Phoebe Dunn’s beloved photographic picture book all about a curious little kitten!
Follow Pickle the kitten on her many fun adventures as she explores the meadow, makes new friends, and cuddles up with her best pal, Jenny. This endearing photographic picture book is a purr fect addition to any animal lover's library.
Judy Dunn is the author of many books for young children. Some of her most popular titles are projects she worked on with her mother, acclaimed photographer Phoebe Dunn. Those works include The Little Rabbit, The Little Duck, The Little Puppy, The Little Kitten, and many more.
I have zero objectivity about this book, I read it hundreds of times when I was small and rereading it made me feel like I was four again in the best possible way.
You can't miss with a book that features photographs of adorable kittens and photogenic children. Even though the photographs make it seem like an older book, the story itself could happen today. I don't usually like books with photographs vs. illustrations, but I liked this one and would like to see some others in the diverse Random House PICTUREBACK series
This is THE book of my childhood. I was so excited to find it again! The pictures are just as adorable as I remembered. I'm so glad I was able to find it again.
Great book for language learners because there are SO many photos. Vocabulary could be a stretch depending on the level, but all of the pictures show exactly what the words say.
So I made a mistake a few weeks ago. I read the little guy The Day Tiger Rose Said Goodbye. As he told me the following week, probably on the suggestion of his parent's, it was too mature. I'm not so sure about that. Death sucks there's no doubt about that but it strikes at any age. To make amends I have been keeping an eye out for books about cats that don't die to try to erase the whole Tiger Rose episode from his mind. Thankfully he didn't bring her up at the end of this book like he did last week after an innocent book about a dog (that didn't die). This book was originally published in 1983. The cover was redone recently so that it looks a bit more contemporary. It's not. There are a few pictures that place it firmly in nostalgia land though and the text is rather long winded. I abridged it drastically about half way through by just explaining the pictures with a simple sentence. Maybe later we'll read the unabridged version. At 4 though he didn't notice the editing and I was ready for a nap of my own.
This is exactly like The Little Puppy... except with a kitten. :) Not much is different and the book is so old that I doubt many of today's kids would really enjoy it. There are many newer books like it that kids would enjoy. The pictures are cute but what pictures of a kitten aren't? And the reader is reminded of the age with any picture that has a person in it. The story is very basic also. I definitely won't find myself recommending it - of that I can be sure.
When I saw this book in my classroom library, I was transported back to my childhood. I adored this book when I was little and have vivid memories of reading it aloud with my mother. This timeless tale of a curious kitten is both endearing and humorous. The photographs are captivating and realistic. I could use this book in my classroom for a science lesson on mammals. Although this story is fiction, the photographs depict kittens soon after birth. The students use this book as inspiration for further internet or library research on cats and other mammals.
A charming story that follows the birth and the following adventures of a kitten that is named Pickles. From one wild romp into another this is clearly a wonderful book that shows what wild adventures a little one's curiosity can always put them into.
The book is given illustrations with actual pictures that are quite charming to the reader. Definitely a good book for your child who will have fun pointing out Pickles on every page.
Holy moly. Forgot all about this book until I saw it at the thrift store today -- thought it looked vaguely familiar, so I picked it up to flip through it. The image of that kitten all splayed on the ground assured me that I had this book around as a child, and I read the hell out of it. I couldn't help but buy a copy even though I am not into the aesthetic at all as an adult. It's a sweet book! It's basically all nostalgia, but who cares.
This was a cute little story. Nothing great, mind you, but for anyone who is a cat lover, this book rings so true.
Little Jenny's cat has a litter of kittens. Jenny is taken with the one who is more curious than the others. That is the kitten the family keeps. She names him Pickle since he is always in a pickle. Pickle keeps wandering off until finally Jenny finds a solution.
I loved this book as a little girl and saved it for my daughter who already loves it at 8 months old. The adventures of the curious kitten Pickles has always stayed with me. It's just an adorable tale with great pictures (even if they are dated now).
A book that I no doubt encountered at some point in my childhood, as I remember reading many books like this. However, I don't recommend it for modern youngsters, as it models some risky pet care choices, such as tying the string of a balloon around a tiny kitten.
