Charlotte Gates lives and works at her family’s resort. She is tired to be known only as ‘Charlie Rae’. Even if she loves her life, the lake and her family's cabins she wants more than the life she has right now. She loves looking at the stars and she wants to explore the world. Her family needs and expects her to stay forever in Lakeland Village. Besides her family, Charlie has Alec, her best friend, the only boy in the Village she can stands. Unlike her sister who’s more a girlie girl, Charlie is more a tomboy. At 15 Charlie is not interested in boys or dating like other girls, but when she meets Nathaniel ‘Nate’ she has one of those key moments you have in life.
“I believe everyone has certain key moments in their lives they’ll never forget. Moments marking the beginning or end of something. Moments that will always own a little piece of you."
“This is one of my moments. I know it like my body knows it has to breathe to survive.”
Nate (16) is at ‘The Village’ with his parents and his brothers for the summer. From the beginning he can tell Charlie is different from any girl he knows. He likes her and Charlie likes Nate as well.
Charlie and Nate start to spend all their free time together. They get to know each other, they star gazing together and they become best friends. Both of them know when the summer ends Nate will have to go back with his family, but despite all that they start a beautiful, innocent romantic relationship. Summer ends, they part ways, but they stay in touch. But only for a while.
The second summer when Nate comes back at ‘The Village’ with his family they meet again. They never forgot each other and they still feel the connection between them.
“She likes me. This totally cool girl who I would do anything for. Who trusts me with her secrets and who makes me forget for the first time in months. I knew it last year, but this doesn’t feel the same. It feels like more.
For four years they meet every summer. They stay friends, sharing everything with each other, but they also become more. Both have relationships that come and go. Over the years they have some ups and downs in their relationship, but they never forget each other, falling for each other hard.
I really enjoyed this sweet and lovely story. It was a romantic and emotional at times read that made me smile numerous times. I like both main characters, Charlie and Nate from the moment they were introduced. I liked them individually and I liked them together. I liked the fact Charlie is a tomboy and Nate is not the typical male character in YA and NA, a bad boy. The author did a great job with their character development. They really felt different with every summer. With every summer I felt how much they grow up, how mature they became. Charlie is a kind-hearted heroine that will win you heart from the beginning. She’s hard working, smart and competitive and she’s willing to sacrifice herself to do ‘the right thing’ for her family. She’s a good girl and doesn’t rely on anyone. I like that about her. She’s also a great friend. From the beginning her characterization felt real. I really felt I was in a 15 years (16 years old and so on..) girl’s head. Nate is sweet, attentive and protective over the years. The way he is with Charlie warmed my heart. He’s funny and adorable and he cares deeply for her. He also cares for her dreams and I loved him for that. While I didn’t like the obstacles they have in their way (of course) I appreciated the fact their relationship progressed in a realistic way.
Their relationship is sweet and their love is tender and I loved all their romantic encounters - every kiss, every hug, every affectionate gesture. I also loved the fact they are honest with each other through the years. They are perfect for each other and I loved how they give each other what they need.
The side characters are interesting and some of them plays an important role in Charlie and Nate's relationship. One of them is Alec, Charlie's friend. I have mixed feelings for Alec’s character. He’s a good friend for Charlie, caring and supportive and I like that about him, but there were some moments when I really wanted to punch him in the face. At some point to protect himself he hurts both Charlie and Nate. Needless to say I dislike him a little for that, even if I understood his reasoning and even if I felt for him. I enjoyed the dual POV and the fact the steam is very, very low didn’t bothered me at all.
All in all, "Four Summers” is a wonderful story about life, love, destiny, growing up and so much more with a simple, but interesting plot, endearing characters and great writing.

Four Summers by Nyrae Dawn had me hooked from the first chapter. The story was everything a teenage girl dreams of happening during your summer vacation…meeting the boy of your dreams!!
The book is cleverly told over the course of four summers in alternating povs. The first summer told from Charlotte’s pov and the second Nathaniel Chase’s and so on.
I loved the love story of Star Girl and the boy who wore his hat to the back. I loved how Charlotte worked and stood by her father and dreamed of more.
Charlotte a.k.a. Charlie lives at her family run resort the Village and dreams of the stars and life outside the resort. Nathaniel and his family stay at the resort and they develop a friendship and firsts along each summer of this book.
Charlotte and Nathaniel sneak out to star gaze and talk each night. Their developing relationship is one that both cherish. They share their dreams together and fall in love through the span of these four years.
Charlotte’s best friend Alec seems to hold her past, present and future and is a source of insecurity for Nathaniel. Long distance relationships sometimes can’t survive, will theirs?

I LOVED how the characters grew each summer and all the obstacles that all face through the four years and the bond that they shared.
”I’ll be sappy with you, Star Girl. No one knows me like you do.”
So why didn’t I give this book the 5 stars I was planning on…
At about 75 % mark in the book, Nyrae Dawn hits a reader with a shocking twist which impacts our couple. I found that the twist and effects took away from Charlotte and Nathaniel’s love story and the beauty of it by putting others smashed in the forefront. I felt that the love story was strong and sweet enough to carry the book till the end.
Possibly an epilogue or another chapter would satisfy my desire to connect more to this couple in the end ~ Please Nyrae Dawn!
”We’ve grown and changed, screwed up, but at the beginning of each summer, we found each other again. Or maybe we never really lost each other.”
This story was well written and well told and I would recommend it to a reader looking for a good YA story.

