Within the Mist

Rate this book
Our story centres on the strange folk that inhabit the unusual fishing village of Doon.

Fisherman Archie braves the wild seas to make a living whilst his wife, Stella, plays around with her ‘little’ fancy man. Doris is the proprietor of the seafront store where all but gossip is rationed. Police Constable Doyle is fully occupied tracking down the fiendish and mysterious criminal behind the strange explosions and Molly, the barmaid at The Ship, enjoys a number of ‘close encounters’. The once close twins Carl and Bernard, lead odd and lonely lives in their shack on the beach, lives that will eventually be the death of one of them.

Throughout the twists and turns of village life the story follows the adventures of Dilly, our heroine, and daughter of Seth, a rather obsessive lighthouse keeper. One day, whilst walking on the beach in the early morning mist, she catches sight of a young man, a stranger. Over time their relationship flourishes and the young man, Axel, reveals the true reason for his presence in this God forsaken place that is Doon.

This is the first novella in the Doon trilogy, and is an evocative portrayal of rural wartime life on the south coast. Despite the distant war, life seems predictable and calm but a lot is happening under the surface.
We meet an array of fascinating characters, each with his or her own foibles, triumphs and tragedies, with the gentle Dilly, daughter of lighthouse keeper Seth, as the unifying strand throughout the story. There is sadness, brutality, romance and tenderness, not forgetting plenty of touches of humour to be encountered as you read.
Author Colin Beazley has cast a sympathetic eye over his fictional village. His style is understated and calm, but there is great strength in his writing.
The book has been very professionally produced in terms of presentation, editing and illustrations.

I think 3.5 is more accurate as I loved the ending! Description of many village characters (this is the first of a series,so I suspect some scene setting) and the stranger who comes amongst them. The author appeared to have a knowledge not only of the natural world but of that of the world outside the cosy Devon village.
