ആൽഫ | Alpha
The novel “Alpha” by T D Ramakrishnan can be described one of the best imaginary creations in Malayalam. The book is about an anonymous island in Sri Lanka. Residing at the south end of Sri Lanka, somewhere in Indian Ocean, the island is unknown to other world. The readers will definitely enjoy the treasures and excitement while reading the story.

This is not a novel - it is an idea for one.
I remember reading William Golding's Lord of the Flies in my teens. It was in translation, but the story absolutely blew me away. A few years later, I made it a point to search out the original and read it, and was fascinated all over again.
Golding wrote his novel as a counterpoint to The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne which told the tale of three British boys marooned on an island and who uphold the values of comradeship, truth and valour. He wanted to prove that in an isolated society, mankind will slowly "devolve" to bestial levels, rather than remaining upright human beings. And Golding made his point rather forcefully.
The reason for my mentioning the novel here is, T. D. Ramakrishnan also sets out to prove something similar in Alpha. A group of 12 young people, led by the middle-aged professor of anthropology Prof. Utpalendu Chatterjee, leave behind civilisation to return totally to nature - on the island "Alpha" in the Indian Ocean, situated 759 kilometres south of Sri Lanka and with an area of only 17.75 square kilometres. Here, the experimenters who are themselves the subjects leave behind everything (including their clothes), literally burn their boat, and start a new life on the island. After twenty-five years, they are to be contacted by a person whom only the professor knows.
The professor believed that free from the constraints of society, they would establish a colony of new and superior human beings - but what Avinash, the person who comes to meet them after twenty-five years finds is a society of semi-intelligent beings totally sunk into a bestial lifestyle. Only three of the original inhabitants are alive and are rescued: and through them, interspersed with the biographical notes on each participant prepared by Professor Chatterjee at the beginning of the experiment, the story unfolds...
...Only, there is not much to unfold.
It is a repetitive tale of violence, rape and incest: how each of the participants lost their veneer of refinement and culture and became savages. The author seems to place very low stock on the innate goodness of human beings. While in Golding's tale, the descent into savagery is very convincingly done, here it is abrupt. It is as though they were waiting for a chance to rape and kill each other.
The women are repeatedly raped by the men, and the children are left to fend for themselves after they are weaned of breast milk: this is not true even of primitive man, as the famous anthropologist Desmond Morris has made clear. Pair bonding between male and female is biological, because the human child takes a long time to mature and family life is essential. So as human beings evolved, the family came into being naturally. It is difficult to believe that this group will lose it so fast, even though common sex is one of the "rules" of the experiment.
Another drawback of the book is that none of the characters are well-drawn: we don't care enough about them to feel anything when something happens to them. Ramakrishnan is a novelist of ideas, but when your characters become so one-dimensional, any novelist has to stop and think.
Two stars for a brave new idea in Malayalam literature.

രാമകൃഷ്ണന്റെ "ഫ്രാൻസിസ് ഇട്ടിക്കോര" എന്നാ നോവല വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു വളരെ പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെ ആണ് "ആല്ഫാ " വായിക്കാൻ പുറപ്പെട്ടത് . നോവലിന്റെ അവതരണത്തിലും പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലും പുതുമ ഉണ്ടാകും എന്ന് ഫ്രാൻസിസ് ഇട്ടിക്കോര വായിച്ചതിൽ നിന്ന് ഞാൻ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചു . ഒരു അസാധാരണ പരീക്ഷണം അതും വളരെ പ്രശസ്തരായ വ്യക്തികൾ തന്നെ പരീക്ഷണ വസ്തുവായി മാറുന്ന കാഴ്ച അതൊരു പുതുമ തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഒരു വ്യക്തികളിലൂടെ അവർ ഉന്നയിക്കുന്ന ന്യായവാദങ്ങൾ ആണ് എനിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടപെടാതെ ഇരുന്നത് . "ലൈംഗിക സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം ഒരു രാജ്യത്തിൻറെ ഉന്നതിയിലേക് നയിക്കും" എന്നൊക്കെ പറയുന്നതിലൂടെ എന്താണ് നോവലിസ്റ്റ് പറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നത് എന്നാണ് എനിക്ക് മനസിലാകാത്തത്. ശാസ്ത്രവും സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യയും എല്ലാം മനുഷ്യന്റെ സമൂഹതിറെ ഗുണത്തിന് ഉപകരിക്കുന്ന വിധത്തിൽ ആയിരിക്കണം, "ഹിരോഷിമയെ പറ്റി കുറച്ചു പേര് കരയുമ്പോൾ , കുറച്ചുപേർ ചിരിക്കുന്നു", ഏതാണ്ട് ഈ അവസ്ഥ തന്നെ ആണ് ഈ നോവലിലും . 47 പേരുടെ ജീവിതവും അവരുടെ സ്വപ്നങ്ങളും തകര്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക മാത്രമല്ല അവരെ മൃഗമായി മാറ്റിയിരിക്കുന്നു . അപക്വമായ പരീഷണങ്ങളും കണ്ടുപിടുത്തങ്ങളും മനുഷ്യന്റെ നാശത്തിനു കാരണമാകുന്ന അവസ്ഥ ഇതിൽ കാണുന്നു.

