Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Ace’s story was phenomenal. Loved his duels with Whitebeard and learning how he accepted him as a father figure. It was really touching and the art was beautiful!

The Nami vs. Kalifa fight was…certainly a choice. Would rather have had a different fight redrawn, but oh well.

It did make me tear up Ace and Whitebeard's relationship is SO good and absolutely lovely. Again, don't love the art style but there were some absolutely beautiful scenes.

When finally confronted with the man he wants to beat in order to earn respect in the pirate world, Ace failed.
A lot.
Longtime readers of the epic pirate tale that is "One Piece" will see the parallel between a certain Trafalgar Law and Roronoa Zoro as these two young'uns had to contend with LIVING with the seemingly undefeatable men they want to defeat. What makes Ace's story so different tho is that while he could never actually beat the old man, they both developed a mutual respect for each other that led them to becoming family. Heck, the sharing-cups ceremony had all the pomp of a wedding or a bar mitzvah (wondering if that's really how they do it in mafia/triad/bratva/yakuza circles when someone's formally inducted into the criminal empire...).
But what with it being a prequel, we know the fates of these two men and the broken pieces (ie former crewmates) left behind. Fascinatingly, Ace's first mate still uses his silly fire-powered paddleboat-surfboard, despite there being no more source of endless flames. I understand he uses it to remember him by, but the worst thing would be him getting stranded on the ocean if he runs out of flame dials that held Ace's fire.
...
THEN THE REST OF THE BOOK IS A HIGHLY EROTIC & SAPPHIC REDRAWN FIGHT BETWEEN NAMI & CALIFA! BLESS THIS ABSOLUTE MADMAN OF AN ARTIST FOR MAKING WHAT WAS ALREADY A PRETTY SEX-CHARGED FIGHT AMPED UP TO 11!

I think I liked this one a little less than the first volume?
First and foremost I hated the redraw of Nami's fight in Enies Lobby. I don't like the way this artist draws women, so... yeah.
I loved getting more details about Ace joining the Whitebeard pirates. It was awesome. Though some characters (Marco) looked awful in my opinion. But there were little scenes that we didn't see in the main manga that we got to see here and I loved that : more interactions between Ace and Tatch, Marco dropping a sleeping Ace on an enemy ship is a personal favorite (this is now totally canon to me), proper fights between Ace, Ace burning his jolly roger and Whitebeard and and the adoption ceremony. But this felt like even less of a complete story than the first volume. I don't think we learn anything new about any of the characters here? Whatever, it was a nice treat !

Boichi’s art is so incredible, I love how he uses the double page spreads and I specifically love the shots of the ships on the oceans with the sky in the background. I didn’t read the novel version so idk if this is a good adaptation but I really enjoyed it and even tho it’s noncanon, I’ll consider some parts canon! Definitely a nice read if you’re caught up with One Piece and want more material :)) However I still can’t get over how Boichi draws women; he needs to go to jail !

Ace vs Whitebeard was peak.

Deuce and the crew visiting Ace was :(

Horrendous amounts of fanservice in the Nami fight though.

This was a quick two-volume series, so I read it exceptionally fast. And it was really, good, too. The origin story for Ace was fascinating and emotional and I loved it. That being said, I found the bonus story in this particular collection, with Nami v. Kalifa to be over-the-top, gratuitous, and quite frankly "too much". It's an exciting battle in the anime, but this was hard to read.

For me, the bonus of the Nami vs Kalifa battle was an unnecessary edition. In the afterword, changes and cuts from the original novel of Ace’s story were mentioned as the adaptation to manga format was created. The bonus content could have been not included, if it would have given around 50 more pages to Ace’s story.

genuinely don't know how to rate this. the ace part was great as usual but the nami and califa fight ...jfc. i've watched over 1,000 episodes of one piece so i definitely have a tolerance for absolutely horrible anatomy on women at this point but this was something else. entirely unreadable. guess i'll say 5 stars for the first half and 1 star for the second half and split the difference at a 3.

I've had this for a while but finally read the second part of Ace’s Story, and... well.

Ace's Story is pretty good, even from the perspective of not really following One Piece, like... at ALL. The few things that call back to the main series don't really take away from the story if you don't get the references, I mean. I don't really understand the significance of , but it's clear they have a relationship in the main storyline that was forged here, with one last loose end tied up by the end of the story. Good stuff.

...then there's the Nami vs. Kalifa story afterward.

...which kills the good vibes by being complete and total fan service that doesn't have even the slightest bit to do with Ace's Story, just showcases how weird Boichi draws women... especially women while fan servicing. Wearing super-tight clothing. Covered in soap and/or water.

Does it tell a good story? NOPE. Just two women fighting, and FORTY-TWO PAGES OF IT. For ONE FIGHT. Even Ace's *ONE HUNDRED DUELS* didn't take this many pages!

