There are certain people you don’t want to cross, especially violent mob boss, Billy Murphy, Brighton’s Most Dangerous Man. When skinny student, Buster Brett, steals his cash and goes on the run, he knows that he’s just one mistake away from a very painful death. With only a stoner mate and a scheming con-artist to help him out, the odds are stacked against him.
An AMAZING book! An excellent story with some amazing twist, turns and unexpected moments. Buster Brett is the cool guy which we would all want as our mate. A story full of lovable characters- even the evil ones! Would highly recommend this book. An amazing read and set it beautiful Brighton. What’s not to love?
Story-wise this could have been a 4 star, maybe even a 5 with a few minor tweaks but ultimately I had to give at a 3 purely due to the delivery. Don’t get me wrong, it was easy to follow and it wasn’t written badly or anything, it just felt a little amateur - I would be surprised if this wasn’t the author’s first full length novel. It was just little bits, such as things being over-explained rather than written in a way where what we need to know is implied, as more experienced authors do. I also noticed a few words and phrases being used quite frequently and relatively close together, which to me again just hinted at inexperience. The story speaks for itself though - great twists and comes together nicely! I found some of the foul language and racist undertones (from some of the characters) slightly uncomfortable and that put me off a bit I think, but that is my personal taste. Definitely worth a read if you like British gangster stories, especially if you know Brighton well as it names and describes lots of places.
I struggled with this book initially as I just couldn’t like the characters. Billy Murphy was a horrible, violent, foul mouthed man. But after page 150 he was less prolific and the story centred on Buster Brett and his gang. It was a good story if a little naive but worth a read if you know Brighton. Definitely a blokes book though
