Rate this book
The Crosses -- renowned Professor of the Occult Simon and irrepressible Elizabeth -- set off on their latest time traveling adventure. Leaving Jack behind to nurse his broken heart, the couple travels to 1852 Natchez, Mississippi to help the next person on grandfather Sebastian's list, Mary Stewart. There's just one problem. Little Mary Stewart, just 8 years old, died two days ago.

Mary's spirit cannot rest until Simon and Elizabeth solve the mystery of both her life and death. But Mary cannot speak, and there are those who are willing to kill to keep the past buried.

Simon and Elizabeth discover first-hand that dark secrets in the Antebellum South hide pasts murkier than the river bottom and twice as dangerous.

Full disclosure: I was offered an ARC of the book and asked to review it, though that in no way has influenced my opinions. I love these books- the character and plot development, the feeling of visiting different times and places, all of it. This book delved a little more deeply into the paranormal (though, like the first, managed to do it without being over-the-top and ham-handed), and I was happy to see more of Simon in this book. Martin's done a good job of keeping Simon and Elizabeth's relationship developing, but I'll admit to missing some of the spark from the first few books. The author also did a good job touching on some of the and unavoidable sadder aspects of history, such as slavery- a difficult topic to handle sensitively without weighing the story down.

I look forward to these books and hope to see more!

I adore the Out of Time series. Each book pulls me in deeper and deeper and I've read them many times. Thursday's Child is by far the meatiest and most fully developed in the series. I absolutely hated to see it end because it is such a terrific story. Simon shines in Thursday's Child. He has finally hit his stride and while Elizabeth is still as gung ho as ever, this adventure opens her eyes to things she hasn't considered. The ending scenes made me a little teary and were definitely satisfying. The topic of slavery is gracefully handled, the main mystery is sensitively written, and the supporting cast and descriptions are as vibrant as ever. And once again she's managed to slip some history lessons in without me noticing.

Am anxiously awaiting the NEXT in the series!

This is a must-read! Monique Martin has excelled in this newest book in her "Out Of Time" series.
Simon and Elizabeth time travel to the South and are exposed to the cultural divisions of that era.
"Thursday's Child" will have you smiling and crying with the characters while feeling sorry for Elizabeth (she's in a corset again!)
I thoroughly enjoyed this journey with Simon and Elizabeth.

A detailed different kind of story

I am a fairly new reader of Monique Martin books. This is about the 4th one I have read…did not pay attention to the fact that this was a series (my bad) so I have not read these in order. However, the one thing I have realized is they really do not “have to be” read in order. (It just makes more sense when you do.) However, I feel each one stands alone quite well.

As I became aware it is a series, I went back to earlier books to see the “tie ins and former cliff hangers (if there was one). Her characters are rich…they are “growing”. She makes the reader feel as if you personally know these characters.

One of the things I TRULY appreciate about her writing is she incorporates the love the Crosses have for each other so there is no doubt there is intense passion in their marriage but she uses the old-fashioned technique of “fade to black” around their love scenes. Just enough, but never over the top. Since I do not read the “romance” genre of books, I love that. History, mystery, time travel are all my favorite themes and Ms. Martin delivers on each of those in spades.

I rarely can put her books down until I have finished the one I am reading…everything else becomes an interruption until I have finished. This one, thus far is my favorite. All the emotions one can experience are there…(semi-spoilers follow..) Wonder…it is another place in time…observation…you feel the heat in Mississippi. Fear…could someone harm a child on purpose. Revulsion; slaves were not treated as human. Love; the Crosses truly love each other. Respect; for other peoples feelings even when they are not sure they should. Anger, hostility, futility and worry. This was a roller coaster of all those feelings and more. Moreover, often nothing is what it seems.

If you enjoy history, mystery, the occult, and a real “who done it-and why- this is the book for you!

On to the next one; in order this time!

I found this book to be more in keeping with the first book. The romance between Simon and Elizabeth was continuing. They were traveling through time to fulfill the items on Simon's grandfather's list, and the paranormal was once again a major theme in the story. This story took place in the 1858 South. There were issues regarding slavery, mainly because Simon and Elizabeth treated the slaves as modern day human beings, rather than slaves. The story brought up changes in dress, behavior, marriage, etc. that have undergone changes with the passage of time. The book continues to be a love story, as well as, a mystery and a time travel story. Very enjoyable!

Not sure if these are shorter or if they just read fast. One of the drawbacks of ebooks. In any case, another good story in this different time travel series. This time Simon and Elizabeth travel to Natchez Mississippi pre Civil war to help a small child only to find she’s already dead. They must ingratiate themselves with the locals to find out the truth behind her death. Good story, although it’s not clear how it fits into the whole “threatening evil entity” theme.

Almost from the start I struggled with Thursday's Child. I am not sure if it was the time period itself that was disinteresting, but I found myself not really caring. Much like the first two books in the series, the story seemed to drag on needlessly and reserved the action for the latter part of the book. after the last two books, this was an disappointing read.

I am really enjoying this series. Time travel with so much more thrown in. I like that they travel to the past instead of the future because I can relate. It’s more like historical fiction. This book was set in Missippi and Elizabeth had to put aside her feelings about people (slaves) being exploited in order to blend in. Simon is so good with balancing her.

