George Raymond Richard "R.R." Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.

Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: The Hero, sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.

In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.

As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.

In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.

Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.

Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (he was South-Central Regional Director 1977-1979, and Vice President 1996-1998), and of Writers' Guild of America, West.

The quotes in this are brilliant, but this book should never have been published. This is quite a tough one to review because of this. Indeed, it is bordering on the absurd that this in itself is actually a published edition.

It's a waste of time

The quotes in this are memorable, and as the name suggests they’re witty and wise. However, there is nothing here that you can’t get of the internet. Type “Tyrion Lannister quotes” in your search engine and you’ll find all of these. I just think it’s ridiculous that this is in print; it only takes around twenty minutes to read and the publishers have the audacity to ask for £9.99. No chance I was going to pay that, so I waited until it popped up in a discount store.

Moreover, the series is not finished yet, so surely Tyrion has some more wit and wisdom to come. Surely, he will produce more quotable material. In reality then, this is only part of his quotable material. If this was published, say five years after the series is finished (if it’s finished) then it would be a nice reminder of Westeros and I do think if this is the case then this edition, generally speaking, would have been better received.

Tyrion is not the only quotable character

Tyrion is probably the most quotable, and memorable, character from the series. But, I don’t think he deserves his own book. He is not the only quotable character from the series. There are several other characters that I think are equally as quotable because of their wittiness such as Tyrion’s brother Jamie, Edd Tollet and even Bronn in some parts. Other characters dish out some wise quotes such as Aemon Targaryen in his advice to Jon on him becoming Nightcommander of the nights watch. Ned Stark even has some wise advice for his sons. Varys also has some if the most memorable quotes of the entire series for me

Therefore, I strongly believe that this edition is a complete waste of time. What the publishers should have done when the series is finished is compile a collection of the most memorable quotes that span the books, not just the first five, and then publish them in an edition called something like: “Quotes of Ice and Fire” or “The Wit and Wisdom of Ice and Fire.” You get the idea. I only bought this book because I found it in the works reduced for two pounds. Now that is a fair price for this book.

Plenty enough fun to read.

A GAME OF WORDS

While I haven't read yet the book series of A Song of Ice and Fire, I've been watching the TV adaptation on HBO of Game of Thrones.

So, I knew that I hadn't the proper knowledge to comment about the novels but since this particular book is merely a reference work about the quotes said by the character of Tyrion Lannister.

I thought that it was quite enough of being watching the TV series to be able to read and enjoy this book.

And I was right.

Of course, I wasn't blind to see the greed behind this publication, since in a book series that it's incomplete yet, it was odd to make a quotations' book when it's evident that it's lacking of whichever quote that the character may to say on the remaining two novels to publish.

So, if this book proved to be profitable (and I am pretty sure that it will be), they will publish an "updated" version in some years in the future, so they'll get richer selling twice basically the same book. Since I haven't read the novels yet, I am not sure how popular was Tyrion Lannister between the reader fans before of the airing of the TV adaptation, and even in the beginning of the first season with known names as Sean Bean, Mark Addy and Lena Headey, I think that it was a surprise even for the producers of the TV series that the magistral perfomance of Peter Dinklage would making Tyrion Lannister as the most popular character of the entire series and a testament of that, it's the very publication of this book.

While in other sagas like Star Trek and Star Wars, they have quotations' books (I know since I have them), they aren't centered in one single character, the books contained quotes from all the characters in the franchise.

So, I guess that it's pretty evident the huge impact that Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister has made in the fans of the TV series. I am not sure how appealing would be this book to the readers fans of the original book series, but I am sure that the fans with only knowledge of the TV adaptation, this book is a very tempting option to get. The book is pretty quick to read.

I believe that it took me like half an hour, since the book only has the very quotes, there aren't any further comments or insights about the motivations or background of the character that it's a dissapointment.

The book is separated in several themes where each quote is positioned in the logical topic. I won't writing down each quote of the book, please you have no fear of that, however I thought that it can be informative that while I tell you which themes were selected for the book, to write down my favorite quote on each topic.

So, the book is separated on the following topics:

On Being a Dwarf:

All dwarfs may be bastards, yet not all bastards need be dwarfs. (A Game of Thrones)

On the Power of Words:

My mind is my weapon. My brother has a sword. King Robert has his warhammer, and I have my mind... and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if is to keep its edge. (A Game of Thrones)

On Romance;

With whores, the young ones smell much better, but the old ones know more tricks. (A Dance with Dragons)

In here, I think that the author needs to work to came up with better quotes, since Tyrion Lannister while a lustful lover, and you find several quotes about sex, he's also a very romantic person and you don't find a really good quote reflecting that side of his complicated personality.

