Warning: If you have no sense of humor and/or cancel culture is your current chosen religion, stop reading this review and definitely don’t pursue Jimmy Failla’s “Cancel Culture Dictionary.” The comedian blatantly yet hilariously calls out cancel culture and everyone and everything that supports it from awards shows to universities. He uses wit and cleverness to cut through the crap of it all to expose the silliness and pointlessness of this cultural phenomenon. Watch, someone will probably call for my cancellation for this review…
A quick read. Each chapter focuses on a 'woke' topic associated with a particular letter of the alphabet. A gimmick that really isn't needed, but lends a way to organize the material. A nice mixture of the issue, some historic perspective and of course Failla's jokes. If you're a fan of 'cancel culture' you probably won't care for this. If you've seen his monologues on his show, the chapters are very similar but without his fast paced delivery.
Jimmy Failla is a very funny guy and his book, interspersed with lots of humor, is an easy read. It's spot on with many examples of the attacks on the First Amendment rights of Americans by those who claim to be 'equitable" and/or "inclusive". This includes the mass media, many in Hollywood, and others: I'm not making a political statement here, rather an obervation about what's been transpiring in our country over the past five to six years. I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because Jimmy could have made his argument in half the number of pages. Otherwise, I recommend this book.
Very funny and entertaining. A primer—in fact an alphabetized reference book—on all the many, many examples of outrage and cancellation of various celebrities and public figures that have happened in the past few years. Some examples richly deserved cancellation, and some bordered on the ridiculous, and some fought back (you go, Dave Chappelle!)
Failla delivers classic comedic takes on all those episodes you may have forgotten about, but when taken as a whole, the book gamely illustrates this “war on fun” as Jimmy calls it, and our country’s need for a collective chill pill.
Audiobook was read by Failla, who as a broadcast professional, you can’t expect a better delivery than that for an author’s work. So yeah, go audiobook for this one.
I would rate this as a 3.5-4 star read but he got me on the very last Z chapter mentioning Brookfield Zoo, right down the street from where I grew up and my parents still live, was nice to hear my hometown mentioned.
Interesting commentary on how culture has impacted people’s lives for what they have said or done. Some are very justified consequences and others may have been unintentional yet others perhaps too severe. Jimmy did a good job of researching the background of headliners both current and historical. The humor gets a little snarky at times but to be clear, jimmy failla is a comedian.
I listened to the audiobook. It was an easy light read and funny at times/cringe at times - I laughed out loud and at rolled my eyes. JK Rowling to Will Smith, Kanye and Rosanne Barr and brands such as Budweiser to Victoria’s Secrets as well as woke college students were all mentioned. There were lots of references to American politics, the Republican and Democratic parties - some of which went over my head.
While the subject matter(wokism/cancel culture) is covered on all media platforms 24/7, Failla does a decent job of presenting it in a witty manner that makes reading more enjoyable. No groundbreaking information here; it’s all old news if you pay any attention to current events. But, the encyclopedic A to Z format with Failla’s self-depricating, cheesy zingers peppered throughout keeps things easy and light.
Jimmy's okay. Can't really. Say it's eye opening, or all that clever, and Jimmy, being self-deprecating, would be the first to agree. At one point, he says this book is written at a third grade level, and he's right. It really is. Plus, I got the audio version and over five hours of this guy's voice is daunting. But he does pretty well cataloging, alphabetically, the entirety of modern day cancel culture.
4.5 We listened to this while traveling, my husband and I enjoyed him and his point of views! So much damage has been done by cancel culture instead of what people “think” they are helping. I honestly would love some people to really read this book!
A funny and sarcastic review of the impact of cancel culture, including the hypocrisy of it all. If only more would read, reflect and see how rediculous their behavior has become. If only we cared more for each other and loved our neighbors, I think our communities would be much improved.
Listened to audiobook read by the author. Mixed thoughts on this book. It was funny at times, ridiculous, and offensive at others. The author is clearly conservative so sometimes I’d roll my eyes at oh how conservative and others he made great sense.
Jimmy Failla's humor at times can be a bit raunchy for my taste but then that is the point of the book--that someone shouldn't be "cancelled" because their brand of humor/entertainment/politics disagrees with another person or group. He gives the FOX News "fair and balanced" treatment to a list of subjects and people who were cancelled for one reason or another. I found it a good read to pick up for anyone interested in current events, specifically the modern trend of "cancel culture."
In his book, comic Jimmy Failla hilariously dismantles the ridiculous Cancel Culture phenomena. Taking down everyone and everything from LeBron James to Colin Kaepernick, from Bud Light to Victoria's Secret, from Cory Bush to Neil Young and from major league sports to the universities.
Make no mistake, this is not just a humorous book filled with liberal smackdowns. Jimmy is a talented comedian whose thoughtful wit is filled with common sense and intelligent commentary. He's always respectful of his audience.
Jimmy also gives a shout-out to J.K. Rowling, Roseanne Barr, Riley Gaines and Jason Aldean for having the courage to speak up against cancel culture at their own peril.
"We're living in the dumbest time ever, and the deterioration of free thought on college campuses has led the way in getting us there" ~ Jimmy Failla
Jimmy Failla: comedian, former NYC taxi driver, Fox News host. I know him primarily from Gutfeld!. In this funny, thought-provoking and entertaining book, he takes a look at the cancel-culture epidemic and how it makes things worse for everyone. Topics range from the Oscars, to Bill Cosby and Dave Chappelle, to Dr. Seuss and Roald Dhal, to Trump, Rosanne, Tiger Woods and a whole lot in between. The content is great, and in my opinion, listening to him read the audiobook is even better. A fun, thought-provoking breath of fresh air that never takes itself too seriously.
