Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Sometimes it's just best to get the hell out of Dodge. After turning an ancient vampire to dust and stirring the Coven into a mob of pitchfork- and torch-bearing vampires, Chris Gordon thinks it might be time for a road trip. So, leaving Tanya to calm the troubled masses, he heads south to help a North Carolina Pack with some demon troubles. But with beautiful Stacia Reynolds in the shotgun seat and his trusty companion, Awasos, Chris just might find more trouble out of the Big Apple than in it as he follows the blacktop south. It's demons and witches and bears, oh my.

The series is a fast paced and fun pulp UF. The world-building is a bit simplistic and the plot and story are full of tropes and flaws but none of them really hurt the series all that much as the characters are (usually) a likeable bunch and the story itself is engaging and fun. It all has the feel of a fun action movie and managed to hold my attention from start to finish.

Sadly this 5th instalment of the Demon Accords series turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. The main reason for that was the fact that the main character was just not as likeable as normal. Chris is usually an affable guy. He definitely has flaws but lacks the macho arrogance of a lot of characters, despite his power, so is usually fairly easy to root for. Not this time around for some reason! I could have lived with him lusting after Stacia for half the book as we at least got a reasonable explanation for that (eventually) but after the incident that damaged his memories he morphed into a bit of an asshole who's first instinct was to respond to everything with violence and aggression. That definitely hurt my ability to like him and that in turn damaged my ability to enjoy the story. This is basically a mindless action series where the villains (demons, vamps, weres, and evil humans) are completely throwaway so it was important that Chris and his friends were a likeable lot!

In terms of story set up this was like the last instalment of the series in that it felt like a story of a few distinct parts. First bit was Chris and Stacia on the road investigating a case of possession. A were pack in another state had a few of their kids possessed by demons! This bit of the story was the best bit. The creepy demon haunted house had a fun horror story feel to it and on top of that we got a bit of murder/revenge story arc thrown into the story to keep things interesting. We also got to learn a bit more about witches and magic. The second part of the story was less fun. After the memory damaging incident Chris and Stacia returned home to New York. This mostly involved him meeting all the characters we are familiar with again. It should have been pretty fun but instead was more annoying as second time around Chris was a total asshole. The third phase of the story mostly just focused on mindless demon bashing and heavy action as Chris had to save an abducted kid. That bit of the story was a bit boring but it did feel like it was setting up some stuff for the future books.

One of the few good things in this instalment was the expanded role for Stacia. She was a pretty fun support character and definitely a lot different from Chris's vamp friends. It was also fun to see how they all reacted to her. Well, mostly fun, as Tania's raging jealousy damaged her character a bit. One can only hope Conroe resists the temptation to go with a full blown love triangle/harem romance in future instalments. I spot the next book in the series actually has a new lead character. Usually I hate that but this time it might work out for the best especially if the new lead gets paired with one of the support characters already developed in this main story arc of the series!

On the whole I'd rate this one a bit of a disappointment but Conroe still manages to have a fairly engaging writing style despite the annoying flaws that litter the story so I'll give the next book in the series a go and live in hope that it will fix a few of the additional flaws that damaged this instalment.

Rating: 2.5 stars. I'm going to be kind and round up to 3 stars but this was definitely the worst book in the series. The next will have to show a bit of improvement.

Audio Note: I think James Patrick Cronin did a decent enough job with the audio.

"Fallen Stars," the 5th installment in John Conroe’s "Demon Accords" series, published in 2015, delivers a pulse-pounding blend of urban fantasy, action, and supernatural intrigue, with James Patrick Cronin’s narration bringing the story to life. We follow Chris Gordon, a supernaturally gifted protagonist, as he navigates a world of vampires, werewolves, and demons. Conroe’s storytelling, paired with Cronin’s steady performance, makes this a compelling listen for fans of the genre.