April 28, 2013If you've read a lot of Nyrae's stuff, I'll just tell you that Four Summers is at the younger YA end of the spectrum for her. It's got a sweet innocence to it, despite the serious issues it deals with toward the end. Watching these characters grow up and face their challenges is a special, heartfelt journey. The summers are told from dual point of views, which was very well done. Another lovely romance from Nyrae. :)

4.5 Summer Love Stars!
This book was just what the doctor ordered. Young, innocent love...so beautiful. I don't usually read YA, but this had all the components of YA romance- the innocence, the sweet tender love story full of firsts, but none of the OTT drama that usually comes with a YA.
Just a beautiful love story from start to finish. I couldn't put it down. Absolutely brilliant premise for a book. How many of us girls didn't dream about meeting the perfect boy on those boring family vacays back in the day?
Desperately needed an epilogue and there was a good amount of grammatical and spelling issues that needed to be addressed- not enough to distract me from the story, but enough that it was noticeable. Those are the only things that kept this from being 5 stars for me. Otherwise, absolutely LOVED!!!
Had never read anything from Nyrae Dawn before...will definitely be checking out more of her stuff soon!

I think my favorite thing about this novel was that though there was angst it wasn't OTT unrelateable angst.
Anyone who has experienced a summer romance, be it fling or intense can relate to how both characters felt.
Nate was adorable & so sweet. And was just such a normal guy.
He had his own moments of angst as all teens do but he didn't become a total douche or become the ultimate bad boy.
Don't get me wrong I love a good "bad" boy but its refreshing to have a novel where he is just a guy who falls in love with a girl.
Charlie was also very likeable, I felt sorry for her predicament and admired her self sacrifice in a person so young. Though she did have her teen "poor me its not fair" moments I think they were justified. Her mother! Oh My God her MOTHER!!!!
I loved how they stayed fairly honest with each other between summers, cause lets be honest even adults would find it hard to abstain over that length of time let alone hormonal teens!
My only criticism is that I didn't really get to know the likes of Alec & Brandon as much as I would have liked considering how important they were to the story and Nate & Charlie.
But as always another great read by a great author :)

This is the third book of Nyrae's I've read and again I was not disappointed. The premise of this book was AMAZING. I have never read a book that was spread out over 4 summers. I loved that each summer was a different POV. I think it made the story even better hearing both sides of the story. This book was an incredible story about 2 teenagers on a journey to discover who they are. Not knowing that each one would find something wonderful in each other. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great love story without a lot of the outside drama that usually factors in.

I pretty much read anything Nyrae Dawn writes. I mean, I drop everything and read her books the day they come out. I don't eat or sleep, I don't pass go and I certainly don't collect $200. I'm never disappointed and I've come to the point where I actually start to have withdrawals if a new book doesn't come out every couple of months. I start to wonder, where is she? When is she going to get that book out? How much longer do I need to wait? Then I stalk her on facebook and twitter until I get some kind of concrete information. Good thing she writes quickly because I don't know what I would do if I had to wait a year between books like so many other authors.
This book was no disappointment. Again, an amazing, sweet and beautiful story of love. Nate and Charlie meet the summer when they are 15 at Charle's family's lake resort. They start off as friends but it's clear there is an attraction. We get to see over the following 3 summers where they fall in love with each other and face all the obstacles one can expect teenagers to face as they grow up. It was so realistic in this and the beauty of this book is the time. We get to slowly watch them change and mature and fall in love and face heartbreak and obstacles and overcome them. We get to see them grow up and it's not easy because lets face it, it's not easy to grow up. Their love is so sweet that I simply sunk into this story and didn't stop until it was finished.
There is a twist in the story which I absolutely loved and I felt like this twist was handled with great care and quite realistically. I loved that the story was a little different, it didn't follow the more typical YA or NA coming of age/falling in love story. Everything didn't get wrapped up so nice and neat within months of meeting, it took years for Charlie and Nate to figure things out and to figure themselves out. They have to figure out who they are before they can truly give themselves to each other and guess what, it doesn't happen at the same time for both of them, which is how it normally is.
This book was perfect for me since I had literally JUST finished a gut wrenching, rip your heart out book and I needed something that I could simply experience with no emotional upheaval. I need a story I could disappear in and could come out at the end smiling that all is right in the world and this book provided it. Again, another great book and this one is easily #2 or #3 on my list of favorite Nyrae Dawn books.
Read her books. She tells amazing, beautiful and simple stories. She has books that are more YA in nature and more NA in nature. This book is more YA in nature in my opinion but don't let that put you off, some of the best books I've ever read and enjoyed were YA and this is one that anyone no matter their age can enjoy. Go ahead, meet Charlie and Nate. You won't be sorry.

