"A Good Man in Evil Times" authored by Jose Fralon (1998, 164 pages). This short read documents the life and times of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, a Catholic Portuguese diplomat who served his government as counsel general in Bordeaux, France during WWII. Mendes, (b:1885; d:1954) defied the Nazi sympathizing Salazar regime, issuing visas and passports to thousands of refugees, mostly Jews, fleeing the Nazi’s in May of 1940.
This reviewer found few options when researching Mendes and unfortunately “A Good Man…”, although covering an important topic, is fairly uninspiring. Still, it is an important work as it serves to document the heroism and sacrifice of a person guided by a moral compass that resulted in saving an estimated 10,000 refugees; a compass that led him to a predictable ruin.