The story picks up with Chris on the run after a dramatic confrontation with an ancient vampire that stirs the Coven into a frenzy. Leaving his vampire girlfriend Tanya behind to manage the fallout, he embarks on a road trip south to assist a North Carolina werewolf pack with a demon problem. Accompanied by his loyal companion Awasos and the alluring Stacia Reynolds, Chris faces new challenges that test his abilities and loyalties. Conroe excels at crafting high-stakes action sequences, blending supernatural battles with gritty realism. The introduction of Native American folklore adds a fresh layer to the series’ mythology, enriching the world-building without overwhelming the listener. The dynamic between Chris and Stacia introduces tension, hinting at a potential romantic conflict that keeps the narrative emotionally engaging.

Cronin’s narration is a highlight, delivering a consistent and professional performance. His ability to differentiate characters through subtle vocal shifts - whether it’s Chris’s determined grit, Stacia’s confident charm, or Awasos’s animalistic presence - enhances the listening experience. Cronin’s steady pacing suits the fast-moving plot, ensuring that action scenes feel intense and character moments resonate.

The book’s strengths lie in its infectious pacing and Conroe’s knack for creating likable characters. The road trip setting offers a refreshing change from the urban backdrop of previous entries, allowing Chris to grow as a character outside the vampire-dominated narrative.

"Fallen Stars" by John Conroe is an enjoyable, action-packed addition to the Demon Accords series, best suited for listeners who relish supernatural thrills

Rating 5.0 stars

Re-read for the 3rd time this year October 2019.

Re-Read May 2019. Initial review below:

Again this is a rating for the entire series so far and not this specific book. In fact out of all of them, this was probably my least favorite . It also seems like the next books are going to head in a slightly different direction. At least, that is the impression I got at the end of this book.

Still really like the series, I am just worried about where the story is going.

John Conroe's books are just plain fun. While reading "Fallen Stars," it occurred to me a few of the things I really enjoy about John's stories. First, John does a great job creating characters. The reader will love and enjoy sitting back and reading the interactions between the characters. Second, while the books are part of a series, they each have their own story line with satisfying endings. Finally, one can never complain that John's book are slow paced. While Chris and Tanya are a formidable.duo, John balances it with the characters dealing with daily problems. For example, in your life you may have problems with in-law. Chris and Tanya have to deal with the whole vampire coven full of scheming, arrogant, vampires, half of which want Chris dead. Being a super killing machine, or having Grim, does not help. Even the super powerful have to deal with family. In the end, you can trust the John will make everything work out and give you a great tale along the way. It is always a fun journey. If you have enjoyed the other Demon Accords books, you will enjoy "Fallen Stars."

Solid book. I love what the author did with Chris in this one.

With what Barbriel was saying about choices

In book 4 you see Chris feeling a little out of place in Vampire Society - in this one, he's traveling with Stacia and hanging out with Weres...Maybe it's just me, but I like the combo of Chris/Stacia - they just seemed to mesh more. And Chris fit in well with the Weres. He didn't have any of that "outsider" feeling with them, just took life as it came, which seems to be how Weres also live.

I do wish there was more Demon hunting, maybe some Angel combat? Maybe in future releases - since Chris, Tanya, Stacia, bear/wolf is a pretty lethal combo. I don't see what else can phase them.

And I'm hoping there's more to the Demons then just, hey lets go terrorize this family for fun...Some kind of Master Plan?

Are you kidding me? amnesia? Seriously?
Is this book called Fallen Stars or "When I grow up, I'm going to have so much amnesia."?
You see, THIS is the stupidity you are forced to stoop to when you over power in book one or two. When you go from talented good dude to nigh invulnerable demigod in one book you (Bangs head on desk) have (Bangs head on desk) problems (Bangs head on desk) later.
So we get split personalities, evil twins, spin off books with a different cast of characters, retcons that muck it all up, and worst of all -Prequels. But nobody outside of parodies and low grade soap operas use amnesia.

**Let me get this straight... does anyone here *not* have amnesia?**

This book starts out fun, but WTF is going on? The end of the last book was so disorientating. It seemed like an obvious dream sequence, but I guess were just gonna roll with it? uh, okay. Things are sticky back home, go on a road trip with a sexy blond werewolf chick. sure.
Kooky explanations that half ass explain past mysteries, more hints, and yes- (sigh) the amnesia.
Reading this series is like dating someone who is crazy good at sex, but whom you just can't respect. It's a guilty pleasure. It's Oh SO much fun. but you keep asking yourself how long you can do.
Well I'm not kicking these books out of bed just yet, but I hope I didn't give them my real name.

