My Coptic instructor, Dr. James Hoch, said that Lambdin's grammar of Sahidic Coptic was the best didactic grammar he had ever used. I agree. I've studied my share of philological grammars, and I don't know of any that can compare with Lambdin for artfulness of pacing and clarity of exposition. My abiding love of the Coptic language is no doubt at least in part Lambdin's doing, and I am deeply grateful.

I learned Coptic using this book and so far no other book on any of the ancient Egyptian languages came close to the usability both with or without instructor and/or knowledge of previous stages of this language family.

The book is intended to be an introduction which means not every eventual grammatical phenomenon is being dealt with but after working through the book (and the exercises!) you are able to read all sorts of Sahidic Coptic texts and the glossary contains nearly all of the more common words. The overview on the tenses given in the back of the book as well as an index by topic makes it easy to quickly look up things.
