USA Today Bestselling Author Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish. She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below. Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all. Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn't leave her alone.
I would've rated this higher because the story had me completely...
Then when what I expected to be the big climax came, it abruptly ended. Wait, what? The bad guys are here and everything is ready to blow and just... "Pack some clothes and let's go help?"
Not cool to sucker readers like this. Certainly doesn't make me want to pay for what may not even be the conclusion. 🤨
Sybil, an archeology student on an expedition, had found more than she expected from her research. None other than a Viking with a mind set on revenge, searching for his weapon, and obsessed with protecting her, her! Given the Viking's little knowledge of what was going on around him, Sybil was willing to help him, but not before enjoying the charms and skills of the specimen of a man. Entertaining, funny, and passionate as Sybil and Thor get down to business on the quest. The trickster has me intrigued with his sudden appearances because details about him are still lacking. The pieces are fitting together, slowly but surely, and we are seeing how the stories intertwine with each other, something that the author has accustomed me to. I like how she keeps me alert for details, and I enjoy it when I see something I recognize. Interesting as the author, through Thor words, she presents the myth in a more real and human way, moving it away from fantasy a little. I'm anxious to see how the revenge and curses thing will be resolved because so far, I have no idea. The plot twists have my eyes wide open. Love these stories. Voluntarily reviewed this copy I received from BookFunnel which I liked and was very entertained by.
I found this tale a really interesting take on mythology meets science involving the legendary Viking gods Thor, Loki and Odin, mixed up with an archeological expedition on Norwegian ice fields. I liked the way the author provided a paranormal spin but characterized Thor & co. as mortal Viking warriors who got trapped over the centuries by a scheming witch in league with their enemies.
Thor is summoned out of his thousand year limbo and gets some romance with young Australian researcher Sibyl who agrees to help reunite him with his hammer. Their ice and snow adventure was fairly quick and original with some heat thrown in. Although it takes place in Norway, Sibyl ties this story in with Carlton's earlier novellas about young women and gargoyles finding love in Western Australia.
I did not mind that the story ends with a cliffhanger. I did not read Fenrir, the prequel to this new series, but will most likely go back to read it for more backstory on Thor's enemies.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the story; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Thor, Lori, and Odin have gotten themselves beaten by Jarl Erik and his wolfman Fenrir. If that wasn't bad enough a witch has cursed Thor and buried him with a rock instead of a heart. The next time he awakens to someone calling for his help he faces a new witch, but one he doesn't mind serving. He will protect this woman for as long as she will let him.
Sibyl has won the prestigious Harold Medal and is far from her Australian home and closer to the Arctic Circle than Antarctica. Her dream is to find a real Viking buried in the ice but she will settle for evidence that a battle took place near their dig site. She is very surprised to find something that looks like Thor's hammer. She is even more surprised when a man shows up in camp that reminds her of Thor himself. She must be hallucinating.
Cliffhanger ending, but also the start of Loki's story with some Odin thrown in. Waiting with bated breath...
I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.
Whats this? A Paranormal Romance with a Norse Protector? Count me In!
This story is set at an Archaeology dig in Norway where our FMC gets pulled into the deep end when she unknowingly awakens a legendary Viking. We are introduced to Thor and other characters of legend in this exciting story that gets more and more interesting with each page.
The amount of research that has been put into the books can clearly be seen in the skillful historical reflection. The interpretation of myth & history and the presentation of the human tendency to embellish or misinterpret stories makes this story work so well.
The book was very well written, perfectly paced and impossible to put down! This is my first venture into Demelza Carlton's books (after accumulating numerous titles) and I can certainly say I was not disappointed and it will NOT be the last!
If Romance is your game and Myth & Monsters your sway then I would definitely recommend you read this book.
The only bad thing is the fact that I don't have the next one in hand already!
Sibyl is an archeologist in Norway with her team to find several different items that they hope to find under the ice. Sibyl is ecstatic when she finds Thor' s Hammer is so exciting that she makes a big mistake by going for a walkout out at night to the dig sight and slips on the ice and knocks herself unconscious but she calls for help just before and is surprise to find when she wakes that she is back in her tent. Thor her protector is her bigger surprise especially as he tells her he is her protector, Thor who looks better the actor who plays him she gets a kick out of the fact that he is dressed like Thor too, but this handsome man tells her he was cursed by a witch and a wolf shifter that helped her, he said that she called so he had to answer her call. Mystery Suspense, drama, romance, danger, and chance at love. A very entertaining, Book 1 in the series. I read a copy without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
Sybil is an archaeology student excavating in an ice field in Norway. She is looking for any kind of Viking-era remains. She finds Thor's hammer. And, yeah, then Thor.