You can't not think of Lord of the Flies while reading this.
A bunch of folks leaving everything behind and heading for an island away from civilization - to observe the evolution of human traits.
Only it was too one dimensional - with a contaminated experiment to begin with. There is a difference when you don't have a common language, against when you "pretend" not having one!
Full marks for the smooth translation.

As we developed into a more ‘civilized’ way of life, the rigidity of societal rules have not gone down. In an Indian context, sexual liberation is something that is frowned upon for it is always beaten down by that rotten cudgel of morality. There is always the watchdog of morality waiting in the shadows to pounce upon you for even the slightest transgression and such slights are never forgiven by the society. Someone who tries to break free of these shackles is labeled one of the two : a lunatic or a wanton spoilt brat. There are no other buckets into which you would be categorized and there is also a measure of social stigma such a person will run into in some of the more orthodox states of the nation. This is at an individual level, so what about the collective level ? Let’s take a look at one of the most prominent political presences in Kerala : Communism. While it has been exiled or metamorphosed into a different shape in its parent countries, there are a few states that still have a strong presence of this ideology. The belief system of the party mandates that any and all who tread beyond the lines marked out by the collective ( or even the party secretary for that matter) are to be shunned. By shunning, I do not restrict myself to social ostracism, there have been political assassinations for the simple reason that someone displayed independent thought and refused to bow down to party diktats.
What I am driving at is the power of rules and norms in our society. On the positive side, they prevent a slide into absolute anarchy and on the negative side they restrict the free spirit that flutters within us. But then there is a question, if we were to imagine a sub section of our society to be isolated at a remote place that takes off the need for any rules ( be it wearing clothes, using language or sexual limitations ) and make them absolutely free, what would they become ? Would we have a highly enlightened set of souls rejoicing while sipping the nectar of freedom ? Or would we develop into a bunch of beasts ? Alpha explains this possibility in detail. It tells the story of Upalendu Chatterjee, a renowned anthropologist who takes a group of 25 men and women to a deserted island and sets them free of all social dogmas. They are even barred from using language and anything that pertains to modern civilization. They hope to start from the stone age and it is an experiment to understand how quickly we can evolve. And what happens ? A reporter, a poet, a dancer all finally end up as animals. Unbridled lust and streaks of violence start marring their once refined facades. They mate like mad and kill each other in the process. Slowly but surely, the island becomes populated by children who receive none of the attention they deserve and end up being feral. This is their story and how 25 years irrevocably mould them.
The first thing that struck me was the unsympathetic way in which the author treated the characters. We view them as objects in a scientific experiment and not people in flesh and blood even when most of them where stereotypes of what we refer to as a ‘flawed character’. Ramakrishnan spends a lot of time on trying to understand the deeper aspects of anthropology and mass political movements like socialism and communism and the effects they have on the general populace. The end result of this being that it reads like a textbook rather than a novel and I gave up trying to relate to it emotionally after a few chapters. The work is not as gory as the author’s famous Francis Ittikora but there is an intense presence of sexuality and violence in the plot. It is not the kind of a storyline to hold you taut but one where you have to spend some time reflecting on the issues in our social fabric that it highlights.

