The Rise of Adscendo

I'm not quite sure how to review The Rise of Adscendo. As a long-time Tomorrowland and SFF fan, a book about Tomorrowland is a pretty awesome thing.
So let's start with the physical book: It's very well made. Gorgeous hardcover, lovely artwork on the inside covers and chapter headings, very good paper gsm - this is a fantastic book as a physical object.
Onto the actual book itself. I'm trying really hard not to be a slightly grumpy old git, because I did warm to the book eventually, and I love what it represents. It tells the story of a fantastical society divided into guilds, including the Ateliers, who make things, the Windriders, who fly their flying suits to help others. And the lands are in danger; flying islands are crashing to the ground, and the waters are rising. In the midst of it all, Ro Swift, a windrider, finds an object that could help her to change the world forever - but as a very junior windrider from a 'bad' family, who will listen to her?
It's a superb world, but I couldn't help but thing what would Laini Taylor have done with it? Or Brandon Sanderson? Because it's very YA at times - it's got a lot of short sentences when longer, flowing prose would have created a more evocative image. There's quite a lot of 'tell' at the start when 'show' would have worked better. It just didn't quite conjure the magic I was hoping for.
As I said, I did enjoy it more towards the end, and Thorne's writing is perhaps more suited towards the faster pace in the last 100 or so pages, and I really did love what they were trying to achieve - I'm not quite sure who the book was pitched at, or how the team chose this style (because it is very classic YA at times), but for me, it was a bit clunky at times.
And that's a shame, because the world was lovely - all the colours, the birds, the beautiful islands, the magic system, the hope, the dreams, the hope for unity: it's all classic Tomorrowland. And it does get this across, it really does, but it's not quite as magical as it could have been.
As the book says, this is just the beginning, so if this is the first, before the main trilogy launches, there's time to warm up and find Tomorrowland's heart before the drop lands.

Het eerste boek van het jaar is een feit. Een boek uit de winkel van Tomorrowland. Een muziekfestival in verschillende jaarlijkse edities verspreid over de wereld. België, Brazilië, Franse alpen voor Tomorrowland winter en mogelijks een editie in Thailand. Maar waar ze het meeste voor gekend staan is hun mainstage. Dat brandde deze editie jammer genoeg af maar de organisatie deed hun best om toch een nieuwe stage te bouwen. Om hun festival nog uit te breiden naar andere mensen kwamen ze op het idee om de wereld van hun mainstage ook in een boek te gieten. Dit is dus apart van de boeken over The library of tomorrow. Het idee vind ik wel goed en het boek dat ik reeds las THE ODES OF ORBYZ was ik positief over. Deze keer las ik het eerste uitgebrachte boek. Dat over het podium van 2023, de wereld van Adscendo.
Welke auteur schreef dit boek?
Jessica Thorne nam het schrijven van het verhaal op zich. Thorne is mij onbekend moet ik eerlijk toegeven. Wat ik ontdekt heb is dat ze eigenlijk schrijft onder twee namen. Namelijk Jessica Thorne en Ruth Frances Long. Ruth meer voor fantasie verhalen en Jessica meer voor romantasy.
Even haar boeken bekeken maar geen enkele komt mij echt bekend voor.
Wat is het verhaal?
Het verhaal speelt zich af in de stad Arcadiana. Ro wil niets liever dan als windglijder te vliegen als een vogel. Gewoon vrij in de lucht. De stad is aan het zinken dus is vliegen de ideale oplossing. Bij het testen van een nieuwe vleugel loopt alles verkeerd en stort Ro richting haar dood naar beneden. Gelukkig wordt ze opgevangen door The golden Auric. Een grote mytische vogel waarvan men dacht dat ze niet echt waren en gewoon bestonden in de overgeleverde verhalen van de ouderen. De auric brengt Ro naar een plaats waar ze een ontdekking doet dat haar op pad zet om alles uit haar kunnen te halen om Arcadiana te redden. De stad maar ook zijn inwoners. Ze moet proberen een nieuwe toekomst te creëren waar de vier gilden, die nu de wereld draaiende houden, samenwerken om zo een paradijs te maken voor alleman en iedereen. Ro moet uitzoeken wie ze kan vertrouwen en wie niet. Maar wat als zelfs familie zich tegen haar keert?
Wat vond ik ervan?
Gewoon prachtig. Het was spannend van begin tot einde zonder stil te vallen. De personages zijn subliem en divers. De romance is ook aanwezig. En wat, dan voor mij, zeker een pluspunt is is de wereldopbouw. Een fantasiewereld moet fantasie uitstralen, verwondering oproepen en dit kan enkel door die wereld tot in de details uit te werken en dit is hier zeker gebeurt. De manier van omschrijven doet mij gewoon dromen van deze wereld met zwevende planeten en prachtige vogels die connectie maken met de mens. Maar gewoon ook de personages op zich. Elk krijgt zijn eigen karakter aangemeten, maar elk moet ook zijn mening naar de ander wat bijstellen. Die dynamiek maakt het af voor mij.
En dat einde dan?
Het einde lost alles op. Het trekt je mee naar die laatste pagina door hier en daar nog wat kronkels te geven en dan gewoon rechtdoor te gaan naar de ultieme oplossing.
Conclusie?
Tot nu toe ben ik elke keer blij verrast door de boeken van de Tomorrowland franchise. Deze keer terug getrakteerd op een wereld vol fantasie, vol prachtige personages en vooral een wereld die, of toch op het einde, belichaamd waarvoor men met het Tomorrowland festival wil gekend voor staan. Live Today, Love Tomorrow, Unite forever. En vooral een spannend verhaal dat je meetrekt doorheen die fantasiewereld in een strijd voor het goeie. Die je laat genieten van een divers palet aan karakters die het verhaal naar boven stuwen.
Ik kan ze gewoon maar aanraden.

