I don't quite know how to describe this book. It's a fantasy, with some magic thrown in, a smattering of intrigue, deceit, attraction and love. Monsoon Reign is has dark sexual content and is for mature audiences.

Fayodale is a mystical place, ruled by a King, supported by religious fanatics, and populated by barren women. Families pay tribute to the Goddess who gift them with children - not born of their womb, but are plucked from a pool of water and adopted into the family. Katharis lives in this society, and by nefarious design, is wed to Duke Nicholai. Seeking to escape her loveless marriage, she escapes for one brief moment - and in that moment, finds the man who shows her what love feels like. The kingdom is thrown into turmoil when the Katharis is found to be with child, and the plans of her husband are revealed. She is but a dispensable pawn in his strategy, and she must now find a way to protect herself and her child.

Katharis starts off as a weak willed woman, unable to stand up for herself, defenseless and alone. Once her maternal instincts kicks in, she finds her voice and her conviction. There is no fiercer animal in earth than a mother protecting her young. I liked her loyalty to her friends, and how she tries to make their lives better.

What I could not appreciate was how naive she was to the duplicity of her husband. As a victim of his physical and sexual abuse, and her realization that her husband has malevolence in his heart, I would have expected that she would wizen up and realize that her life and that of her child are in danger. It was almost too late when she realizes this.

Unfortunately, technically, the story leaves much to be desired. The words used and how they were used made parts of the story difficult to follow, and did not make me feel immersed in the story. It felt that the author tried hard to bring her story to a more elevated level, by using words or sentence phrasing that could have been much simpler and more understandable to the reader. Unfortunately grammatical and spelling errors, hanging sentences and incomplete thoughts made it a also hard to read the story cleanly and clearly. I had to re-read some paragraphs several times to understand what the author was trying to impart.

I would have loved to see the plot points addressed more completely, and the rationale of why and how developed more deeply with as the story progressed.

The end of the book left me at a loss, as it felt unfinished. I believe the intent of the author is to continue the story and create a series of books. Unfortunately, the end of book one left me hanging as there were a number of plot points left unresolved.

This book is a good effort for this first time author, and a more polished work would have resulted with better editing, better pacing, more character development and better pacing. I am hopeful that book two will address all the plot points left unaddressed in book one.

I was planning on taking my time reading this book. Well that totally didn't happen, once I started I just couldn't put it down. I just couldn't pull myself away from Kathair and what she was going through, I needed to know what was going to happen to her, and before I knew it the book was over.

I'm not exactly sure how to describe this book. Sure there was the mystery of Kathair's dreams and where exactly she came from, or how exactly Fayodale came to be but that isn't what kept me reading. Sure I was interested in finding these things out, but Kathairs character and the struggles she has is what keep me drawn in until the very end. To live the way she had to and to still be able to stand up for herself made her pretty amazing.

The book is told from different point of views, and this is done pretty well. You get inside the minds of all the important characters and it gives you a good idea of what exactly is going on. It gives you the opportunity to really get to know the people that surround Kathairs and how they either supported her or hindered her with all her struggles.

I'm pretty interested in knowing what exactly happened to the "old world" and how Fayodale came to be, which I'm sure is something that will be focused on more in the books to come. I also liked the magic used and it seemed realist the way things progressed with Kathairs training in it.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was the passage of time. There is really no warning as to when months or years will pass by and it would jar me out of the book when this would happen. It would have been a good idea to think of a way to date the chapters so that the reader is aware ahead of time when a long passage of time would happen.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, it has a very post apocalyptic feel to it, so if you are into books like that you will enjoy this book a lot.

Okay, so it was very difficult to rate this book.

During a phone reboot, my e copy was deleted and along with that the notes I made for this book. Unfortunately, I can only remember the things I did not like. For the sake of an honest review, and a reason as to why I give it 3 stars, I will try to remember some of the good things.

This story was a change in pace for me, so I automatically wanted to read it. The story was really dark fantasy and I hadn't read anything in that genre yet, so I glad to say that this story was my first. The story line was promisingly dark and even paced. Kathair's back-story was good, as far as how she came to be and how her husband planned to use her.

The husband, though an abusive jerk, was a true villain. He had his reason fro everything, though they weren't the nicest. For that, I felt that he was a true character who served his purpose. He was also the reason I cringed at this book; he was horrible to Kat

I didn't really like the characters. I know for a lot of people, if they don't like the characters why bother reading? Well, the characters weren't necessarily unlikable as much as they were just meh. They all seemed to have hidden motives.

