When an army vet-turned-safecracker is forcibly recruited to be part of a dangerous heist, she’ll need all her skills to get out alive in this fast-paced thriller perfect for fans of Jeffery Deaver and P. J. Tracy.
Nearly a decade after getting chased out of the Army for fighting back against abuse, Monna Locke’s skill and discretion have made her the go-to safecracker for Los Angeles clients who need vaults opened and no questions asked. When a lawyer hires her to retrieve a box from his client’s mansion, it seems like an easy payday–until she opens the safe and is immediately attacked by heavily-armed men.
Locke barely escapes and returns to her isolated cabin only to find the client waiting in her home, threatening what she holds most her son, Evan. After being knocked unconscious, she wakes up across the country, trapped in her own personal she and Evan will be held captive until she helps a seedy crew pull off a seemingly impossible heist.
Forced to practice breaking into the most impenetrable safe ever designed, Locke bides her time and eyes her escape routes. She knows there’s no way to finish the job she’s been forced into, but it’s either crack the lock, or lose everything.
QUICK TAKE: loved the concept, though drags a bit in the middle (reading about someone cracking a safe is just not that exciting). Overall an enjoyable action thriller!
Locked down due to COVID Locked in a house Locked in a warehouse Locked on a yacht Locked in a box A legally licensed safe-cracker …
This is a distinct action packed rollercoaster 🎢 of a story. I was definitely rooting for strong minded, Monna Locke. I’d like to see Monna Locke in more books with better plots.
Pretty solid action movie about an ex-military safecracker being kidnapped and forced to crack heavy-duty safes for terrorist baddies in order to protect their kid. But get this, it’s a woman! I actually thought Monna Locke (not her real name) was a great character, she’s 6”1’, she can climb a wall with her bare hands, and she unwillingly looks great in an evening gown. Monna is a tough, hot, safecracking tomboy whose surprisingly unfazed by multiple shoot-outs. Kind of cartoonish military thriller but the safecracking focus and tough female character make it pretty fun.
What a tremendous read! I enjoyed this book on so many levels, from the fascinating subject matter (who wouldn't want to go behind the scenes with a top safecracker on a dangerous mission?) to the fabulous characterization and nonstop action. I can't recommend The Lock Box highly enough.
Pretty fun thriller. I can't say I've ever read a book that had locks and safe cracking as a major driving plot point. For that you get some bonus points. I found that aspect fascinating.
The book was definitely action-packed, and I enjoyed that. It would make a fun mini series.
I found that the story lacked character development like I would like (more fleshed out motives)

Monna Locke isn’t even her real name—born Donna Maguire, she found the alias more fitting for a fully licensed safecracking expert. In Los Angeles, she is the go-to expert when discretion and skill are paramount. The Lock Box by Parker Adams, a riveting heist novel published on March 19, 2024, by Crooked Lane Books, entangles readers in its thrilling mystery, leaving no margin for error.
From a young age, Monna navigated life’s challenges with resilience. At six, she was nearly on her own, her single mother working tirelessly as a bartender. A life-altering knock on the door at sixteen revealed her mother’s death, yet, with her aunt’s support, she persevered. Excelling in the Army, her career was unjustly cut short due to her stand against harassment.
Her skills led her to a peculiar request from a local lawyer: break into a safe while its owner was away and retrieve its contents. Given the house codes, she executed the job flawlessly until an unexpected twist—armed men ambush, setting off a cinematic escape that showcases her prowess.
Fleeing with her son, Evan, to a secluded cabin, they encounter the lawyer—revealed as Huang, reminiscent of Oddjob from James Bond lore, flanked by henchmen Jack, King, and Queen. Evan’s life hangs in the balance, hinging on Monna’s acceptance of a daunting task: infiltrate the world’s largest yacht, the Helios, and secure an ancient artifact from an impregnable safe.
Adams crafts a masterful narrative, weaving suspense and intricate plotlines. The heist, fraught with challenges, unfolds through expertly choreographed action scenes, each twist and turn placing Monna in increasingly dire straits.

