Sheltering Sky #1

Flight Of Fancy

Rate this book
In the time after the meteors brushed past Earth, a host of deadly new diseases sprang into being. Mankind rushed to find vaccines, cures, and even ways to manipulate human DNA to enable humankind to better fight off the onslaught of new diseases. Failing on all counts, a handful of intrepid scientists sought instead to find ways to alter man enough to survive in the brave new world he would inevitably find himself part of.

The scientists succeeded only in creating a far worse disease, one mockingly called Ravineux for the near insatiable bloodlust it created in the initial stages… the Ravineux virus cemented a terrible change altering all it affected forever from homo sapiens to homo avius or homo vorax. The Ravineux, as those of the homo vorax species came to be called, spread over the face of the earth like a plague, until the remaining humans were few and far between… and the only hope for human kind’s survival lay not with the humans, but with the Flyers or homo Avius…
This is the story of a young man who did not know he could fly, and of the man who taught him to soar before he had wings.

I’ve been in love with words since before I drew breath, and I don’t see that ever changing. I write stories. Sometimes I write music with them, sometimes they’re poems, and lately, to my great delight, M/M erotic romance.
Yum.
Smexy man to the second…or third power…now that’s the kinda math I can get behind!!
The hair curls or frizzes as it will, the eyes are green and tend to look in two different directions—no, really—and the rest is subject to change. You know the guy who didn’t know if he was a butterfly dreaming he was a man or a man dreaming he was a butterfly? Yeah, that’s me, but substitute drag queen for butterfly and wacky, wild ex-Army chick for man.

Unfortunately this book is not for me... But it's a freebie, maybe you should try it too.

My reasons for the 2 stars ratings are:
*I didn't liked the writing. It confuses me. But my English sucks! Maybe it's just me.... I was frustrating adding commas or paragraphs separations while reading because for me it should be there! Some paragraphs would not have neither one comma. Comma are our friends... Let's use them!
*I don't like protagonists with a "boyish" voice. NO! CAM IS NOT A CHILD, he is an adult, but... With such childish voice it freak me out. He keep calling his gramfather Pa-paw Tolly, for example and damn... Each time I would mentally delet it from my mind because it's hard to imagine a 18 years old guy saying it. BUT it's a different Earth! Humankind is scared because monsters that eat human flesh is around... Cam can have this "boyish" voice because he is always scared.... But... Hummmm.... No, didn't work for me.
*Unfortunately I didn't like all the Alpha aura about Seth. I didn't saw him like an "Alpha" at all. Sorry... But it's true. Don't tell me he is an Alpha, show me he is an Alpha. But this story is too short and I didn't had the time to see it...
*That's another problem I had. The story is too short and I didn't had the time to think about all the information I got. It's a very interesting world! Very original and I loved it! But I didn't like how it was shown to me :(
Too much hurry to tell everything, and I keep freaking out when Cam was the narrator because he sounds soooooo childish!
*Two characters appear out of nowhere and was sort of left there, without any explanation of what they were doing and why they were in the plot... And BTW, wow... Seth was a fucking bastard letting one of them be savagely beat!

Hummm
So I'm glad it was a freebie! Thank you author, for giving this story away! But hummm... No, it's not for me, and I will not go on reading this series (the story didn't end... For more explanation readers will have to go on reading more of this series)

In a post-apocalyptic world where mankind has been inalterably changed, Cam leaves his home to find the elixir that will allow his change into homo avius, a man with wings, so that he might spread stories across the world. But scientists' darkest accident, the cruel and cannibalistic Ravineux stand in Cam's way. The world is not entirely without friendly company, though. As Cam meets a strange hunter, he finds himself inexorably attracted to the man. Seth, pleasure giver of his people, is entranced by this young man who would give himself so easily. With the belief that Cam is his mate, he goes forth to rescue him from mortal danger and help him find the elixir so he might become his true form and fly at last.

I loved Flight of Fancy. In a short time, this book built a rich and exciting world which I felt fully immersed in. I couldn't believe how much action, world-building and romance was present in this story. It was a real page-turner for me. Noel makes use of every word to enrich world-building, character development or plot and the book never plods.

I really believed that Camden and Seth were a loving couple and was rooting for them the whole way. The Ravineux were quite the wicked, inhumane villains and really felt like a real threat to the couple's safety. I was pretty much glued to this story from beginning to end and I can't wait to read more from this fresh and unique universe.

If I had any complaints about this book, it would be editing. There were several mistakes that could be weeded out with a bit more attention. In addition, the sex scenes delved into purple prose a few times. I don't particularly find phrases like "throbbing man parts" to be attractive.

Flight of Fancy is a free read and I wholeheartedly recommend it. This isn't a free story that feels like a rejected leftover. This book is a great setup for a world that I can't wait to dip into again, hopefully with a full-size novel.

****Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance®****

Flight of Fancy was an interesting introduction to a unique dystopian world. However, I felt the story seemed a bit rushed. I would have liked to see more of the ideas fleshed out and explained as well as Camden and Seth’s relationship have more depth to it.

There are a lot of things left unexplained, such as how people have lost so much knowledge and yet formed whole other cultures in just a generation. I think there was so much potential here, and if I just sat back and took everything at face value, it was entertaining in the way many vampire/post apocalyptic blockbuster movies are.

I hope future installments of the series sheds more light on the world and have more depth.

Set in a post-apocalyptic dystopic world, this novella is action packed and full of suspense. Nothing in this tale is conventional or typical. I sure hope the sequel is coming soon. I'm dying to read more about Camden and Seth. AND I love it more because it's free :)

I enjoyed reading this book but would have wanted to get a little more explanation about how the change of the world had happened.
