I liked the story in this manga quite well and it was also quite dark. After all, it begins with a character dying. It's also stretched out, not as if I hadn't noticed. The whole concept that self-defense is a thing doesn't exist in Japan, apparently. I liked the drawing style again.
Makino Aoi is one of the best authors I've read when it comes to themes around bullying. Most of her works include this theme in one way or another and its both plot and the expressive art that deliver the anguish and hopelessness that comes with it. But more than that, she also looks into what drives bullies and what allows bullies, such as passive viewers, to thrive. If Sekai no Hate were purely a story around bullying, this would be an easy 5-star series. That being said, Makino adds a murder mystery into the mix which, while not badly told, takes away some of the believability.
Main characters Chida and Ryu are both victims of bullying in their own right. An escalation between the two and their tormentor leads to the latter falling to his death. It's an accident, but Chida and Ryu are terrified of being found guilty for murder so they do all in their power to hide the truth, even dragging others down with them. While it can't be said that bullying can't lead to murder, the way it is handled in this book feels a little awkward in this time and age. The police seems minimally involved and suspects get away too easily. In a more historic or perhaps fantasy setting, I could see this happening. But in a contemporary non-fantasy work, I would expect more police involvement, forensics, interrogations, and not simply taking characters by their word.
Although I have to ignore some of my disbelief in regards to how the death is handled by authorities, I do think it is a well laid out story that keeps you wanting to know how it continues. Chida and Ryu make mistakes along the way but they are largely the biggest victim in all of this. You can't help but feel for them and wish that the nightmare they've gotten themselves in would end. The ending was a bit rushed but I was generally satisfied with how things turned out. One might have hoped for something else, but it made sense.
In Sekai no Hate 3, Teppei’s death gets investigated more, and we learn some of his backstory. The story still deals with serious subjects, this time it’s beauty standards, but we also get some typical high school struggles. It was so terrible how Azusa . Besides this, the train metaphors were great, and the art style is cute as always, just like the bonus chapter.
Sekai no Hate ➳ Rating for the whole series: 3.6 stars
Ich brauchte 10 Tage um diesen Band zu lesen. Was stimmt nicht hier. Ich glaube, dass das Thema hoch interessant ist aber die Autorin kann nicht es richtig darstellen. Das ist sehr Schade, weil die Zeichnungen wunderschön sind.