If you are told that you have to live on a secluded island with some people, where you can't use any language to communicate with each other or will not be able to use any pre-educated social knowledge, You have to be lived like the primitive human for 25 years !!! Then what will be your reaction??
Alpha by T.D Ramakrishnan is a story about such an experiment I encountered that raised a lot of questions in my mind... And among them the important one is whether this research or experiment were truly needed or not ?? Isn't it a kind of madness to live life like a beast in 21st century for sake of an experimentation and this is also for 25 years!!
Dr. Upalendu Chatterjee, an anthropologist who is the pioneer of this experiment and 13 more who have different background and also have their own reasons to be a part of this bizarre bold and raw observation!!
Can you guess what would happen to those 14 people who decided to leave every kind of socialism behind them... how would they survive suddenly in this way?? What would be the final result of such experimentation after 25 years??
No doubt it was an fascinating read for me, intrigued to know the result !! Here in 25 years lust, love, loneliness, the urge to live, everything seems to have become one .. And as a reader I was little bit frustrated at not being able to find answers to some of the questions, not even finding the rationale for some of the facts !!
But eventually I couldn't ignore another fact that is the uniqueness, refreshment of this tale and the way Ramakrishnan crafts the story, I felt like I was reading a true incident, the names, the places didn't seem fictional !!

തുടക്കത്തിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയാൽ നടന്ന ദുരന്തങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെ മായ്ക്കുവാൻ കഴിയുമോ ? പ്രൊഫസർ ഉപലേന്ദു ചാറ്റർജി മുന്നിൽ വച്ച ഉപായമാണ് ആദിയിലേക്കുള്ള മടക്കം. അതിനായി അദ്ദേഹം പല മേഖലയിലും ഉള്ള 13 പേരെയും കൊണ്ട് ആൽഫ എന്ന ദ്വീപിലേക്ക് യാത്രയാകുന്നു. 25 വർഷങ്ങൾ ഭാഷയും, വസ്ത്രവും എന്ന് വേണ്ട ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായ എല്ലാത്തിനെയും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു ആൽഫയിൽ കഴിയുക എന്നതാണ് അവരുടെ കടമ.സ്വതന്ത്രമായ ഭാഷയും സംസ്കാരവും പൈതൃകവും വളർത്തി നരവംശത്തിന്റെ പുതിയ സാധ്യതകളെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുക എന്നായിരുന്നു പ്രൊഫസർ ഇതുകൊണ്ട് ഉദേശിച്ചത്.

🏝️ടി.ഡി രാമകൃഷ്ണൻ്റെ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക എല്ലാ നോവലുകളും വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ആദ്യനോവലായ ആൽഫ വായിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചത് ഇപ്പോഴാണ്. സുഗന്ധി, ഇട്ടിക്കോര, മാമ ആഫ്രിക്ക, പച്ച മഞ്ഞ ചുവപ്പ് എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ തന്നെ മികച്ച നോവലുകളുടെ അത്രക്കും ഈ നോവൽ എത്തിയിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് തോന്നി. അതൊരുപക്ഷേ, ഇത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ ആദ്യനോവലായതുകൊണ്ടും മികച്ച നോവലുകൾ ഞാൻ മുമ്പ് വായിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടും ആയിരിക്കാം. വളരെ ചെറിയൊരു നോവലാണെങ്കിലും അത് പറയാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന ആശയം വളരെ വലുതാണ്. "Simple but powerful" എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുന്ന നോവലും ആശയവുമാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ പറഞ്ഞുവെക്കുന്നത്.

