The princess has been betrayed and her body sent to Fai’s frozen home world of Seresu. In order to follow Sakura, the wrecked remains of the band of travelers must pay their price to the witch. And once they arrive, Fai will have to confront the one he’s been fleeing–and the horrific truth of his past!
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Throw everything and everything you love about this series out the door! In these past few volumes, everything has changed. Almost every character has gone through an intense transformation. There are two Syaoran's, one who continues to travel with Sakura and the others, and another who is looking for the feathers on his own. With Sakura's soul split up from her body, it'll be interesting to see how feathers continue to be selected. Then we have Fye. We've finally learned about his past, and let's just say, he isn't the happy, innocent magician we have known throughout this novel. His past is terrible and devastating, to those who know him.
I'm so sad...Fye was my absolute favourite character, and to finally learn of his awful past has made it difficult for me to like him again. Still, the worst part was the fact that .
So Fai has a terrible past. at least some things are explained but woah the story got too complex. I can't imagine what will happen next and how everything will be okay.. will it be okay?
"Oh, I'll just sit for a couple of minutes before bed and read a few pages of Tsubasa." *Finishes volume 20* "Holy shit, where is volume 21, I know it's here somewhere!!" *Finishes volume 21* "JFC WHERE IS VOLUME 22, I NEED TO KNOW IMMEDIATELY, MY POOR DARLING!!!!"
Tsubasa is in a way a love letter to all of CLAMP's other works. I went into this having read almost all - definitely all relevant - series by CLAMP, so I can't say for sure, but I think this series is only half as fun if you haven't read the other works (preferably all). If you enjoy Easter Eggs and cameos, Tsubasa is an absolute treat.
For the longest time, Tsubasa was the longest manga series I owned; anything beyond 10 volumes makes me think twice as I find that most lengthy series just drag unnecessarily. However, it was impossible for me to say no to Tsubasa, Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura have been long-time favourite manga characters of mine, not to mention that I am generally very fond of CLAMP and all their big and small crossovers. Reading a story that combines almost their entire bibliography and with Sakura and Syaoran as the main characters was too good to say no to. It should also be mentioned that this series is heavily interwoven with xxxHolic's plot and should best be read alongside each other.
This Syaoran and Sakura are not the same from Cardcaptor Sakura (although the original Sakura makes a cameo). In essence, this is a story about travelling between dimensions - the same person can exist in different versions of themselves in different universes. Sakura and Syaoran travel between the different worlds - all very different - and meet characters and elements from all across CLAMP's other works. In fact, some characters appear more than once to highlight how the same being can exist and lead a different life in different worlds. It's really fun to see the characters from other stories living different lives, some are funny and some are bittersweet. CLAMP has killed off a fair amount of its characters in other works so it's nice to see some of them leading happier and peaceful lives.
In addition to meeting a whole lot of known characters, there are also a couple of Tsubasa original characters such as Fay and Kurogane who accompany Sakura and Syaoran on their travels. I've grown to love Fay and Kurogane almost as much as I love the other two - so while Tsubasa is very much a homage to other CLAMP works, it's also a very character-driven story with both Fay and Kurogane having intricate and deep personalities. I also have to express my apologies to Kurogane - I always expected not to like him because I'm not very fond of brawns-over-brains type of characters, but I was very wrong about him; great character, smart as well a strong and just a really great guy.
Being a work of CLAMP, it's almost needless to say that the art is beautiful. That being said, this is more of a shounen-esque series which also shows in the art with the somewhat oddly length limbs and a greater focus on action, weapons and muscles. I prefer shoujo art, but the facial art is much the same as other CLAMP works so I can absolutely live with that.
A downside of Tsubasa is plain and simple that it gets confusing. There are time skips, world switching, doubles across different series (xxxHolic) and rather vague motivations from the villain's side. At some point, I just decided to go with the flow rather than trying to make sense of every detail. There's a bit of a loose end, though I wouldn't exactly call it a band ending either. Now that they are working on a sequel, it'll be interesting to see where things will lead to next.
Either way, an absolute gem if you like CLAMP and crossovers, and Sakura, Syaoran, Fay and Kurogane are just a great team of characters - to be fair, Mokona is as much part of the team and deserves a mention too. Finally, I just love these characters.