The story was very interesting, but the plot wasn’t fast-paced like the others, with danger lurking around every corner. I think that’s what makes it the most exciting. Loved the secondary characters. Catherine, Rose, and Eli are amazing.

Simon and Elizabeth working on their list from his grandfather. A child in the Deep South in 1852 needs their help. I enjoy the time travel and the mystery and suspense.

Monique Martin's 'Out of Time' series continues with a fascinating mystery in Book Five, Thursday's Child. The particularly unique thing with this series is that each story is wonderfully unique and very enjoyable.
This outing finds Simon and Elizabeth returning to pre-civil war America, where they are trying to save a young girl. The biggest problem? She died two days before their arrival.
What follows is a fascinating adventure in the golden years of Southern life, with Elizabeth and Simon both struggling to hold their tongues as they come across the atrocities of slavery and the 'normality' of it in the time they are visiting.
Simon and Elizabeth struggle to figure out the mystery of why Simon's Grandfather had this particular case on his list and their dynamic as they sort through the clues is once again, completely engaging and thoroughly enjoyable. This is a well-written and thoroughly rounded characterization of hero and heroine and ultimately, Elizabeth and Simon come across as completely believable, people who are flawed and have their issues, but ultimately they are aware of those flaws and try hard to overcome them.
I was disappointed to get to the end of this book, mainly because I now have to wait for Monique Martin to produce another book in this excellent series.

I was so happy about this one. I almost only gave 4 stars based on the lack of Jack in this one, but the story was just so good that I stuck with 5. I loved how Simon and Elizabeth reacted to the status quo in this one. It made me wonder how I would react back in the days of slavery. The lack of standing that women had would be difficult to get used to as well.

This book had the best secondary characters of them all so far. I liked that Simon and Elizabeth have gotten so comfortable and familiar that they are no longer keeping things from each other to protect each other. I enjoy that their relationship is growing like a real one does, and that they learn from their mistakes.

I figured out the ending early, and that was a bit of a disappointment, but I still really enjoyed this book beginning to end.

This book in this series was by far my favorite! I already loved the characters Simon and Elizabeth and I felt so drawn into these new characters that I could imagine myself in Natchez. The descriptions and the character developments are amazing. I loved all the plot twists and all the different scenerios that could have been. Adding the element of children made it so much more personal.
It is amazing to me how you can put two total strangers in a totally random time period and they can become the greatest of friends with whoever they need to be to help them, and it seems effortless. Its not fake or cheesy but you create genuine friendships in these characters.
Great book and fun series. Can't wait for the next one!

Once again blown away by Monique Martin! Love love love Simon and Elizabeth, ( how could you not) this book had more of the supernatural and a bit of the ghost whisperer but it wasn't creepy, except maybe the end but I won't spoil it! The story has you trying to guess the outcome, and in classic Monique Martin style, once you think you got it, a new twist shows you that you don't ! Was a little sad there was not a lot of Jack in this one but it makes me look forward to what may be coming. This book also left you with a serious cliffhanger that has me dying for the next installment! Can't wait!!! This book was sent to me to review and I was not disappointed at all...great story! Keep them coming Ms. Martin ....

To date this has been one of my favorites in this series. Perhaps it's a happy ending for a child already dead or the fact that fate and destiny win out in the end....I'm not really sure. The story takes place in one of the oldest cities in the South...1852 Natchez, Mississippi. Ms Martin's attention to detail is like getting a history lesson and never knowing it. Through out the books our main characters (they left Jack at home) Simon & Elizabeth Cross, have continued to grow. Not just within theirselves but also as a couple. Simon's compassion for a little 8 year old child will melt your heart and the loss of their child in the future pulls at your heart strings. Can't wait to see where their next adventure takes us.

Really enjoyed the book. I like the fact that not a page in the book is wasted with pointless information nothing to do with the story. I like it that Elizabeth and Simon have their mission and all they want to do is see the mission through (no spoilers) which they do. I also liked how even being told that they have a grim event occurring in their future they still focus on their mission. Can't wait to Read book six of the series

Another time travel adventure, this time to mid 1800s Natchez, where Simon and Elizabeth have to solve the case of a child that has died just before their arrival. Is it murder and if so, who did it? They have the ghost of the child that appears now and then but isn't able to help them overmuch. They need to figure out what happened so that her spirit can be at peace. Bad guys, danger, good people, and a happy ending of course.

Set in the Pre-Civil War Mississippi era, this book just drips with the romantic south. Just be warned that those drips come with the oily stain of slavery and other unsavory behaviors.

Both Simon and Elizabeth continue to be good characters and the new side characters are just as, if not more, interesting. Strange visions lead to stranger events and not everything can be explained. Well written with a solid plot, these books continue to entertain.

I just can't get enough of these books!
This was #5 in a 6 part series, although there may be more books coming. This one took place in the antebellum south. Mississippi to be exact.

A historical fiction/time travel/murder/ghost mystery. And tons of fun. I hope this author keeps 'em coming.

Started Book number 6 last night, immediately after finishing this one.