Blurb: When an army vet turned safecracker is forcibly recruited to be part of a dangerous heist, she’ll need all her skills to get out alive.
✨ My thoughts: This really was a fast paced read! I am actually surprised I was able to read it as quickly as I did. I loved the action and I loved the concept. It’s very different from anything I’ve ever read… I don’t think I’ve read any books that had a safecracker in it! I found it refreshing to read something different. If you’re looking for a different kind of thriller, this one is fast and fun! The Lock Box is out now!
If you want a fast-paced, adrenaline rushing good time, The Lock Box by Parker Adams is your book!
This unique, action-packed plot is well explained, not overly complicated, and continued to be easy to follow! I got addicted to the rush and was hooked from chapter one!
Main character Locke is a fierce and independent woman to root for, and although she got extremely lucky many times, it worked! Adams did an amazing job writing this female perspective; he also nailed the depiction of five year old Evan (Lego was a brilliant way to keep him out of the direct action)!
After reading the author information, I loved that Adams wove pieces of himself and his knowledge into this book!
I'd love to see The Lock Box on the big screen one day!
Thank you Kaye Publicy for the complimentary copy to read and review.
This book was a new to me author and while the genre was not, the subject matter was. There was so much that I didn't know about the inner workings of a safe, the combination pattern, the electronics and while it was interesting, it was a little bit boring at times...The author did give the reader a lot of mystery, a ton of WTF just happened moments and a few times where the reader wanted to reach through the pages of the book and help the main character out.
Monna and her "son" get put through the wringer in this one and the people that you thought you could trust were not the ones in the end. This book is a roller coaster ride that feels like it has more loops, curves, twists and turns than even the most complex coaster, but the reader will love the ride! Everything that you think is true or going to happen most likely won't so be prepared to be wowed!
A great book and an author that I will read again in the future! Add it to your TBR list - you won't be sorry!
The Lock Box is the first book by Joseph Reid, written using the penname of Parker Adams. Monna Lock is a professional Safe Cracker. Her skills are highly sought after as she is one of the best in the world in what she does. Since we are talking about people’s most prized possessions, Monna isn’t exactly famous because most of her work is done in secret. No one is going to advertise that they had to pay someone to get into their safe and recover their $10 Million diamond necklace.
Monna takes a simple job to recover an item from someone’s safe and is soon under attack by armed men who eventually abduct her and her son, taking them to a mysterious benefactor. The benefactor expects her to break into a safe that is virtually impregnable in exchange for their freedom. Monna is accompanied by several criminals with their own sordid pasts all motivated to make sure she completes the task. Unfortunately, nothing goes as planned and lives are changed forever.
The Lock Box was very intriguing. I learned a lot about safecracking. There was also a lot to learn about Monna and her time in the military. Though there were some good action moments, this book was more about survival, family, and self-reflection. It was overall a good read.

This is a really unique book in that a safecracker is the main character. While I was really excited to read this one, unfortunately, I was left wanting more. Monna is a badass woman and her skill set is truly remarkable. However, for me, it was A LOT of specific details about safecracking and not enough plot development. I wanted to know more about Huang and why he was doing what he was doing, since he drives so much of the story. The way Adams incorporates the early stages of the pandemic (the fear, restrictions and safety measures) into this book was a bit surreal but also very realistic. That aspect was really well-done. I definitely learned a lot about safecracking because of this book, and maybe, just maybe, if I really needed to, I’d now be able to open one! (Haha, just kidding!)
Thank you to Kaye Publicity, Crooked Lane Publishers and Penguin Random House for an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Monna Locke, a safecracker (legal and licensed, thank you very much), is hired to break into a safe belonging to someone incredibly wealthy. Not unusual for Locke – until four people in a plumbing van start shooting at her. Before she knows it, she’s the captive of a mysterious group who want her to crack the world’s most technologically advanced safe – in under ten minutes. And the consequences should she fail are dire.
Including so much about COVID precautions fixes the setting at a very specific time period, and including the unique circumstances of the pandemic in the setup for the heist was clever. It kept the book from feeling like it was set in the pandemic for no reason. When authors do that it just makes the story feel dated.
