It is a biographical “novel,” and not a serious academic history; however, it does a good job of capturing the drama of what our forefathers suffered for freedoms of worship we take for granted.

Though my own knowledge of the history of that period is minimal, the story is inspiring and makes one want to learn more. I would recommend this book especially for teens, and read aloud even to younger children.

Oh, and John Craig is mentioned once, and I think we are somehow connected to him in our family history. Once I discover how, I can edit this.

I picked up the book to learn more about John Knox, founder of the Presbyterian Church.

The writing was disappointing, and there wasn’t much about history. The author assumes the reader knows the background history of the mid=sixteenth century and many of the minor characters, and picks up the story after much of relevant action has already happened, without explanation of it. The intimate conversation between Knox and his wife and mother-in-law seems silly and completely made up.
