Rate this book
When Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their debut album in 1976 it heralded the arrival of major new voice in rock.

Tracks such as 'Breakdown', 'Anything That's Rock'n'Roll' and most of all 'American Girl' became instant classics.

By the time his third album - Damm The Torpedoes - went platinum he had joined the all-time great song-writers.

In the years since then, Tom Petty and his collaborators have sold over 60 million albums world-wide, earning him a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

From early classics such as ‘Don’t Do Me Like That’ and ‘Here Comes The Girl’ to mid-career highlights such as ‘I Won’t Back Down’ and ‘Free Fallin’’ to the brilliant return to form on 'Mojo', his work has won countless awards and earned the respect of songwriters everywhere.

But which is his greatest song?

Jim Beviglia has picked the 100 finest songs from his range of albums, before choosing Petty’s greatest ever track.

All the classics are included - as well as a few others which may (or may not) surprise you.

‘Breakdown’ will take you back to all of Petty’s finest moments, and whether you are a hard-core fan or just a casual listener who wants to explore his music further, this list offers a wealth of information on Petty’s musical history, the differences between his albums, and an incisive analysis of his most celebrated tracks.

VERY well-written AND educational. I'm not a Petty fan, but I do love the songs with which I am familiar (Best.Roadtrip.Tunes.Ever.).

As I was reading, I pulled up some YouTubes for nostalgia's sake. At the last song (#1), I started on his greatest hits - and that song was the first one. It was pretty incredible listening to it as I was reading his conclusion.

While every list is subjective the author does a good job explaining why he has the songs ranked the way he does
