Well, bullshit jak hovado. Príbeh dvoch lesbičiek a vesmíru. Nával fakt dobrého sci-fi, fantasy a hororu.
I’m not a big graphic novel or comic book fan, but this one sounded interesting, and I thought I’d could use a break from more traditional reading.
It was that. It’s a collection of eighteen very short, almost vignette-like stories. Many make one point, or present one question. They provoke, and they use “strangeness” to provoke us to think about the ordinary in new ways. Some hit the mark square on, and others don’t — I suspect that’s as much a matter of who the reader is and what their sweet spots might be.
There’s work involved in reading these stories. You are switching between writing and art styles every few pages. I almost felt like I needed a short break between finishing one and starting the next — actually not a bad idea at all.
The question is, do I now want more. Probably not. These did their job, but I think I’m done.
A set of short stories with themes ranging from love, dystopian futures, and free will. A number of the stories loop on themselves, finishing quite nicely while others are little more awkward and seem to need a bit more time for their story to play out.
The art varies for each story, each having its own style, some more abstract than others but all offer vivid visuals.
Overall, a decent read to pass the time and allows a quick dip into the stories' themes.
A solid collection of a few short stories. I enjoyed most of them, though a few weren't really my thing. Few interesting concepts were explored, though quite a few seemed to lean towards space travel science fiction.
As with many anthologies, Strange Adventures is somewhat of a mixed bag. While there are a few great stories herein, sadly I found that the great was far outweighed by the poor.
Some good ideas (I picked this up because of Lemire and he never truly disappoints), but a lot of these feel underdeveloped, like they didn't know they were only going to be short stories.
Every so often, Vertigo have another go at the anthology format. Being science fiction themed, the two attempts collected here tend to feel a lot like selections of 2000AD Future Shocks - and generally not the great ones. Plus, a couple of them are trailers or tie-ins for other Vertigo books, which would generally have been much more satisfactory deployed as back-ups in the titles concerned. Still, they're also not the terrible Future Shocks; it's mostly diverting enough. And anyone who's always wanted to see Jeff Lemire's take on Ultra the Multi-Alien is going to be in clover.
I dug this collection quite a bit. I'm used to Vertigo's quarterly anthology series and this shares similar aesthetics: experimental writing, a wide variety of art and lettering styles, brief punchy tales with minimal setup and tear down. The good news here is the sci fi / horror umbrella of this collection ties things together nicely. Definitely worth a look.