This is such a pity because the hardcover is beautiful with sprayed edges and steampunk images inside. For a collector and for a fan of the Tomorrowland festivals it might be worth having, it is a very pretty book.
However, the contents, the actual story, didn't live up to expectations. This is a YA fantasy story that does nothing new. The setting, characters and plot all felt a bit shallow. And the prose was uncomfortably juvenile at times with a 'strong', annoying main character, Ro Swift, that spent half the book in tears. I'm not sure if the Rise of Adscendo is the first book in the trilogy or the prologue to the upcoming trilogy. Either way I won't be reading the rest of this series. There are far superior novels out there to be reading.
It felt like a poorly done copy-paste of Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and The Cinder Spires by Jim Butcher.
I just didn't care about any of the characters and for me that is paramount to enjoying any story.
If you don't like two dimensional characters, deus ex machina plot conveniences or a story written with preachy morals - then this isn't the book for you. It was an unexceptional and easily forgettable story.

3,5 stars, but that’s not an option.
I really love the TML concept and have always been longing for more when I entered the festival grounds after seeing the trailer. With this new fiction branch developing my prayers have been answered. So I’m coloured in a couple of ways.
The story is very good. It’s a complex whole that comes together very well in the end. I’m glad I finished it in time and am so looking forward to finding bits and pieces gathered around the festival area hinting towards this story. So for that I’d give it 4 stars.
The writing left me a tad bit disappointed at times. Maybe it’s because the author needed to give a whole lot of backstory and explain relationships while also developing the story in one book, but at times it felt like it was explained in a way that left me feeling like a child. A lot of repetition, a lot of sentences like “she knew he wouldn’t do that because she’s known him her entire life”. Hard to really explain what did it, but it pulled my general feeling about the book down a bit.
All in all happy with this and really looking forward to the trilogy that comes next!

for me this book was special because is went hand in hand with my first Tomorrowland experience. It could be because i’m relatively new to the genre, but some of the writing in here felt a little immature. Beyond that, I loved the message and the bird motifs throughout. I also felt that at times there were a lot of unnecessary details and other times not enough to accurately picture a scene. Overall it was a good novel with the sentiment of the beautiful global festival of tomorrowland.

The hardcover, the artwork inside, and the book as a book are great!
Personally, I loved the story, the city of Arcadiana, the magic, and everything the story represents, but I felt that the first part of the book was different than the second.
The first part was just a description, while the second part, around 150 pages, was the actual plot, the action, the love story, the plan, everything. So I felt that it was written in a rush and I didn't have time to enjoy it as it ended quickly.

So that's why this year's Tommorowland is so extensive this year! Yep beautiful story, capture magical-air borne setting of the festival, contains the theme of love+unity festival embodies and...better then I expected for a music festival tie in novel.