The first summer of this novel finds Charlie Rae age 15, helping out her father with his camp alongside her best friend, Alec at the Village in the town of Lakeland Village. She feels overworked and underappreciated. Her mother and her sister, Sadie Ann, are indifferent at best to her. She can never earn her mother’s admiration. Guys are not something that interests her at this point in her life either, that is until…

That first summer, Summer Boy, Nathaniel Chase, his brother Brandon (these two won the lottery on the gorgeous gene pool) and his parents arrive for vacation. Charlie is a little smitten with him, he’s hot and cool and all things unapproachable. She’s comfortable with her best friend Alec, he may be good looking and constantly surrounded by girls, but it’s sports that that interest him. Alec is comfortable.
Nathaniel is interested in Charlie, he likes her. He enjoys her explaining the stars she see and calls her “Star Girl “and “Charlotte” and makes her feel special. Alec fits in with Nate and Brandon, especially Brandon, who is a jock too. Charlie and Nate share secrets and kisses and stories. He gives her a matching necklace with a star dangling on it and he leaves. Back to his life and the girl he agreed to give some space to for the summer.
They stayed in touch for a few months, but Nate went back to his life and Charlie had her first boyfriend. When he returns the next summer, he has changed. Something bad happened and he blames himself and the incident changed life for his family too. But he and Charlie reconnect and become close once again. And he leaves again.
Both have relationships that come and go and Charlie’s family undergoes major changes. This time the two stay in touch. Their third summer comes around. Charlie’s father depends on Charlie more than ever and her free time is scarce. Nate is sweet and caring and honest.
“What is it about stars that you love so much?” he asks. That answer comes quickly. “Because they’re infinite. They’re miracles, and anything is possible when you look out into the massive space that goes on and on.” Because I want that. I want to explore and see what’s out there and feel as free as those stars in the sky.
Their relationship evolves and matures and deepens. Both recognize that their feelings have long ago passed the friendship stage. Charlie happens upon something, seeing something she should never have seen and impulsively make a decision that will change lives.
Both go their separate ways, now seniors in high school. Nate pretends to himself that he is over Charlie, and that she has no place in his life anymore. That is until Charlie contacts him and lets him know she is in New York, his state, his town. Can he see her again, can he get the answers he needs, can he forgive?
Dawn has written a beautiful novel that sweeps us along with Charlie and Nate’s journey. It is a wonderful thing seeing their relationship mature and survive and even thrive as they leave their childhoods behind and make rational decisions and assume responsibility for their actions and those they have come to love and protect. This is a sweet, endearing book which was a pleasure to read.

No fue para nada lo que esperaba, pero estuvo bien, supongo. Bonito y entretenido...
Me gustaron ambos personajes, y ver como con cada nuevo verano sus personalidades iban cambiando, creciendo y mejorando. La Charlie de ese primer verano no es la misma del último. Aunque puedo decir que Nathaniel seguía igual de celoso e inseguro.
Aunque mi personaje favorito es Brandon, sencillamente porque me siento conmovida por su sufrimiento, me gustó que al final le contara la verdad a su hermano... Un paso a la vez, al parecer :P
En fin, una historia entretenida... tanto que la leí en unas horas jaja

I'm not sure what I was expecting going into Four Summers. I just knew that after Charade and Measuring Up, that I would read anything that Dawn writes. So when I started reading, the smooth prose, beautiful words, humor and love really jumped out at me & showed me my worship of her was deserved.
Four Summers starts with 15 year old Charlie Rae, the girl with a passion for astronomy but the destiny of continuing her families legacy & marrying her lifelong best friend Alec and staying in The Village. Her home, her job, her life.
Enter Nathaniel, from the Big Apple. He's come to stay at The Village for the summer. Each year, and each Summer over the four years, they are a year older, and a little different than the one before. Their lives change, circumstances tear them apart when they are separate and the following Summer they begin to heal.
I read Four Summers in one sitting and felt a whirlpool of emotions in my stomach all the way through. The first summer I felt loneliness, nervousness & the stirrings of first love.
The Second I felt melancholy, apprehensive, elation and doing things and feeling things for the first time ever. The Third was just...wow. Almost perfect, the all consuming feelings of first love, and feeling as if you know someone almost as much as you know yourself, and the honesty of all the emotions.
Four Summers really was such a beautiful read. I giggled at times, and shed more than a few tears throughout the pages. I loved so many things about the story. I could type all day and couldn't do this book justice. It has many messages that I took from it and still has me considering days later. I would absolutely recommend picking up this book and meeting & falling in love with Charlotte, Nate, Alec, & Brandon & their families.
Well done Ms Dawn, another beautiful story with more WOW, SIGH & SWOON moments that I could count. I did count the 146 hightlights I made though. I LOVE-LOVE-LOVED FOUR SUMMERS ♥

Nathaniel Chase ends up at The Village with his family for their summer vacation. He’s not expecting much out of it and really only has his brother to hang out with. But then he sees Charlotte and something about her draws him in. She’s different than other girls and sees the world in such a different way. They form a close friendship but eventually summer must end.
This is the story of Nate and Charlotte’s four summers together. Four summers to become best friends, share secrets, help each other, have many firsts, and eventually fall in love. But can a relationship that exists only in the summer survive the rest of the year? Or will their different lives pull them apart?

