All the information you never thought you needed...and then some can be found in this book. From notes on each story, Q&A's with Lara and the characters to a brand new story called A Touch of Midnight about Gideon and Savannah. It's all in here!
I have to be honest and say the only reason I read this was to read Gideon and Savannah's story. They've been there from the beginning but we've never gotten to know what happened with them. I was really happy I read it! I never really "got" either one of them and it was nice learning about how/why they met...and especially why Gideon doesn't fight and why he wears glasses. And for a short story, LA didn't disappoint with the sexy scenes...she packed quite a punch! The only problem is, of course, that it's too short. I could see this definitely being a full length novel.
The surprising part was that I really enjoyed all the Q&A's. There was a lot of information from Lara but I loved the questions asked of the characters...that was genius!
I also read through the notes on each book and it was interesting. Unfortunately, I didn't read all the trivia stuff. I'll leave that to the Midnight Breed buffs.
A Touch of Midnight is sold separately for just a bit cheaper. I think the one dollar extra is worth it to get all the extra information...especially if you're a Midnight Breed fan.
Favorite quotes:
♥ “It’s how much I need to feel your arms around me like this. You make me feel safe, Gideon. In a way I never knew before. You make me feel as though nothing bad can touch me so long as I’m with you.”
♥ “Spoken like one of Arthur’s noble knights. I’ve never had my own hero.”
♥ “I know you feel it,” he said, his grasp warm on her hand. “I know you can feel my love inside you now, in your blood. Tell me you love me too, Savannah. Tell me you’ll let me prove it to you. Be my mate. Come back with me to Boston. Let me try to be the hero you deserve.”
All the things you wanted to learn about Breeds and you were afraid to ask.
The book includes: -The midnight series breed story world -Glossary of terms -Analysis of each novel (Books 1 up to 10) -An extra novella about Gideon and Savannah (you can also find it without the extra information) -Questions by the readers for Lara Adrian, but also fun questions for the characters -Games and trivia for the hardcore fans
The Companion is very useful for the first 10 books of the series. For the next books and the new generation of Breeds a new guide is needed.
I thought the reason for which Lara Adrian has chosen aliens as the creators of Breeds instead of vampires is quite funny. Basically Lara Adrian does not like corpses and she prefers her book boyfriends to be breathing. So the Breeds who are a kind of vampires would have to breath and have breathing ancestors.
3.5 stars. There is a lot of information in this companion book to Lara Adrian's long running Midnight Breed series. A lot of it is pretty entertaining and useful. There are summaries of the world and its rituals, a summary of each of the books with Lara Adrian's comments, a glossary of terms, a character reference guide (very handy, especially if you want physical characteristics of characters, or what a specific Breed or Breedmate's "gift" is), a reader Q & A section, a kind of cute character Q & A session, and a whole bunch of trivia questions, among other things. However, the focal point is the long awaited Gideon and Savannah prequel novella which takes place 30 years before the events of book 1, Kiss of Midnight.
I generally enjoyed the Gideon and Savannah novella. This was self-published by Lara Adrian and you can tell as there are a number of minor copy editing mistakes and one flat out continuity error (bus or train?) but those aren't too distracting. Gideon has always been a favorite character of mine and I enjoyed seeing how he met Savannah, the reasons why he no longer goes out on missions with the Order, and why he wears glasses (since being Breed, you wouldn't think he would need them). The overall story was a pretty good one and I liked Savannah a lot, as she is a young, intelligent, college freshmen when she gets pulled into the Breed world when her roommate disappears. The 1970's references are kind of fun though the "hacking" references seemed out of place and wrong.
Lara Adrian does fall back on her typical plot device of the Breed Hero I also didn't think that the technologically brilliant, geeky Gideon that we all know, fit very well with the centuries old warrior history Lara Adrian gave him. The ending was also tied up much too rapidly and ended a bit abruptly. It was still pretty fun and an improvement over the dreadful Danika novella of a year or so ago.