No wait, I guess they could have. I didn't count. But still! 100 fights vs. ONE. And the 100 fights were broken up by other stuff!

On top of that, the afterword mentions regrets about having to cut scenes/characters from the light novel, and it's like... uh.......??? The "42 pages to rescue Robin" was more important? (Depends on who you ask, I guess.) Personally, I could have done without it.

Worth a read? If you're a fan of One Piece, sure! If you're a fan of Boichi suffering from Dr. STONE withdrawal... well, you're clearly not alone!

REVIEW

After losing against Whitebeard, Ace is basically a prisoner of his crew. He rejects the offer to join and continues fighting Whitebeard no matter how many times he loses. I loved seeing how Whitebeard just takes this in stride and lets Ace wear himself out with their fighting. I didn't have any particular feelings on Whitebeard, but it was touching that he knew Ace needed the fights to grow stronger and gain a purpose. He's from an older generation and also sick, but Whitebeard doesn't back from giving Ace what he needs. His crew is his family, but he's waiting for Ace to accept his offer on his own terms.

We also see Ace interact with other members of the crew. While we see his bond with the Masked Deuce as well, the focus of this volume is definitely on the Whitebeard pirates. The crew is amused at his dedication to fighting Whitebeard, but also begrudgingly accepts it. We see some of the other division commanders, such as Marco, Thatch and Teach. From the original saga, we already know everything that goes down with Thatch, Teach and the Darkness fruit later on, so it's bittersweet seeing Ace bond with Thatch. I loved the focus on found family in this volume, as Ace resents his biological father, Gold Roger, and how this connection makes him feel like a 'demon'. I already knew how his story ended, but seeing it again was heartbreaking. The ending made me quite emotional, as the Masked Deuce - who is an aspiring writer - is revealed to be the author of Ace's story, but refuses to sell it to anyone. Now only Luffy remains as Ace's legacy, the last embers of his flame.

Such a good two volumes this was, after reading what was relayed about certain parts having to be cut from the LN, I don't really have a view on that as I haven't read the LN. However, I can say the manga was so good.
The art was great, and the story had me remembering the moments from the anime!

The two chapters that were redone in this art style! The previous volumes Mihawk and Zoro were great, and reading those iconic lines zoro says just brought back so much nostalgia feels it was great!

Then we have the one in the second volume, the Nami Vs Kalifa fight, I was rather confused why this was the chosen one, out of all the iconic fights this wouldn't have been one that came to mind, HOWEVER I now know the genius of this choice, some of those panels were CRAZY and if you have read it you know what I mean and if you haven't, check it out!

DIOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

A great second and final volume to the manga version of Ace's story. This one really focuses on Ace's time aboard Whitebeard's ship as he attempts to defeat him. The art is amazing, and all of those large panels of the main characters posing or some of the fights that they have are quite jaw dropping. A lot of the background characters do suffer in their design; they pretty much look identical to other background characters that you would see in Boichi's other work, Dr. Stone. Regardless, it's a great addition to any fan of One Piece.

This one also includes Boichi's rendition of the Nami vs. Kalifa fight in Enies Lobby. I love all of Nami's fights (wish there could be more), so this was a great battle to witness once again.

A very short part two of the backstory of Ace, Luffy's brother, a manga based on the novels.

This is all about Ace and his battles with Whitebeard, as Ace is captured and taken care of by Whitebeard and his crew. Ace continuously challenges and loses to Whitebeard, but is growing in strength and wisdom. Will he eventually beat Whitebeard, or will his motivations and goals change?

Also includes a bonus re-imagination of a fight between Naomi and Kalifa from the One Piece Enies Lobby arc, which unfortunately I haven't read yet so it makes no sense to me, but the illustrations are quite gratuitous.

I wasn't a fan of Vol. 1 and I'm sad to say that I didn't like Vol. 2 for the same reasons.

However, the Bonus Chapter is just classic Boichi. He loves drawing chiseled men and incredible fight sequences, and he also likes to draw all his women as weird voluptuous alien baby heads and pose them in gratuitously ogle-y shots. Like, bro, just go off and draw r34 because that's clearly what you want to do.

5/5 🌟

Oh man, One Piece Ace Story pt. 2 was an absolute gut-punch but in the best way. 💔

Every panel perfectly captured Ace's reckless, unwavering spirit and finally explained the full weight of his actions at Marineford. Seeing Whitebeard's incredible kindness made that final arc even more devastating.

And Deuce?! So glad we got to see his life after Marineford. Manifesting a meet-up with Sabo or Luffy! 🙏

Me encantó.

Aces story is on full display here in a way it doesnt get to in the main story. this should be essential reading for any one piece enjoyer. ace and whitebeards fights shown on repeated full spreads is stunning. and dont get me started on the add on nami story, he went all out with it, holding nothing back, especially not the soap.