I really liked this one. It was definitely more of a YA book and very very light on the steam. There were some make-out seshes and fade-to-black scenes but that was it. It was much more about these two growing up and discovering who and where they wanted to be.
Charlotte was such a great character. She’s not afraid to play with the boys, is fiercely competitive, smart, funny, and has a huge heart. She’s willing to put all her dreams aside for her family's. She knows how much her dad needs her and she was ready to give it all up to stay at The Village and help him.

Nate was so great. I loved how he pushed Charlotte to want more and to help her realize her dreams and stars are important. He lets her open up to him and sees who she really is. And what happened to him between the first and second summer showed what a great guy he is.
I thought the alternating POVs for the different summers was a really interesting way to tell the story. Even though we really only get snapshots of Nate and Charlotte’s lives I feel like I didn’t miss anything. Nyrae Dawn is great at giving her characters real emotions and I loved seeing Nate and Charlotte realize their feelings for each other and fall in love.

I loved ‘Star Girl’ and ‘Summer Boy’ and how sweet they were together. I felt that the pacing of the story was perfect because this was about the pivotal first love. There were all the fumbles and stumbles of falling in love for the first time and it all put a huge smile on my face. I loved how honest Charlotte and Nate were with each other (besides that one thing but I could understand that). They could share anything with each other; things they wouldn’t tell anyone else.
One of the most enjoyable YA stories I’ve read. It warmed my heart, made me laugh, and grin like an idiot. I felt like I grew up with these two characters and saw all the changes from summer to summer. Even though I’m only 20, this book made me remember what it’s like to be 15 years old and not knowing where life is going to take me. A fantastic, sweet story of love, stars, and learning to chase your dreams.

Summer, the lake, the stars, the new hot guy, what could possibly go wrong?
Teen-age Charlotte and Nathaniel form a deep friendship over three years as his family vacations in her father's Village cabins by the lake. They have an almost-immediate rapport, and this develops and deepens to romantic feelings and the stirrings of love.
Much keeps Charlotte and Nathaniel apart. His family lives far away, and it's never a given that they will meet again after each summers' end. Charlotte longs to leave the Village and study astronomy, but she's trapped by loyalty and love. Her father loves the place, and he and everyone else assumes Charlotte will marry Alec, her best friend from childhood. Alec is a devoted friend, and, in all fairness, is also a hunk. However, it seems to Nathaniel that he is the person who seems to really see Charlotte and care about her dreams and her feelings.
The POV alternates between Charlotte and Nathaniel. As Nathaniel tells about the summer before senior year, he and Charlotte have revealed their relationship. Both are acknowledging how deeply they care for each other. This is when The Bad Thing happens. Now hearts are shattered and trust is broken. It's the end of the Charlotte and Nathaniel magic.
But wait. There's more. ... There's a lot of angst for Nathaniel and sorrow and idiocy from Charlotte (who really needs to stop being so self-sacrificing). They meet again the next summer. What do you think will happen next?
I liked this story, but not as much as other books by this author. It seemed a little slow, particularly during the first summer. For the most part, I was okay with love in a lower key, so it suited me. This author seems to know a lot about teen feelings and emotions, so her characters have a strong reality. (Now I can start looking forward to her next book, which looks to be more NA than YA.)

Just absolutely AMAZING!
Nyrae Dawn never holds back. Always willing to take on tough topics and tough characters.
Don't read the synopsis or see the cover and think "it's the same ol' summer story."
This is new and sweet and has twists and turns that only Ms. Dawn could give us. And these characters are so real and so wonderful, that I will miss them tomorrow now that I'm done with the book.
I hope so so so so so much we get a book from Alec or Brandon's POV. It makes me giddy with just the idea.
Take a chance and read this story! You won't regret a minute of it!

I just finished this book and my heart is all sappy and I have a big smile on my face. I simply adored this book!! It’s a story of young love that blossoms and matures over 4 summers. It’s a story about family and the sacrifices made for the sake of family. It’s a story of hope, encouragement, acceptance and most of all, Love. Teenage love. Friendship love. Romantic love. Family love. Unconditional love.
Charlie (short for Charlotte) is 15 years old and lives and works at her family-owned lake resort, The Village. (Think Kellermans in Dirty Dancing). She has always loved the lake and is expected to take over the resort when she gets older. But she starts to want bigger and better things. She loves star gazing and dreams of exploring life. Traveling and discovering the possibilities.
What is it about stars that you love so much?” he asks.
That answer comes quickly. “Because they’re infinite. They’re miracles, and anything is possible when you look out into the massive space that goes on and on.” Because I want that. I want to explore and see what’s out there and feel as free as those stars in the sky.”
Unfortunately she feels trapped helping her dad take care of The Village. Her mom and sister are no help and she knows her dad can’t do it without her. Lucky for her, her best friend Alec also loves The Village and he is always there to help her. He is also her big brother, protector and shoulder to cry on. He knows her and understands how she feels about “being trapped.” They have been friends since they were in diapers so they have a strong bond and truly love each other.
“…I love you Charlie…”
I tell him “I love you too” We have been telling each other that since we were three years old and both of us know what it does and doesn’t mean.
The book starts off with the first summer Nathaniel and his family comes to the lake for 3 months. From their first meeting, Charlie knows this boy is different. Special. Nathaniel is curious about this girl who seems carefree, cute and down to earth. And so their friendship begins. They are both at that awkward age where they are just figuring out how to navigate boy-girl relationships. You know, that age when girls start to realize boys don’t have germs and boys think maybe girls aren’t so silly. Even though they both have the butterflies in their stomachs when they are around each other, they also know Nathaniel lives a thousand miles away and will be going home at the end of the summer. So they become best friends and spend their time star gazing, getting to know each other and sharing feelings and dreams. The summer comes to an end and Nathaniel and his family have to leave. He and Charlie stay in touch via email and phones for a while but something terrible happens that changes Nathaniel a few months later.
Summer #2 comes around and Nathaniel and his family are back at The Village and things are rocky and distant between him and Charlie. What happened to Nathaniel has changed him. Charlie’s family pressures have changed her. They both begin to realize that their friendship is what helps them through the things going on in their lives. They are just better when they are together. They also start to realize their feeling for each other are evolving.
“My pulse jumps. She likes me. This totally cool girl who I would do anything for. Who trusts me with her secrets and who makes me forget for the first time in months. I knew it last year, but this doesn’t feel the same. It feels like more."
Summer #2 comes to an end and even though they have to say goodbye again, they stay in touch via phone, email and Skype. When Summer #3 rolls around, they are the best of friends who know there is more than just “friend” feelings between them.

