She has an unwanted destiny. He is the commander of her heart. Together, they must survive a forgotten world full of unimaginable truths.
Earth. It’s a myth; a distorted story filtered down through the generations. But how much of the ancient myth is fundamentally true?
The uncertainty of their latest mission has left Eden’s nightmares spiralling out of control. They’re on a mission like no other, one Rooke, Eden’s commander, accepted without hesitation. But Eden would follow Rooke to the ends of the universe. He’s her best friend; her rock; the man she’s been secretly in love with for years.
When their search for a missing scouting ship finds them stranded on the world they believed to be a myth, they soon discover the horrifying reason why humans left thousands of years ago.
Faced with the strain of being trapped on an ancient world, with mystery and primal danger greeting them at every turn, Rooke is forced to make some risky decisions. But how much pressure can Eden, Rooke, and the rest of the crew endure as they desperately seek a way home?
Huge lover of fantasy, sci-fi and all things romance.
I’ve been writing novels since I was sixteen, however, it’s taken me a long time (25 years in fact) to find the courage to publish. But life is too short!
I began my author life writing historical romances, but over the years I’ve swayed towards sci-fi and fantasy, mixed with romance. I think you’ll find I’m a desperate romantic at heart. (Shhh, don’t tell my husband).
𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐛 When Eden Falls follows Eden, second-in-command on the spaceship. The crew is on a mission to investigate a strange signal they picked up and when they find themselves stranded on a world they believed to be a myth, they are faced with ancient mystery and primal dangers. Now, they must find a way to get back home…
𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 Okay! What a remarkable debut book!👏🏼
To start with, I loved the world-building.. it was amazing and my excitement level was too much to handle, reading about a dystopian world, space and space colonies, and humans living on a different planet🤩
Ohh and the descriptions were just beautiful, made me so excited😍 and blissful reading the beauty of the planet they ended up stranded!
With a fast-paced and captivating plot, this book gave some terrifying and mysterious moments pretty soon. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫🤯 attached to the terrifying alien monsters was amazing.. gave my horror-lover heart, a satisfaction.
But the most interesting part was the shift in the narration that happened next (not going to spoil). it’s like, there were layers and layers to the plot, diving deeper into the dystopian world! Again, I really enjoyed the world-building, soo well-done👍🏼
The romance, on the other hand, was not satisfying at all😩 and it has like a love-triangle or maybe not? I’m not sure and I don’t really know who to ship because both the MMC’s have their ups and down.. both the couples had their moments, some sweet, some not-so-sweet!
Also, the cultural differences shown, makes sense for the dystopian society, but.. was it frustrating😅 However, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞, 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 but a bit heartbreaking too.. The monsters need more time as they bring such excitement to the plot..
Plus the cliffhanger😱 now I cannot wait for book 2, coz how's that possible!
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 Overall, an incredibly fast-paced book that’s set up in a dystopian world and gives us some very horrifying yet exciting moments. With an amazing world-building, action-packed plot and a captivating love-triangle (not-so-much), this ends up with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger..
So I received this book as an ARC read just last night. I wasn’t planning to start it until the weekend, but my curious mind got the better of me so I thought … one chapter, and then it’s time for bed.
Fast forward to current moment in time and I’ve just finished the entire book.
Safe to say, I could not put it down! When Eden Falls is an absolutely amazing and beautifully written novel. Each chapter left me wanting more and more! Everything about this book was well executed. The world building is INCREDIBLE to the point where I actually felt as though I was there.
The book is phenomenal. Each character is well written and wonderfully described. I absolutely adore the protagonist, Eden and I felt connected to her from the get go!
A fantastic debut novel! And I am so excited for the second book !!
I enjoyed every page of this sci-fi/fantasy novel. It’s self-published (last summer), and the first in a series. Rarely am I able to sink into a story so quickly, but author Alana Faye Wilson drew me in with great writing, excellent character building, and a perfect pace that assures readers they want to find out what happens next.
There’s a romantic facet of the story that does not distract from the plot as a whole—the main character is in love with her team’s commander, but he doesn’t know. It turns into somewhat of a love triangle, but by then we’re on another planet where different social rules confuse the characters as much as us regular-human readers, and things (including romance) never feel crystal clear—but in a good way.
The end of the story is not an actual end. The sequel has just been published, and you’re going to want to get it in order to find out what happens to the main characters, who are literally in the middle of something big and scary, when When Eden Falls ends.
