This companion book to all five seasons of AMC's explosive drama Breaking Bad highlights the memorable quotes and images chronicling a former chemistry teacher's downward spiral into a life of crime after cooking up the world's purest methamphetamine.
This book is a sort of summary of the popular television series "Breaking Bad." "Breaking Bad" is the story of an overqualified high school chemistry teacher, Walter White, who is diagnosed with lung cancer. Walt does not wish to leave his family in debt from his medical bills. He also wants them to have money after he has passed on. Not knowing how to make fast cash, he turns to his former student, Jesse. The two team up and begin selling the most popular and chemically pure meth anyone has ever seen. Throughout this book, we see quotes and images from the series. I personally enjoyed this short read. It made me unbelievably happy to recap some of the most popular moments and phrases from the series.
There isn't really any characterization in this book, but there is in the show. Throughout the series, every character develops. Every reoccurring character is dynamic. The most obvious change in character is Walt. He foreshadowed to his change, saying chemistry is the study of transformation, more specifically growth, decay and transformation. Walt grows in the meth business, becoming the best cook there has ever been. He eventually makes more money than anyone would know what to do. As time passes, Walt decays. He has crossed people he should not have. He takes matters into his own hands. His family turns on him. He has no one, so he leaves. He eventually realizes what he must do. He makes peace and ties up loose ends. He transforms into who he wants to be.
This series takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico at various locations. It is also set in modern time.
A reoccurring theme allowed characters to choose their own fates by how they acted. This theme is the theme of loyalty/betrayal. By Walt betraying Gus, he almost lost his king status. Skylar betraying Walt revealed Walt’s secret. By Jesse betraying Walt, he lost everything that ever mattered to him.
I would only recommend this book to those that have seen the entire series, as it contains spoilers. I will hand this book off to a few members of my family.
A collection of quotes from the show, but some are pointless and not that great. Besides, one of the greatest quotes was left out of this book: "I took a half measure, when I should have gone all the way. No more half measures, Walter." -Mike Ehrmantraut
I found this book in a Little Free Library. As a companion book to the TV show, it is filled with stills from the show and quotes from the characters but to be honest I found most of the quotes a bit lack-luster and boring.
For some reason I had the mistaken impression that it was going to be a coffee table book, i.e., the perfect thing to ask my wife for my birthday, but Breaking Bad: I Am The Danger turns out to be more of an expensive stocking stuffer. It's really the sort of gift "book" they keep next to the register with those pocket-sized collections of Zen proverbs or blank books or LOLCat photos.
Breaking Bad: I Am The Danger is nothing more than a series of quotations -- some meaningful, most not, and all findable on IMDB or any Breaking Bad wiki -- combined with a photo of the character. That's it. No behind-the-scenes photos (I think there's one of Aaron Paul looking at the camera), no interviews, no insights from the writing team, nothing. Most of the time the quotations aren't even paired with the scene in which they were said. The famous "I am the danger" speech is sadly abbreviated; there are unofficial T-shirts out there that reproduce the whole thing.
So why the three stars, instead of just one? Out of goodwill, I guess, though this publication really tested mine. Like many people -- regular viewers like me and television critics alike -- we thrilled to the plot twists and applauded the depth and complexity of the acting and writing; Breaking Bad will surely remain in my Top 5 Television list of all time, and shoddy cash-ins like these won't mar that.
Walter H. White is a chemistry genius, but works as a chemistry teacher in an Albequerque, New Mexico high school. His life drastically changes when he's diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, and given a short amount of time left to live. A mere matter of months. To ensure his handicapped son of 16 years of agen and his pregnant wife of 7 months have a financial future, Walt uses his chemistry background to create and sell the world's finest crystal methamphetamine. To sell his signature "blue meth," he teams up with Jesse Pinkman, a former student of his. The meth makes them very rich very quickly, but it attracts the attention of his DEA brother in law Hank. As Walt and Jesse's status in the drug world escalates, Walt becomes a dangerous criminal and Jesse becomes a hot-headed salesman. Hank is always hot on his tail, and it forces Walt to come up with new ways to cover his tracks. It all ends up with a shootout and walter ends up with a gun shoot wound to the lower left side rib. walter bleeds to death and and drops dead before the police arrive to the scene, mean while jesse pinkman escapes with liberty freedom and money.
I loved the TV series, but was disappointed by the book. I expected an official companion book to the entire TV series detailing characters and episodes, etc. Instead it is more of a little stocking stuffer sized book of short character quotes from throughout the series and not entirely in chronological order. The photos don't always match the quotes either. It's okay, but don't expect much more than a little picture book with short quotes from the series because that is exactly what it is and nothing else.
Speravo in qualcosa di meglio visto che finora è l'unico libro ufficiale uscito... Le foto sono belle e le frasi anche... però spero che questo telefilm-capolavoro avrà presto un companion migliore! Tempo di lettura: 5 minuti.
I was hoping for something better because so far it's the only official book out... The pictures are beautiful and the quotes also... but I hope that this show-masterpiece will soon have a better companion! Read it in 5 minutes.
Okay, so it's really five stars for the show. (It's probably a two star book on its own.) I loved the show and feel it's one of the best written shows of the past few years. Not one dud of an episode and wonderfully complex and interesting characters. So, overall, a nice picture book for a wonderful show.
An awesome look back at some of the epic quotes of this amazing series. I really enjoyed reading this book. My only complaint it that the quotes were not in chronological order. Other than that small issue, I loved it!
I liked it. I just finished watching the show last night. The quotes in the book reminded me of all the best scenes in the show. I kind of want to start the show all over again...;)
