this second volume was definitely more horrifying and confusing than the first volume. there's a lot of gore and violence, as well as body trauma.
i'm still interested in these figuratively and literally toxic gods (which all seem to be inspired by biblically accurate angels...) and how they originated/came to invade this world's earth
I really liked this volume 👀 I want Volume three ASAP.
I personally don’t understand where people are getting confused with this story. I enjoy the goofy tone mixed it with just how dark this gets at times. I’m really liking the set up for this.
This felt far more chaotic and less cohesive than volume one. The tonal shifts from darkness to light humor also felt more abrupt. But the world is still so fascinating, the art is gorgeous, and an interesting reveal at the end will bring me back for at least one more volume.
I still don’t have an complete idea of what’s going on, to be honest - while the art stays pretty good consistently, the story is still lacking a bit. There hasn’t been too much revealed lore-wise, and also other characters’ powers haven’t really been showed off either, disappointingly.
Hopefully the third volume can entice me into this series a bit more - otherwise, I might just stop at that volume to be honest.
Gorgeous artwork as always. Some questions are answered, more are elicited. The action sequences could be clearer; its sometimes hard to tell what exactly happened. Tokinaga is cute and has such a caring personality. I wish I could support a relationship between him and Waka - the darn age gap. Luckily, that's not something that's smiled upon or being portrayed in the story. Another plus is the lack of female sexualization/objectification. Male too.
Just as violent and gory as volume 1, maybe more confusing. The gods are interesting, I'm a sucker for cosmic/eldritch horror like that. But some of the perspectives are getting muddled.
Y yo, feliz.
okay why is this actually so good the art is amazing their abilities or powers idk are SO CREATIVE AND cool all the characters are interesting and good looking i love this sm 😻😻
I can happily say that there were not a bunch of typos in the second volume of After God. That was such a let down in the first volume. The artwork and design continues to be excellent, but I am struggling with the convoluted nature of the writing. It does not feel out of place for the type of series it is, but it is kind of losing me. I am writing this review a few days after finishing the book, and if you asked me, I could not tell you what happened in it. It just did not stick with me. I think I will still pick up subsequent volumes, but it is not going in the direction that I hoped.
Peak. This manga does not disappoint, even if this volume was little confusing.
//CONTENT SPOILER WARNING//
I was super exited to see Obikawa as he was teased in volume 1. He did in fact not disappoint. He's a fun guy, even if his entrance at the train station was weird as fuck! Also the fact that he can see Waka's eyes makes me very very cuious.
I am glad we're learning more about Waka and/or Alura. I'm curious at what point of the story Alura will take over or in what sort of way Waka and Alura will learn how to work together more than the less. I do nothing but wonder reading this manga.
Also Akio's ability is so cool?? I can't wait to learn more about him.
Another person I'm curious about is Yakou. Who is she? Who is that woman?
And of course my favourite part about reading this manga: Tokinaga. Don't mind me ranting, but I've never experienced this, seriously. There are characters in series and books that I find attractive and there are characters I love a lot and get attached to. But the things Tokinaga makes me feel are seriously indescribable. If he was a real person I'd say I have a massive crush on him. I giggle and kick my feet at the sight of him. He's just so so delicious man. But that's a drawn guy I know through barely 2 volumes. Someone save me please.
Gods have descended upon Tokyo, reducing the entire city to an uninhabitable danger zone. When a young girl by the name of Waka peers through the fence surrounding the zone, she is approached by a wary researcher named Tokinaga. Waka claims that she's come all the way from Saga in order to find a friend, but when the two are suddenly met by a superpowered woman named Yon Uzuki, Waka unleashes a terrifying and unexpected power. Yon realizes that Waka's eyes are like a god's-what secrets is she hiding behind them?
Purchased on a whim whilst in London, I have the first three volumes of this relatively new and ongoing series. The premise is simple, Gods have appeared and are blighting the World. They have the ability to kill with a single glance and areas they have 'infection' are quarantined off for everyone's safety.
The first volume was fast paced and set the scene. The characters are wacky and this second volume introduces more whilst also giving more information around those we have met already. The inhabitants of the research institute are a varied bunch and include failed hybrid experiments, one of whom is a talking cat!
