An unexpected ending to a pretty creepy story.
Marla and her (new) boyfriend travel back to her home town when she is informed her sister has been murdered.
Several years before Marla had been brutally gang raped and left for dead by three local boys. They were never charged.
A note was left with Marla's sister's body mentioning her (Marla) and welcoming her home. Others notes are left with subsequent dead girls, so somehow Marla is in the middle of these murders.
She is thinking it MAY be the boys who raped her luring her back to town to finish the job or is there someone else?
I was surprised at what happened in the end, and did shed a tear.
Mr Chambers was able to pack a lot into a short novel. I actually listened to the audio and it was only 5 hours. Very well done

Okay, so, I can only start this with one word… WOW!
Let me start by telling you two things about me, first, this isn’t my normal genre, second I am admittedly a little gender bias in my normal reading material (hopefully you guys don’t throw stuff at me now. lol) From what I’ve read in the past I haven’t been able to connect with a lot of male authors work. Michael Chambers changed that for me! This book was fast paced and intriguing from the first page.
I started this book at 10pm on the 29th of July, went to bed an hour later—my husband practically had to drag me—I woke up at 7AM just to have time to read before going school clothes shopping with my kids—eight hours later I had my nose right back in my kindle. I finished it at 10 pm that night. Yes, I am serious, I was that hooked.
There aren’t enough good things that I can say about this book so I won’t make this THAT long, instead I want to highlight my favorite qualities.
First- Marla, our lead in this book, Chambers did a phenomenal job writing in a womans POV, she was relatable, funny, and strong. Too often I find myself irritated by the “perfect woman” who everyone is gaga over, and happens to be so badass no one will cross her, that’s become almost as bad of a cliché as the “love triangles”. Chambers did not do that, Marla isn’t some super woman, she has weakness’, not just insecurities, we see her vulnerable—but never whiney—and then we see her kick some ass, not because she’s just a badass that no one messes with, but because she has to!
The book was such a breath of fresh air when I was basically suffocating on clichés, now, don’t get me wrong, I love clichés as much as the next girl, it just seems to be too much lately.
Not to mention it wasn’t just Marla who jumped off the page to you, every single character he wrote was three-dimensional. There were no “down” moments where you were skipping ahead, and I honestly pride myself on always—in movies or books—on knowing who-done-it long before it’s revealed. SO. NOT. THE. CASE. My ego was damaged because it came out of the left field for me when it was revealed. Now let me go all fangirl here and scream OMG!
In short (lol), I laughed, I cried (kind of a lot), I cheered, this book has it all, it really does, even some romance, I am generally a short and to the point type of reviewer, but this warranted every single word. Now, please, stop reading this review and go get this book, and keep your eyes on Michaels Chambers because I have a feeling he’s got a lot more in store for us!

What a great read!

From the beginning page, we're thrust into a front-row seat to some of the most horrific events of our protagonist's life. What follows is a roller-coaster of ups and downs, spiced with just a hint of romantic interest to balance the terrible events that befall our herione.

Once again, Michael Chambers presents us with what seems to be his no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners attitude to storytelling. I picked this up after reading the author's first novel and a short story collection, and all I can say is I'm off to look for more from this author!

There is some sexual activity in this book, so it may not be suitable for younger readers. But, that being said, don't go into Sisters looking for hot, steamy, romance-novel sex; what the author gives us is far more charming, awkward, and utterly real.

The heroine, Marla, is deeply, wonderfully flawed and neurotic. Marla reads and feels like a real person. Despite the obvious temptation to make her a talented amateur sleuth, she ends up feeling like most people would--completely out of her element. Her sidekick/love interest, Scott, is manly and tough without being a one-dimensional caricature of the standard ex-soldier tough-guy (for instance, rather than one more in a seemingly endless parade of "Special Forces" types, Scott was an MP.)

The action scenes are fast-paced and real-life accurate, without being overly technical. One gets the feeling that the author knows his way around both firearms and their use, or at least does incredible diligence in research.

A final note: There is a pretty intense flashback to a sexual assault. I won't lie; it made me very uncomfortable to read, and I almost skipped it. I'm glad I stuck it out; the author shows us later why we needed to go through that with the character, and in the end the entire scene is justified, at least in my opinion.

Overall, a well-deserved 5 stars for Sisters.
