*Note: this is a NA romantic suspense novel for 17+.
Jules Hendricks has had a string of bad "firsts."
Embarrassing first kiss. Traumatic first date. An obsessive first boyfriend she can't understand.
It's taken her years but she's finally able to leave her small town life behind for a new start as a freshmen at UW- Madison. For Jules this chance to be independent and rebuild her life is an opportunity she won't ever let anyone take from her again. She's determined to make something of herself without a man by her side, in front, behind or anywhere near her.
Reid "Pax" Paxton is the star quarterback for the UW Badgers. His brush with death makes him understand how precious life is, and how important it is to take life by the horns, unafraid. Jules knows he's dangerous for her. Dark hair. Smoldering eyes. Killer smile. That dimple. That body. Those arms. Pax is everything she's trying to run away from, but she can't help coming back for more. Slowly he begins to show a life together can be more than just a dream. It can be their reality. The truth about reality is it's not always sunshine and butterflies.
Sometimes it's a wasteland.
Sometimes secrets can't stay buried.
Sometimes your past will find a way to hunt you down.
Ok so you are enjoying a nice cute fluffy NA book with cute banter and a nice lead into the story and its going in one direction and they are so cute blah blah blah and then BAM! totally different direction. I mean like wayyyyy on the other side. It's like smashing two things together that don't fit.....
The book went into a romantic suspense direction but I had a hard time connecting with Jule's past so it left me feeling like
I mean this cute quiet girl who is dating the football star is dealing with taking down a drug lord? It just didn't fit together right...
Were there any editing or grammatical issues I had with this book?
Hmmm......3.5 stars! I think! I'm just so confused.....
Loved how this one started.....we're sucked right in with the Prologue. I loved the development of the relationship between Pax and Jules. I loved getting the flashbacks of Jules' past tying everything in to what's happening in the present. But then the story took on a whole new vibe at about the 75% mark. It felt like a completely different story. It became too focused on Jules' past. It took over the relationship between Pax and Jules. The focus changed completely. I just felt like they could have been tied together a little more smoothly maybe. It's kind of hard to explain.
Overall it was a very well written story. And it was a solid 4 star read for me up until about the 75% mark. At that point there is a pivotal "event" and everything kind of changes from there. I thought Jules completely overreacted to the situation. And it really wasn't consistent with the development of their relationship up to that point. The rest of the story was more of a WTF then anything else. IDK.....I just wasn't personally a fan of how this one ended. It felt almost like it started out as a romance and then turned in to a suspense.....and the romance was thrown out the window.
Jules is your typical heroine with a dark past starting over in a new city, ready to start a happier life. Or is she? Come to find out, there is nothing much typical about her. She is badASS and not taking any prisoners. Yeah, she gets scared, terrified at times, but she pushes through that fear and conquers it. And that, in my opinion is the definition of courageous. This girl does not back down from what she wants and I didn't always agree with what she did, but I sure as hell admired her tenacity and her demand for justice in the face of evil. I love tough, strong heroines. You will not find a whiny, weak girl here. So if that's what you're looking for, you might as well move on. (But honestly? Why would you?)
The prologue just about blew my top off, let me just say. It sunk it's claws into me and wouldn't let go for one hell of a ride. Talk about mystery and suspense! After the amazing beginning pages I read from "cover" to "cover" I could not put this sucker down all day! I was walking/reading, cleaning/reading, cooking/reading...you get the picture. Hehe. Interruptions in my obsession to finish this book kinda ended like this:
Jules and Pax have a funny and unique meeting. She is at a party with her roommate where she gets drunk for the first time and decides to roll down a big hill to get to the crowd of people down at the bottom. As she arrives at the bottom (shirt unbuttoned and all), there is Pax staring down at her.
"Hi." He waits for me to explain. "I was sledding on the grass." A pause. "I think that would require a sled." "I'm the sled." "Hmm." A longer pause. "How much have you had to drink?" "Only a little." Somehow "a little" becomes "a widdle" in my mouth. I frown.
This girl's drunken thoughts and actions had me laughing out loud!! What follows is a scene of hilarity between her and Pax that is riddled with double entendres and one liners. I don't want to give away too much, so all I'm gonna say is...
