the first half of this made me recognise the moldovan in me to such an extent that i had to put the kindle down every ten minutes to recuperate. i simply did not suspect i was like this, the moldovan explosiveness got covered up with the slavic northern attitude. it was also very nice to read through the streets of my hometown, one of horia’s favorite places to sit in is one of our traditional meeting spots :,) the second half won me over with the theme of the preservation of personal/national history vs. the soviet desire to eradicate what really binds people to their soil to build a kolkhoz on top.

could have been five stars, had it not been for a bit disorganised narration, and, jesus christ, the misogyny and horia‘s horrible struggle of being a 185cm tall man in the 1972 moldova 🕯️🥀 yes, we know everybody here wants you. the way not a single description of a woman is humane made me regret that we had gone into lockdown before i got to be mad about it in class. jeannette, fata originală manic pixie dream…druță did her dirty with no psychological motivation whatsoever, though the narrative motivation i could imagine if i squinted really hard. jenea, he could never make me hate you.

listened to doga’s “early spring” throughout! + read with katya
