I am in a magic class (real magic, not like Houdini stuff) -- anyway, we are starting year 3, and we will be discussing secret societies, so, I thought I might get a head start.
Head start...funny. Today we have our discussion on Secret Societies, and I read this book last night. And I am not overly impressed. It is a rather small book, and it looks at 21 different societies -- and you just get a brief glimpse of each one. And the book is a bit of a fear monger -- The last line in the book is "How many reasons have you already invented to reassure yourself that none of this is true?" -- but really, it didn't have anything in there that was overly scary. The Politicians of today all belong to various different societies, that overlap on occassion, and involve big secrets. UM, that is what our government is in my opinion...one giant secret...look at the president when he gets elected, and then look at him four years later. Almost everyone one of them (I think W is a anomally, but I don't think they shared everything with him) looks like they have aged 25 years + really. Why would anyone WANT to be president?
A simple introduction into 21 of the more notable "Secret Societies" of all time, about 5 pages dedicated to each. There is a lot of introductory information regardless and the author even included websites to check out. The fact that Secret Societies are secret, I tend to take everything discussed with a grain of salt. I am not familiar with the author but I'd definitely take the authors background into consideration when delving into these types of topics. The book was still a good read and would be a good place to start although I don't intend to dig deeper into secret societies.
A good overview for some of the societies listed. Each group is given 2-4 pages of detail. If you're experienced with "secret societies," I would think this may not help you, but if you're less knowledgeable and just looking for general, beginner's information, this is a quick and sometimes dramatic read.
I know this is just an intro to secret societies, but it was very frustrating when the author would sound like he was going to explain something right before ending the chapter. I was also confused by his assertion that the illuminati had "accomplished their goal" of creating one govt for the whole world and destroying the family or whatever it was, but didn't bother to tell us *how* they did that or *why* he thought that, because from my perspective, that hasn't happened at all. other than that, the book was interesting and I will be looking for more specific details on several of the societies mentioned.
edit: the author also mentions seeking out INFOWARS for more information on a certain secret society (I forget which). INFOWARS?! The "chemicals in the water are turning the freaking frogs gay" people?! is no one else talking about that society?? nobody slightly less idiotic?? nobody even a LITTLE bit credible??
The book is somewhat interesting — certain cults definitely caught my attention, and I was already familiar with a few of them. However, many of the so-called facts can’t really be verified, so much of it feels more like speculation than solid research.
A primer on various secret societies that have existed from the Middle Ages up to the present day. Not an in-depth study, but the beginnings for further research and awareness.
Knyga trumpai supažindina apie įvairias tiek senas, tiek šių dienų pasaulines organizacijas. Tiek oficialias, tiek gal nelabai.
Informacijos patikimumas yra diskutiotinas – joje pateikiami teiginiai dažnai remiasi spekuliacijomis, sąmokslo teorijomis ir ne visada patikimais šaltiniais.
This is a sort of very basic overview of some of the major players in the most popular Conspiracy Theories, which I read in one sitting on the plane. It's really light in providing the interesting coincidental details that make Conspiracy Theories fun, but I suppose it makes an acceptable overview for someone who's never been exposed to them before. I did learn about a group I'd never heard of before. Kind of pointless unless you can find it in the bargain bin (like I did).
It covers the Assassins, the Bilderberg Society, the Bohemian Club, the Club of Rome, the Council on Foreign Relations, Essex Junto (very interesting -- didn't know about those), Freemasonry, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, The Bavarian Illuminati, the Knights Templar, the Ku Klux Klan (hardly secret, but whatever), the Mafia, Majestic-12/The Aviary/The Aquarium, Mensur, Opus Dei, the Order of Skull and Bones, the Priory of Sion, the Rosicrucians, the Round Table, Triads, and the Trilateral Commission.
What a let down. That's what you get when you pick up a Barnes and Noble pressed book. The book is cheap to buy and the information is Cheap to read. For what it was, the book wasn't to terrible. It wasn't to great either. This book is just mediocre at best. It's information that anyone who knows anything about secret societies should already know this information. If not. Shame on you. For the person who is trying to figure out if they really want to learn or even dive off into researching any secret society, then this would be the book for them. This book is nothing more than a greatest hits of secret societies with the greatest hits liner notes. Pass on this one. It's a waste.
I became interested in this book as an offshoot of having read DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons. So far, it is very interesting and has held my interest well. It is set up so that I can read a section and finish it in one setting, then set it aside for a later date to read a new section. Each section is a different secret or not-so-secret society!
A well put together book. It is a good reference in keeping certain "secret" societies documented, and explains in mild detail of their mysterious origins. I found it very enlightening as to where such groups as the Free Masons started, and their place in society today.
This book doesn't have much new to say on the subject of secret societies. However, the material is clear, well organized and to the point. This, along with the intriguing and well chosen photos and illustrations, is why the book deserves a four star rating.
They exist people, accept it. However, don't accept this book. It was somewhat good historical info, but I was hoping for more of a conspiracy theory type of material.
real simple and direct explanations of "secret" societies, provides the facts and doesn't lay on the conspiricies too thick. Are they conspiricies if everyone knows about them?
Interesting book. Really wanting to learning about the Illuminati, but interesting to see how much this nation really is run by "societies". Nothing is by chance. Quick, informing read.