Girls RIDING football players like a bucking bronco to raise money for charity. She MAY or MAY NOT join in this activity. This scene is not to be missed. Hilarious.
Pax is the star quarterback and has a reputation as a guy unwilling to commit but ready for a good time. He's buff, funny, and your all-american athlete who's not too painful to look at. First impressions tell Jules that he's not the type to get attached to, (not that she's looking for that.) but as she gets to know him a little better, she realizes that he has so many more layers than what you see on the surface than she could have imagined. And she starts to let down her defenses. He is a crusader for a local charity and despite losing both his parents recently, bravely works to give back to the community through Hearts of Love. You just want to snatch him up, give him a cuddle and put him in your back pocket. He is so sweet and down to earth. I loved this guy. From day one, he feels that Jules is different from all the other girls. She has a vulnerability to her but she's tough as steel at the same time. He wants to unlock her secrets but Holy Hell...I don't think he knows what he's getting into with her. She has some serious baggage. We get glimpses of her past through flashbacks that gradually take us back to the present and the answer to the mystery of what she has survived. And Gawwd! It's gruesome, chilling, and the evil that she ran from is not about to let her go so easily. The ending had me biting my nails, pulling my hair out and yelling at my Kindle. Wow!
This book is not to be missed. It is dark at times, but it is so well balanced with laugh out loud humor that it has the best of both worlds. I loved BOTH the Hero and heroine, and the story had twists to it that kept it fresh and extremely captivating. I would highly recommend this book.
I really liked Pax. The story kinda has some turn of events which were...odd.
The book started, for me, confusing. It took a while for it to all come together and it didnt make a whole lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. The whole working in the "fields" at such a young age with her Grandma, then the death, and the events that transpired after. The whole ex boyfriend situation was an odd story as well. Hell, her past was like a whole other story to me. Its like i was reading two stories, one mystery and the other romance.
Pax was a great character. He had such a horrific thing happen to him that he blamed himself for. And instead of self wallowing he turned his life and actions into something beautifully positive. He also tried to get others involved in his cause as well.
I really liked the two of them together and enjoyed most of the story. In the end I felt like i was reading two stories, one mystery and the other romance. The two didnt really mesh together well for me.
Total different from most of the NA out there. I really liked it. 1st I loved the plot. I haven't read anything like it in a NA. The Summary of the book gives you no idea what it is really about. What Jules has to go through growing up is horrible, crazy and something no one should mess with. Drug cartel is a very scary thing and Great idea for a book. Pax is perfect for her and I love how it starts. It does get scary and gory (can't tell you why or it gives it away) but I think Mari wrote it perfect. Not to much. Just like the love scenes, very little detail but perfect for Jules character.
I was fortunate to be a beta-reader for this book. I have to say that I LOVED IT!! It had its dark moments but this really added to the story line and helped create a story that was riveting!!! This is a book that I could not put down until I reached the end!! The mystery and suspense keeps the reader fully engaged throughout!
I really would like to see a part 2 to this as I think there is more to tell in the relationship between Pax and Jules. I highly recommend this book once it is released!!
“I need to get in. It goes against every instinct inside me. Grandma says I’m a survivor, and she’s right. I’ve survived when all I wanted to do was crumble. I’ve stayed when I desperately wanted to run. I’ve closed my eyes, and gritted my teeth through it all because I’m a survivor.”
Jules is a broken girl, always just trying to survive but not really living. She had a terrible childhood and the teenage years were probably worse. After her grandma is murdered she tries to seek revenge. Sometimes revenge isn’t what it’s cut out to be.
“Sometimes this world is a shit fest that just doesn’t end. And, sometimes, there is hope .Sometimes your wasted land can grow again. Sometimes you can do more than just survive. You can love. You can live. You can be spontaneous.”
Jules has no plans on meeting someone, just plans to survive like she always has. After rolling into a star football player, who she might be interested in, will she go out with him and give love a chance and live, not just survive?
“Do I make you nervous?” His husky drawl drips like chocolate covering a ripe, round strawberry. Does he make me nervous? Does a simmering volcano make an ant nervous?
Pax is a star football player who can have anyone he wants, he has had women yes, but since his parents died he has felt emptiness, as if there is a void. After Jules rolls into him he decides he must have her. Can he convince her to go out with him? Will Jules past catch up with them and break everything?