This volume is again rather frantic and its not fully landing with me yet. There are some similarities to Monstress, Volume 1: Awakening but the third volume has some work to do to keep me fully engaged. 3 1/2 stars
In this volume, Waka continues the battle test at the Institute, revealing how little control she has over her abilities. While the Institute is hungry for weapons against the Gods, they aren't stupid or desperate enough to trust Waka very far. While the middle of the volume gives out characters some time to relax, the plot picks up quickly again with surprise attacks and twists.
The art continues to be detailed and particularly unsettling whenever the Gods are involved. Sometimes, I hesitated to turn a page, afraid that the next drawing would be disturbing enough to make me close this manga. Thankfully, things weren't too bad for me, but if I had a worse aversion to twisty patterns and such, I would avoid this series entirely.
Regarding plot and characters, most of the characters are distinct and memorable in both appearance and behavior. Some of them definitely feel more outlandish, but it fits in the context. The banter between the Institute employees is often fun and adds some levity before things get dark again.
Thematically, this volume seems to double down on the idea of society being worse than the Gods. Waka's grief over Shion and desire for vengeance is questioned by others as misguided. This series asks who is truly responsible for a person's fate. I'm interested in seeing how the series continues this thread, but I also worry it won't be handled well in the end.
Overall, this was a good volume 2, and I look forward to reading more
So Waka’s skin turned red (you wouldn’t know it unless they told you) and her personality changes as she suddenly starts winning the test fight against the Anti-God weapon.
Then she’s sedated, returns to normal, and gets assigned to an apartment outside the research facility. And one of her neighbors somehow seems to know that she’s not normal (like can physically see it with his eyes). And, despite an obvious fear response, he gets buddy-buddy and asked her on a date because… I don’t know? So she goes on a date with Tokinaga instead, but their joined by Anti-God research bodyguards, and suddenly thErE’s A GIANT SNAKE AND IT EATS EVERYONE BUT WAKA, AND SHE’S KIDNAPPED AND FORCED TO GO WITH THE BAD GUYS (???) TO MEET WITH THEIR GOD BECAUSE REASONS AND…
…and I’ve got whiplash. What is the plot anymore? I barely met some of these characters and you expect me to worry about their safety all of a sudden when bad guys I also barely know decide to do-an-evil. SLOW DOWN! Explain what’s going on a little more and only one plot hook at a time, please.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this in exchange for review.
In this second installment of After God, we continue to follow Waka's journey with the Anti-God Research Institute. The team doesn't know if they can completely trust her, even if she's sworn off allegiance to the Gods. Her eyes say distrust, but her words and actions are opposite. As Waka becomes closer to her new neighbors, she meets several new faces dedicated to protecting both Waka, and civilians FROM Waka. We learn more about our main characters and the Gods, but as Waka gets kidnapped, she learns more about herself than she ever knew before. 4/5 cosmic horror stars.
[4.5/5] Another excellent and very engaging volume with exceptional artwork. I was a little confused but I think we are supposed to be at this time - Waka also expressed that she was confused. I found Obokawa’s actions and dialogue a bit all over the place (I am guessing that there is more to him than meets the eye) but the scene when Waka put her sweater around Scions’s waist, took her to the bathroom and gave her a sanitary pad was oh so realistic and oddly grounded amidst the gaslighting and chaos. The volume was a bit less methodical that the first in its story telling, which I am ok with but I hope it does not get more chaotic so it’s hard to follow.
On the one hand, it's SO intriguing and has the capacity to be something really special. But on the other, I am so confused for the majority of each volume so far. I'm hoping that this series is one that will "click" once there's more of it published to read in one go. The art style is really solid, the gods are creepy as fuck, and the characters are interesting.
I'll keep reading, but only from the library for now.
Definitely really like this volume!! I’m very interested in the characters and the story. I feel like volume two made me more intrigued in the story but I will say, I really like the characters the most in this story so far!! I wouldn’t really say what makes this story shine is the action or horror element but the characters and how funny the cats are drawn in this volume.
