Pandora Hearts made me cry. Again.

With all the maneuvering of the Baskervilles, the grand scope of the story thus far, it's the quiet moments that are so poignant. Who - or what - is Oz? A doll that was loved into existence by Lacie? A puppet with Jack controlling the strings? A chain that destroys? Jun Mochizuki tells us through her story what it means to be alive, what it means to be loved. This realization for Oz is a powerful moment in the story, and perhaps a pinnacle moment as well if Oz can regain control over his body from Jack.

While Jack is most obviously the evil adversary of the story, the Baskervilles are not, and I can understand their pursuit and desire to eliminate Oz who is the gateway for Jack to continue existing. It makes Gil's faith in Oz that much more significant to the point of betraying his master, Glen. I feel for Glen, and I am curious to see where the story is going to go with him and whether we will see Leo again. I think we will.

This volume was a bit of a downer. Pandora Hearts is good at creating a sober mood. But, it's also so very good with its vast storytelling and wonderful character development. I might even be starting to like Gil, though Break will always be my favorite. The only drawback to this volume is that there truly was not enough Xerxes Break in it for my little fangirl heart (my husband will say that there was not enough Alice, and he's right on that score as well). Break's working his situation the best he can, so maybe next time we'll see him break free of his prison and cause some mayhem. I hope so.

Next volume in...July. I guess that's what happens when you catch up to Japan. Dang it. I've been spoiled with these every other month releases.

Development to the story and the escape point of the characters..
I just love uncle Oscar! What a wonderful guy! His love for Oz is so beautiful and helpful.
And Oz regained consciousness over Jack and that is all because the love of his uncle and friends! I am so proud of you, Oz!
And yes! Alice is finally back!
I felt bad for Xerxes Break though.. poor him (
And what the heck, Zai? I just hate you.

La triste historia de los Vessalius y de cómo Oz llegó a esa familia te hace sufrir.

Pero honestamente este tomo me saco mis lagrimitas por el tío Óscar , en serio que el poder cambia a la gente

Wonderful. It was a nice change of pace from the usual doom, gloom, and cliffhangers. I felt like getting to know Oscar was... filling. It made me sad sometimes, and he lost his way at others but even if he betrayed his own thoughts with the influence of others, there would always be someone else to pull him back on the tracks. Children are a big part of his life, whether he likes it or not. He's happy now, but he was happy then, too; Love is a powerful bond, something that can't just be ripped away without creating a gaping hole. I think Oscar became satisfied with his life by the end, having protected the ones he loved, and making many memories to always hold onto.

Side notes: Why is Leo taking Vincent and Barma specifically? And why to Sablier? What will they do?

How soon will Hatter die? Will he break out of his chains first?

Will Lottie rise up against 'Glen'? She seems horrified with what he's doing.

I'm happy that Oz finally rejected Jack, it was about time. Will Oz's body go back and forth like that of a metronome? Or will he continue growing old and die now that Jacks soul has crumbled?

Why did Gil have to burn off his entire arm? His oath was only on his wrist, right? He could've got a hook

So it turns out that Xai isn't AS much of a jerk as I thought he was, but he still didn't care for Oz or Oscar. Poor guy, played for a fool and strung along to do the kid's dirty work

Is Alice able to go in and out of the abyss now? Will she be the one to destroy the Intention of the Abyss? If the Intention of the Abyss is destroyed, will Alice's memories also leave as well? Will Alice disappear?

Poor Break! He's been captured, and when Vincent comes to see him in his cell, I was like, "WHAT IS HE GOING TO RESCUE BREAK THIS IS THE MOMENT OF WHICH I HAVE DREAMED THEY WILL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER," but what actually happens is that Break kind of taunts him and then Vincent beats the heck out of Break while he is chained to a wall. I keep forgetting about that thing where Vincent is evil. :P My ship may be on a doomed voyage.

Also, RIP poor Uncle Oscar! But I knew he was good all along.

This was hilarious:
Break used to be bullied awfully by his stepmother and older sisters. When he found out all his food contained*beep* he was so traumatized he could barely eat anymore. (I told him you could eat sweets since you had never been given any.)

Gahhh! So many feels. Uncle Oscar coming to terms with Oz, Gil being an amazing friend, Oz getting Jack out of his head after realizing that he isn't a nobody. Such a beautiful volume. I just...I can't explain how great this one was.

And guess what? BREAK IS STILL ALIVE! I'm so happy. 4 more volumes to go. If he and a few other characters can stay living, I will be euphoric.

