Tyler Locke #4

The Loch Ness Legacy

Rate this book
During a trek to Loch Ness, Scotland, a young Charles Darwin encounters a mysterious and terrifying creature that provides a spark for his evolutionary theory.

Almost two hundred years later and across the Channel in Paris, the Eiffel Tower is under attack. Only through detective work, intuition, and a judicious application of high-tech weaponry does former Army combat engineer Tyler Locke prevent a massacre.

What Tyler doesn't know is that the assault is just the beginning of a conspiracy so dark that it not only threatens the lives of those he loves, but could also ignite World War III. Racing against time to uncover Darwin's centuries-old secret, he must solve a series of cryptic clues to find a manuscript that has been so cleverly hidden it hasn't been seen since the Victorian age.

Tyler's quest takes him from the bustling tourist hotspots of Seattle to the splendor of Versailles to the remote Highlands of Scotland in a battle to reveal the shocking truth behind the legend of the Loch Ness monster.

Morrison returns to redeem himself with an interesting and thought-provoking novel. What appears to be silly and surely fluff on the surface (pardon the pun) ends up being a highly energetic thriller that keeps the reader's attention from beginning to end. What does the Loch Ness Monster have in common with the Nazis? How can this beast of the sea be the key to the world's destruction and what did Darwin discover off the coast of Scotland that Hitler demanded to have within his clutches? After a major explosion in Paris rocks the Arab world, where its leaders are meeting. Tyler Locke is sent in to deal with the fallout, especially when one of his archnemeses is behind it all. And when that turns out tragically, how will Locke deal with the promise to seek vengeance for his killing of this evil criminal? Showing a little more about the Locke family and a great deal more about the abilities Locke will go to protect all that is sacred to him, Morrison presents this tale that is sure to have people flocking to their bookseller (and travel agent to get over to Loch Ness)!

Morrison made quite the turnaround from some of his less than stellar work in the past. While I was prepared to toss in the towel, I am glad I had a spot in my reading cycle to squeeze this one in. With a strong story line and decent character development, Morrison brings the story to life and keeps from getting too hokey. A great thriller sure to impress the Morrison fan and newby alike.

Kudos Mr. Morrison as you return to my good books. What's next on your list of off the wall thrillers?

Much better than the previous two Tyler Locke books. Tyler and his best friend and aide de camp Grant Westfield, and Brielle Cohen from the Israeli Defense Forces are in France, ostensibly to protect Muslim leaders at a closing dinner at the Eiffel Tower, and thwart an attempt to firebomb the restaurant by a white supremacist group, led by Carl Zim. Everything seems OK until the leaders start dying from accelerated aging.

Tyler had testified against Carl's brother, Victor, at a murder trial. Victor now serving a lengthy sentence in a California prison asks to see Locke, threatens his sister, and proceeds to execute a brilliant escape. Tyler's sister is a specialized zoologist, and her interest in the Loch Ness monster, turns out to be relevant to stopping the death of the Muslim leaders, preventing war in the Middle East, and saving life.

Some of the shenanigans at European museums were fun as was the final showdown in Scotland.

There are author's names that instantly come to mind when one discusses the best writing throughout time. Boyd Morrison's name is rapidly ascending. In our lifetime his name will be as widely mentioned as anyone and future generations will be reading his works and talking about him along with the greats from many eras.

The Loch Ness Legacy proves once and for all that the Loch Ness Monster is real and is alive. OK, maybe it's only for the all too short time one spends in the book, but for the time you are swept into the story it is absolutely real and alive.

This book follows Boyd's usual pattern of grabbing you immediately and locking you in for an E-ticket ride all the way to the last word. If all you want to do is coast along, this won't be the best possible book for you. This thing moves. Oh, you get to catch your breath a very little bit here and there but for the most part it's flank speed the whole way through.

Definitely a must read. This is an author you can't afford to ignore. His works are as good as anything you can find and better than most anything you'll ever read.

What can I say, Tyler Locke amuses me to no end. He is such an engineer. His Leatherman (an awesome tool)is his best friend. More than even Grant, I suspect.

As I've said in previous reviews of the series, I come from a family of engineers and they hold a special place in my heart. Their way of using words is unique.

A great example in this book is Tyler talking about his sister's boyfriend "keeping her at arm's length." To most of us, I think, that would mean the boyfriend was somehow pushing her away. But not Tyler Locke. Arm's length is a measurement. And not a particularly big one. I had to read the passage twice, but came away with the meaning that the boyfriend was actually keeping her close, because it's a measurement that is fairly close.

This series is fun.

What happens when you mix Charles Darwin, the Loch Ness monster, a potential Mideast war, a poison, good guys and gals, bad guys and a gal, and an adventure combining all of them into one book? Lots of exciting action in several different countries combine all of these into a gripping story. My only complaint is that there is too much action and too many events that sometimes seem to get in the way of the story. Having already read Mr. Morrison's "Roswell Conspiracy," I know that his plots often seem to connect to things that might not be factual; but I think I liked the Roswell tale better than this one. Nevertheless, it was a fun read for me.

