adult and older.

Shadow of Time has quickly become one of my all time favorite paranormal books. It hooked me from the very beginning, and had me fully engaged and captivated until the very end, which isn't common for me. In a nutshell, it's the story of a young woman who goes on a summer vacation to a log cabin in Arizona with her brother. There she meets up with Josh (her brother's childhood friend) who quickly develops into her love interest. The story is fueled by this burning desire along with her recurring nightmares involving Navajo history, terrifying shadows.. and Josh. As you begin to learn about the secrets behind her nightmares, you will become even more intrigued and feel yourself rooting for these characters. The entire book takes you on an intense ride of emotions, leaving you with a satisfying ending, and lessons learned that you will not soon forget. This book remains one that I would recommend to anyone looking for a captivating read of romance, horror, and even history. Great book!

When I turned eighteen, I dated a twenty-five-year-old. To be honest, nobody said anything about the age gap, but to me, it didn't feel right. There were too many differences. He wanted someone who could move in with him and cook; I wanted to go to school and party. So when I read that Hannah was twenty-three, and Josh 17. I thought "no way will this work out!"

But then, Jen Minkman's magic began to work on me. Her writing is energetic and flows without awkwardness. The relationship she build for Hannah and Josh feels real right from the start. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Shadow Of Time by Jen Minkman

FANTASTIC!!!

PARANORMAL AT IT'S BEST!

To be honest, this is my second novel to the world of paranormal.
I’ve read several novels before laying my eyes on this one, But this was the second paranormal novel I’ve ever come across. And I must say, I am NOT Disappointed. I can’t believe I left this genre obsolete till now.
What a fantastic read this novel was.
I’m deeply impressed with Jen Minkman’s story and stomped on the decision to write this review with a wide grin on my face.

How did I come across this novel?

Well, I’ve been reading many Self-Help, Fiction, Non Fiction, Fantasy, Dystopian, Thriller type novels. To try something new, I once in a blue moon decided to try out the infamous paranormal genre.
Surfing through the web, Something caught my glimpse.
“SHADOW OF TIME”
I click Next page.
Wait a second…
I click Back.
What was it?
“SHADOW OF TIME”

I glance upon the synopsis which proudly reads,

“”All Hannah needs is a nice and quiet vacation after her first year of teaching French at a high school.

Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up with you.””

Holy Angel!!!
Reading the synopsis, Something resonates with me.
I clearly remember the dreams, haunting upon ME fiercely over recent weeks, about the burning farms, people running for their lives. For once, I predicted these were just mere dreams until it repeated for the second, then third and fourth and finally fifth time in the same month. How could it be dream?
“HALLUCINATION”.

That’s what made me stop dead in my tracks when I read the synopsis…
A girl Hanna, Similar to my age, facing such dreams.
Oh man! I got to read this novel to find out if there are other people in the world who face the dreams that I’ve been haunted by…

This book is 400 pages and make no mistake it requires long time to swipe through the pages but I soon almost forgot my reading progress as soon as the novel started and the journey began. I checked on the dates and duration and it was a week complete that I lived in the paranormal world Jen Minkman created exceptionally well.

The story started on well, very fast paced, but the first 100~150 pages appeared to me just as some other ordinary love story. Reading first 150 pages, I didn’t expect I’ll love and enjoy this novel as much as I did after reading from cover to cover.
Then comes page 180…..200…..240….280…. And story really starts getting it’s interest and pace just like watching a new born learning to walk…
It starts of from crawling……walking…..running……bicycle……motorcycle…..4 wheels and finally Jet….

It’s certainly a very gripping story and will surely hook up a captivated audience for few days to live the paranormal world which appears very believable.

Characters:- Well, all the characters were equally given the importance and I didn’t find it difficult to remember the names of any.
Josh was my favorite character as I could relate to him personally.
I loved how Agile Josh was to thrive upon eliminating the curse.
Ben was equally supporting and caring too.
And the main character Hanna was written to appear as resilient and rebounding.

Story:-
It’s a very gripping story that will hold the readers glued to their seats.
Smooth twists to avoid any abrupt changes, which felt very profound.
Characters were delegate, and the suspense between defeat , death and triumphs at the very end were just captivating and exhilarating.
I read the book from cover to cover with few short siesta but I didn’t have to fight against contemplation getting the story to resonate with me. Nor I faced any problems with keeping the track of storyline through the week.
The story might not be as bizarre to the paranormal fans, but it’s certainly a refreshment over your regular twilight and vampire stuffs.
(Not many paranormal books have coyote in it, do they?)
Skin-walkers, Shape Shifters, Fierce Shadows, Beautiful characters yielded the book to be a fast pace and smooth read and exhilarating experience.