I've been waiting for the asteroid, kinda thought that would happen. Also like the blasting the age back into the vampires. Kinda strange that Chris does not handle demons outside of the US. As God touched he would be needed everywhere there are humans and strife, but he stays primarily in the US and only travels just outside of the borders on tangent themes. In theory the demons should be gathering forces outside of the US and only keeping enough activity to keep him occupied, which would be a good idea except that he keeps getting stronger.

Best book in the series! If you've read the previous books you may be disappointed in the the direction the characters take. Make sure to read the note from the author at the end of the story. I'm very much looking forward to the next book in this series.

"I don’t think I have too many friends, let alone ones that are that honest with me. I can’t afford to lose a friend like that.”

3.5/5.0 Returning to the world, I am reminded of the good writing John Conroe has the potential to have. To be honest I dragged my feet reading the 5th of the series. Mainly because Regardless the writing was still clever and seeing the interactions between characters brought me back to when I really enjoyed the series, at its roots.

I really liked this book. Anyone who has made it this far in the series knows by now that Chris and Tanya will be able to plow trough just about any obstacle with near ease. In the first book or two, that kind of bothered me. Now, I just accept it and enjoy the ride.

We start as Chris is exiled from the Coven to keep him safe. I liked this approach and wish it would have gone on longer. The scenes with Stacia and the other pack were really good, and I think it gave Chris (and the Author) a chance to grow without the vampires overshadowing everything.

Something happens to Chris at the end of this segment that has long lasting consequences. I had hoped that Grim would be in charge completely while Chris got his feet under him. That would have been a hoot.

This book flows better than the previous book, which felt almost like three short stories. The ending promises an increase of scale and scope for Chris and Tanya. I will eagerly await the next installment.
I read the book in about a day, something about Mr. Conroe’s storytelling is infectious, and hard to put down.

What I liked:
Good plot
Excellent Characters
Character growth
What I didn’t like:
Still don’t feel like main characters can even be slowed down.
I’d like to see Tanya and Chris broken up for a while. Maybe I’m just emo, but there isn’t enough angst. 

Whatever good the author has done in previous books, is still strong in this one, so the series keeps the same quality. Now the author stated some concerns at the end that serves to clarify why he used such a risky move in this book, and I have to say that as well stated it was there really wasn't such an impeding need for it. Yes Chris so far has come up as an 'OP' character, but so has been shown to be the Vampires, his mate, the Bear-wolf were and a couple of other characters and to shown their vulnerability. Even so Chris is still incomplete to be considered trully unmatched, as nice as the 'Grimm' angle is usefull so far, till he completely merges with it, would still pose a major flaw in him in my eyes.

This is another action packed installment in the Demon accords series. This book brings a lot of major changes to Chris Gordon's life, not all of them good as witchcraft and demons combine to make his exile from the Coven not exactly relaxing.

I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the last one. While there have been major changes for Chris and some relationship building most of it has been in a regressive sort of way. I'll still be happy to pick up the next book in the series but this novel is both a turning point and change in pace compared to the books before it though for some odd reason this book seemed a lot shorter than the previous ones though it most likely wasn't.

The protagonist losing the memories for essentially this entire book series was a huge turn off for me. I've gotten used to the Gary Stu abilities of the protagonist. This just seemed almost like a reset to pre-book 1.

I looked ahead at the synopsis of future volumes in this series and think I am done. Many are told from different character perspectives and do not tie in well to the Chris Gordon story. This other protagonist is introduced at the very end of Fallen Stars and book 6 is his story. After this, it almost seems like every other book is a Chris Gordon book and the others from the new protagonist or ties into him.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Continuing my reread of the series. Chris has to be away from the Coven for a while because of events in the previous book. He heads to Virginia with a liaison from the NYC lycanthrope pack.
There are rifts opening in various places to Hell (for lack of a better term) Christian is using his powers to close them. While in Virginia he is attacked and there is a lingering health issue that he will have to deal with.
Excellent series. Main character is a bit overpowered if you have an issue with this.