Summer #3 is full of changes. Both Charlie and Nate (as he now likes to be called) are growing up physically and emotionally. Nate notices Charlie’s curves. Charlie is swooning over Nate’s filled out football player body. They also are more serious about not just their relationship but the issues going on with their families. The are at the age they are thinking about their future together, as well as individually. Time to make some adult decisions about college and following your dreams. You know what they say about life, it can change in a blink of an eye. And at the end of Summer #3, it does.
In summer #4, the cute, naive 15 year old kids that met 3 years ago have found love, lost love, made mistakes and now understand the importance of the ones we love in our lives. Be it, parents, siblings, friends or those we give our hearts to.
“We’ve grown and changed, screwed up, but at the beginning of each summer, we found each other again. Or maybe we never really lost each other.”
I’ll say it again, I simply adored this book.
I will warn you, if you are looking for a book full of angst, sex, gut-wrenching drama and twist and turns around every corner, this book may not be for you. Just because a book doesn’t make you cry your eyes out, set your hormones on fire or make you want to beat your ereader against the wall, doesn’t mean it’s not an awesome book. For me, this book made me experience the perfect mixture and range of emotions from sweetness to sorrow. From warmth to shock and frustration to joy.
I have read several of Nyrae Dawn’s books, 2 of which are on mine All-Time Favorites shelf, now to be joined by Four Summers. Regardless if she is writing about tattooed, cocky men or sweet clean cut teenagers, she reels me in and I fall in love with her characters. She is officially one of my Must-Read authors.

I'm not sure what I was expecting going into Four Summers. I just knew that after Charade and Measuring Up, that I would read anything that Dawn writes. So when I started reading, the smooth prose, beautiful words, humor and love really jumped out at me & showed me my worship of her was deserved.
Four Summers starts with 15 year old Charlie Rae, the girl with a passion for astronomy but the destiny of continuing her families legacy & marrying her lifelong best friend Alec and staying in The Village. Her home, her job, her life.
Enter Nathaniel, from the Big Apple. He's come to stay at The Village for the summer. Each year, and each Summer over the four years, they are a year older, and a little different than the one before. Their lives change, circumstances tear them apart when they are separate and the following Summer they begin to heal.

This is one of the sweetest coming of age stories I've read. I absolutely loved it! I wanted to rate this 5 stars for "amazing" but I just couldn't because of errors, and not just a couple of typos. One of my biggest pet peeves with books is when they have a really good plot, well-developed characters, and twists and turns in places you don't expect, but the author doesn't care enough to make sure the book is edited well, or the author's editor is not a good one and the author doesn't realize it. For that reason I gave 4 stars. Having errors with "your" and "you're" and "I" rather than "A" and "has" rather than "as" and lower case "charlotte" and embarrassing errors such as "But you're weren't home" and "You're inner football player must be pissed" and "But you're weren't here" is, in my book, inexcusable. These types of gross errors simply disallow me to enjoy my reading experience with that book quite as much as I would otherwise. I REALLY hope Dawn realizes how distracting these mistakes are and finds herself a really good editor so her books can be 100% amazing!
As for the characters, I adored Nathaniel and Charlotte! They are an adorable couple who meet during summer vacation and fall in love over the course of four summers, thus the title. When they first meet they're only 15, so I was glad that they didn't allow themselves to rush into romance of any kind. As their relationship grew over the summers, it had time to develop into something very special. Each summer after they said their good-byes, Brandon and Alec were not my favorite characters because of the fact that
The plot was so very sweet. I think the love interests were absolutely innocent in nature, even though Kudos to Dawn for how she handles this subject so well.
Recommendation: Even though I absolutely was distracted and hated that there were numerous writing errors in this book, it is still a book well-worth reading. I really hope that Ms. Dawn finds a good editor to help her make her books truly amazing.
Not to Ms. Dawn: If you read this I want you to know that I LOVED this book, and I am not trying to be mean spirited or cruel. I LOVE reading, and I love your writing (plot, characterization) but such blatant errors just don't belong. When I read books with this many errors, I think, "No wonder students have such a hard time differentiating between words such as "your" and "you're."