The rest of the companion guide is fluffy fun, though I'm not such a huge fan that I could read through every single one of the many trivia questions at the end. From Lara Adrian's comments, there will be another 7 books and a couple of novellas before she ends the series. The next book is Nathan's and will be out in February 2014. Regarding past books, the most interesting information was that Jenna is not turning into one of the Breed. She is a human with supernatural powers and more will be revealed down the road, along with the reason that the Ancient asked her to choose (life or death).
The other (kind of) shocker was that Lara Adrian was embarrassed a few years ago by a fan at a Q & A in Germany who asked about the origins of the Breedmates and why they were special and how that happened. She'd never thought about it and didn't have an answer. So, she went and came up with the Atlantean ancestry of the Breedmates and wrote that into the series. I'd always thought that the Atlantis connection was kind of cheesy and it seemed kind of forced and tacked on, and that's 'cause it was.
So, buy it if you are a big Midnight Breed fan and want to read about Gideon and Savannah and have simply got to know what each and every Breed warrior's eye and hair color is. Otherwise, you probably can skip it.
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to pick this book up! I assumed it was just a who’s who in the series...and I was surprised to find it was so much more! It’s fun, witty, and full of details. More so it’s obviously a labor of love Adrian put together for fans. If you’ve not read the series there’s a lot of spoilers; then again if you like that sort of thing, this would be a fun way to dive in:)
This is a must-have for any fan of the Breed series!
This was a great read. Very interesting and detailed. Definitely a great reference to have if you ever forget a detail about something, whether about a minor detail about a character or a major detail about plot.
But it was Savannah and Gideon's long awaited story that made me want to read this straight away. We've read glimpses about this couple's past but they really deserved to have their story told in full and I'm so glad Lara Adrian decided to write a novella. Their story was beautiful and made me enjoy these two wonderful characters who have been mated for so long even more.
Viel Spass allen dabei!
A useful reminder that helped me resume the series.
All in all I found this companion book more interesting than I thought it would be. I really liked the tone, the author not only shared facts about the series and each books but also some personal stuff without being too privy. I also liked the Q & A part(s), a bit less the trivia because it was a bit long but I did a good score (I reached the Breedmate status, lol). Concerning Gideon and Savannah's novella, I read it in 2013 (see review) and I didn't want to reread it because it left me unsastified at the time. However those two still remain my favourite couple in the series.
Loved catching up with the Breeds and learning some facts about the characters and their stories. I had wanted to read Gideon & Savannah's story for a long time and was so pleased to see that Ms Adrian had finally let us know how they met.....
If you love the Breeds then this is a brilliant addition to the series!
The Midnight Breed Series Companion contains many fun elements that will definitely appeal to fans of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series.
Firstly it contains character information. I always like reading this sort of thing especially when it is about paranormal beings who are part of a ten plus book series. Not that I can’t keep everyone straight but you, of course, see more of some character than others so getting a recap on everyone of importance in the series is a perk. I also liked being reminded of their markings and talents. Can’t tell you why really but I enjoyed reading about that…
Secondly, this tome contains passages where Lara tells us about where her idea for vampires came from. I found this to be very interesting. I mean, her vampires are human(ish)/alien hybrids! You just know there is an interesting story there!
Thirdly, and probably most important to fans of the series, this book contains Gideon and Savannah’s story! Woooooot!!! For those of you who have no idea who I am talking about, let me quickly explain. The Midnight Breed series is a paranormal romance series, meaning by the end of each installment, you will have witnessed a new hero and heroine hooking up and falling madly in love for happily ever after. Back in book one we meet an already mated couple: Gideon and Savannah. Gideon is the sexy geek of the bunch and Savannah is almost like a mother hen. You can’t help but adore these two yet in eleven books, we still have no clue how these two met! Until now.
