Awwwww, this book! My sweet God, this book was great!
500 Miles tells us the story of Mark & Jase. This is the blurb so you can have an idea because I don't really want to spoil anything for you guys:

Even though my amiga Bev says she doesn't love 500 Miles by The Proclaimers, I absolutely LOVE that song and it was great listening to this while reading this short story.
So, do you want to know if Mark is able to open his heart to Jase again? Trust me, you do want to know because it will be so worth it. You are going to love this story. Mark is so lovable and so is Jase but I felt a special connection with Mark. I totally understood all his reactions, I wanted to hug him and tell him everything was going to be fine. And then Jase... OMG Jase, I love you! That is all...
I sure will be reading more from this author. I loved the characters, the writing style and I am happy because this book put a huge smile on my face.

Parker Williams is definitely an author to watch out for... I LOVED THIS!!!

Parker Williams in his debut as an author has delivered a heart warming and stunningly beautiful tale that will have you grabbing for the tissues. I am super excited about this book and the promise of more to come from this talented author who fills this novella with friendship, love, despair, strength, courage and hope. We see two young men selflessly give their hearts and prove that in the end love really does conquer all… even when their lives are encompassed by the cruelties of war… along with the physical and psychological impact it has on those at home and abroad.
Mark at the age of 14 falls for his brothers best friend Jase. He was kind to him and treated him with respect… and not like his friends kid brother, which at 14 years of age is definitely something you want to happy dance about, especially when the boy in question is 17 and you have the whole hero worship going on and like every other teenager who gets those starry eyes and tummy flutters… it’s love and his whole world revolves around Jase.
It is narrated by Mark and spans a few years and as readers we see how cleverly Parker Williams matures Mark’s voice and emotions as he grows, it’s not complicated or poetic in it’s delivery, what we do have are the feelings of a boy at the stage in his life when everything seems so simple and uncomplicated… you fall in love and that feeling in all it’s intensity is forever… simple!!! Until said object of affection signs up to go to Afghanistan with Mark’s brother and the feeling of being abandoned becomes overwhelming. For a while Jase sends him tapes and Mark sends letters and care parcels and all is right with the world. When Mark receives a tape, not from Jase but his brother Eric, trying very delicately to inform him that Jase had met a girl and intends to marry… to a 15 year old boy in love the bottom pretty much falls out of your world, and at that age it’s hard to see the bigger picture… when promises are made, they are treasured and dear, so when Jase told him “I will walk all the way home if I have to, Mark. We’re coming back for you, I promise” He believed him!
When I finished reading 500 Miles, it gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling and made me feel good about the world, and how these two boys, regardless of what life had thrown at them, Mark and Jase overcame all the heartache and pain, and not for a moment did their love wane… they were soul mates and nothing, not even the tragedies that war brings could come between them.
Parker Williams, certainly has a huge vote of confidence from me and I am very much looking forward to what the delightful man will bring us next… actually, I can’t wait, so Mr Williams you had best get a wriggle on!!

So...when you ask me what I like in a story, the first thing that grabs me is a broken man. Then, you bring in a character who understands him, holds him to his heart and heals him.
You had me at hello.
This is a beautifully written story. Short, oh-so-sweet, with the right balance of angst and happiness. I do love me a man who knows what he wants and goes after it. Even if it hurts to do so.
Parker Williams provided me with an advance reviewer's copy with the proviso I gave him an honest review. Here's the best recommendation I can make; I will be buying a copy the day it comes out.

Wow.
Ok…where to start. My heart feels…full.
“500 Miles” was sweet and emotional. It touched on young infatuation, families left behind when service men/women leave for war, the toll of war on those that return, and the healing that fierce commitment between 2 people in love can bring. I found it charming.
Because of the short length, there were parts that were rushed and the cadence of the story felt off at times (too much time spent on seemingly more insignificant parts and not enough time spent on really important parts) The reunion after 4 years, especially, could have taken a bit more care in playing itself out.
However, despite that, the characters were so lovable and the story itself powerful.

A great little story, really enjoyed it. 4 stars and a big
The story is part of an anthology entitled 'An MLR Mixed Tape', and is set before DADT was repealed, and although it's named after a song I absolutely detested, I won't hold that against it!!
This is the tale of Mark, who at 14 is well aware that he's in love
with Jase, best friend of his elder brother Eric. Jase has always included Mark in everything he does with Eric, treating Mark as his younger brother too, so when Eric and Jase come home one day and announce that they are joining the army, Mark is heartbroken. The boys are sent away for training and then to Kuwait, and Mark decides to 'man up' and sends them comic books, sweets, all sorts of things to remind them of home (and I suspect of him); in return they send Mark cassette tapes telling him what they've been doing within reason, thanking him for his gifts, and on one particular birthday, getting the rest of the guys in the squad to sing happy birthday to him...much as he likes hearing his brother's voice, Mark is really only interested in Jase and can't wait for him to come home....time passes.Mark is completely gutted one day when he gets a tape from Jase telling him that he is seeing a girl, and that he thinks she's 'the one'!! Mark has been saving himself for Jase, he's had boyfriends cos his parents are cool with him being gay, but he's never gone beyond a few kisses, so that's it as far as Mark is concerned, he still speaks to his brother and Jase, but now keeps them pretty much at arm's length. One day he gets a phone call from Eric....what that phone call reveals and where this leaves things with Jase is for you dear reader to find out. Definitely recommend.

