I sat with Yan Yan once in the gazebo in the garden and watched a plump white cloud sailing above the treetops. It was like a pig blown up by the heavens. The air was almost still, and the cloud was gliding slowly. Suddenly it looked as if the stomach of the cloud had touched a treetop where it would get stuck. 'No, no,' shouted Yan Yan. 'No, no,' I shouted as well. No, no, the cloud slid peacefully above the treetop. [57]
I am lying in the hay looking at the sky. It is blue and clear from one edge to the other. I fall asleep, and when I open my eyes again, the clouds are beginning to cover up the sky. Thin, curly clouds are rising from the edges like carded wool. The woolly ribbons are moving slowly, drawing together. I stare at the sky and the clouds. Slowly, the ribbons get tangled with each other, and little by little, the sky begins to look uniformly grey. I have witnessed it all happen. I am old. I am alone. I do not want anyone to look at me.