The book talks much about Navajo Culture and Dine Language, about which I didn’t have any prior knowledge.
Author has well researched about the Navajo Culture and the language which reflects and shines through out the novel.
At-least Now I possess handful of knowledge about Native Americans and Navajo Culture. All thanks to author for her deep research (and also thanks to myself, for picking up this novel, hehehehe)…

Though I felt the book could be much shorter, around 250 pages or perhaps 280 ish range if the first part was re-written a bit shorter.
But Anyways, It’s the first novel by author and since English is not the native language of Jen, I’ll admit she managed to strike me with her creativity and beautiful story.
Though I have few inquisitive questions in mind, but I see, that’s a personal issue.

Overall, the story was as Serene and soothe, It kept me hooked and gripped effortlessly for a week.
So Go ahead, grab your kindle and download a copy.

5/5 Stars.
Thumbs Up!

My rating: 3/5 stars
Remember to stop by my blog!

May contain some spoilers
Our main character is Hannah, who is on her way to Arizona, where she's suppose to meet her brother, Ben. Before she gets there, she runs into a hot stranger while fueling up. She's blushing like an idiot, but manages to somewhat get over it, until she realizes The Hottie is Josh, his brother's best friend. He's the guy who used to call her "big sister". And he still is only 17!
Hannah tries her best to get over his hotness, but doesn't really manage that so well. Especially when she sometimes feels like he might feel the same way about her.
And that isn't her only problem; she's started seeing some weird dreams, where Josh is with her. And after first running into three drunken guys, he keeps seeing groups of three men everywhere. Sometimes not even men, but coyotes. You'd be freaking out, too!

Main thing left in my mind about the book was a huge admiration towards the author. Because times and times again I was just astonished her knowledge of Native American culture! She's really done her homework and a whole lot of more on top of that! She knew everything about customs and culture and language and it just kept surprising me over and over again. That's definitely a positive thing. But it also made me wish I was more into Native American culture. Or to any other culture. In school, any class about different cultures or even about history and I was fast asleep. Like in ten seconds! I have no idea how that's even possible, but it's a true story, I swear.
So, there was a whole lot of information in this book. Yet I didn't fall asleep, but I did get distracted occasionally. There was just so much details about a subject I'm not that interested about, so I had to take a lot of breaks. But still, I always came back!

The story was pretty slow paced, probably because of the huge amount of details. That also kept distracting me, and I had to really focus and remind myself that this is a love story and the main focus should be on Hannah and Josh.
In the end, they are a great couple, but Josh was definitely my favorite! Hannah was suppose to be an adult, yet she acts like she's fifteen with all the blushing etc. And the age difference bothered me. And I kept reminding myself that my husband is six years older than me, but then I remember I was 20 when we started going out. Everything was legal. Yes yes, I'm definitely old.

In the end, I didn't really get along with the characters, but still, the main thing on my mind about this book is how talented and passionate the author is. I'm not a fan of Native American culture, and probably never will be, but I hope someone who is will read this. Because this will probably become his/her favorite book, thanks to amazing details and a great love story!

My thanks to the author for providing a copy for review!

This wasn't a bad read at all. It was very quick. My only complaint was that the main character was 23 but she never came across being that old. She wasn't a terrible person it just seemed like she was a lot younger. This is one of those books that leaves you hanging at the end so I will interested in reading the next book.