I have a huge soft spot for the wounded character, the one who thinks he's doing the right thing for everyone, who's selfless even though what he really needs is to be loved. So this story pushed all my buttons in that regard. I loved Jase. I wanted to beat him, but I understood him. And Mark is fun and gutsy and fights for what he wants. It was fun and hot and I was lucky enough to score the advance copy. Make sure to pick this one up.

I didn’t particularly like it. I guess my main problem was that neither the story nor the author’s voice spoke to me. Also, I really didn’t like Mark. He is a selfish and self-righteous little prick. Though I liked Jase.
Jase comes home Eric and Mark go There is a shouting match between Eric and Jase Seriously? Um…as if! It was too rushed, not really well-thought-out. I'm the reader and I felt like the saying “all dressed up and nowhere to go.” Sorry, it didn’t do it for me. The part before Eric and Jase went to Kuwait felt better developed than the rest of the story. And the icing on the cake was NOT. The author crammed way too much into this extremely short story and the execution did not appeal to me. Given the story's shortness I found it absolutely ridiculous and annoying that it ended at 80 %!!!
What I really liked were Jase’s messages . Whatever. Next book please.
P.S. I sent this little book back on its way to Amazon...
P.P.S. I decided to read another novella by Lanyon. He is the go-to author when I want to read a great little story. Also, he is less melodramatic and less mushy/gooey.

It doesn't matter how short this story is, its just a joy to read. I'm not rehashing the story because others have done it really well and the blurb is pretty informative. I'm just honing in on how much this tender, poignant love story made me feel. I loved it. Despite the hint of sadness this was one of those stories that just made me feel contented right from the start.
For me, it was the perfect length. It could have been fleshed out and made longer but I'm not sure if that would have done it any favours. It does span time but I never felt particularly short changed at all, in fact I finished it with a satisfied sigh. Definitely one of those ' go back to ' stories when you want a feel good read!
I suppose it could also have leant towards saccharin but I thought it was really well balanced. Sometimes these little tales can spill over with too much emotion or too much sweetness. I was very touched but not wrung out and sometimes that's just what you need.
In the author description at the end of the book it says that Parker Williams gave up writing earlier in his life after someone close made a detrimental comment and has just been persuaded to start again by another author who has supported him. This is my second story from Parker Williams -- the first being his free contribution to Love Has No Boundaries event, Lost Time
While this one is sweet and fits my idea of romance but I do have few nitpicks. At times, the story feels more showing rather than telling; and it's a bit too hygienic, which lessens my emotional connection towards the characters. Also, because of the length limitation, there are parts in which I think being glossed over and rushed.
Having said all that, the idea of childhood friends becoming lovers and stay together in sickness and health always melts my heart. There are a couple of scenes here that just make me all choked up and teary eyed -- one of them being Jase's present for Mark's 15th birthday. It's so sweet!!
And the epilogue? Well, that's just clinch the deal :)

You know? A short story like this should not be capable of turning me into a weepy, snotty mess! But that is exactly what happened!
Simply told from a teenager's voice, yet the feelings are powerful. Mark is missing his brother and his brother's best friend Jase (the guy Mark secretly loves), who have joined the Army and gone off to war. I was teary eyed from the beginning, but by the end, the tears wouldn't stop coming.
Yeah, I could go on and complain about how short it was, but honestly? It served its purpose and doesn't deserve my complaining.

I have been fortunate enough to read this prior to release.
I love the way Parker writes. His stories flow seamlessly, and this one is no exception.
And yes, I cried a little at the end.

500 Miles by Parker Williams is an amazing debut book by a talented author. The story flows, the characters are well developed to the point the reader feels like they are real people, and when it was over I wanted more.
You know the cliché, I laughed, I cried? Well, it’s certainly true with this story. Young Mark is separated from his brother Eric and Jase, the young man he has loved since, well, since he figured out what love is. Eric and Jase are being the altruistic men they were raised to be and join the Army to make a difference in the world. So, off they go to Afghanistan and Mark is left to grow up. Alone.
Jase leaves Mark a tape and a note telling him that he will come back to him. As time goes by, Jase realizes he is selfish to ask Mark to grow up without him and just wait for Jase to come back so he… well, I can’t tell you because it would spoil the story but there certainly is a gut-wrenching twist to the plot that you will not see coming, and neither did Mark, resulting in a broken heart and a boatload of guilt.

Even then, I am in the grip of loving these men and want more.

