Was genau bedeutet «Mitte» überhaupt?

Münkler tackles the political term of the center/middle – as a value connected to the right measure, in its relation to power, as a geopolitical idea of both promise and threat, and how it relates to German political discourse. He offers a wealth of insight (which, predictably, is based on Western thinking alone, save an offhand comment about China being called the Middle Kingdom/Country) – I found the chapter on the disdain the intellectual elites of Weimar Germany had for the middle particularly enlightening. Just as well, some idea shine through repeatedly – like the difference between the (conservative) idea of society as a circle in which the middle is the crucial part and the (progressive) counter-model of society as a “marching column” which is led from the front, the avantgarde, while the middle only tags along. Unfortunately, Münkler fails to give this collection of ideas more overarching structure.