ആദിയിൽ വെളളമുണ്ടായി. വെള്ളത്തിൽനിന്നും കൊച്ചുകൊച്ചു ജീവികളും. അമീബ മുതൽ മുകളിലോട്ട്. ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് വർഷങ്ങൾകൊണ്ട് വളർന്ന ആ ജൈവവ്യവസ്ഥ ചെടികളും മരങ്ങളും പക്ഷികളും മൃഗങ്ങളും മനുഷ്യനുമുള്ള ഒരു വലിയ ജീവശൃംഖലയായി. രാത്രികൾ പകലുകളെയും പകലുകൾ രാത്രികളെയും ആദരിച്ചും ആനയിച്ചും മുന്നോട്ടുപോയപ്പോൾ മനുഷ്യൻ മറ്റു ജീവികളിൽനിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തനായി. ബുദ്ധി എന്ന അത്ഭുതസിദ്ധി അവനെ പ്രപഞ്ചത്തെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ളവനാക്കി. പ്രകൃതിയെ മുഴുവൻ അവൻ സ്വന്തം ആവശ്യത്തിനായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചു. അനുസരിച്ചവരെ അടിമകളാക്കിയും എതിർത്തവരെ നശിപ്പിച്ചും അവൻ ഈ ജൈവവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ ഉടമയായി.
ഭൂമിയുടെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ പലതരം ഭാഷകളും സംസ്കാരവുമായി, കോട്ടയും കൊത്തളങ്ങളും കെട്ടി, സമാധാനത്തെക്കാളേറെ യുദ്ധത്തിലൂടെ അവർ പുരോഗമിച്ചു. ചോരപ്പുഴകളിൽ വളർച്ചയുടെ കഥകളെഴുതി, സത്യത്തേക്കാളേറെ അഹന്തയിലൂടെയും ചതിയിലൂടെയും ഒരു വംശം വളർന്നു. ഒന്നായിരുന്ന ഭൂമി പല രാജ്യങ്ങളായി, അവയുടെ അതിർത്തികളായി, അതിർത്തിത്തർക്കങ്ങളായി ചിന്നിച്ചിതറി. അടിമത്തവും കോളനിവാഴ്ചയും അതിനെതിരെയുള്ള സമരങ്ങളും സംഹാരരുദ്രമായ ആയുധങ്ങളും നിരായുധീകരണചർച്ചകളും അതെല്ലാം വളർച്ചയുടെ പടവുകളായിരുന്നു.
അവനെ നല്ലവനും സമാധാനപ്രിയനും മാന്യനുമാക്കാനായി അനേകം മതങ്ങളും പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളും ഉടലെടുത്തു. യേശുവും ബുദ്ധനും നബിയും ഗാന്ധിയുമൊക്കെ അവന് രക്ഷയുടെയും സ്നേഹത്തിൻ്റെയും വഴി ഉപദേശിച്ചു. ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ മുതൽ കാൾ മാർക്സ് വരെ ധർമസംസ്ഥാപനത്തിനായി ആയുധമുപയോഗിക്കാനും അതിനുശേഷം സമത്വപൂർണ്ണമായ ജീവിതം നയിക്കാനും പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. പക്ഷേ, ദ്വാരകയിലെയും സോവിയറ്റ് റഷ്യയിലെയും അനന്തര തലമുറകൾ തമ്മിലടിച്ചു നശിച്ചു. മനുഷ്യനെ നല്ലവനാക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചവർക്കെല്ലാം തെറ്റുപറ്റുകയായിരുന്നു. അവൻ അടിസ്ഥാനപരമായി സ്വാർത്ഥതയും അഹങ്കാരവുമുള്ള ചതിയും വഞ്ചനയും പരിശീലിച്ച, കാമവും ക്രോധവും നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു ചീത്തമൃഗമായിരുന്നു. അവനു മാത്രമുള്ള ചിരി കാപട്യത്തിൻ്റെ മൂടുപടമായിരുന്നു.