Unfortunately for this book, safecracking scenes are not the most riveting – at least not for me. The heist part was much more interesting. The dialogue didn’t quite seem realistic in some places. The writing in general is not the best, but overall the book is fine.
Representation: Asian character, LGBTQ+ characters(??? I can’t remember if this was explicit or something I read into it)
CW: domestic violence, mention of sexual assault, child in danger
I received an advance copy of this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The writing is compelling and the book is engaging. The characters are interesting too. Author has introduced me to Safecracker. I wasn’t aware of any such thing. There were twists and turns. This is a medium paced story and action packed thriller. Monna Locke’s character is so interesting and the story is multilayered. Monna is an army vet turned safecracker. She was recruited in a heist. Her job was dangerous. While she has a son too and her world turns upside down when she and Evan are held captive. She can either find her way by cracking the code or she is on verge of losing everything.
Thank you for the opportunity to preview The Lock Box. I love heist movies and books. This has some good parts in particular the heists. What I found was a lot of dialogue and not as fast paced as I like. That’s said it is good plot with a strong female lead. 3 stars
This can be an entertaining book, because the plot, the storytelling and the characters are OK. The main problem is the long descriptions, especially of things in the past. Another problem is a horrible situation with a child, and the implausible choice the main character makes.

Parker Adams has crafted a compelling narrative in “The Lock Box,” blending elements of mystery, intrigue, and emotional depth into a novel that captivates from the first page. The story revolves around the protagonist, Claire, who inherits an old, mysterious lock box from her estranged grandmother. As Claire delves into the secrets contained within, she unravels a web of long-hidden family mysteries that keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Adams excels in building suspense, drawing readers into Claire’s journey with vivid descriptions and a plot that unfolds with meticulous precision. The author’s ability to create an atmosphere of tension and anticipation is remarkable, making it difficult to put the book down. Each revelation about Claire’s family history is more shocking than the last, and the clever intertwining of past and present keeps the narrative dynamic and engaging.
The character development in “The Lock Box” is another highlight. Claire is a well-rounded, relatable protagonist whose determination and vulnerability make her a compelling lead. Supporting characters, from her quirky best friend to the enigmatic figures from her grandmother’s past, are equally well-drawn, adding depth and richness to the story.
However, one aspect of the narrative that falls short is the emotional arc concerning Claire’s worries about the child in her care. Adams aims to evoke a sense of profound concern and anxiety regarding this subplot, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark. The intended emotional resonance feels somewhat forced, and the connection between Claire’s maternal instincts and her overarching quest lacks the depth and authenticity seen in other parts of the story.
Despite this minor shortcoming, “The Lock Box” remains a thoroughly enjoyable read. Adams’ ability to weave a complex, suspenseful tale with relatable characters and unexpected twists far outweighs the less effective emotional subplot. For fans of mystery and suspense, “The Lock Box” is a must-read that showcases Parker Adams’ talent for storytelling and his knack for keeping readers hooked until the very end.
Intense, interesting, immersive story that drew me in, made me think, and wonder what I would have done in Monna’s situation.
What I liked: * Monna Locke: ex-army veteran, single parent, safe cracker, mostly raised herself, mother died when she was sixteen, taken in for a few years by a teacher, good friend, not a scholar, great with machines and mechanics, intriguing * Evan: Monna’s child, five, smart, loves Monna, protective, had a tough time in this book * Mule: high school shop teacher, good friend and mentor to Monna, a strong presence in her life * Constance-Miss C: retired librarian, Monna’s neighbor, sometimes caretaker of Evan – wondered what happened to her * The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * Learning a bit more about safes * Being able to dislike Huang and understand the thugs he had on hand for the heist though most were rather unsavory. * That the bad guys had some good qualities * That one of the bad guys was not as bad as the rest * The way it all played out and the conclusion of the story – did wonder if it might be a one and done or the beginning of a series * That I could see this as a movie
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * The ease with which Huang could manipulate others and the darkness and evil emanating from him * The oligarch on the yacht…and his henchmen
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Monna Locke is a former Army mechanic turned professional safecracker. She's hired to retrieve a box from a mansion's safe and barely escapes an attack by a gang of armed men. When she makes it home, her client is waiting and kidnaps Monna and her young son, Evan. To keep Evan alive, Monna is forced to work with her kidnappers on a heist to break into the most complicated safe ever designed.