500 Miles is not what I had been expecting. In a lot of ways it was so much better than I had thought. This story is emotional and very sweet too. I love Jase and Matty. They were a really great couple. Even though I think Jase was stupid to do what he did.

What a beautiful story! It would seem that Parker Williams is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors in this genre. After reading his Love Has No Boundaries story Lost Time for the M/M romance group, and now this story too, I can honestly say that I think I'm turning into a little bit of a fangirl ;) His stories incorporate everything I love - a beautifully crafted romance with just the right amount of angst and emotion, as well as endings that melt my heart and make me smile like a fool.
500 Miles was absolutely perfect - it was romantic and very sweet, and the ending was absolutely wonderful. I'd quite happily have read a full length novel about Mark and Jase. I never wanted their story to end! Their romance was so beautiful that it made my heart ache and brought tears to my eyes. There were plenty of "awww" moments!
This is a great comfort read and I'll definitely be revisiting it whenever I need something romantic to put a smile back on my face. I can't recommend it enough to all fans of the genre. I'm really looking forward to reading much more from this author. Great job, Will ;)

A too short, short - this was packed full of angst, feels and love.
Bonus points for being my favorite trope of falling for your brother's best friend. Would've loved to have had a 200 page, more fleshed out version.
Regardless, this was very nice for the quick, enjoyable distraction that it was.

I've had this one on my wish list for a while now. It has glowing reviews from friends so after reading a less than satisfying story which also deals with 'best friend's younger brother trope' I decided it was time to move this one up and see of it was done better.
It was!

Jase is a great guy, really, of course Mark idolizes him and loves him, but as it happens when you are 14 and your brother and his friends are older, they leave you.
They didn't go off to college they went in the army, but still they kept in contact and those ( audio) tapes were the highlight of Mark's life.
Until they aren't anymore. I don't want to give too much away, but Jase and Eric ( Mark's brother) do what they think is best and Mark is devastated. But as expected, life is unpredictable and things have a way of working out.

Wow, it is really rare for me to give such a high rating to such a short story. I usually find that stories that short lack the time to really set up the story and characters in a way that feels satisfying to me and makes me care for the characters. I do read free shorts about already established characters, but I don't usually buy books that are very short, as I prefer my books between 300 and 400 pages.
I am however very glad that I won this book and got to read this amazing story. It feels much longer and like a complete story. It was wonderful to read this love story and I actually know the song that inspired it very well. (500 Miles by the Proclaimers was used prominently in the comedy series "How I Met Your Mother" as a road trip mix tape with only this song, and my buddies therefore all have one of those in their cars and I get to hear the song nonstop wherever they are driving, however long they are driving :)

In general, I avoid angst-ridden and martyr-type books. Mostly because I read for escaping purpose, and in most cases stories of martyr-type behaviors are forced and unrealistic.
Done right, combined with 'childhood friends' and 'in sickness and health', I would enjoy it so much.

Parker Williams first venture into the genre is a solid one. Engaging, entertaining and heart-wrenching. It's a valuable entry into the growing ranks of YA books and one I would wholly recommend to any reader who wants a wounded heart, healing love and stalwart characters. The writing is sublime and the author sympathetic to his characters' portrayal.

I have had the honour of reading this story early and I must say that I just adored it. I loved the use of the tapes and the song and i just loved the characters. I found that they were perfectly written for their age, enough self interest and more than a bit of devaluing their own emotions, to be more than believable.
The arc of the story was just beautiful, it was sweet and good and sexy as well and I cried happy tears and proud mummy tears, but I wont spoil it anymore. I know this is only one of a "Mixed Tape" collection of short stories and i am looking forward to reading more of these but more importantly I am looking forward to reading more from Parker Williams.

“500 Miles” by Parker Williams is an amazing story of first love amid the tragedy of war. The story grabbed me from the beginning and lead me to a happy and satisfactory ending. Thank you Parker for this remarkable story.
Now in regards to the person who so many years ago tried to squelch your dreams of becoming a writer by saying your writing was no good. Well, I beg to differ. Your writing is truly, truly good. I am so glad that you decided to take another chance. Your gift and talent means so much to me and I’m sure others.

Wow.
This was....good. Really good.
I was drawn in instantly and felt panicked as I watched the percentage icon fly by. I didn't want it to end. I believe just a little bit more would have kicked up into the 5 star sky.
But truly, it was engaging, honest and painful. And I loved it.

Really, more of a 3.75. I thought the story was sweet and delightful, though the recalled memory "feel" of the story prevented me from connecting with the characters. Nonetheless, it is an enjoyable quick read. Recommended.

This amazing story had me hooked from the start. Mark met me on the first page and pulled me along on his journey to growing up, and dealing with the not so great realities of life and love. I felt the love he held in his heart for Jase. I witnessed his tentative hopes that his affection would ever be returned. I cried when it all went wrong, and I was on the edge of my seat when disaster struck. This story is at once heartbreaking and heartwarming. Debut Author Parker Williams knocked this one out of the park! Highly recommended.
