NYC Confidential #3

Whatever It Takes

Rate this book
Scandal-wracked playboy, Charlie Marchetti, arrives in New York two days before his brother's wedding, determined to prove he's a reformed man, reliable, responsible and—yeah, all those good 'R' adjectives. No trouble, no drama and no mistakes. Ah, the best laid plans...

First, the airline lost his luggage. Second, all five of his ex-wives are coming to the wedding, probably just to remind Charlie he's an ass who takes nothing seriously and will die alone and unloved. Oh, and third, he has no date for the wedding.

Then he meets Persey Chancellor at lost luggage. Within minutes she's summed him up as a "bastard" and a "pervert". Damn it, but he's intrigued. With gum in her hair and tattoos up her arm, this uninhibited, potty-mouthed stranger could be his shocking trump card—an ultimate prank on the ex-wives.

Can the man dubbed "Charming Charlie" by the paparazzi, convince Persey to spend two days posing as his unlikely girlfriend? Hey, he'll do whatever it takes. But the last laugh might just be on him.

I am so lucky to have discovered Cat Kelly’s work here on our website. With each book I read I find myself falling a little more in love with her writing and I’m afraid if I ever meet her I might embarrass us both. Whatever It Takes is the story of two very different people who meet by accident and once they do it becomes evident they complete each other. It is crazy, infuriating, surprising, raw, and so damn sexy and I found it impossible to put down.

Cesare “Charlie” Marchetti is known as the family playboy, wild child, and screw up. Arriving in New York for his brother’s wedding, he discovers his luggage didn’t make it and is now kicking himself for not planning better. Determined to show everyone he’s making changes and becoming more responsible, he finds himself helping a young woman with the same problem.

Persey Chancellor is in New York to disappear, unfortunately her luggage is lost and she realizes she has little cash and his credit card is missing. When a man offers to help her she’s wary but given her circumstances she takes him up on his hospitality but not without setting him straight about what won’t happen between them.

In my head I see this couple as Mr. GQ meets the late Amy Winehouse; complete opposites in appearance, life styles, and where they are in life. I love Persey’s balls to the wall attitude and straight talk. She’s not afraid to speak or mind or let you know exactly what she’s thinking. The very polished and privileged Charlie is taken aback by her in your face attitude and her crude language but he also is very drawn to her in a way he’s never been drawn to a woman before not even his six, yes SIX ex-wives.

Together these two are very entertaining and their intimate scenes are wild and uninhibited but at the same time you get the feeling these two are experiencing way more than they ever thought possible with one another. Their conversations run the gambit from hilarious to serious and the amount of personal information they share helps us understand them both better. Persey however hides a big part of her life from Charlie which leaves him blindsided and he keeps some information from her which sets her off and threatens what they’ve built.

This is one of those books that I want to go on and on about because I enjoyed it that much but I won’t because I want you to read it. I love couples who seem like they have nothing in common but find they are way more alike than anyone ever thought possible. Despite their 14 year age difference, Persey’s lived a very full and mature life for someone her age making her seem much older than her physical age.
Charlie on the other hand being a Peter Pan type of guy seems young for his age which is why I think they work so well for each other. I’m a lover of epilogues and the one in this book just made my week; it was sweet, sexy, and so them! Cat Kelly is proving to be one of those authors whose work I can’t pass by; I love her snark, her humor, and man does she write sex well!

........................ I love the bantering between characters; they connect well with each other, and come across very real. We get good back stories that lead them to this point and we get an excellent epilogue to finish us off..............This book is definitely worth a read!