MY REVIEW
I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
The cover makes a lot of sense when you read the book as it is a scene from within the book. I tend to favour covers that are a scene from the book as you know your minds eye is on the same wavelength of the Authors imagery. The cover depicts Hannah and Josh, or maybe even Josh and his wife in a former life in a Navajo cave.
The book is well written and descriptive in such a good way you can see the places Jan is describing.
I love all the characters, Hannah, Josh and Ben. I really loved how the former lives were brought into the story and we eventually find out about Hannah and Ben too. I admit i had guessed who Hannah was etc but the twist with who Ben is/was is really great and though you are given hints they are very subtle. I wasn't so keen on Emily as I felt a slight undercurrent that perhaps she was somewhat jealous of Hannah and Josh's relationship.
Maybe it was just me that read Emily that way.
Some of my review probably sounds a little confusing but, it will, I promise make sense when you read the book, and you really should.
The only part of the book I wasn't as enamored with was near the end, the rituals and descriptions of past lives seemed a little off, in that I was so interested in them, but didn't get the detail where I wanted it. The scenery was a little overly described and I would have preferred a bit more emotional description. I really loved the fact the author went into history of Josh's people and to be honest would have loved and definitely read a book just on that and Josh's tribes traditions etc. Perhaps others would find the detail long winded, but it was telling us about a complicated time in history. I would have loved a little more, delivered in the way most of the book was written, as though Josh is telling us the traditions/rituals. I don't quite know how to put it into words, I really enjoyed the book but, I feel it could have been even better. I hope that makes sense. I would have loved to have seen "The Long Walk" through Josh's eyes.
I felt the book ended quite well, though I though perhaps Josh and Hannah would have taken more time and had more discussions over planning when they were next to meet up. All the jigsaw pieces as such had been put together, so will there be a book 2? I am not sure, as the "bad guys" were dispensed with at the end of this book.
Did I enjoy the book? Yes, I did. Would I recommend the book? Yes especially if you love Native American history too. Though you don't require any previous knowledge of the era is not needed to enjoy the book. Would I read a Bk#2? I think I would, yes. Would I read more by Jen Minkman? Yes!

A magical Native American story packed with supernatural ambience and heartwarming poignancy.

An exquisite paranormal romance wherein the central focus is actually about friendship and loyalty rather than just irrevocable, impassioned love. The customs and unique culture is well-researched and beautifully detailed adding to the story’s authentic feel. The writing is compelling, touching and deeply beguiling professing the author’s uniquely identifiable style and accomplished ability with putting thoughts into words. What caught my attention/ fascination was the unmistakable love triangle between Hannah, Josh and Ben that I felt was slightly reminiscent of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight saga (Edward, Bella and Jacob) for it really tugged at the heartstrings and drew me into the story.

‘Shadow of Time’ begins with Hannah after her year of teaching French at a high school and when she joins her brother Ben for the summer in their mom’s log cabin in Arizona. There she encounters Ben’s childhood friend, Josh, who has grown up into quite a young man. She soon is torn between friendship and a more intense connection with Josh, with feelings seeping out from her inner core. Whether it is either providence or fate she is tormented by restlessness and demons from the dark, awaking in her soul and coming alive at night. She is plagued by nightmares about the past of Navajo Nation and about terrifying shadows which are hunting her. Josh is also forever present both within her dreams and every single waking hour ~ it is all so mysterious as secrets start to unravel.

I found this intriguing tale so very interesting to read, and I absolutely loved how Jen Minkman combined myth and legend, with a sprinkling of magic and historical depth. The history of the people makes the magic and mystical elements of this story even more ‘real’ and it also adds emphasis to the main character’s chosen path and journey along it. I felt an intimate connection with this book as I not only could empathize and relate to various events and characters, but look upon Hannah’s life’s path and compare it to our own lives…which are as ever changeable as the daily weather.

Ultimately satisfying, profoundly meaningful and fulfilling this sensational read is something that I would highly recommend to all who love thrilling suspense and dazzling mystery. When we examine our current situation and explore various paths ahead for our future, we must also turn to the past for answers and sometimes even guidance ~ even if it is so that we can move forwards. This is a wonderful spellbinding read of intense multi-layered significance and great magnitude.

Shadow of Time by Jen Minkman

First I have to say this book was amazing, and I found the authors writing and the research it must have taken to write this story was truly fantastic. Shadow of Time is well written, the characters and story line were captivating, and I couldn’t put this book down. I have to say Jen Minkman has written a very original story and I found myself truly caught up in this novel.

We first meet Hannah who travels to their summer home to hang out with her brother during the summer holidays. Hannah who teaches French is looking forward spending time with her brother and relaxing. When she bumps into her brothers best friend Josh she is shocked to see it is the same man she was checking out at the gas station earlier. He has grown into a tall dark gorgeous young man.

Josh and Hannah can feel the attraction and the pull towards each other, Hannah does struggle a bit as Josh is 17 years old compared to her 23. But she cannot control the attraction she is feeling and knows Josh is feeling the same.