A Touch of Midnight is the short story that tells their story. I had no idea Savannah was so young when she met Gideon! Maybe that was mentioned in a previous book but if it was I had forgotten. I always love it when a male warrior-type character loses his head over a female in a paranormal book. I find it oddly charming and fun to witness. Gideon’s reaction to Savannah is that sort of reaction but on the low key end, and it worked for him. You also feel their chemistry instantly. I did shake my head at how quickly they fell in love but this is a pnr and that happens more often than not. Plus that didn’t bother me as much as it sometimes does and I think it’s because we have seen this couple years later and we know that their match was a true one.
Savannah is sweet and wonderful even when she was a young adult and I found it awesome how Lara showed us the beginnings of Gideon’s obsession with gadgets and computers. There are so many little things in this story that made me smile either from knowing that it’s an introduction to something we’ll see more of in future telling or from finally finding out where Gideon comes from. His past is very interesting and not like I expected. I really did enjoy reading this story and feel I can go into the next installment to the series with a new appreciation for Gideon and Savannah.
There are also some really fun reader to character Q&As and also reader questions to Lara in the book. Overall, as a fan of the series, I found The Midnight Breed Series Companion to be a fun book to read. If you have not picked up any of the Midnight Breed books yes, you will not enjoy this. This really is made for fans of the series. It is a good series though and worth checking out.
The first time through the Midnight Breed Series, I’ll be honest, Gideon was just a fill-in character for me. Then on my re-read, I just couldn’t get enough of him. Savannah was a side character that I just didn’t notice at first, but on my re-read, I adored her! All I could think was their story that was never to be. Why? Because Ms. Adrian had moved on to the next generation…then she did it…she made me so happy! Even though their story is a novella, it is enough for me…for now.
Savannah is a young woman in a Boston college, eager to learn, working after hours with her roommate for unneeded extra credit. They were cataloging antiques when Savannah found a beautiful sword that she hadn’t noticed before. Through her Breedmate gift, she was able to discern some facts about the sword that a normal person wouldn’t and it scared her. Karen, her roomie, took the artifact to their professor on her way to her date with him; the end result was death for Karen, the professor was critically injured and the sword was gone! Gideon, seeing the attack on TV, recognizes the description of a sword he once had, and sets off to find out what he can about the situation. He finds much more than he set out to; while he wanted to find the Breed who was responsible for killing his two young brothers, he found love.
"The Midnight Breed Series Companion" by Lara Adrian.
I really enjoyed this companion book to the Midnight Breed Series. Specially the novella "Touch of Midnight" featuring Gideon and Savannah. The novella is a prequil about how Gideon and Savannah meet and explains why Gideon doesn't fight anymore and says behind the scenes doing tech work. I just loved it!
It was also very interesting to read about how each book came to be. A little synopsis from Lara explaining each book. There also is a character profile section that has every character that has appeared in the book and what they did (ie: significance to the story). And I really enjoyed the "Fan Questions" at the end. So many questions! The little Trivia Games about "how well do you know the Breed" were really fun too!
If you are a Breed fan, you should definitely get this book.
This was a good companion book for someone who hasn't been reading the series for a few years. It's almost like a refresher course for the series.
What I particularly liked was the insight into Ms Adrian's world-building process and what an author has to go through to ensure consistency and cohesiveness of her own world. It's obviously not as easy as just sitting down and writing a book. More kudos to her for sticking to her guns to self-publish this companion book.
Another great read, even though I bought the paperback through the virtual signing I still had to order the ebook. I'm so happy I did, no way could I have waited for my favorite couple and Lara did not disappoint. I like how they came together and Gideon's talent is hella awesome, even if he never hits the field again maybe one day he'll get it back.
This series ,each book / breed has action danger and a wonderful hea. I love that the author let's us know how each breed and mate in the book be4 is doing. They are just as involved as the all the breeds. Wonderful series
It is a good companion, especially if you need to look up characters. Helps alleviate the confusion of many characters and a big world, same size storyline.
