Jefferson Nighthawk is cloned in order to hunt down a revolutionary leader and bring back the daughter he kidnapped. Nighthawk is a half step removed from being a superhero, being that he is so much better at killing than anyone else past or present. The priority of this Nighthawk is to all Jefferson Nighthawks. The original is frozen with an incurable [at the time being] disease and his money for stasis is running out, meaning the clone is motivated to fulfill the mission in order to receive the money for it. There was a prior clone that had a mission and died. First stop is to avenge his death. This introduces us to the mentality and some of the capabilities of Nighthawk. It is then on to the main mission.
Fast fun read. A lot of witty banter. Some LOLs (“…I’m a troubleshooter.” “Trouble walks in and you shoot it?”). At times it gets close to turning from witty banter to cringeworthy behavior. Really good action packed adventure with humor. 4.5 stars. This can be read standalone. I read the third one first, that was fine. It was a complete story without giving away spoilers or needing background.
This one picks up years after The Widowmaker left off. Once again, inflation makes it necessary to clone The Widowmaker. This time, the cloned Jefferson Nighthawk has all of the Widowmaker's memories, making him quite a formidable bounty hunter. He gets involved in a revolution and the killing commences.
Like the first Widowmaker book, this one raises questions about identity. This iteration of Jefferson Nighthawk wonders about souls and things of that nature while he goes about his bloody business. The ending is much more open than the ending of the previous one, setting up Gathering of Widowmakers down the road.
Not much to say with this one. Boring round-about dialogue and one-dimensional characters and a plot with a dissatisfying ending. Finished it through sheer force of will Copy paste for the first book in the series
Three and a half stars rounded up to four. Popcorn science fiction with a Gary Stu. Cloned with all the knowledge of the galaxy's most feared killer, Jefferson Nighthawk is reborn and tasked with rescuing a politician's daughter, only to find himself entangled in a plot where the daughter offers a fortune for her father's death. It's a fast easy read, and makes a good change of pace from more serious books. There is enough given at the beginning of the book, so that you don't need to read the first one first.
Totally dialog driven character based fluff. In fact, if you took out all the dialog it would probably be a short story or a novelette. Some of the characters are annoying. There's far too much 'spaining going on (part of the reason why some of the annoying characters are there). I doubt I'll bother to read any more in the series.
This is shaping up to be a nice little sci-fi trilogy. It's heavy on action and plot. The character was also a lot more appealing on this second novel. I was surprised that it could be effectively done since the main character is only sort of the same as that in the last story -- a clone, but what binds them together is a set of skills and a common situation, and it turned out to be plenty for continuity.
2017: I'm enjoying this series way more the second time... probably because of reading it with the kids. I'm starting to suspect that the kids may think that Resnick is the greatest sci fi author ever. While this is WRONG and they've been exposed to enough Heinlein to know that, I'm still tickled that they're picking up books by Resnick that I haven't even read and reading him. He is frightful good.
Resnick's four volumes that feature Jefferson Nighthawk, the Widowmaker, are entertaining books set in his excellent future history series. They don't have quite the exciting quality of the first Santiago novel, but are fun page-turners. His ability to tell stories of larger-than-life future myth is unparalleled, and the way the plots progress and the characters develop is fascinating. They're very enjoyable science fiction.