This was a fast-paced, action-packed read! There were a few sections explaining how safes work that I thought were kind of boring because they took me out of the action, but they will likely be interesting to other readers with more interest than me in the technical side of things. Monna was a great character - I'd love to see future books with her as the MC, and I thought the gang of kidnappers was a pretty wild bunch that would make for a super fun movie cast. The jacket copy mentions this being a good fit for fans of Jeffrey Deaver, and I wholeheartedly agree!
* Thank you to Kaye Publicity and Crooked Lane Books for the finished copy to review. THE LOCK BOX publishes March 19, 2024.
The Lock Box has been languishing on my TBR for way too long. Once I started reading it, I wished I hadn’t let it sit there for so long because it is that good. Monna Locke is a certified legal safecracker. A man finds out about her talents kidnaps Monna and Evan, her son, to force her to open the seemingly un-breakable safe on an impossible timeline. She has two days to practice cracking a safe so she can do it real life in a matter of minutes. The story is nonstop action and you learn a little about safe cracking at the same time. I loved that the author included details behind safe cracking and the items that were up for grabs in the safe. I was drawn in by Monna, Queen and the other characters. The love between Monna and Evan is precious and shows just how well rounded the story is. It is has everything. It is the perfect read if you love books that will draw you into the story and you live it with the characters. Edge of your seat action mixed with careful plotting and an amazing action scene at the end of this book. This would make a perfect movie!
By and large, I liked this. Having an expert locksmith as the primary protagonist was an interesting choice, and though there were periodic lulls in the narrative, I thought Locke was a compelling enough character overall, and the bulk of the narrative being tense prelude to a heist made for some good drama as well. However, though several interesting characters were established, none of them were sufficiently fleshed out, and any build-up to their character arcs was unceremoniously snuffed out before any sense of closure or payoff could be properly achieved. The heist itself basically just turned into an action sequence that felt both overwhelming and unbelievable at the same time and ultimately left me feeling disappointed when the dust settled. There were the bones of something really promising, and I have no doubt this would thrive as a Hollywood blockbuster, but it took me too long to get invested, and the destination just didn't justify the journey once I had finally locked in.
𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: What a unique and interesting plot for a book! The MC, Monna Locke, is a licensed expert at cracking safes, but before she knows it she is going from a hired job to being held captive by a group of people who put her up for a dangerous mission. This book is fun, unique, and full of endless twists. I really enjoyed the protagonist and following along with her on her dangerous safe cracking missions. I found this book to be full of action, however the pace did seem to slow down a bit in the middle of the book when it seemed to drag at times. Overall, this was a different type of thriller/mystery that I really enjoyed having the opportunity to read-I loved the unique premise and the MC!

Non-stop thrill ride feels like a cliché, and I guess it is, but it’s a pretty good descriptor of The Lock Box. If I were Monna Lock, the protagonist of The Lock Box, I would have died of adrenaline poisoning somewhere around page 85. But that’s me. My life is pretty calm. I admire kick-ass women, as is evident by my Wonder Woman figurines and paraphernalia all over my office and car. Lock is smart and strong and unafraid, unconcerned with anything but getting the job done (and her son, Evan.) I am personally incapable of most of what Lock does, which makes me like her all the more. I don’t have her savant-like knowledge of the inner workings of locks (though I do know a whole lot more after having read this book, an interesting side-effect); I don’t have her powers of concentration or steady hands; I don’t have her nerves. But I truly enjoyed reading about her.
The Lock Box is pure, high-adrenaline, action-packed reading excitement that leaps off the page with razzle-dazzle.
