Eve Arnold 1912-2012, was a photojournalist working for the prestigious Magnum Agency. The photographs in this book were taken for her personal pleasure, not for assignments....and cover myriad situations of people working all over the world.
I was interested in this one, showing women working on a construction crew in Tibet. It looks like seriously hard labour. In our country - men's work.
A nun forgoes her habit to repair farm machinery belonging to her order.
A lacrosse player at a girls' private school in England.
Whilst all the above photographs interest or charm me, I don't generally like photography books with umbrella titles covering important activities like work. Each photograph tells only a fraction of the story, and it seems to me that if we are to respect the people being photographed we need to know more about their lives and situation. I would have preferred a more localised photo essay - preferably with writing as well, so that I actually learned more about the individual people and their occupations.