I received an ARC of When Eden Falls, and it was a great read! What a cool debut novel.
Set 3,000 years in the future, humans are now inhabiting a planet outside of the original solar system. Earth is considered a myth. But when a retrieval crew is tasked with finding a lost ship, it's quickly revealed that Earth is, in fact, real - and it's still inhabited.
The main cast of characters becomes stranded on Earth as well and must place their trust in the hands of a distant human species. It's a risky decision, but is it one that pays off???
When Eden Falls is a perfect sci-fi novel for sci-fi lovers and sci-fi newcomers alike. Wilson writes in an easy to read style that is less daunting than some other more intense sci-fi books, making it more accessible to the casual reader. But, by no means does this categorize the writing as bland! The description in When Eden Falls appeals to all the senses. I was entranced by Wilson's vivd world building and read nearly 70% of the book in one sitting - which is rare for me! It was easy to imagine all of the sights, sounds, feelings, smells, and even tastes throughout the duration of the book.
Another highlight was the fast pacing. The concise style of writing added to the feeling of adrenaline and anxiety that you get as the characters experience this new world before them. Regardless of some time skipping on some chapters, nothing felt rushed. If anything, the only rush would come from the desire to know what happens next, as When Eden Falls leaves off on a wide open cliffhanger.
Though I truly enjoyed this book, there was one aspect of it that fell flat for me, and that was the romantic plot. I didn't really feel drawn to either romantic interest as I felt both of them were somewhat superficial and didn't have much depth - and when they did, it read as arrogance. I think overall, the romance was a bit stiff and out of place at times. I think When Eden Falls could've been COMPLETELY devoid of any romantic plot and it would've been better for me (and that comes from a self-proclaimed romantasy fan).
Regardless, do yourself a favor and buy yourself a copy when it comes out. You won't regret it.
Wow. Where do I start? This book is so well written. The descriptions, pacing, dialogue are excellent. The characters fully fleshed and realistic. The relationship development was believable. The world building is simple yet more than adequate. The monsters are compelling and terrifying. For two days I was literally transported to a future earth and loved being there among its people.
Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of alien races and inter-species romantic tension. I didn't quite know that's what I would be getting when I signed up for an advanced copy. But it was all so well done.
Eden and Rooke. Absolute favorites. From the moment Rooke was introduced he was so likeable and understandably flawed. My only let down is that he and Eden didn't get as much page time together as I had hoped. There's a third person who adds to the romantic tension and not in a bad "love-triangle" sort of way. Eden is not the least bit conflicted in her feelings and the third party's interest in her adds to the story in a way I haven't experienced before.
Eden was an superb POV character. She's so easy to love and great with her comrades. All of the characters are consistent and form a well-knit crew with their ups and downs and banter. They feel like family and Wilson juggled them all so well. Plus, the dialogue is immersive and when it's coming from Rooke or Dybgo...oh, so sweet.
There's an excellent theme square in the middle of this book highlighting the differences in the two cultures' treatment of women and the reasons why. Males of the alternate species go into a "rut" periodically, losing control of themselves around females in heat. To prevent nonconsensual intercourse, their society enforces chaperoning, secluding their females for protection to ensure the survival of their species. This creates a mix of medieval chivalry and female-sacredness-honoring, in which females are so honored and elevated that they loose some freedom within the society. My favorite part of how this theme played out was when the love-interests, under the influence of an aphrodisiacal drink at a "mate-selection" ball, were about to go too far and the man exercised self-control and stopped himself. It really highlighted something special in the subtle comparison of the two cultures and their relationship with their women.
The political intrigue is perplexing. I feel for and adore the other people and want to trust them. It's so hard to discern their true intentions, but Wilson glazes all the layers together so beautifully. As much as I like Dybgo, I'm rooting for Eden and Rooke all the way. The ending gutted me and I am usually a really hard one to sell a series to but I must have the sequel to this!
Alana Faye Wilson, you have entered the world of Sci-fi books with a bang!
This book was everything I loved and so much more! It might be a bit on the shorter side for sci-fi but everything that is important to this story has been incorporated. The world building is amazing, well its our home planet so there is not too much left to the imagination, and the idea of the Akquarians is genius! They came out of the ocean so of course they were kind of spared from the apocalyptic brunt of whatever drove the humans away from Earth. This whole story is so genius and I really need to know what happens next.
Also I'm a huge Dybgo stan so I really hope him and Eden are endgame, although I highly doubt it.