ആൽഫ എന്ന ദ്വീപിലേക്ക് നരവംശത്തിന്റെ പുതുസാധ്യതകളെ തേടി ഇരങ്ങിത��രിക്കുന്ന 13 പേരുടെ കഥയാണിത്. പല രംഗത്തുനിന്നുള്ള പലർ.
സദാചാരത്തിന്റെയും കാപട്യത്തിന്റെയും മുഖംമൂടികൾക്കപ്പുറത്ത് സ്വതന്ത്രമായ ഒരു സംസ്കാരവും പൈതൃകവും വളർത്താനാണ് അവർ ശ്രമിച്ചത്.
പ്രൊഫസർ ഉപലേന്ദു ചാറ്റർജി എന്ന ആന്ത്രപ്പോളജിസ്റ്റിന്റെ ചിന്തയിൽ ഉദയം ചെയ്ത ഈ ആശയം പലയിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും പലരിലേക്കും വിനിമയം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുകയായിരുന്നു. 25 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം പരസ്പരസംവേദനങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാതെയും തങ്ങൾ നേടിയ അറിവുകൾ അല്പം പോലും പ്രയോഗത്തിൽ വരുത്താതെയുമുള്ള ഒരൊറ്റപ്പെട്ട ദ്വീപിലെ ജീവിതം പാശ്ചാത്യനാടുകളിലേതുപോലെയുള്ള പുരോഗമന�� പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് അവർ വിശ്വസിച്ചു. പിന്നീട്, ഉപലേന്ദു ചാറ്റർജിയുടെ മുൻ നിർദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം
അവരെ തേടി 25 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ഒരു കപ്പൽ കരയ്ക്കടുക്കുമ്പോൾ അവരിൽ അവശേഷിച്ചത് മൂന്നുപേർ മാത്രം; മാലിനി, സന്തോഷ്, ഊർമിള. അവരിലൂടെയാണ് ഇൗ പരീക്ഷണം പുറംലോകമറിയുന്നത്. ഈ പരീക്ഷണം തികച്ചും പരാജയമായിരുന്നെന്നും ആൽഫയിലെ പുതിയ തലമുറ വളർന്നു വന്നത് പ്രാകൃതരായാണെന്നും അവർ തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു. ഒടുവിൽ, തങ്ങൾ അവശേഷിപ്പിച്ച തലമുറയിലെ ബാക്കിയുള്ളവരെ തേടി അവർ തിരികെ ആൽഫയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുന്നു.
ആശയത്തിലെ പുതുമ തീർച്ചയായും "ആൽഫ"യെ വേറിട്ടു നിർത്തുന്നു. പക്ഷേ എവിടെയൊക്കെയോ ചില പതര്ച്ചകൾ "ആൽഫ"യുടെ ഒഴുക്കിനെ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട് . ചിലയിടങ്ങളിലെ ആശയാവർത്തനം വിരസതയായി മാറി. പ്രൊഫസർ നെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചില വിവരണങ്ങളും അവിടുത്തെ കുട്ടികളുടെ ജീവിതസാഹചര്യങ്ങളും എല്ലാം പലവട്ടം ആവർത്തിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ആശയ ക്രോഡീകരണത്തിൽ സംഭവിച്ച പാകപ്പിഴകൾ ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ ഇതിനെ ഒരു അസംഭവ്യമായ രചനയാക്കി മാറ്റിയോ എന്നു തോന്നിപ്പോയി. വലിയ ഒരാശയം സംവേദനം ചെയ്യാൻ കഥാകൃത്ത് കാണിച്ച തിടുക്കമാകാം ഇതിനെ അവിശ്വസനീയമാക്കി തീർത്തത് എന്നു തോന്നുന്നു.
സദാചാരത്തിന്റെയും കാപട്യത്തിന്റെയും മുഖംമൂടികൾക്കപ്പുറത്ത് സ്വതന്ത്രമായ ഒരു സംസ്കാരവും പൈതൃകവും വളർത്താനാണ് അവർ ശ്രമിച്ചത്.

ആശയത്തിലെ പുതുമ തീർച്ചയായും "ആൽഫ"യെ വേറിട്ടു നിർത്തുന്നു. പക്ഷേ എവിടെയൊക്കെയോ ചില പതര്ച്ചകൾ "ആൽഫ"യുടെ ഒഴുക്കിനെ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട് . ചിലയിടങ്ങളിലെ ആശയാവർത്തനം വിരസതയായി മാറി. പ്രൊഫസർ നെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചില വിവരണങ്ങളും അവിടുത്തെ കുട്ടികളുടെ ജീവിതസാഹചര്യങ്ങളും എല്ലാം പലവട്ടം ആവർത്തിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ആശയ ക്രോഡീകരണത്തിൽ സംഭവിച്ച പാകപ്പിഴകൾ ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ ഇതിനെ ഒരു അസംഭവ്യമായ രചനയാക്കി മാറ്റിയോ എന്നു തോന്നിപ്പോയി. വലിയ ഒരാശയം സംവേദനം ചെയ്യാൻ കഥാകൃത്ത് കാണിച്ച തിടുക്കമാകാം ഇതിനെ അവിശ്വസനീയമാക്കി തീർത്തത് എന്നു തോന്നുന്നു.