On Family Values:

A Lannister always paid his debts. (A Game of Thrones)

On the Human Condition:

Every fool loves to hear that he's important. (A Dance with Dragons)

On Music:

Never believe anything you hear in a song. (A Storm of Swords)

On Food and Drink:

I am not fond of eating horse. Particularly my horse. (A Game of Thrones)

On Kingship:

Kings are falling like leaves this autumn. (A Storm of Swords)

On Realpolitik:

Some allies are more dangerous than enemies. (A Dance with Dragons)

The Art of War:

Men fight more fiercely for a king who shares their peril than one who hides behind his mother's skirts. (A Clash of Kings)

The Art of Saving your Skin:

I'm terrified of my enemies, so I kill them all. (A Clash of Kings)

The Art of Lying:

The Best lies are seasoned with a bit of truth. (A Dance with Dragons)

On Dragons and Other Myths:

If you want to conquer the world, you best have dragons. (A Dance with Dragons)

On Religion:

Somewhere some gods are laughing. (A Dance with Dragons)

Well, the book is interesting but it could be much better.

Still is a great option for any fan of the TV adaptation.

And certainly I hope to read the book series in the future.

If you have trouble focusing on this small and somewhat sinister fellow, find here collected probably more than you will want to recall.

Quotes ‘a plenty from G.R.R.M.’s creativity. Not particularly the thoughts that you want to use as the compass of your life.
“A man grows weary of having no lovers but his fingers.”
....and
“I have killed mothers, fathers, nephews, lovers, men and women, kings and whores. A singer once annoyed me, so I had the bastard stewed.”

I am probably not the target audience for this giftbook (soon to be re-gifted). If I need to review his “wit and wisdom” I can find it on GR or scores of other sites. The illustrations are a plus but not enough to make this a “keeper.”

'Twas funny and witty and short. I suppose it would have served well as a memorabilia for a GoT fanatic, which I'm not, so it didn't have that huge an effect on me, but yes, it was nice.

A book as little as Tyrion, it covers the most thought-provoking of the quotes by the man himself. The illustrations are funny and imaginative although weird at times. Some of my favourite quotes from the book-

"Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what's on the other side?"

"We all need to be mocked from time to time, lest we start to take ourselves too seriously."

"Never forget who you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it,and it will never be used to hurt you."

"It all goes back and back, to our mothers and fathers and theirs before them. We are puppets dancing on the strings of those who came before us, and one day our own children will take up our strings and dance in our steads."

Buying the book is an absolute waste of money. Just sitting with a highlighter next time I read a POV Tyrion chapter will do the deed. Or just reading the above few quotes will do. Or just type in the question in Quora and wait for some responses with some quotes even the publisher may have missed upon in this book.

My only cavil to GRRM, instead of frittering away precious time in compiling and capitalizing on such collectibles(it's not even a proper book) just finish writing and publish the next instalment of the ASOIAF series already.

The Wit & Wisdom of Tyrion Lannister is nothing more than Tyrion quotes copied from ASoIaF, which aren't so witty when pulled out of context.

Though the quality of the printed book itself is nice, it's a shame seeing something like this published for the sake of making quick money off one of the best fantasy series ever written, but it's a sign of how the series has been going downhill for the past few years.

The caricature doesn't even look anything like way Tyrion is described in the books (hideous with wiry black and blonde hair, one brown eye and one green), so I suppose this 5-minute "stocking-stuffer" read is geared towards fans of the inaccurate HBO show, most of which won't bother reading the real story.

But we can change that: stuff stockings with A Game of Thrones instead! The mass market paperback is cheaper and infinitely better than The Wit & Wisdom of Tyrion Lannister.

This is one little book that you can quote from day in and day out and never get tired of Tyrion Lannister's wit, wisdom, jests and japes.

Since books are what we all love, I'll leave you with this one...

The quotes themselves are great but to read them in this format was just not a very unique or interesting experience. It was just quote after quote after quote and it doesn´t seem necessary to make an actual printed book out of it. I know that is was supposed to be this but that doesn´t change the fact that you can read all these quotes online as well. However, this book will look nice on my shelf and as a die-hard Game of Thrones fan as I am it is not a shame to own it, but it really wasn´t innovative enough to rate it higher than 2 of 5 stars.