Tropes: - strong fmc - new world - dystopian society - unrequited love - heart-wrenching friendships - found family?
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to dip their toe into the sci-fi ocean but also for anyone who is looking for an absolutely addicting and jaw dropping read. I nearly missed my train stop thanks to this book, so its definitely worth the five stars!!
The mixture between Sci-Fi and Fantasy is perfectly blended and I honestly think this is a great book for Sci-Fi newcomers.
I was sucked into the vivid world building and the culture of the Akquarians was fascinating! It was easy to understand and had me glued to learn more about them. Part II in the book reminded me of the aesthetics of Atlanteans with its own cool twist and I absolutely loved that!
The pace of the story was fast, which was perfect as it added to the suspense and adrenaline of the characters experiencing the new world, and as mentioned above, the world-building was written beautifully and was memorizing!!
I would have loved to see more romance between Eden and Rooke. Not sure if it is intended to be a slow-burn, if so, it definitely is slow. But what was not slow was the action! Definitely an action-packed plot that had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Oh and the cliffhanger!!! I need book two now!!
If you're a fan of sci-fi, and you like political intrigue, a once-paradise Earth now infested with ship-eating monsters, and a culture of water people, then this book is for you!
The basic premise is you have this crew going on a rescue mission to an abandoned/forsaken Earth, but when they arrive, they realize that it's more of a paradise (other than the monsters).
The story gave me Annihilation vibes by Jeff Vandermeer: the mystery, the deadliness, everything that they run into is new and can potentially kill them. I was invested in this story about 1/4 of the way through. The stakes and tension felt constantly high but not in a way that affected the pace negatively.
All the characters felt fresh and believable. I loved the dynamics of the entire crew and following the FMC Eden and all of her potential love interests evolve throughout the story. There's a romantic element to the story, and it's a big part of it, but it never overtakes the plot.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read and found myself wanting to go back to it at night. I'm really looking forward to reading book 2 in this duology series!
I absolutely loved it. This book had everything a sci-fi lover could ever need and more - dystopian world, myth earth, monster aliens, ships, and one twist after the next.
I love stories like this, and this was executed wonderfully. The world-building was fantastic, vivid, and easy to follow, the relationships between characters relatable, especially under such pressures.
A dash of romance and you've got yourself a wild ride from start to finish, with a cliffhanger that will leave you stunned.
What an addictive read. I loved every minute of it. Engaging storyline, memorable characters and filled with mystery and suspense. The love in this story has its own mysteries and suspense from different characters and overall makes for a satisfying and enjoyable read.
What a fantastic book! When Eden Falls is a fast-paced, cracker of a read, I could hardly put it down. Set on Earth, but not an Earth as we know it, its inhabitants are dangerous, not easily trusted (and a little creepy I have to say!). I loved everything about this story; there's fish out of water feels, love triangle tension, misplaced loyalty, weird non-human rituals, yearning, romance and loss. I could easily see this as a movie or TV series. Roll on book 2, I just pre-ordered and I can't wait!
I received and ARC of this book but this review is honest and my own personal view.
I love this book, the premise is original and unique.
The story starts as the crew of a spaceship are off on a mission to the planet where their race originally came from, Earth.
They get there and then have to put up with the perils and pitfalls of landing on a planet that was evacuated many many years ago. What will they come across? Who or what will they find? Will they find what are looking for and will they get home?
Alana is a good writer and so the story is easy to read and follow and the relationships between the characters are fully fleshed out and well written.
There is a romance or maybe two involved and it is sweet going through it with the characters. The story keeps you involved and you find yourself rooting for them as they get frustrated and angry at the way things have played out.
This is not a stand alone book as the ending is a cliff hanger, so you are left wanting to know more about their story.
I can't wait for the second book to come out.
I would highly recommend this book and author, who I guarantee has many more great stories left to tell.
This book has the right combination of a fantasy-ish setting and mysterious, magical feel of it. It's got high stakes ("We need to find a way home"), dangerous monsters, and an "alien" (if you can call it that) species that you can't fully trust.
I didn't quite appreciate the abrupt turn of events toward the end (not the cliffhanger ending, but before that). The love triangle is...well, I suppose love triangles are just never easy to deal with, and I hope it gets sorted out soon. I found the "aliens" ability to instantly speak a supposedly dead and ancient language just by "reading" old texts also hard to believe.