“Do you know what I’ve realized, Jules? We only have one life. We can’t control what the universe decides to throw at us, but we can control how we react to it. We control the choices we make, and the people we choose to surround ourselves with.” His voice is a seduction and I lean in closer. “One, Jules. One life. One chance. Why not make it count? Why not do more than you think you can? Why not take the risk?
All I know is I feel how right this is straight to my bones. This is the man I want to take me for the first. This is the man who is my one.
This book has mystery, drama, love, and heartbreak. Your heart reaches out for Jules and all she has had to endure. She is strong, determined, and stubborn. Jules story left me heartbroken at times, to have someone go through so much and still come out a survivor is just like a breath of fresh air. Pax is such a great guy, he hasn’t had the easiest life like some people think, but he will do anything for Jules to keep her safe and happy.
We’re not two people any more. We are one.
Will Jules and Pax make it or will their troubled past tear them apart? This is s must read, the main character is not whiny despite her tuff upbringing. She is strong, she is a survivor.
I take the plunge. “I love you. I love you.” I repeat, saying it louder. “Our love should be stronger than our past. It should be strong enough to make our future.” I lean in closer, letting my mouth drop closer to his. “You’re my one, Pox,” I whisper. You’re my one leap of faith...”
I liked this author's first book so I jumped at the chance to read her second book. Apparently this is her first attempt at writing NA and she didn't disappoint! The interactions between the two main characters Pax and Jules had just the right amount of tease and steam without going overboard to erotica. At first Pax seemed to good to be true and I was afraid the author was going to make him perfect (which I don't always enjoy), but she didn't. Both the characters are flawed and relatable, and I LOVED the one liners they threw at each other!!
There's some mystery in the story (that's obvious from the tag lines on the cover of the book), and you jump right into it with the prologue. There are many light moments, but be warned there's also some darkness and grittiness that's more appropriate for older teens (it's definitely NA).
To sum it up, I really enjoyed this book. It's her best yet. I'd highly recommend this to readers. It was- no lie- very hard to put down!
Can't help but fall in love with Pax, "because if you are," he continues, "it's only fair that I get to stare, too." He's cocky, "no one needs a man," Pax replies, stepping closer. "But having a man near or in front of you might not be such a bad thing." He pauses. "Especially if they're behind you. Magical things can happen when a man is behind a woman. Want me to show you?" He's mysterious, "when I'm working, I'm Reid. When I'm on the field, I'm Pax. But you, Jules, can call me whatever you like." He's honest, "I didn't think I would find someone that I'd want to get to know so soon, but you rolled down that hill and something inside me started moving again. A lot of me started moving again, actually." And Jules has a temper bless her heart, "is she your mistress?" I accuse, stepping forward. "Your sl**? Your plaything? Do you two laugh about me at night? How I fell so easily for your charm?" I liked this book and I wouldn't mind seeing a few other characters in the book get a story.
Do you enjoy bad tropes? Are you looking for a book to spark complete annoyance in you? Have you ever fallen in love at first sight? Then this is the book for you. Bad tropes you can expect to find in this novel: Beautiful main character that thinks she is ugly Insta-love (major, major insta-love) Over protective male protagonists A lot of heart felt life altering prose Useless best friend that is only in the book to tell our main character her new BF is THE BEST EVER and she is making a mistake to let him go.
I don't even really know where to begin. I got this book on Kindle a while ago, and have decided to read all my backlists.
This was excruciating to get through and i ended up skimming a lot of the end. I found none of the characters likeable, especially Pax and... Um.. Jules? I think the concept was interesting, I understand the dark past, and the need to be accepted and loved. But this fell flat to me.
'One' held me captive from the moment I started reading and took me down a path I never expected. This new adult read provides an emotional roller-coaster of a plot, one that is fast paced, emotive and effectively developed.
The author, Mari Arden, has successfully crafted a book with characters who are easy to identify with and a story line that will challenge the reader. There are moments of palpable tension surrounding truly horrific events that will leave the reader gasping for air and no doubt needing a moment of serenity to calm their heart rate.
It's the creation of this suspense, teamed with the sweet, and at times, hot romance (non-graphic sex scenes), that makes 'One' such a fabulous read. Be sure to 'don't think just buy' this wonderful read.
