The best castles, historic houses, royal palaces, and stately homes to visit in Scotland. Contains detailed entries with locations, description, ownership, plan, and drawings. 64 pages of color photographs.
An interesting little travel book about castles and manors on Scotland. It's a list of the "best" as determined by the authors of the book. I like that it's an unofficial list and not one determined by a travel agency or the country itself. My main complaint is that the pictures weren't all together with the buildings. If you wanted to see colored photos of the castles and homes you needed to continuously page back and forth, as the colored photos are all located in the middle of the book.
Would recommend checking it out from your library rather than purchasing it.
Although it got great reviews, I was a bit disappointed in this book. First, there are no color photographs with each listing; you have to go 3/4 of the way into the book to see the "color section". If you're going to put color photos in anyway, why not just include them with their entry?
Next, while there is a Glossary, a glossary of Titles and Offices and an Index (page for the entry & page for the color photo) of Castles and Stately Homes.
At the beginning of the book, the reader is told that this is "Scotland's Best" as determined by author Martin Coventry and not through any "official" means.
Castles or homes are listed in alpha order with a reference to the color photo pg. underneath. There is a thumbnail of a map, a brief essay telling the history of the home, one to three other BLACK & WHITE photos illustrating the "beauty" of the home -- I really think these would have been so much better in color!
At the end of each entry is a gray box with basic info. including distance (miles) from major cities, if the home is open to the public and when, contact info., "features", and a list of 3-5 other "nearest" castles and stately homes.
If you can borrow this from your local public library, this travel guide is worth a look, but I would not waste money on it.