Most of us will not be satisfied with 'Alpha' .. and thats mainly because most of us reach 'Alpha' after reading the classical 'Franscis Itticora' by same author :)
The'Alpha' in the novel is all about an anthropological experimentation and just like that the novel itself is an experimentation in literature. Its one thing to get inspiration from things you see around and write fiction based on it. But its even more challenging to write some thing purely based on imagination.
But somehow I felt the ending was somewhat abrupt and could have been developed a bit more. However I liked the book for its courage to take a totally different route

Too shallow
The premise was interesting enough. As I read from another review, I was reminded of 'lord of the flies'. I felt more depth could have been given to the characters. More description of their descent into anarchy.

Alpha by T.D. Ramakrishnan was originally written in Malayalam and translated into English by Priya K. Nair. It is about a human experiment and what happened during and aftermath of the experiment. The experiment was conducted on a remote island devoid of any connection with the outside world. The purpose is to find out if they can achieve in twenty-five years what humanity has achieved over generations. Twelve people, along with their leader, an anthropological professor, were part of the experiment. All of them need to discard communication using known languages and must begin anew. There won’t be any moral, social, religious or any other obligations. They can have complete freedom. Twenty-five years later, only three of the thirteen have survived.
I liked the story idea. The prose is simple and engrossing till the ending. The ending is quite surprising too. The translation is good and easy to read. Still, the story felt like a summary of a story which had yet to be written. Characters lacked depth like a sketch yet to be fully drawn. In twenty-five years on the island, many things happened - births, deaths, assaults, killings, rapes, pregnancies, miscarriages, depression dwelling into madness, men turning into animals, animals turning into beasts, losing morality, discarding the minimal sense of humanity, learning the ways of the wild, communication using the sounds of birds and animals and what not. The transformation of characters during these incidents was sudden and fleeting. Because of that, the incidents seemed not convincing enough and left not much impact on the story.

Imagine a world not bound by societal norms and laws… seems idyllic, doesnt it?? But then, for how long does the dream last? In the absence of lines of propriety, what ensues is chaos.
When a Professor in anthropology decides to embark on a study in a remote island, devoid of modern amenities, or rather human touch itself, he hopes that with the current evolutionary pattern, and high intellect attained, man would come back to the present, even in the absence of it. But he unwittingly pushes himself and his companions into a world of chaos, which had felt like a paradise for maybe a short span of time. Man returned to being a beast left to the elements, with no means or characteristics of higher intellect, and the children born are reminiscent of early man, or savages as we call them.
Alpha.. took them back to the very beginning of time.
Set in the political backdrop of Bangladesh splitting from India, and the iron fist rule of a Prime Minister hell bent on making history according to her rules, everyone who had set off in the expedition, had a personal agenda. The professor himself was running from this semi-dictator, and the others from social norms that prevented them from being their true selfs. But, as they find their true selfs, in the absense of social norms and propriety, they find their deepest darkest versions, primitive and power hungry, and it becomes the ultimate survival of the fittest.
Even as the book goes into its darkest aspects, it mostly delves into the psyche of a man power hungry enough to kill, rape and kill again. It brought a picture of primitive man being predominantly a rapist of sorts, the traits passing into the subsequent generations as well, where the show of power is domination over women. The dynamics of the early hunter- gatherer part was not a lart of the scheme at all, and every one was for oneself.
The scientific aspect of it is questionable at places, as history teaches us that humans survived in packs, and the very philosophically worded aspects of the mysteries of aging and death, is actually explained by science to an extent. I presume that what the author had in mind was to showcase the absolute anarchy and chaos that ensues with the proposed ultimate freedom.

TD Ramakrishnan's Alpha, translated from the Malayalam by Priya K Nair has a fascinating premise: can the inherent rules and belief systems created by society be discarded? If yes, what would happen to people if everything as we know, including communication by voice and language is discontinued? In Alpha, an anthropologist takes on his intellectual pursuit of a new world devoid of any remains of the past, one that goes back to the roots of civilization in a sense: those who take part in the pursuit must discard everything they know, including their clothes.
Twelve people follow the anthropologist of their own volition on this ground breaking experiment to an isolated island (named Alpha) in the Indian ocean, an experiment that will last 25 years, one that is determined to create a more egalitarian and stronger society. They are totally cut off from not just the physical world outside of the island and are to be contacted when the experiment is over.
Through this premise, the author dwells deep into the concept of social functioning and what freedom really means: whether by discarding known concepts, one can forge new ones and if by letting go of one's knowledge and socio-cultural belief systems, one lets go of prejudices as well. After the 25 years are up, there are only 3 people alive with the rest dying due to illnesses, some by suicide and others being killed. What happens to the 13 people on the island and how, forms the core of this slim novel.Alpha is speculative fiction and political philosophy brought together in a short narrative that follows the lives of the 13 inhabitants of Alpha before the experiment and what happens to them there.
Instead of the individual chapters on the 13 protagonists and inhabitants of Alpha as narrated by the survivors, it would have been more fulfilling to get to follow the characters on a closer level. I felt the narrative style could have been better.