Fans of action movies and spy heists are going to absolutely love this plot, which is focused on an army veteran turned locksmith whose kidnapped and tasked with breaking into the worlds most secure safe, and failure to succeed means certain death.
What follows is pure action - including some absolutely wild and incredibly crafted action sequences that are like the story coming to life off the page.
This book is just fun - fun to escape into and fun to read. Exactly the kind of story that is needed for our spring tbr’s as we get ready for an exciting summer!
Many thanks to @crookedlanebooks for the copy and to @parkeradamsbooks / @josephreidbooks for the brilliant reading action!
This is truly an exciting ride from start to finish. To avoid any spoilers I will be brief. The very best safe cracker on the planet, Mona Locke (yes, really) needs to get into something that could end up costing her everything. To avoid any spoilers this will be brief, but every single thing is more than the last. It is part miracle that Monna will survive her assigned task. Do not miss this book; a grand and weighty suspense with situations that led me to keep lights on and fingers crossed. I absolutely recommend this book to everyone. This is a story you will not find in copycat form - this is a great original book. My thanks to the Author, and his publisher, for an advance copy, of the book for me to read and review. Also, thank you to the folks at Crooked Lane Publishers. I was not able to get this book via NetGalley.
Thank you to my partners, Kaye Publicity and Crooked Lane Books, and the author. I appreciate the signed and gifted hardcover. I am leaving this review voluntarily!
1. 𝐈𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 - Wow. Right outta the gates this one will have you hanging on for dear life. What seems to be a run-of-the-mill job turns out to be the beginning of some high-octane events that will keep the pages flying through your fingers.
2. 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 - There would be no better way to coerce a woman to do your bidding than by threatening harm to her child. I could feel the visceral fear emanating from Locke every step of the way. And it only gets worse as the story goes on!
3. 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 - Who is the person that Locke can trust? Just when I thought she had found her person, the rug was pulled out from under her….more times than I could count!
4. 𝐄𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞 - The extent to which Locke’s captors went to pull off this heist was remarkable. And it doesn’t even become completely apparent until they are in the heat of the moment.
5. 𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐭 - There truly wasn’t a moment when I wasn’t on the edge of my seat…from start to finish. I felt like I was watching a movie like Ocean’s Eleven in my mind. I think we just might be seeing this as a movie sometime in the future!
What an adrenaline rush. Monna Locke is a safe cracker and an expert in all the techniques. She also has a young son she has to protect. A man kidnaps her and the only way she can keep her kidnapper from killing her son is to crack a safe with priceless relics inside. As if this isn’t enough, the safe is on a huge yacht in the ocean, and the yacht is teeming with guards. Parker Adams has great knowledge of safecracking and I learned a great deal. His sympathetic heroine is also surrounded by interesting characters. The tension and action are constant. Virtually every chapter ends with pulse-pounding danger. You won’t be able to put this one down.
Not more than a 2.5-the plot was thin. Liscensed Safecracker Monna has a requested to access a safe in an empty home and retrieve a box for the owner. Somehow, you know it's going to go bad. Monna is attacked/hunted before even leaving the house. She gets away (or so she thought) but upon arrival home, finds them in her house with her son.
They are kidnapped and held until Monna trains to open an unopenable safe, then cracks the same model safe on a mega-yacht. There are a few unanswered questions- what happened to her babysitter/neighbor/ who was really after the items in the safe and why?
This is a really great, fast-paced read with an exciting plot and very cool female protagonist. Lots of heist-thriller and on-the-run action as Monna Locke (how cool is that name?!?) attempts to extricate herself from what looked like an easy score and protect her family. Loved this character's backstory and am fascinated by her craft, which I'd have no way of knowing about if not for this book. The action jumps off the pages of this one; highly recommend!
This new offering from Parker Adams is a high-energy, riveting thriller featuring a badass female lead in Monna Locke. She’s an ex-military safe cracker who is the go-to resource for clients that need safes opened and secrets protected. But when things go sideways during a job, she has to rely on her smarts, grit, and mama bear instincts to save her son and herself. I heartily enjoyed this wild ride and can’t wait for more Monna stories!