Things are going well for Hannah, but at night Hannah is having some strange dreams that involve the Navajo people and Josh. Her dreams are starting to frighten her, not sure what to do with the images she sees in her dreams she starts to wonder if they could be real?

Shadow of Time is a paranormal romance novel but so unique and original that you can’t help but get caught up in this story. Hannah is a great character and she seems very real I really enjoyed how she handled things and the way the author kept her character more true to life then some of the other female characters in books.

I loved all the history of the Navajo people and its culture to be truthful I was so caught up in learning about this that sometime it was a bit more interesting then Hannah and Josh, but I do love romance.
Josh was a harder character to understand at first he was so on and off with Hannah I wasn’t sure what was going on, but the story had me so captivated I couldn’t wait to see this relationship grow.

I have rated Shadow of Time a 4.5 star rating, and Jen Minkman is one fantastic author, I would recommend Shadow of Time to anyone who is reading my review to go get yourself a copy of Shadow of Time. I would definitely read anything Jen Minkman writes in the future.

I have to say, this was not what I expected when I picked up the book, and even my first impression did not quite prepare me for the book.

Hannah is back at her parents' log cabin for her summer break from teaching, and her and her brother Ben have the place all to themselves. But her time off is anything but relaxing. Seeing her brother's childhood friend, Josh, all grown up puts her in a tizzy. He's handsome, sensitive, and has earned a special place among his Navajo people, but he's burdened and distant at times, which throws her off. On top of it, she's having nightmares that feel real about an ancient time, in which she's an integral player, and she's being harassed by different people. It's a summer full of so much promise -- if she can get past all the hurtles in her way.

So, for my expectations. I frequently get books but can't read them right away, so when I looked at the cover (which I did both when I purchased the book and before I read it), I was surprised by the Native American theme in a very fantasy type cover. But it's pretty, so in that respect I suppose it's working.

I started reading, and the writing was decent, but it smacked of a first book, which made me nervous. I almost gave up at that point, but I decided to give it a little more time. The Navajo setting had me hooked, and I'm so glad.

The romance is very hot and cold. Hannah doesn't quite seem like a 21 year old, so her falling for a "more mature" 17 year old doesn't seem too far off base. Hannah definitely looses sight of the age difference as the book progresses, but we get gentle reminders from the author, which was a nice touch. (I think at one point it said the age difference is 6 years, but it's only 4 years, and from the sounds of it, not quite that.) The author did a great job with pulling the emotional strings with the romance.

I was a bit bummed about the ending though. It ends on a pretty dramatic note - not necessarily a cliff-hanger, but definitely not a comfortable close. So I suppose I'll have to put the next book on my reading list to get my resolution, but overall, not a bad book.

I can't vouch for the Native American bits, since I'm admittedly ignorant, but they felt authentic. There was a lot of nice detailing, and quite a few Native American words and such. I hope to add more Native American stories to my library, so this was a fun start.

Shadows of Time was a very interesting book. There were all kinds of different elements and genres thrown into one. First you have a sort of historical element going where we learn about the Native American people who live (lived)in the area, along with words and customs. Then we have a romance in there which, if left alone would maybe be a historical romance. But no. We have reincarnation, time travel of sorts and suspense thrown in as well. Crazy.

For the most part, I enjoyed the story. It was, like I said before, interesting. I can say I haven't read a book quite like it before. I felt like the characters were real and I could relate to them or visualize them in my head. There was some good tension in the beginning between Hannah and Josh that had me impatient for that first kiss, that connection.

There were some places in the book that the sentence structure or words felt a bit odd. After a few times I thought that the author may have a first language other than our American English. So, I went and read about the author and sure enough, she does. That comes through in the book. It's not the biggest deal, but it did distract me at times from the story.

It was kinda weird, the whole age difference thing between Hannah and Josh. I get that it shouldn't seem so weird because of the reincarnation aspect but I have a 17 year old son. If some mid-twenties woman was romantically interesting in him, it would be weird. Creepy. I kept picturing Josh as a seventeen year old and it was creeping me out.

I did enjoy the relationship between Hannah and her brother, Ben. Good that.

So overall, an interesting book with many likable elements and concepts. I would recommend a mature audience for this book due to content listed below and above.

Content: Swearing, sex behind closed doors, same sex relationship, sexual innuendo

Reading a book by someone you know is always perilous - what if you don't like it? But from the first couple of pages from this book, I already knew I had nothing to worry about.