I've enjoyed some of Morrison's earlier books, but this one didn't work for me. The combination of Loch Ness monster and Nazi chemical weapon is just too far-fetched to pull off.

Also, apart from the opening sequence on the Eiffel Tower, the action scenes fell flat. There just isn't the same kind of tension as there was in Rogue Wave and I found my interest waning two thirds of the way through.

Another issue is the main character, Tyler Locke. This is the third book featuring him that I've read, and I feel like he's little more than a cardboard cutout. There just isn't much character development to be had - and to be fair, these kinds of novels rarely go for that anyway.

Boyd is becoming one of favorite authors and this forth installment see's Tyler & Grant track down the Loch Ness Monster...yep! sound daft....but Boyd adds his own unique style mixing fact and fiction backed-up with some great research (especially the descriptions of the locations) that makes the whole adventure seem plausible...its a real page turner that keeps you interested from the first to the last page with a strong running theme throughout.

So grab your flippers and snorkel and drive in :)

Why didn't I read the description before I acquired this book? Most definitely not my cuppa.

A mysterious Nazi weapon, a madman bent on revenge and destruction and a legendary monster. All these things combine to create a fast paced thriller. A thriller that, at times I thought was a little ridiculous in its premise, but one that came together quite well in the end.

While not on the same level as a Rollins thriller, in terms of science, it overall proved to be highly entertaining. The characters were quite engaging, and the villains quite horrible. Tyler, Alexa and Grant were my three favorites. I loved how Alexa was the one with the expertise, she proved to be instrumental in solving the puzzle.

Nessie unfortunately did not have a very big part, which considering the title and premise was a let down. I really hoped it would have been more prominent. In terms of the ending though it was satisfying.

A great book to while away a few afternoons.

Tyler and Grant barely stop an attack during a Muslim Nation Summit party on the Eiffel Tower. Then they must race time when an old enemy uses an old Nazi weapon to exact revenge against everybody there, including Grant. And somehow the Lock Ness Monster is involved.

I loved reading about the Loch Ness ‘monster’ and am glad it turned out alright for him.

Footnote: 1) One thing people ignore is that Evolution is a ‘theory’. Something that has NOT been proven. And all that “empirical” evidence? All the physical ‘evidence’ can go either way. And if you look more deeply into it it’s all based on very weak theories of its own and/or has very poor provenance. I’d rather trust in my faith than what somebody said somebody said somebody saw.

Fave scenes: Deadeye & Mayfly, Alexa & Miles’s bet, opening the hidden vault and strong Locke stubbornness.

Absolutely ridiculous piece of holiday nonsense reading. The author states that there are "a few things that surely seemed made up, but it's likely they're actually real or at least based on reality." The entire storyline and all the characters are so incredibly over-the-top and completely unbelievable. The goodies are just so buff, cool and good and the baddies are nasty, evil fascists - like James Bond, Die Hard and the Da Vinci Code turned up to eleventy-stupid! I'm not saying that it wasn't entertaining but really, wow, what a load of absolute absurdity!

Boyd has something of a gift in writing fast paced thrillers that aren't extremely involved. With short chapters and a lot of jumping around he gets the characters where they need to be. The characterisation is nice and the story interesting and it's a quick "bathroom" read. Entertaining but not too challenging.

A great read!

As with all books by Morrison, this book is full of intrigue. He chooses something we’ve all heard about and weaves an exciting plot. I love that he does an afterward and describes what is fact, what could be and what is on the brink in science. A must read.

While I enjoyed the book, it took me longer to get through than normal. May have been caused by our current transition process. Interestingly every time I picked it back up, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but couldn’t keep reading long.

I didn't like this as much as I liked The Noah's Ark Quest (or even The Catalyst) by the same author. It has all the right ingredients for a fantastical action thriller - fights, chases, puzzles, gadgets, historical references - but despite this, it failed to hook me.

A little Darwin, a little Scotland and Loch Ness, a lot of completely unrealistic globe-trotting/fight scenes/drama, all the women are hot and have PhDs, and the men are buff and manly. What’s not to love about a little ridiculously implausible fantasy now and then?

In Search of Nessie

Great action adventure thriller full of terrorists, old Nazi weapons, middle east on the brink of war, and the hunt for the Loch Ness Monster make for an awesome read on the order of Clive Cussler's books. Highly recommended!

More about bombings, poisoning and fighting than about loch ness. Only really interesting part for me was the possibility of a connection between Charles Darwin and the discovery of the Loch Ness monster, which actually turned out to only be talked about at the end of the book.

Strong characters and a good plot, along with subplots, kept me going through the story. I like stories about Loch Ness to see how an author works in the "monster"and how the "monster acts during the stories.

This is the best Tyler Locke adventure I have read yet!! However, I am not reading them in order, so who knows?! I really appreciate how clean these thrillers are! Plenty of action and romance without language distractions.