That being said, this book still hit all the right notes for me and it was a really fun read. It's sci-fi, though not exactly. And it's the type of sci-fi that I enjoy! So much Stargate SG-1 and Star Trek Voyager vibes. I loved that!
When Eden Falls is the debut novel by the author, and a great start to what I hope will be an exciting series.
A very well written book for it being the author's debut novel, it was a page turner from the start and didn't lag the fictional things were described so beautifully it made it feel real.
Three thousand years ago humans lived on a planet called Earth but because it became uninhabitable they are now living in Allura, from where our MCs travel on a mission after finding one of their Solarfleet ship's signals. They trace it back to earth but what the encounter there is baffling and the monsters seem so real!
The romance was good and had a little love triangle going on, the book is not a standalone and ends in a cliffhanger, the plot is well constructed with amazing characters and a world of things to explore with the detailed descriptions the author has intricately woven to take us into her world of monsters and spaceships.
I’ve never been one who’s into Sci-fi. I usually find it too complex to follow or escape into, but as an avid reader I’m always looking to broaden my horizons. When Eden Falls was such a great way to dip your toes in the genre. Beautifully written and wonderfully descriptive I found myself engrossed in the plot and falling for the characters.
Set 3000 years in the future long after humans have left earth and colonized another planet far across the galaxies, the concept of earth is just a myth…. Eden and Rooke along with their crew are in search of a missing scouting ship when they end up trapped on earth in the process. It’s dystopian. There’s action and adventure. Romance and so so so so much more. I was so invested that I didn’t even notice I was at the end of the book and then…. WHAM. Cliffhanger.
Just go read it! As a fantasy lover, this novel was such a fun read and I hope you love it too!
This is a smart, thoughtful sci-fi novel. Wilson has created a plausible future reality that forces the reader to confront the questions plaguing today's humans and wonder at what our fate will be.
Let's hope it isn't the same as that of Rooke, Eden and the rest of the crew who find themselves on Earth, thousands of years after we abandoned it. The story of who they meet and how they engage with what they discover is beautifully paced, unfolding with an unrequited love story in the background which adds the humanity of this intriguing space drama. In fact relationships and not space, aliens and monster, are really the core of this story and it is so much richer for it.
I cannot wait for the follow-up so that I can find out what happens to our intrepid, imperilled travellers.
If you are looking for a book with world-building and characters that don’t leave you like “Huh what's going on for 200 pages” then let me tell you something this book checks all the boxes:
✔️ Great world building ✔️ Character with depth and personality ✔️ Romance that leaves you blushing ✔️ My emotions wrecked ✔️ me trying to be Sherlock Holmes trying to figure out what is happening next ✔️ My ability to sleep is gone from this cliffhanger ✔️ My anticipation for the next book Through the Roof ✔️ Have you not read this?… what are you doing!??
Who doesn't love a Earth rediscovery story? Ok, maybe the Eden, Rooke, and the crew when they discover the signal they've been following is on the mythic planet... After all, those are some nasty bugs!
It's a roller coaster ride with unexpected twists and turns. Definitely ended leaving me looking forward to hearing the next book!
One of our authors at Agency Press told me to read this sci-fi, and I love it! I am always happy to discover a new author, and I haven't been reading as much sci-fi as I used to. This book hits all the right beats, and I can't wait for the second book. I will be recommending to my grade 12 students who love sci-fi.
What an amazing sci-fi fantasy! Within you will find terrifying creatures, curious new humanoid species, and a little spice. All season the unique plot which was exciting and intriguing. I couldn’t put it down…finished it in three days. I highly recommend!
I absolutely love this sci-fi romance read. I started with the sample and immediately purchased it because I had to know what happens! Then I read it in 24 hours. Can't wait for the next installment.
Wow, I loved this novel. I haven't read sci-fi in years, but this was just fantastic and made me want to read sci-fi again. The story was very intriguing and loved the mix of characters. I connected with Eden well and felt I was on this adventure with her. I can't wait for book two.
As I delved into When Eden Falls by Alana Faye Wilson, I found myself drawn into a familiar yet intriguing world reminiscent of the beloved 100 tv/book series. From the outset, the parallels between the two were apparent, yet Wilson’s narrative held its own unique charm. Despite being a very short book, When Eden Falls wastes no time in immersing readers in a whirlwind of adventure, romance, and suspense. Wilson skillfully crafts a fast paced story that keeps you eagerly turning the pages, eager to uncover the next twist and turn. The blend of sci-fi elements with elements of romance and action creates a dynamic and engaging read. I found myself swept away by the characters’ journeys and the mysteries of the world they inhabit.