Jen has a beautiful writing style that is both captivating and deeply professional. Her mastery of the English language is amazing, especially considering it's not her native tongue. (I can only dream of having a vocabulary like hers, and will from now on be consulting her when I do anything in English, ever.) The relationships between her main characters I found to be very convincing and real, especially the one between Hannah and Ben, which echoed my relationship with my own brother.

Aside from her writing style, her research into the Navajo culture (forgive me: the Diné culture) and the natural way she weaves it into her story are very impressive. Like she herself says in the afterword, I'm sure she got some things wrong, but nevertheless, she manages to paint a very convincing picture. Even if I don't share the belief system the book describes, and was at times mortified by the way Christianity is explained and depicted (though, sadly, people have done considerable damage in the name of Christ), the story in itself was very compelling.

The next book I will be reading of Jen's will probably be in Dutch, simply because I am curious to know if she manages to convince me just as well in my own language. But I imagine that won't be a problem for her. Kudos, Jen.

I listened to the audio version of Shadow of Time, which is an excellent story about maintaining close friendships and love throughout the ages. It includes Navajo folklore, romance, humor, reincarnation, spiritualism, and history. It’s hard to classify this one, but it’s all bundled together to great effect. The supernatural aspects of the story really drew me in, including animal spirit guides, a wise medicine man, and skin walkers.

The story begins when high school French teacher Hannah goes on summer vacation at her mother’s log cabin in Arizona, where her brother Ben still resides. It’s been four years since she visited last and she runs into Ben's childhood friend Josh from the Navajo reservation. They are instantly attracted to one another as if they’ve known each other their entire lives, both present and past lives. Hannah, Ben and Josh are all well developed and extremely likable. The dialogue between them and other characters in the story is seamless and believable.

Coco Bell did an excellent job narrating. Her performance reflected the proper inflections and tones necessary to distinguish the differences between male and female characters, as well as the older and younger characters in the story. I’d listen to another audio book written by Jen Minkman, as well as one narrated by Coco Bell any time. I highly recommend Shadow of Time!

I have to be honest and say that I didn't warm up to the story or the characters instantly, but it didn't take too long for me to become engrossed in the mystery and romance, and by the end the love story gave me a lot of fuzzy feelings.
My favorite part of the novel is the Navajo lore. The setting, the language and the rituals added a new dimension to the novel. Jen Minkman merges the paranormal with a romance that transcends time, and throws in a mystery that kept me guessing until the end. It's not something you see a lot of in YA/NA and I appreciated the change.
The pacing was nice, although I was getting impatient to find out what exactly is causing Hannah's nightmares (and why Josh features so prominently in her dreams), but the waiting was worth it. We get to know the characters well, and I loved how everyone was so normal. Not boring normal, but well rounded and down-to-earth.

If you're looking for something different, you might want to try Shadow of Time. It pays a lot of attention to the history of Navajo and their beliefs and ritual, but without info-dumping or stretching things.

I was given the book in exchange for my honest opinion and review. The book is descriptive and rich in the Native American history. I loved Hannah and being able to see into her mind. I went through stages with Josh, sometimes I wanted to smack him and say, "What are you doing?" and other times he would redeem himself seeing what an idiot he was being with Hannah. When Hannah and Josh were together I would forget he was 17 and not older, Hannah seemed to have the same problem too. It did feel like it took a long time to get to the explanation of why they were in the situation they were in and who they all were to eachother. I had an inkling with Hannah, but it was interesting when Ben was revealed, I didn't see that coming. The part I could give or take was the visit to the past lives. It does explain Native American history and what they went through in Josh's eyes, perfect for those who love to read history. This was a neat reincarnation story immersed in Native American culture. The message in the end was fitting and a learning experience.

With Shadow of Time Jen Minkman has written an amazing and original love story. Shadow of Time is a very good read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I have not yet read any books that revolve around the Native Amarican culture and Jen Minkman knows how to explain the culture and mix it great into the story without just smacking some information on the pages. She paid lots of attention to the rituals and traditions.

'It's all in the details' and you know what that is so true for this story. The writing is very detailed but Jen Minkman does not overdo it, she knows what to unveil at the right time.
From the first page you are drawn into the story and the writing will have you hooked.

I was very happy while reading Shadow of Time and just as much about the story as about the writing.