Should I rate this one stars of two. I love the Song of Ice and Fire series and the wisdom of Tyrion Lannister. I knew I was getting something short (ahem) when I bought this. I did read some reviews.
I suppose I didn’t read enough negative reviews or didn’t believe anyone would have the audacity to charge six bucks for a book with about 400 words. OK, there are a few cute good drawings of Tyrion, but not enough to call it art and not enough to charge more than $.99.

To add insult to injury some of his best quotes are missing, this is one of favorites that didn’t make the cut.

“Sorcery is the sauce fools spoon over failure to hide the flavor of their own incompetence.”
- A clash of Kings

This book has done something for me that no other book in recent memory has done. There are books that wasted my time (this took no time at all), but even when I disliked a book I saw its value. I never felt so ripped off by a book before. If I would have seen it in a store I would have read it and put it back (no one would have blinked an eye as the entire book was the same length as the inside jacket description of many books).

OK, now my review is about 75% the length of the book. Is this review good or well written? Maybe not, but at least it’s free.

Let me begin by saying that I’m a huge fan of Mr. Martin and his work and that Tyrion Lannister is one of my all time favorite literary heroes. In fact I’d dare add that I didn’t enjoy A Feast for Crows as much as I should for the simple reason that Tyrion was nowhere to be found.

However, having said that I just have to point out that in my opinion this book came out a few years too early. Since dear Tyrion is still alive and kicking I’m certain that he’d be able to grace us with many more of his witty remarks. Oh well, there’s no use complaining about something that’s already done.

Did this book make me smile? Yes it did, since it reminded me once again what is it that I like about this character. I should also say that the beautiful drawings also capture some of his persona as depicted in the TV series. But, yet again, there’s not enough material in here to keep the fans happy.

Perhaps the next book published in this vein should be The Transformations of Arya Stark, who’s not a lady but a wolf.

This book is a collection of the wittiest and the most humorous quotes of Tyrion Lannister, from The Song of Ice and Fire series. Spoilers might be ahead for those who haven’t read the books.

My favorite quotes:

A Game of Thrones

‘If a man paints a target on his chest, he should expect that sooner or later someone will lose an arrow at him.’

A Clash of Kings

‘Crowns do queer things to the heads beneath them.’

‘Sleep is good. Books are better.’

‘When you tear out a man’s tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you’re only telling the world that you fear what he might say.’

‘My nephew is not fit to sit a privy, let alone the Iron Throne.’

A Storm of Swords

‘My sister has mistaken me for a mushroom. She keeps me in the dark and feed me shit.’

A Dance with Dragons

‘I only need half my wits to be a match for you.’

‘The Gods must have been drunk when they got to me’

‘The only thing more pitiful than a dwarf without a nose is a dwarf without a nose who has no gold.’

If Tyrion Lannister were a real person, alive and well today, he probably would have smacked Martin over the head with this tiny little book from his tiny little stature and railed at him to get some sense. Just because Martin has turned into a fantasy force to be reckoned with does not mean he should just produce and publish whatever he would like.

The two stars stand because I don't necessarily HATE the collection of quotes therein, but I don't like them either. The book is down to $11 on amazon.com and is still too pricy. Although there are plenty of good quotes in the book, it falls short, no pun intended, of its main purpose. Although Tyrion certainly has some of the best quotes in the series, they are subjectively lackluster outside of their context. And what with the droll, ridiculous illustrations, this book does not deserve the praise that Tyrion surely should get.

Content yourself with reading the series of books that are out in the Song of Ice and Fire series to gather up your own set of quotes instead of throwing your money away on a book that isn't worth the time or the energy.

Yes, it's just a book of quotes said by Tyrion Lannister throughout all the ASOIAF books, but he's basically the greatest character ever and probably my spirit animal, so I had to have this. If Tyrion started a religion, this would be his bible. The illustrations are great too. One of my favorites was of King Joffrey sitting on a toilet.

There were a lot of Tyrion’s famous words in here, but it really got repetitive and I actually felt that it was missing some of his more significant words. But I guess the point of the book was of his witticisms & not so much the more serious of his lessons/words so oh well. Coulda still been better I think, Tyrion is my favorite & he’s said a lot of great stuff!

Quite a short read (pun intended).

Some quotes are, sadly, not even quotable. Some others are, without the context, quite flat when read by themselves. And once you stop 'hearing' them from Peter Dinklage in your head, the whole thing can just be washed down with some wine.

“Sleep is good. And books are better.”

I think there is no better book to start the new year with. Smart, funny, deep... Just as brilliant as Tyrion himself. 🩶 10/10.