പ്രമേയം കൊണ്ട് വ്യത്യസ്തത പുലർത്തി എങ്കിലും 'ആൽഫ യുടെ ആഖ്യാനശൈലിയും അന്ത്യവും പ്രമേയത്തോട് നൂറ് ശതമാനം നീതി പുലർത്തിയില്ല എന്നാണ് എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയത്. ഒരു സുദീർഘമായ നോവലിനുള്ള സാധ്യതയെ കേവലം ഹ്രസ്വ നോവലായി ചുരുക്കപ്പെടുത്തിയതും ആശയങ്ങളുടെ ആവർത്തന വിരസതയും ( ലൈംഗികജീവിതം, ദ്വീപിലെ അന്തേവാസികളുടെ ബുദ്ധിയെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പരാമർശം) നോവലിൻ്റെ ആസ്വാദനത്തെ സാരമായി ബാധിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. പ്രമേയം മനസ്സിനെ കീഴടക്കി എങ്കിലും പ്രതീക്ഷകൾക്ക് അനുസരിച്ച ഉയരാതെ പോയ വായനാനുഭവം.

All that is known of the experiment to the outside world that a group of twelve people who were scholars, teachers, artists were headed by the scientist and professor Upelendu Chatterjee to a journey to the life of the past. The people were urged to let go of the knowledge that they had learnt in civilized society, abandon their language and evolutionary attributes that they possessed. The original thirteen people who arrived in the unclaimed land, started surviving in the rawest and most primitive form. They lived like animals and they were driven with their animal instincts, their lifestyle verified that they had shed their humanity along with their clothes.
Twenty five years later, as the experiment reaches the end of its time scale, only three of the original inhabitants of the island has survived. Life had continued to exist from the original inhabitants, but not all had survived the tell the tale of this anthropological experiment that was quite atypical. From the documents of the professor and the narratives of the survivors, an account of this undaunted experiment is witnessed.
Alpha by T.D. Ramakrishnan, translated from Malayalam by Priya K. Nair is a piece of speculative fiction where the narrative is motivated by political entangling and a thirst for scientific progress. The premise had great potential, but the chapter wise account of the inhabitants fell flat. It felt unresolved and quite unnecessarily philosophical at places, which could have been avoided with a story better weaved. The haphazard chapters hindered my interest but incase it is favourable to the reader, this book can be a quite unique read.
P.S. At certain places it reminded me of Satyajit Ray's character Professor Shonku and his adventures, but unfortunately it cannot be compared with Ray's masterful storytelling.

The novel started off so well that after finishing 3 chapters I felt like it was going to be great reading experience. But I was wrong even though I finished it in one sitting. Even after reading a fiction or even a fantasy, one has to be convinced of the logic of the story once they have been completely transported to the imaginary world the writer has created with words. But, What alpha lacks is conviction. It is too peripheral. When dealing with a topic as complex as anthropology, the author should not risk being too peripheral. As a reader, I wanted to know more about their life in the island, in detail. I would have preferred it being a little more of an adventure novel. May be it is due to the direct influences of my childhood favourites like Lord of the flies, Robinson Crusoe, and even The adventures of Tom Sawyer that had shaped my reading habits to a large extent. Even so, I love novels with a philosophical flourish. In that case,as I wrote earlier, story and the analysis have to be much more convincing and the vocabulary , a little more seducing. The changes, both physical and mental, both circumspect and impetuous, both barbarous and spiritual should have been expounded and analysed attentively before reaching a conclusion. Which the author didn't do and I am neither convinced nor satisfied.

