As anyone who has ever studied composition can tell you, writing a short story is no easy trick. The author has to get the attention of the reader in a few sentences or lose the reader completely. The writing must be efficient -- there is no time for wasted words. Wendy Rush is up to the task in both regards, and the reader -- at least this one -- is rewarded with clever, thought provoking, often mysterious, sometimes sweet -- entertainment.
Ms. Rush is not a fully polished writer, and because this book is self-published, it lacks the benefit of a publisher's editorial staff who certainly could have smoothed out a few rough spots and made the stories more "professional." Her stories are so creative, though, that I think anyone who reads them could be forgiving of these little imperfections. Each of the four stories in this collection has its own charm, and like Rod Serling's stories, which it seems Ms. Rush grew up on, there is that little twist at the end.
I have recommended The Shadow Collection to several of my friends, some of which are published, accomplished novelists. I did so because I believe that they will find value in this book and enjoy the stories. I believe you will, too.