I enjoyed this story about a boy and girl over the course of 4 summers. I am always interested in character arcs and growth so part of what drew me in was the story spanning a good length of time. You see the nature of Nathaniel's and Charlotte's relationship change and how the balance of power and need shifts between the two. Throw in family issues- especially Nathaniel's brother, and factor in Charlotte's best friend Alec with his own issues and impact and there are a lot of aspects to this book.
This is YA with a tiny bit of an edge. It has the voice of YA so don't expect the New Adult feel that is popular right now. Things tend to happen mostly off page so to speak. If you are very conservative be aware that sexual topics are addressed. If that will spoil the story for you- look elsewhere. I thought everything was dealt with realistically and with taste.
I almost can't say anything else without it being a spoiler. I will add that there is something addressed in this story that was really well done in my opinion. I can't say what that is without it being a spoiler but I can say that too many books deal with it in a cliched and trite way. I thought, instead, Nyrae Dawn did a great job with this part of the story and dealt with it in a realistic and truthful way. The characters involved were done well too.
This is a story that is paced a little differently than many books because of its four part structure. Each summer worked as a mini story and had an arc that worked overall to fit into the larger arc. I liked the pace but it might be slow for some since it is a little different. I liked that this wasn't overly angsty or dark. The characters are far from perfect but they do try and they do grow. There are set backs of course just like in life. But ultimately it is a satisfying story.
I might add more to this review at a later date under a spoiler tag since I really can't say much else without spoiling.

I thought, instead, Nyrae Dawn did a great job with this part of the story and dealt with it in a realistic and truthful way. The characters involved were done well too.
This is a story that is paced a little differently than many books because of its four part structure. Each summer worked as a mini story and had an arc that worked overall to fit into the larger arc. I liked the pace but it might be slow for some since it is a little different. I liked that this wasn't overly angsty or dark. The characters are far from perfect but they do try and they do grow. There are set backs of course just like in life. But ultimately it is a satisfying story.

At first, I thought to myself "Oh, another cliche book." But throughout reading this piece, I was beginning to eat my words. From the end of the first summer until the last, this book had me staring very hard at the pages, never leaving my reading nook up until I have reached the very end. Let me just say, THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC.
Main characters are Charlotte Rae Gates, more commonly known as Charlie to the people in their place called the Village. Her best friend who always helped her is Alec Andrews. Charlie loved the Village until recently. Both of them growing up together, they thought that the future is already planned out for them and with their future rooted in the Village. Along came the Chase boys one summer and everything changed for Charlie.
When Nathaniel Chase came into her life, Charlie discovered more about herself and where she wants to direct her life. Along with Nathaniel, his brother Brandon, Alec, and the events in their lives, the characters grew up.
I really adore the characters especially Charlie and Nathaniel. Throughout the book, I sensed them mature, as if I was reading a journal entry because of how they acted and how it differed as years passed.
This story was told from two points-of-view: the view of Charlotte and the view of Nathaniel. In this sense, the readers get to learn of the views of both characters and most importantly their struggles as they faced the unkown future ahead of them.
This book just goes to show just how much maturity is needed in order for love to work. It also spoke of TRUE LOVE. Yes, you read that right. I say true love because they ....well, GO read the book and find out ;-)

I devoured this YA book. The story was breathtaking. Charlie is so strong and selfless and it was so hard to read the emotional turmoil that she faces on a daily bases. How can she leaves and follows her dreams when other ppl needed her so much? She's the most selfless character I've ever read about and for that, I admire her nobility.
The development of her relationship with Nate was paced in a realistic manner. It wasn't instant love, thank gosh, but she knew it was one of those type of moments where meeting him the very first time would change her life. I love Nate in every way. For a teenager, he's deep.
The author threw an unexpected curveball and I was caught off guard. I did NOT see that one coming at all.
I'm glad I came across this book. If you want an angsty YA novel, this is the one. No descriptive sexual scenes, but the chemistry these two have is more than enough. Being able to experience their love through Charlie & Nate's eyes was a gift. The book is a standalone novel, but I can definitely see a potential in a sequel about their college life.

Nyrae Dawn did what she always does. She wrote a great, unputdownable book. As with several other of her books, I have a major league book crush on the female protagonist.
This is undoubtedly going to be on my Top-Ten Books of the Year list. Over the course of 4 summers we get to watch a set of characters grow and change in believable ways. As they get older their worldview changes believable, their relationships change, and we learn new things about all of them.
Nyrae writes such believable people you always feel as if they are people you really know or knew. their triumphs feel like your own, and their tragedies cut you deeply. I absolutely LOVED everything about Four Summers! This is a perfect story to read on a day where you have nothing to do because you'll want to keep reading until the entire thing is completed - which is exactly what I did! I love how Charlotte and Nathaniel's story is told not only through the span of four summers but also through each of their perspectives.
From the very beginning I had butterflies in my tummy whenever Nate and Charlie had moments alone, which led to me have major swoon-age for Nate. It's a wonderful feeling to not only grow with the characters but to be able to experience all the new and exciting things they deal with together. Simply put, Nate is currently my new book boyfriend crush!
Four Summers is a great read, one I look forward to enjoying again soon. And Nyrae Dawn is an author I intend to keep reading in the future.