How to solve the "Superman problem?" When your character gets too strong, the reader loses their concern in any conflict situation. Traditionally, either stronger antagonists are introduced or the protagonist suffers a weakening.

It was with some trepidation that I watched Conroe choose to weaken Chris. It was handled well. As at the end of this book, I'm still wary. Please don't let it got wrong.

This one was not a good as the last one. The last 2 Books have been really epic, this one was a bit lame in comparison and left a lot to be desired. I'm not saying it was bad you know? Just that it could have been so much better. It deserves 3.5 stars though.

While Chris might indeed be OP it fits with the story and frankly it's nice a refreshing to read a story where the main character IS OP and doesn't get his arsed kicked every other fight then suddenly gain new powers or insight that only lasts till the start of the next book!

A disappointment. First the very dissatisfying ending of the last part of the series which led to yet another „oh no, we need to be separated“. This time amnesia on top of it. I don’t need Chris to re-explore the vampire world. I already had all of that. If the only point thats supposed to motivate the reader to continue is the repeated „will they be back together“ angsty questions, then this doesn’t stand out compared to any cheap romance novel.
Honestly I had no fun reading this. It pissed me off to be more accurate. I really liked the most of book 4 and mostly skipped through this one in the hope the story would pick up again. Thats not to mention how the problem of „oh no, every vampire wants to kill you, run“ got resolved. Granny was scheming so its not that serious and Tanya threw a hissy fit, so its over now, is a pretty cheap solution to the problem.
Ultimately what I want to say is: The whole plot of this book and the ending of the last one, felt incredibly forced. Reading through the authors note I understood that the amnesia was the goal, as that is a problem the author came into contact in his personal life. And while I do feel sorry for that, it doesn’t change the fact that I simply don’t want a main character, whose character development of the last FOUR books, gets thrown away. And no, one sentence about apparent down- and bonding time, does not make up for the description of said time. Especially after stating that similar experiences do in fact not lead to the same relationships. First saying he lost memories, but then simply following with - he made similar memories - is just lazy writing.

Awesome

If I had listened to the first review of Conroe’s first book in his Accord series I would have missed out on everything. I have been reading this series non stop from the first book and have no intention of stopping until the very end.

Conroe’s non typical style of world and character building is quite unique. I like that I learn a little bit more about his characters and their world with each new book in the series. He makes these side stories and jump to heart of the real story he wants to tell.

He doesn’t spend 5 books wasting time world and character building while readers wait for the real fun at book 8. Amazing.

Goes to show that following norms whether it’s writing a book or building a plane doesn’t make the end result any less enjoyable or awe inspiring than others. In fact this series is one of the most enjoyable I’ve read in a while.

Conroe doesn’t pretend that this isn’t a story and he spins it in the he wants it to be while keeping it as real as it possible can. I love it!

I can’t fathom why folks want to read fiction, yet want the stories to be non-fiction at the same time.

As far as I’m concerned an author weave a story any which way it comes to them. It’s suppose to be a story that entertains and engage. Full stop. It’s an not English Literature... or it could be if u want to confuse yourself.

I love every single book so far. I will follow this series to the very end and hope he has loads more stories to share.

Keep it up mister!

Decent but to much feels contrived

I read through the first few books and was pleasantly surprised. I thought that this would be my chance to start branching out into slightly different genres. Problem is that this author has a tendency to throw more and more contrived plot points in as the story progress. The story should flow more, not less, as you get deeper into it.

I admit I'm biased. I'm more likely to put up with plot armor or out of no where events when it benefits the protagonist. But when it's to protect or help some big baddie it's less excusable. For me, bad guy's need to flow naturally from the setup. It means almost nothing for me if they are protected but plot armor and contrivance and then are defeated by the MC's 'sheer grit;' just pointless.

