There were only three things Nix had ever wanted out of life. A home, A family, A past. The three things she would never have. A mysterious watch is only reminder of the life she could not remember. Even standing in a sea full of people, Nix could feel eyes on her. With her unease rising with every breath, she let her eyes scan the crowd. Their eyes met. A clash of green. The same eyes that haunted her, every nightmare and every dream. The same green eyes Nix saw staring back at herself in the mirror. When a glance with a stranger sends her whole world into a spiral, Nix has no choice but to face the truth. Her Mother was still alive. She’s no longer alone. On her sixteenth birthday, Nix returns home, only to find her Mother waiting with her foster mother Linda. But not everything is at it seems. Not only is she no longer alone, but she has a family. A family of magical time keepers. Nix is unwittingly thrown into a war that she did not know existed. And if she doesn’t help stop it, time as they know it will end.
The storyline is well thought out, I love the magic system. The main character is likable. There are some side characters that I can’t wait to learn more about. No spoilers here. My only criticism is that I thought this was a stand-alone and it ended on a cliffhanger! So now I’ll need to wait and see what happens.
My expectations for self-published KU content is pretty low - I think many writers put things out without much editing and it feels a lot like I’m reading a first draft - having said that I’m so impressed with how well written this book is! I’m sure the publishing companies will be knocking on her door.
I loved this book! The magic system was really unique and interesting, and the author does a really good job of world building. The characters were likeable and I can’t wait to see what they get up to in the next book!
This was an ARC review. This book was interesting from the beginning but got even deeper towards the middle and end. I wish I could’ve gotten more in some areas but overall a good book with a cliffhanger. I figured what happened was gonna happen but still was shocked at how it unfurled. The growth within a character was well needed and glad it happened until… I can say no more. I can’t wait to read the next one so I can find out what happens next. Adventure and thrilling and mystery in between, Check this book out.
The Watch of Secrets: Time of Light by Raine Winters is a young adult book with elements of magical realism and mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat! Nix was a fun character to get to know and Raine Winter’s writing style had me picturing everything as if I was really there, immersed in Nix’s magical world with her. The story ends on a major cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Can I alter time so that I can experience this novel for the first time again?
The Watch of Secrets: Time of Light is a young adult book that gave me the thrill and excitement of discovering a world that I had never imagined before. The story line was not only well thought out, but it was also engaging and leaves a reader on their toes. Reading Winters’ debut novel gave me the nostalgic feeling of discovering a pure and magical adventure that left me wanting more. Very similar to how I felt when I discovered Harry Potter! While it is not about wizards, witches and magical creatures, it is a storyline of two prominent families that are destined to be the protectors and watchers of time. I find this very intriguing! Each individual member was born with the power to alter and adapt time itself, but one family held the power of the past while the other holds the power of the future. The wielders of the powers just happens to be the family heirlooms, the pocket watches. After reading this book, I know that these pocket watches will play more of a significant role as the story continues to evolve! Within every passage of the book, I imagined myself as the character feeling and seeing everything so vividly through Winters’ ornate writing. I immersed myself into the world that she detailed within each page. I enjoyed the playful hints of attraction and love between two main characters. Furthermore, I appreciated the strength that the MFC displayed throughout her journey. Unfortunately I was able to foreshadow how a particular scene would play out; however, what I didn’t predict was the ending. What a cliffhanger! I went to turn the page on my kindle and was shocked and sorely disappointed that that was the ending. I had to double check myself that I hadn’t missed a page! If you’re looking for a fun, magical, and adventurous story look no further this is your book! I am excited to see where Winters leads us as the story unfolds.
🤍Thanks to for Raine for trusting me with their novel in return for my personal review🤍