I have read all of Nyrae Dawn's work and this is by far my favorite out of it all.
Four Summers is about friendship, discovering oneself and true love in a span of four years. All held in a small town wherein a teenage girl meets the boy of her dreams.
I love how the story was in alternating POV which gives us a peek on both Charlie and Nate's thoughts. It was written in such a clever manner. And the way Nyrae Dawn makes us see how each character grows without being rushed is amazing.
If I could give it more stars, I definitely would! This is beautifully written and I can't wait for another work by Nyrae Dawn! :)

From the innocence of a fifteen year old to the pressure of choices in early adulthood a beautiful sweet journey about growing up and discovering the person who you want to be.
Four Summers is a well written, well rounded story of love,discovery,heartbreak and life.

I’ve been staring at my computer screen for the last 15 minutes trying to decide whether or not to make this review spoiler free or tell you everything…I’ve decided to make you sweat a little, this review is spoiler free…
Starting at a nice steady pace, this book had great character and relationship development all the way through, as you get to watch the characters grow and mature over the four summers they are together. Filled with ups and downs, and some major twists to the story…which I never saw coming! Towards the end especially this book became completely addictive and I could not put it down!
The thing I liked most about this book was the character development. It was like watching the characters grown up throughout this whole story, as they became more mature, and more sure of themselves, and the feelings they had for each other. It’s hard to explain, but I felt as if I could feel the shift, and that change in the characters as they grew up and became adults. This is something that I think is often done really badly and I feel that it is a real testament to how good of a writer Nyrae Dawn is, as you feel like your there with the characters watching them change, and grow.
I believe everyone has certain key moments in their lives they’ll never forget. Moments marking the beginning or end of something. Moments that will always own a little piece of you. You can track decisions you make or paths your life follows and they always lead back to one of these defining moments.
This is one of them.
During the first summer, although Nate and Charlotte clearly have feelings for each other, you can also tell that they don’t really know what these feelings mean, as everything Charlotte thinks and feels is so different for her ~ she knows she likes Nate, and thinks she could even love him, however, their relationship still remains pretty platonic, and almost like a friendship with a crush. This chapter is told from Charlotte’s point of view, and really gives an insight in to her as a person. Not sure she wants the future that has been planned out for her, when Nathaniel walks in to her life, she wants to be seen as something other than the tomboy with no boobs, she wants him like her as much as she likes him.
“I think…if things were different. If we were closer… You’d be it for me, Star Girl. Is that stupid to say? That I think I could love you?”
As the story moves in to the second summer, which is from Nate’s POV, you could really feel how the characters had matured while they had been apart. Having dealt with a difficult year while he was away from The Village, Nate is a different person. Much more closed off with those around him, he seems to have lost the carefree, almost childish way about him, as the things he has had to experience throughout the year has made him grow up. However as different as he has become, his and Charlie’s relationship stays the same, as he feels he can open up to her in a way he can’t with anyone else, and she feels the same way.
The third summer was by far the best part of this book for me. Again told from Charlie’s POV, over the past few years, both her and Nate have grown up to be mature young adults, and soon a relationship develops between them. This is something that throughout the rest of the story you are waiting for, and as the characters were developed so well, you could feel every emotion which they did, and could feel that they were ready to be together. However, it is of course at this point that *spoiler* happens, and things change direction a little bit…
I really liked and respected Charlotte as a character. Always looking out for those around her, she helps her dad run The Village, and accepts the future she has there ~ marrying her best friend, and running the place, as she doesn’t want to let her dad down. Although this isn’t the life Charlie wants for herself, she is prepared to put her feelings, and dreams aside as she knows she has to be there for her dad.
The situation with Charlie’s dad is particularly heartbreaking in this book, specifically the part where they are fixing the cabin floor ~ I nearly burst in to tears at that part! As he is diagnosed with MS and she has to watch him deteriorate, and deal with that on her own, she is left constantly feeling guilty for wanting to leave The Village while also accepting it will never happen because as her dad gets worse, he is only going to need her more.
Nate is another great character in this novel, and although I didn’t like him as much as I did Charlie and as the hero, he didn’t make me swoon (I think he was a little too young for me), I still loved him as a character and how he was with Charlie. From reading the two chapters from his point of view, you really get a sense of how different she is for him, and how all the things that others maybe don’t understand about her, are all the things he loves the most. I thought this was extremely sweet, and is one of the reasons I liked their relationship as much as I did!
“What is it about the stars that you love so much?” he asks.
The answer comes quickly. “Because they’re infinite They’re miracles and anything is possible when you look out into the massive space that goes on and on.” Because I want that. I want to explore and see what’s out there and feel as free as those stars in the sky.
It was so amazing to watch their relationship develop and grow over the years, and turn, what was essentially a crush, in to full blown forever love! Charlotte and Nate understand each other in a way that no one else does, and it was so nice to read about them blend together as a couple, as they were always completely honest with each other, and confiding in each other no matter what.
The spoiler in this book is what really made it for me as I would never have saw it coming, and it changes the direction of the story completely.