The book 'Abhaya:The Destroyer of Adharma' by Saiswaroopa Iyer is a mythological fiction book and it explores some stories portrayed in Puranas.
The plot of this book revolves around the adventures of Abhaya Dhaarmaseni who is the Princess of a kingdom in western Bharatvarsha and also, Lord Krishna.
After reading the book 'Mauri', I really wanted to read other mythological fiction books written by the author. Being a fan of the mythological fiction genre, I am so glad that I got a chance to read the book 'Abhaya'. I really appreciate the author for exploring various dimensions of our Puranas and for developing interesting mythological fiction for readers to read. This book portrays a different perspective of the mythology from the point of view of a strong female protagonist.The writing style was simple and lucid. The narration style was also interesting.
Overall it was a good read. I am really looking forward to reading other books by the author.

സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പല മേഖലകളില്നിന്നുമുള്ള പന്ത്രണ്ട് വ്യക്തികളുമായി ഒരു അജ്ഞാത ദ്വീപിൽ താമസിക്കാൻ എത്തിയ ഉപലേന്ദു ചാറ്റര്ജി എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്റെയും കൂട്ടരുടെയും കഥ. വേഷവും ഭാഷയും വെടിഞ്ഞ് അറിവും പരിചയവും മറന്ന് ആദിമ ജീവിതാവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് സ്വയം പ്രവേശിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഇരുപത്തഞ്ചുവര്ഷം കഴിഞ്ഞു അവര്. സാമൂഹിക വികാസ പരിണാമത്തെ സ്വയം അറിഞ്ഞ് പഠിക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു ശ്രമമായിരുന്നു ആ ജീവിതം. പക്ഷേ കൈവിട്ടു പോയൊരു പരീക്ഷണത്തിലേക്ക് ആണ് തങ്ങൾ നടന്നു കയറിയത് എന്ന് അവർ അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല. മനുഷ്യ രാശിയിൽ മാറ്റം വരുത്തുന്ന അറിവുകൾ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച സ്ഥാനത്ത് മാനസികമായി തകർന്നു തിരികെയെത്തുന്ന മൂന്നുപേർ പിന്നെ പുത്തൻ മാറ്റത്തിന് പകരം പ്രാകൃതരീതിയിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്ന അവരുടെ അടുത്ത തലമുറകളും.

ആൽഫ' ഒറ്റവാക്കിൽ ഒരു ഉട്ടോപ്യൻ നോവൽ ആണ്. ഒരുപാട് ഉട്ടോപ്യകളെ ചുമന്നു നടക്കുന്ന ഒരുവൾക്ക് ഇത് തീർച്ചയായും ഒരു ആശ്വാസമാവേണ്ടതാണ്. പക്ഷേ, തീർത്തും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ആശയം സ്വീകരിച്ചിട്ടും, 'സുഗന്ധി' യെപ്പോലെയോ 'ഇട്ടിക്കോര' യെപ്പോലയോ സൂക്ഷ്മമായ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളോ ഏതെങ്കിലും തരത്തിലുള്ള വിശ്വസിനീയതയോ പങ്കുവെക്കാൻ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ തയ്യാറാവാത്തതു പോലെ അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. ചുരുക്കിപ്പറഞ്ഞാൽ കഥാഗതി വികസിക്കുന്നത് വളരെ തിടുക്കപ്പെട്ടാണ്. എങ്കിലും ആ പതിമൂന്ന് പേരും നമുക്കിടയിലുണ്ടാവാം. ചങ്ങലകളിൽ അതൃപ്തരായ ജ്ഞാനികളായ പ്രതിഭാശാലികളായ ആദി തേടിപ്പോവാൻ വെമ്പുന്ന മനുഷ്യർ.

The novel started off well and the first few chapters were really exciting but the momentum wasnt really kept going when the pages were turned.This happens to be a science experiment and the stuff which should have been included in the book is the stuffs and incredible things that happened inside the island during the period they stayed there.But most parts of the books talks about the history of the people and way too much of it. Could have been better if some more island experiences were included .But definitely an interesting one

നല്ല ഒരു plot ആയിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ അത് അർഹിക്കുന്ന അത്രേം വിവരണാത്മകമായി പോകാതെ ഒരു ചെറു നോവൽ ആയി ഒതുക്കി കളഞ്ഞു. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് കുറച്ചു കൂടി ആഴം നൽകി എഴുതിയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ വളരെ മികച്ച ഒരു നോവൽ ആയേനെ

Bit disappointed
I think I expected too much after reading sughandhi and ittikkora. I'm sorry but Alpha is nothing compared to those two novels.