That's not even including the constant separations from his "bonded."
[...everything's going fine. Oh no! Now we need to separate! There's just no other way. Oh, now we're back together again.]

Don't get me wrong. A lot, if not all, of that tension could create great depth to the characters and their relationship, and teach some good lessons. And it does to some degree. It just all feels a little too contrived to me. I need to be able to trust a story to not pull a catastrophe out of a hat cuz' the author got bored. No insult intended on this author though, just a hyperbolic point.

Everything changes

So we start with Chris going to solve a new case without his other half Tanya, but with Stacia, then he finds a new challenge and everything goes south.  We see first hand that no one is safe, and the blow he receives when a vampire assassin attacks, shows that even if their enemies fail, it doesn't mean they can't hurt him.  This is a whole new game, and we find, first hand just how vulnerable he really can be.  We see a very dangerous Tanya putting people in their place, and we see again how they are not supposed to be separated.
In a way it feels like we are starting again with this book, and I feel like I should be frustrated by this fact, but I'm actually delighted that we get to see something like this happening.  And we finally get the mystery of his alter names solved, even if you had already solved it by using a quick google search, still, it's good to see confirmation.
Also, Awasos is great!! I want one!!

Really good series

I am 5 books in, and am really enjoying the story and a lot of the characters. I have seen some people say Chris is too powerful, my opinion is that is nonsense. He exorcises demons, dodges in no particular order- vampire assassins, were assassins, the government, a crazy shadow group or three, the government, plotting vampires that are over 800 years old, portals to hell, the government, witches, a group that wants to capture him to experiment on him, everyone after his mate, and the most evil of all… the government. If he wasn’t as powerful as he is this would have been a 19 page short story, he would have been steam rolled that early. Let us also recap on exactly what he is…Angel with Vampire, Were and Demon essence in him, if anything he isn’t powerful enough, he is a one man army put here to deal with the issues of 10’s of thousands of supernaturals. How powerful would you need to be to be that man? ‘Nuff said

Chris is finally knocked down, nearly killed but he loses far more than anyone could guess

Christian has grown in power at exponential levels, but a bullet to the brain will kill anyone...

While Tanya and he are separated for a time due to Coven fears, a werewolf woman, Stacia, is ready to take advantage of his clean slate, but second thoughts stop her from going past sharing the truth with him.
Another paramour has cast her spell at Chris as well.
Finally demons, gates are appearing with greater frequency than Chris alone can handle as he bounces all over addressing demon attacks on more weres.

Exploring his loss of past is a truly interesting way to show some weakness in Chris, as memory is a fluid thing that we truly don’t have much control over. Imagine losing the last two, and most interesting, years of your life. Who could you trust?

Ok - guilty pleasure that is totally off-the-rails for believable action and death-defying assaults. Three basic storylines. Starts with demon possession of werewolf children and a dark witch grimoire. Related to that are a "love spell" that Chris and Stacia have to deal with as well as an attack by a coven. Chris loses 2-years of his memory via sniper and returns to a world that he doesn't know anything about. Toni is kidnapped and has to be rescued by Tanya and Chris. Grim stays front and center more in this book and that effects Chris's affect. He is more violent than usual and has darker thoughts. It seems hell gates are opening up all over the world and Chris is the only one that can shut them down. In many ways, this reminds me of the Brownstone book series by Anderle. It's going to be interesting how Conroe takes the series in new directions with upcoming books.

outstanding urban fantasy!!!

I read tons of Urban Fantasy, and one of my favorite elements is how the author decides on the interaction of modern people and technology with the supernatural. This series brings the relationship of supernaturals and modern tech to a whole new level! How deep the story goes with science, government, and real human emotions and interaction with the supernatural world. By far, John Conroe relates the most realistic approach of any author I've read! And, the plot lines are so superb, I can't put this book down! Amazingly real characters, nonstop unpredictable plot twists, emotional growth, superbly written dialogue, and a fallible MC you want to route for! In fact, the only negative of this series is how it has effected my sleep! I;m up all night reading these nonstop pager turners! Thank you John, you master word-smith!