Review for complete series

I'd like to start by saying that with my two decades of manga reading, Pandora Hearts has recently earned its way to being one of the best manga series I've ever read - and to think I almost didn't pick it up!

There's actually a bit of a story to it: Pandora Hearts was being released around the time I knew I would be moving overseas. At the time, I had no idea how moving to the other side of the world would affect my manga buying. Also at that time, I was working at a comic store with staff discounts at my disposal and I never had to worry too much about picking up whatever I fancied. When I first saw Pandora Hearts, I thought the art looked beautiful and this just might be a really good manga. It also struck me as a manga series that could go on for quite a while [which was a reasonably accurate assumption as 24 volumes is not a length I could commit to lightly]. Not knowing how I'd get my hands on manga or how long this series would be let me to putting it back on the shelf. And I confess, it was filled with quite a bit of regret.

When I finally did move overseas - a family friend had a good bye gift. The shape was easy to discern: it was undoubtably a manga volume. While thankful for receiving a gift, I was also nervous: having worked in a comic store, I knew for sure: I either already own it or am not interested in it. In addition, the friend in question doesn't know the first thing about manga. To my surprise, it was the first volume of Pandora Hearts which was probably the single only volume she could have taken from the shelf that wasn't already in my possession and did interest me. How she managed to pick out that one I don't know, but it's a coincidence I feel thankful for and, in some cheesy way, made me feel like it was just meant to be that I read Pandora Hearts after all.

Fast forward to 2023, I finally found the time to read this 24 volume series and am absolutely delighted. My original observation remains: the art is absolutely stunning. With the exception of a oneshot debut work, it's hard to believe that this is quite close to being a beginner's work - you'd not believe it just looking at the first volume's art.

My other thoughts are largely around how hard it is to praise a story you think is so thoroughly good as this one is. It's not really a plot you can explain to someone, it's a story you have to read for yourself as even the latest volumes will throw some surprises at you. But I think, besides the art, what really contributes a lot to this work are the characters. Oz might be our main character, but we have a large cast and they are all lovingly created. There's hardly a character you won't be able to like in one way or another, even the most broken of them. It's quite a feat to create a story that makes you care and worry about almost every character's fate.

And worry you can indeed: it has light and beautiful moments, but it is essentially a dark tale and you'll constantly worry whether the characters will make it through. Needless to say, there are losses throughout the story. There are plenty of twists and turns, things that will surprise and shock you.

I will also add that the plot is complex and not always easy to follow. Some characters have multiple names - this becomes even more difficult for some characters who also have multiple personalities who also have multiple names. Not everything in the plot made entire sense to me - it's hard to say whether they were plot holes, not explained well enough or I was simply missing something - a reread might answer that. But regardless, when these moments arose, I decided to just go with the flow and it didn't disrupt my reading experience at all.

Besides a bit of confusion here and there, I can't fault this series with anything. The pacing is well done, the 24 volumes were neither too long nor too short [something I often complain about] and it wrapped up nicely. For such a dark read, there's also a lot of soft story telling which just concludes this with a very wholesome ending. There is close to no romance but I wasn't missing it [and I'm a big romance reader] - the friendships and bonds between the characters were absolutely beautiful even without much romance thrown in.

I'm glad I did read this series and it is definitely going down as one of my favourites. Highly recommended.

Aw man. I liked Oscar. He was sweet. Finally, the whole camera thing was resolved and explained well. I really didn't understand it before but now I do. So Oz wanted Oscar to keep the camera because Oscar had promised his wife he'd use it to take pictures of their son but it's a shame he couldn't keep his promise since she died by Jack's unforgiving hand.

That scene with a young-looking Break swinging upside down on a tree branch surprised me. I didn't recognize him until Vincent said his name out loud. Also, that sweet memory of Gil cooking for Break since Sharon lied and told him Break was mistreated by his stepmother and two sisters and had to eat food mixed with something in it was just so hilarious and sweet to me.

Oh gosh, poor Oscar (referring to his past) ... :((( !!

But also, NOOOOO the ending!!!!
I just started to like Zai...

At least Jack disappeared, I hope for good this time!! <3

To see so many fans still gushing after Jack, after everything he's done... damn, y'all are really disgusting...

The bonus chapter was sweet tho.
Liam/Reim hasn't appeared for a while, it'd be cool to see him again. I mean, he was sleeping and only woke up during that earthquake, which was pretty funny lol, but time for him to get screentime again.

Finally some more Alice. The story is slowly reaching it's climax, RIP Oscar. He was a very sympathic and a great person, even tho he hadn't much screentime and I couldn't attach to him as much as I do with other characters. I wonder how Oz beat Jack though.