So the popular guy gets the girl surprise surprise. Quite frankly I wasn't feeling it and at times I felt rushed and then I felt confused. I wanted to like the story because I like damsels in distress but really I felt it could have been consistent. A good prologue that left me wanting for more. However the chapters left me bereft of that anticipation that I was feeling for in the beginning. The suspense got old after awhile and then the ending left something to be desired.
Overall the characters were well written and likable plus the potential story left no doubt for my 4 star ratings.
my god. This book was weird. Weird in a bad way I guess because what the hell was going on in the actual book? The flashbacks were really weird and unexpected which threw me off completely. I hate flashbacks like the ones used in this novel but they also were word linked to the next chapter of the present day (which was kinda good, smart even) but still I was in the dark about whether this book was going to wind me up even more or if i'd just get rid of it.
I wanted to like this one more. I can't put my finger on it, but there was just something about the story that I couldn't connect with. I really liked Pax. The author gave him some great one liners, but unfortunately, that didn't save the story for me.
I loved Pax!! This story took some interesting twists and turns but I have to say I don't think I have read this story line before. All in all a good book.
One is a book I neither loved nor hated. Though, there were aspects that I both loved and hated. Normally, the existence of both extreme emotions would have me rating a book rather high. However, there was just something that kept me from raving about One.
One starts off as a light, fun story of a college student. Jules hails from a small town existence and you learn early on that she has some skeletons, so she's fairly lost in the hustle and bustle of a large university atmosphere. Jules starts to find a place in this world when she finds a job, meets some friends and starts a sweet romance with the school football star, Pax.
The relationship that forms between Pax and Jules was one of the things I loved. Pax is relentless in his yearning to get to know, learn to love and want to protect Jules. Jules really tries to overcome her past to find happiness and hope in a relationship with Pax. It's not an easy road for either, but the struggle and the want is what made it work for me.
Those skeletons I mentioned were also one of the things I loved. Jules past is unconventional and I really enjoyed the slow reveal of it. It gave the story a dark edge, something sad yet exciting.
Those skeletons, that past...when it comes back to haunt Jules - that is where the story began to fall apart. It brought an element of terror, which I would have raved about, if done differently. However, how it all shook out was entirely too dramatic and unbelievable for me. Not all of it, mind you. Just a couple of elements. But it was those couple of elements that stuck in jaw and I couldn't shake them.
I don't believe every reader will have my same problems and I can see many people loving this story and it's dark turn of events. So, please don't only take my view on it when deciding weather or not to read One. You'll get some great characters, some good drama and some sweet romance - if you chance it, that I can promise.
" I want to live, Pax. And it means being strong. It means not letting what happened in your past overshadow your future. It means being able to look behind you and not letting it stop you from going forward."
By far this is the first book that I've read where I've overly highlighted quotes on my kindle. And all of them are so relatable! I love it!
I find it so ironic that I chose a book with the same character name as my last book I read. xD
Anyways this has got to be the most unpleasant book i've read so far. Not saying the story its was unpleasant, no that isn't the case. Its what happen at the end. The red room specifically. I was not expecting that part. I can say I was glued to my kindle when poor Jules was in the room. Then when the doctor started cutting her. I wanted to puke. The disgusting thing is people do that shit everyday. Ugh! I just cant stomach bodies being cut up. Thats me though.
Well, since I just jumped into the part that shocked me the most up there. Might as well add What I thought of Jules and Pax. Hands down I loved them except at the part where Alaina kissed Pax and he kissed her back. Jules was completely honest with herself to Pax after they slept together she told him everything and he didn't tell her anything. She had to see it for her herself which was so fucked up on Pax's part but I forgive him because he's actually a good guy. I normally am not for good boys i'm more for the bad boys. But Pax is a exception. He fell for Jules so quickly and it was freaking adorable! Not even cheesy either! :)
Overall, I enjoyed reading this story besides learning about the red room. I could've lived without visioning it but thats besides the point. I recommend this book to anyone who can handle troubling situations.
