A wildly intriguing, intimately suspenseful story about the human capacity for good and evil – and what pushes us to inevitably, and often tragically, turn to our darker emotions for comfort.
Jacob Watts broke his neck in Afghanistan. Now he’s in D.C. with no job, a therapist, an uncontrollable tick in his arm, and PTSD. And he can’t pay his rent.
His new, and monetarily necessary roommate, Remy Moreau, isn’t helping either. Cold and detached, she might be a savant – but she’s also socially inept, has absolutely no boundaries, and is possibly dealing drugs out of their apartment. When the two come in contact with a stiff and blood-covered body in Capitol Row, the ambiguous Remy Moreau will lead him on an obsessive-compulsive hunt in pursuit of a tormented killer.
Can Remy, with Watts in tow, catch a murderer before he strikes again? And what are Remy’s real intentions with Watts? Is she even capable of anything resembling real human emotion?
A Study in Sin is a fast-paced modern update of a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery.
August Wainwright writes about money, sex, power, politics, societies, philosophies, and life - all the things worth reading about. He is currently writing two ongoing series.
The Remy Moreau series is comprised of modern mysteries based loosely on the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. The first book in the series, A Study in Sin, was released on May 20th, 2013 and will be followed by a new volume every 3-4 weeks.
The second series has the working title "The Portrait" and is a political & philosophical thriller series.

This first book in a new series introduces us to two interesting characters, Jay Watts, an airforce vet invalided out of the force and Remy Moreau, an enigmatic amateur detective. Jay is still coping with PTSD and trying to find a job and a cheap place to stay when he is introduced to Remy who is looking for a flatmate. Jay discovers that Remy is often called upon by the police to use her extraordinary powers of observation and detection to help solve crimes and the two quickly become involved in an unusual murder-mystery. The story is well written, fast paced and absorbing. The construction of the story was interesting with the solving of the crime in part one and the backstory telling the origins of the crime two decades earlier forming part two. I found the change in pace between the two sections a little distracting and anticlimatic but the second part quickly became interesting in it's own right but without the involvement of the two crime solvers. I look forward to meeting Remy (and perhaps Jay) again and seeing how her character develops. There seem to be many facets of her character still to be developed by the author and I look forward to reading further books in the series. I received this book from the LibraryThing Member Giveaway program as a free gift from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Mr. Wainwright asked me to read this novel before it is officially published, for feedback. I am pleased to say this is an excellent novel, the character of Remy is wonderful, and I look forward to the next novel in this series.
Excellent writing, good background, wonderful characters. Thanks August!
A well written mystery introducing a new detective with an excellent eye to detail. She has a sidekick who is dealing with issues of his own and whom she is trying to heal and make whole. It is interesting how she solves the case finding or noticing the little clues that the police officers working the case overlook or do not think is that important. She keeps a lot of her ideas to herself but keeps pushing her police counterpart to keep looking and thinking.
The case starts in modern day Washington, DC but goes back in time to explain how the victims and the accused came to that point that led to the crime. Then Remy tells us what clues led her to the suspect that is arrested. A very interesting story twist to me.
I look forward to reading the other two Remy books that have come out. She and Jay make a good team and I hope that they continue to work together. If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan then Remy fits the bill of that type of detective.
I love this series. What Mr. Wainwright has done is taken Sherlock Holmes’ stories and brought them into the 21st century. Knowing the original stories doesn’t, in any way, take away from the very good writing and story telling based in modern day America. A Study in Sin is the first in Mr. Wainwright’s series and I love the "new" Sherlock Holmes, Remy Moreau. She’s brilliant, observant, and quirky - just like Sir Arthur Conan Dolan’s character. I’ve already read the next in the series, The Saint Mary’s Cipher, based on one of my all-time favorite Holmes’ stories, and look forward to an email letting me know the next in the series is ready to download. Kudos to Mr. Wainwright for taking something old and making it new again.
A murder mystery spanning several decades beginning in present day. Part one: disabled Afghanistan veteran, Jay Wicks defined himself as Special Forces Air Force isn't adjusting well to civilian life and is in need of a roommate. Remy Moreau, a female 'Monk' also is in need of a roommate; together they solve a mysterious murder that has taken place. Part 2: The backstory of the murder told from the murderer's point of view.
I enjoyed this book, especially part two. It is a quick-paced, easy read with engaging characters. I look forward to seeing more of Remy Moreau.
The author has taken on the daunting challenge of reimagining Sherlock Holmes as a Woman and has succeeded with Remy Moreau. She's brilliant, quirky and unlike the original quite of bit of fun. Mr. Wainwright does a nice job of story telling and creating characters that we as readers can care about.
How much did I enjoy it? I downloaded the second story in the series within minutes of finishing this one.
I started reading the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories at the same time and was amazed at how little of the original text was altered, giving this story the feel of an AU Sherlock fan fic. The free ebook strikes again!