The action scenes in When Eden Falls were nothing short of thrilling. Wilson’s descriptive prose pulled me right into the heart of the action, making each moment feel vivid and intense. Whether it was navigating treacherous waters or facing off against formidable foes, I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly following every twist and turn. The discovery of the new humanoid sea-faring species added an exciting layer to the story. Wilson’s world building prowess shone through as I delved into the intricacies of this previously unknown civilization.
In essence, the author’s exploration of Akquarian culture’s gender dynamics served as a commentary on the complexity of societal norms and the importance of cultural relativism. At first glance, the apparent sexism within Akquarian society seemed straightforward. However, as the narrative unfolded, Wilson deftly revealed layers of complexity. The revelation that the female population of Akquarian is significantly outnumbered by males challenged my initial assumptions. Additionally, learning that Akquarian women have agency in choosing their mates and professions added further intrigue. Yet, despite these freedoms, the Allurian crew’s reactions reflected their own cultural biases and preconceptions. Their inability to comprehend the nuances of Akquarian society highlighted the inherent limitations of cultural understanding and the danger of imposing one’s own values onto others.
Overall, When Eden Falls was a captivating read that left me wanting more. Wilson has crafted a compelling narrative that leaves a lasting impression, and I have no doubt that the sequel will be just as thrilling.
Eden, second in command of the the ship the Orka. is hopelessly in love with the Captain Rooke. Eden, Rooke and their crew crash land on a planet they soon realize is the Earth of old legend, abandoned long ago by humankind. Their ship is assailed by horror bugs and they find themselves “taken in” by the Akquarian people, and drawn into intrigue and danger in the Akquarian stronghold, all the meanwhile trying get access to their ship and fix it so they can leave.
I found the first chapter quite info-dumpy and dry, but the premise was interesting so I ploughed through it, and the plot took off once that was done, the the world building intriguing!
To be honest, the writing style wasn’t my favourite, I found it a bit verbose and filtered, but I think that could just be a matter of preference. That being said I was absolutely hooked by the plot and found myself saying “just one more chapter” until I’d finished the book. Usually love triangles drive me spare, but I found myself enjoying the dynamic between Rooke,Akquarian man Dygbo and Eden.
Overall a solid debut, and that cliffhanger😱 I’m already hanging out for the next book and this one isn’t even out yet
i wish i could do 3.5, because 3 seems too harsh but i am just not feeling a 4. maybe it’s just because i don’t usually read sci-fi, but unknowns after unknowns just left me feeling quite unsatisfied. also, every time we found something out i instantly doubted it, which made every reveal a lot less exciting. i did enjoy the concept, it made me think a lot about planet of the apes and i enjoyed the differences in culture and technology. i enjoyed the little bit of love triangle initially, because i genuinely liked both options which is rare! but i didn’t like how quickly her opinion changed of Dybgo. i feel it may have made more sense for her to be frightened of him, even though what happened wasn’t inherently anyone’s fault, but she seemed to just very abruptly stop trusting him and became very cold. although saying that i do suppose everyone was lying about everything!

Eden and her crew find themselves stranded on Earth 3000 years after it was abandoned by humans. Whilst they struggle with fixing their ship and trying not to get murdered by the horrific creatures that come out at night, they discover there is indeed intelligent life still on earth... the Akquarians, who welcome them into their intriguing world. But can they be trusted?
This is sci-fi that isn't bogged down in techy terms, its packed with action & adventure, really likeable characters, friendships that tug the heartstrings, a love-triangle that makes you wonder who to root for (yes i'm swooning over a fish-man), beautiful world-building, emotional scenes (Alana how could you do that to us!!!) and a cliffhanger ending that made me order the next book immediately!!
Oh and you know whats cool? Periods being a THING in a book. Heck yeah, WOMEN BLEED.
We started with some pretty epic lore that quickly spun out into a firefly-esque mission and pretty & gritty dystopian!
I LOVED learning about earth in Eden’s world and the creatures currently inhabiting it in her future. They both terrify and intrigue me. And the politics they find themselves in… Our heroine’s internal battles of love and loyalty and courting, even under such circumstances as this, I just adored all of it. Right up to that pretty little cliff we are left on in the end;)