What is so great about it is that the whole situation is done so well, that it leads you to see some characters in a different light, seeing, and feeling how much they have been struggling emotionally, throughout the whole story, without others noticing…
It’s been a long a long time since I read a book and it made me shout at my iPad screen, but this one did it for me! I really tried not to give too much away with this review as all the twists and turns throughout it, really are what make the book so good and they really shouldn’t be ruined! I would highly recommend this book, and was so happy to find out that the author is planning to write a companion novel about another couple in the book…
That’s what we’ve done together – grown up. The first time I saw her, she was this skinny tomboy, who stumbled over her words in front of me and I kind of liked that I made her react that way. That I gave her something that no one else did.
And then the next year, she was giving that to me.
We’ve grown and changed, screwed up, but at the beginning of each summer, we found each other again. Or maybe we never really lost each other.
4.5 stars!

Es una historia por así decirlo para leer mi y seguir adelante. Al inicio es una historia que promete mucho pero conforme pasan los verano como que aburren, fue desesperante como la personalidad de Charle y Nate es tan infantil. Ok es un libro para adolescentes pero nunca me había sentido tan frustrada como con ellos.
Charlotte, una chica con baja autoestima con mucha falta de valor por ella misma. Atrapada en que te ayudar hasta no poder mas a su padre. Una madre y hermana que no sólo la excluyen sino que la menosprecian. La necesidad de su padre por su apoyo creo que fue una gran carga para una simple adolescente. Aún así no veo nada malo en ser poco femenina como la hacen parece la hacia única. Su amistad y cariño hacia Alec es notable son tan Unidos que solo veo amor entre ellos.
Nate, es un chico normal de la gran ciudad no le vi mayor atractivo. Solo el hecho de fijarse en alguien tan distinta como lo es Charlotte. No me enamoro para nada. Le faltó demasiado y su apodo para ella guacala! En serio Chica estelar? Nada para sobre saltar.
Personajes que si adore y me gustaría saber saber más de ellos Alec y Brandon. Ellos si se ganaron mi kokoro. Sospeche de ellos desde el segundo verano! Me ellos cantan las historias como la de de los.
Esta lectura fue una tortura hasta que se supo más de Alec y Brandon lástima que fue al final.
Un drama esperado y un final que me lo supuse desde un inicio. Nate y Charle presentaron una relación muy infantil para su edad o no sé. Escenas de primera vez muy soñadas noo es que mi niñez fuera dañada y no soñara con estas situaciones.
Es un año ramo entonces inocente, bello al final de todo. Pero no volvería a leer el libro, de milagro termine la lectura.

I cannot believe anybody would think this was a bad read. I am officially a fan of Nyrae Dawn. At first, I was thinking of reading another book after reading some reviews of this book but then again since when did I let anybody's opinion affect me? So I decided to go on and read it and I just fell in live with it. So there's Charlotte Gates whom people always call Charlie. She's kind of a tomboy since she's not so girly like her sister, Sandie Anne. She has been living and helping out in The Village ever since. She was born there. It's their family's business. Her dad loves it there but she can tell her mom abd sister wants to leave and go someplace else. Charlie loves The Village and her dad but she really doesn't want to spend the rest of her life in The Village. Her bestfriend ever since, Alec also loves The Village and helps out. She always thought it was already written in the stars, Alec and her will get married and take over the village. Then one summer, when she was fifteen, everything changed. The Chase family vacationed in 3B and the first time Charlie laid eyes on Nathaniel Chase, she was in love. She even fell when they first met. One day, during their party, she sneaked out somewhere and just stared at the stars. Then she heard Nate's voice who followed her. Thus the start of their friendship. Charlie likes him, and she knows that he knows it. They become close friends and then one day, he was gone. They decided to keep in touch and they did-until Nate decided to stop writing. Second summer comes. The Chase family went to the Village again and Nate explained to Charlie why he stoppes writing. It's because of a mistake he did. They work it out and hang out again. Nate never really liked Alec and Brandon, Nate's older brother, hangs out with Alec. They kissed for the first time. They agreed to keep in touch again. Third summer. They date and they tell each othet about it but they know that what they have is always gonna be there. The third summer, they skinny-dipped and made love for the first time. They still sneak out at night. Charlie's mom and sister left the Village and her dad in diagnosed with MS. One night, the night before the Chase family will leave, Charlie followed Nate or so she thought. It was Brandon with Alex. And they were kissing! Alec saw her and tried to explain and kissed her. That's when Nate saw and he got mad! Of course, Charlie couldn't tell since it wasn't her secret to tell. Nate ripped off the necklace that they both have, a star and walked away. The Chase family left taking with them the plans of Charlie and Nate to have a long-distance relationship and make it work. ): Fourth summer. Nate is going off to college. He receives a text from Charlie saying she's in New York and wants to talk. He was still mad but decided to talk anyway. He acts like a jerk towards her and regret it.
Charlie: I missed you.
Nate: You wrecked me, Charlotte. Really wrecked me, but I missed you too.

Nate's mom is also pregnant. Brandon decided to tell Nate about him being gay one night and explained what really happened that night. His mom was having het baby so they went to the hospital. With Charlie and Alec. Nate realized that he was wrong and talked to Charlotte. They decided to always be together.