The FMC Kathair (which I on't think is her name but in my version, that's how it was spelled) was shy and timid with her new husband who , but she was always sexually aroused when she got around the Priest dude (Goodness, I cannot remember his name!). And this arousal turned on immediately. Also, this Priest guy has fallen in love with her out of nowhere and to read about his attraction to her an his dislike for her husband got on my nerves. Still, I never believed he loved her, I thought he was just jealous.

The whole Goddess and baby thing was confusing. And where the magic came in at was also confusing. The only parts I really understood were the parts where people were having conversations. Once it got to expositiony stuff, everything went right over my head.

I also did not like the jumping around POV. There were too many. I kinda think that if there was a need for other POV's then maybe the primary POV shouldn't have been Kat's. Maybe it should have been the Priest guy since he had ulterior motives to be around both Kat and her husband and the other people of the story.

I will most likely be re-reading this book some time in the future to see if I can better understand the politics of it all. And if there is a sequel, I'll read it too.

Ms. Fettig has created a world of the future in which the behaviours and mores of the past seem to be prevalent. There is magic, power, corruption, evil and, of course the ever-present good.

The exploits of Kathair and her companions are well portrayed. The feelings generated in the reader for the protagonists and for the antagonists are well defined and strong. The author draws the reader through the pages, wanting to know what will happen next.

This is a story of lust for power, evil vs. good, and love. At the end of the book I was left wanting to read more of the exploits of Kathair. I hope there will be a second novel to follow.

There are some simple proofreading errors throughout the text, but they do not detract from the story.

I recommend Monsoon Reign to anyone who wishes to remove themselves from their everyday lives and be transported into a realm of fantasy.

*THIS IS A GOODREADS FIRST READS BOOK THAT I WON*

I have no clue how to describe this book. No matter, it was a page turner. I couldn't put the darn thing down!

I would describe this book as a futuristic fantasy. The author never actually states what year this story takes place, which annoyed me just a tad for some reason.

I fell in love with most of the characters, especially Kathair. Although, she did stand for abuse from her husband for way too long, when her maternal instincts kicked in, she was a bad ass!

The book is filled with love, lies, wickedness, sex and magic. This book is completely different from anything I have ever read. I truly enjoyed it and I highly recommend it.

This book has some fascinating characters but I was most intrigued by Kathairs. She was the most genuine and relatable person I think. Given the pretext, the author did a great job keeping all the characters believable. The writing style is fresh and keeps things interesting. The jumping passage of time I didn't mind as it was still a very connected story. Overall it was very entertaining and I recommend it.

I won this book on a goodreads giveaway. First of all thank you R.C Fettig for wrapping up the book. It looked so pretty and definitely made my day! I also loved the art on the front cover.

Now to the review. This story was a fast paced entertaining read but the characters somewhat lacked depth and the sentence structure was a bit awkward. The story was very creative, it would have greatly improved if it was longer and if the characters were more complex.

I believe the lead character Kathair was a strong character from the beginning. Some people say that she took awhile to stand up for herself against her husband but I disagree. She did stand up for herself and her child several times before she left him. I know from experience what domestic abuse is like. Like many women in her situation, Kathair may not have thought she had a choice.

Prudence was also a great supporting character. I wish her romance with Silvo and her tragic death was explored more before the book ended. Some back story on Prudence before she worked at the theatre would have been an improvement too.

I'm not sure if the author intends to continue this as a series but if she does I will read the next. I am curious about this world she created and what is outside of Fayodale.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

Let me start off by saying I REALLY liked this book. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn’t for a few typos and the section of the book where the passage of time didn’t really flow for me.

I really like the lead character Kathair, and one of my favorite sayings is, “the most dangerous place to be is between a mother and her child,” this book is the perfect example of that.

After mysteriously appearing in the town of Fayodale without any memories, Kathair is forced to marry a duke. Her husband becomes king after a war, is very abusive towards her, and will let nothing stop him in his need for power.

When Kathair gets pregnant, her husband is thrilled as it is the first pregnancy in Fayodale in many years. After she gives birth, questions begin to circulate about the paternity of her son and the king threatens to not only kill her but her son as well.