Jules is all alone in the world. When her grandmother was alive, they used to make things work together. Life was tough and sometimes they could barely manage but at least they had each other. Now she is gone and Jules is in college. But her past is far from behind her. Images haunt her. Some people are looking for her. She knows she is in danger... But she still falls for Pax. He is not what she expected of a jock. Sure, he is gorgeous, but he has history too. Depth. And in another way, his past is far from over too. And now, their pasts are going to collude with their present...
I don't know what I expected. More babbling maybe. But Jules is special. She has a voice that is different from most girls in books. Also, she has been through different experiences that haunts her. I really liked her voice. She was a lot more reasonable than other main characters. It's just that I didn"t expect a romance book to turn into some kind of thriller at the end. I found the thriller somewhat lacking. I do like thriller, but I need a very competent main character to uphold it. And Jules is a great romance character but she is not a great thriller character. Even Pax lacked the charisma of "the savior of the day" though he was more convincing than Jules. All in all, it was still a good book and I would recommend it. Just be aware of the drastic change of genre at the end of the book.

In a nutshell, I thought this book was "Fabusometasticful". Fabulous, awesome, fantastic and wonderful. Really good read. :)
My first reaction after reading this was, Holy cannoli what the heck did I just read? LOL!!! But before I get to that, I have to say that I really enjoyed this book and really liked the characters. Pax - he just oozed charm and he was likable right from the beginning. Jules... I loved how she was "ordinary" but different and beautiful in her own way. I loved her honesty and strength and perseverance and the fact that she was little. Hehe, my favorite line, "Fairies are the new Disney princessess, mark my words. We're going to be seeing wings and fairy dust instead of ball gowns and boobies." Oh how I hope so!!! And I loved Pax & Jules together. I loved their banter and silly sarcastic conversations. Loved it!!! But back to the story... nothing prepared me for what craziness was going to happen to Jules. All of you who read the book - you know what I'm talking about! The author was very detailed and graphic and I was like gahhhh!!!!! That totally surprised me! "Fabusometasticful"
The story had the potential to be great. Its frame and plot line reminded me of Nothing To Lose by Kristey Moseley with the dark drama coupled with a relationship rather than the fluffy stuff that most middle class college students deal with...it showed a different and rare reality....but it wasn't seemless enough with the major focus, the relationship. Concise is key but as a writer, being too concise creates plotholes and choppiness. The story was good but rushed, especially during pivotal scenes that should have been thoroughly exhibited rather than breezed over (like major fight scenes, sex scenes, truth scenes, relationship building scenes with all characters, and even flashbacks). It would have been great if it was thoroughly written because the potholes made it feel as though I was missing major information. However, the story was pretty good.
I loved the cover of the book. That alone made me decide to purchase the book even though the rating was so so. The storyline had a good flow and the chemistry was naturally developed. I wouldn't consider the relationship between Pax and Jules an insta loved. I felt the emotions between characters and relatable. I was really sad how Jules had a hard life growing up. One thing that I liked the best was the romance development. Pax was so hot. Not crazy about how Pax reacted to Aria's behavior romantically. The reason why I didn't give this a 5 was the ending was a bit rushed. An epilogue would have been nice to tie it up. Also, some of the Jules past recalls the first two was unnecessary. Overall, I recommend this book since it has relatable, interesting plot, hot alpha foot player as the H, and a good HE A. Go ahead give this book a shot.
Ya this book was definitely Fabusometasticful. Fabulous.. Awesome.. Fantastic.. Wonderful. :-)
Reading the synopsis for this book will in no way prepare you for what the story is really about. The prologue alone is a clear indicator. Wowza! I loved this book and am surprised it didn't get better reviews. I'm glad I didn't let a lot of the reviews sway me not to read it cause that would have been a big mistake. This book and the characters pulled me in and took me on a crazy ride. Pax and Jules...just wow. Their connection felt so real and made me feel like I was experiencing the emotional roller coaster with them...and that's my definition of a good book. This is not a book to pass up on.
I see that there are some mixed reviews for this story. I enjoyed reading this book, enough to rate it as high as I did. I liked the fact that it was not predictable as some books can be. If you are wanting to read just another simple love story this is not it. It has a good plot, and I think the ending was a good one.
I purchase many books at a time and then go down the line and read them. I had read the description when I bought this book, but didn't right before starting the book. Funny thing was that I started to read the prologue and wondered what book I was starting and if it was a paranormal romance...I see now that I was wrong.