The thrill ride continues, and we finally learn Fai's backstory! A lot of this volume is composed of flashbacks, so there's not much I can say without going DEEP into spoiler territory. What I can say is that his backstory is exactly what you'd expect from CLAMP. Seeing Fai's past, while incredibly sad, also gives me so much more respect for him as a character. Throughout the series he's been hiding his personality from the group, so it was refreshing to see what he was like before he began the journey, even if it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience. It was also nice to see how much Yuuko cares about the group, we don't see many emotions other than neutrality from her. One final note: See you in the next review.
Well I guess we’re back to playing the waiting game, as this collection was basically full of exposition about the group planning what they would do now that Sakura has been separated from them. The final decision (that they would go find her body on Fai’s home world) was completely expected, but this forced journey to Fai’s world ended up revealing a lot about the magician’s backstory. Fai’s been carrying a lot of secrets from the group, which doesn’t totally surprise me, but I’m not exactly liking that his second “curse” is that he has ties to the enemy magician who is out to get Sakura’s memories and defeat Yuko...I guess more will be revealed in the next storyarc, now that they’ve all arrived in Fai’s land and Fei Wang Reed is starting to make moves closer to them again.

I am at loss of words. Yet I have a lot to say and a lot to SCREAM. I need a void to scream into.
I was super curious about Fay's past since the beginning, also because in the anime his story isn't explained (if I'm not wrong) and since he was one of the most appealing characters. BUT IT'S ALWAYS TRUE THAT CURIOSITY K1LLED THE CAT.
This volume is BLACK. Black is the color of the part in the past/memories. Half of this volume narrates Fay's past. Black is also the mood you get from reading this, it's all gloomy and sad.
I bet all the travelers are reconsidering their adventures with Fay right now. I can't think of who's most disappointed in Fay right now. Probably Kuro or Mokona btw. Mokona really loved him and must be so hurt. Kurogane is regretting saving him 100%.
Fai's past is so horrible, dark and twisted. Because he and his twin brother were both they were imprisoned. Only to see everyone (guilty and innocent) in their world arrive at their prison dead. The the sovereign came after he'd killed everyone else to cast his final blame on them before killing himself. They only way either of them could escape is if one died. His brother sacrificed himself to allow him to leave. So devastating. Now we're about to find out what Fai's (or actually Yûi) other curse is.

With Sakura's body split from her soul, the latter within the Dream World, Syaoran and his friends head to Seresu to find her, only to learn the horrific truths of Fai's upbringing from the mad king he has been running from all this time. CLAMP brings another painful past to light with this emotional entry sure to tug at the heartstrings of its fans. Will anything brought to light reveal the powers of Fai, or further drive him apart from his companions?

Poor, poor Fai. Nothing is what he said, but why all the lies? A few I can kinda understand but some of the others, like not saying he was cursed, don't make much sense. Here's hopeing this untangles next volume!
Fai quickly became my favorite so I have been waiting so long to read the volume about his past and why he couldn't return to his world. So dark but I Love it.
Here we go again with bringing back the dead. The easiest thing for that man would be to jump over to Marvel or DC where resurrecting the dead happens every few months.

I remember thinking a few volumes back, when I learned more about Kurogane's background that I was excited to know the other characters' backgrounds.
Man, I thought Kurogane's wretchedly sad, but compared to Fai's...or Yui's...
Just because they were born twins. (Though they were adorable twins; I love the panel of their clasped hands when they refused to part ways when their punishment was announced.)
The first curse was that he would be compelled to kill any stronger wizard in his presence. (However that breaks once it's acted upon the first time.) Fei-Wang intended for Fai to kill Syaoran, but it turns out it was Sakura after she got her feather back. We also see that Fei-Wang was the one behind this, and when the real Fai jumps and dies in front of Fai/Yui, he wants to turn back time so he can make his twin alive again. Oh, Fei-Wang, evil you.
Back in Seresu they meet Ashura-o, who is now awakened and the king. It seems everybody else was killed long ago. Ashura-o was the one who rescued Fai/Yui from the snowy region where criminals go.
Everybody else traveling with Fai/Yui sees his past, too...
Fei-Wang hints at a second curse but we don't know what it is yet.

November 2013: 4 Stars Okay, first of all, remember in my review for volume 19, I said that Fai needs to catch a break? Yeah, that hasn't happened yet. GODDAMIT NOW YOU'RE TELLING ME HIS *CHILDHOOD* WAS WROUGHT WITH MISERY AS WELL?!?! Poor. Freaking. FAI!!!
Spoilers: Okay, so basically, I didn't really grasp the point of this volume except for what follows: A) Fai has been lying about his magic from the start B) Ashura-o, whom we met as the god of another world, is a king in Fai's world? What? C) Fai had a twin brother, named Fai, who died in order for Fai (who's actual name was Yûi) to escape the prison they were shut in to. But Fai/Yûi unwittingly made the contract with Fei-Wang Reed right after Fei-Wang struck a deal with Fai's twin brother, Fai. (I know this is confusing, but it makes sense if you read the volume). Then Ashura-o came to collect Fai/Yûi, and showed him that Fai wasn't dead, since Fai/Yûi's wish was for his brother to not die. Is that it? Jeeeez I hope this is explained a little better in the next volume.