Thor, Loki, and Odin are warriors who were sacrificed and magically preserved to come to the call of the witch who cursed them to frozen immortality. (As we know from the prequel, the witch was not doing this for evil ends).
One great part here is that the three Asgardian gods are portrayed as warriors whose stories have gotten amplified and changed over a thousand years. Those parts are seriously fun. Thor was the muscle of the warband. Loki was the scout. Odin was the commander.
Of course, Sybil falls for Thor. Thor is trying (with reasonable success) at figuring out this strange new world. A quest is started. And so things will go to the next book, Loki.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this as an ARC Sybil has won an award to be on an archeological dig looking for evidence of a village from a time long ago. Anything viking is what she hopes for. She gets a little more than expected when she uncovers Thor's hammer...and the warrior it belongs to. Thor hears her plea for help and responds to her command only to find she isn't the witch he expected. The history of vikings and some of their traditions was beyond interesting. Add in a touch of Demelza Carlton magic and you get a series starter that is compelling and page turning. The stage is set for angst, self exploration, and unending love. I can't wait to see where it goes and how it unfolds.
It was interesting. I liked the characters and the plot is okay but I was not so crazy about the constant, unnecessary sex scenes. They broke things up and interrupted the flow of the story. So that did not impress me. I also was very disappointed by the way it ended. Everything felt rushed and incomplete. To understand the ending I would have to get the next part of the book? Or the next in the series?
I could have forgiven the other things as I know that for all I like paranormal romance type books I am atypical about really not caring for the way many portray the physical relationship. But the lack of actual ending, leaving it on a broken cliffhanger dropped my rating to a solid 3. I don't think I'll get the next book simply because I don't want to get stuck with another cliffy
A delightful protector romance. Sibyl is an Australian Ph.D. archeology student looking for Viking artifacts and remains in Scandinavia. When she gets hurt, an ancient Viking, Thor, rescues her. The story is a nice blend of Viking mythology and history, as well as modern technology. While the story is quite good, it does end in a cliffhanger.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Romantic. Steamy. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
I received a review copy of this book from a third party. This is my honest review.
I really liked this story as return to the theme of foundation sacrifices and gargoyles. And get to see what happens when Sibyl gets her own Gargoyle. And I loved the different take on who the Viking gods we know might have really been. A good story with a bit of mystery and romance along with good characters. And set up what might happen next well. Sad to reach the end as wanted more and to know what was going to happen next.
I do love a good story full of mythology and this is such an addictive story. Sibyl is an archeologist and has traveled to the artic circle to look for Viking artefacts but she was not expecting to find Thor or his hammer! Their journey is exciting and thrilling as they must work together to break the curse placed on him. Drama, danger, suspense and romance, I loved this and look forward to more!
I loved it! I am a little short on time. I had fun reading it. I am glad to find books like this. It gives me a feel for this sort of thing. I would love to be able to do that sort of thing. Unfortunately I don't like being cold. Plus I don't have the brains or the patience to be an archeologist. I just think it would be amazing to be able to do that sort of thing. That's one of the reasons I like these books. It gives you a little bit of the interesting real kind of stuff with the magical & hot stuff. It keeps me glued to the book until the end of the story. I'm going to reread it many times over.
Thor: A Paranormal Protector Tale written by Demelza Carlton. This is a brand new re-telling of Thor. He isn't like the one in the Marvel movies... well, not exactly like him. There are all kinds of fun new things about him that we are getting to learn all while he is on a quest to stand up for his fallen sister. Its a good book but ended too soon! Now I have to wait on the next one!
Are hot heroes who are super protective of the heroine your jam? Are you a fan of Norse mythology? If you answered yes, then you need to read Thor. Demelza Carlton's take on Thor's story has a riveting mix of intrigue, danger, suspense and steam with a cliffhanger ending that left me wanting more. I can't wait to find out what happens next in Loki!
I really shouldn’t have enjoyed this as much as I did. For a free ebook (not gifted just found on a kindle event) it wasn’t too bad. If you watch the first Thor movie and wished it was rated R, pick this up.
My biggest complaint is that it ended on a cliffhanger and I’m probably not going to hunt down book 2.
What an epic story of survival. Thor had to protect Sibyl and he did just that. Although when the time came for him to help Loki , he had to leave Sibyl to help his friend. Can't wait to read the next book to see what happens.
Huh, not quite sure what to think about this one. Writing style was ok but the story is a bit hard to get in to or follow. This book requires you continue to read the others in the series. Not sure if I will continue or not.
This book kept me on the deck of my seat the entire time. It's a quick read. I absolutely love the character! Who wouldn't love a viking God who looks better than a Hemsworth? Thor is definitely a swoonworthy guy!
Can't seem to put these protector down want to keep reading to the end. These books have been a great experience to read. You really get caught up in the story.
