Amy Yamada is one of the most prominent--and controversial--novelists in Japan today.  She burst onto the scene in 1985 with her short novel "Bedtime Eyes," which for critics embodied the spirit of the 'shinjinru'--i.e. Generation X-- in much the same way that Less Than Zero, Bright Lights, Big City, and Douglas Coupland did in the U.S. Bedtime Eyes is the first English-language publication of three of Yamada's novellas/short novels: "Bedtime Eyes," "The Piano Player's Fingers" and "Jesse." While all are centered around the relationship between a Japanese woman and a black American man, each explores love, sex, and the vast gulf between from different and equally revealing viewpoints. Starkly imagined and sharply observed, Bedtime Eyes introduces to the English language some of Yamada's best known and most influential work.

About the author

Amy Yamada (AKA 山田 詠美, Yamada Eimi) born February 8, 1959, is a popular but controversial contemporary Japanese writer who is most famous for her stories that address issues of sexuality, racism, and interracial marriage, topics not typically discussed openly in Japanese society.

Born in Tokyo as Futaba Yamada, she lived in several places around Japan due to her father's job. This transient lifestyle forced her to confront issues of separation and bullying, issues that many of her protagonists also deal with.

According to her interview with the Japanese magazine Bungei, during middle school she was moved by African-American soul music and began to read any novels she could find written by black people, or featuring black people. She held a job in the Roppongi district of Tokyo, an area rich with foreigners.

After graduating from high school in 1977, she entered Meiji University's Literature Department, but dropped out before graduating. After a short stint writing and drawing manga, she began writing novels in 1980. Though her works garnered some attention, even receiving praise from Japanese literary critic Jun Eto (江藤淳 Eto Jun?), she only achieved widespread recognition in 1985, when Bedtime Eyes won the Bungei Prize. In writing Bedtime Eyes, Yamada drew upon her experiences with black people and black culture and combined them with the Japanese literary tradition.

In 1996, "Trash" was published in English translation by Kodansha International (translator: Sonya L. Johnson). In May 2006, three of Yamada's novellas (Bedtime Eyes 「ベッドタイム･アイズ」, The Piano Player's Fingers 「指の戯れ」 and Jesse 「ジェシーの背骨」) were published in English translation (translators: Yumi Gunji and Marc Jardine) as a single volume by St Martin's Press under the collective title Bedtime Eyes.

In Yamada's second collection of works, Jesse's Spine, Yamada depicts the experiences of a woman who is learning to adjust to life with her lover's child from another relationship. The writing style of this work has been compared to William Saroyan's novel, Papa You're Crazy. Through her depiction of the child's perspective on the world, her book was a critical success, earning her a nomination for the Akutagawa Prize for new authors. In her short novels Classroom for the Abandoned Dead, Afterschool Music, and I Can't Study, Yamada tackles the topics of childhood life, bullying, and school life. In an interview with Bungei Shunjū upon winning the Akutagawa Prize, Risa Wataya and Hitomi Kanehara named Yamada's Afterschool Music as one of their major influences, explaining that her works were one of the greatest depictions of modern Japan.

Đại khái, mình lôi cuốn này ra đọc lại :( cũng chẳng vì lý do gì cao siêu vạn đại cho lắm, chẳng qua mở lại fb bỗng dưng thấy ảnh của 2 bạn (hoặc 1.5) mà mình từng "nghiện" hồi trẻ thù lù, chình ình, liên tiếp đập vào mắt và nhẹ nhàng hành hung trí óc :( tiếp nữa đi đường lại nghe loáng thoáng đâu ấy về "Đôi mắt đó vẫn ở trên giường" (chẳng nhẽ do bàn về xiếc trong Rừng Na Uy đã quá xưa rồi nên giờ ngta chuyển sang bàn về xiếc trong cuốn này).

Nói chung đây là 1 cuốn của Nhật rất chi là kiểu Nhật giống như bao cuốn của Nhật khác :| Tác giả Nhậtluôn nghĩ ra những khung cảnh oái oăm, kỳ quặc, điên cuồng nổi loạn, nặng nề u uất, lạ lùng, sửng sốt và phấn khích tới tột cùng với sự sửng sốt do tự mình gây ra. Đã thế còn nửa nạc nửa mỡ, nữa ông nửa thằng, văn phong có gì đó tây tây nhưng tâm tư thì sâu kín, trầm luân kiểu á đông chính cống, chú trọng vào tình tiết rành mạch tưởng phô bày và lộ hàng hết ra ai ngờ đâu chỉ tơ hơ, chấm phá nho nhỏ, nổi gió lên to lắm tưởng chết vì bão tới nơi nhưng chỉ lửng lơ thế thôi, cuối cùng chết vì gió độc :-<

Suy cho cùng cho dù bạn là người sinh ra với IQ 380, đánh Toccata and Fugue in D Minor ngang ngửa trình Bach, đọc hiểu sâu sắc toàn tập Hegel hay có hệ số Elo cờ vua cao ngất ngưởng như tỷ giá NDT thì bạn cũng vẫn rất dễ có thể bị nghiện như mình hoặc như "cơn nghiện Spoon" của Kim. Thế nên, hãy thật cẩn thận, vì tất cả chúng ta đều là con người :-<

Amy's not winning many friends by page 5: "His dick wasn't the kind of disgusting, red cock that white men have, nor was it the pathetic, infantile thing of Japanese men, the kind that doesn't do a thing for you until it's inside you."

Is true that a Japanese guy's pubic hair is more like seaweed than a white guy's?

The third story was a bit pointless. The first two were okay if you want to read about a Japanese woman having rough sex with Black guys.

This was actually 3 novellas, and the last one was actually pretty good, except for its last page or so. But it was nowhere near good enough to save this book from the gutter, because the first 2 are some of the worst things I've ever read.

I guess I'm a little biased, but I just can't stand most feminist porn, because, I don't know, I guess I'm just simple, but can anyone tell me why self-identified feminists always write such blatantly abusive, masochistic sex scenes? I actually can't think of a single sex scene written by a feminist writer that wasn't violent, and the women in these scenes LOVE it, like, somehow it's a show of a strong woman to enjoy getting the shit kicked out of you. Here's a funny part:

"'Fuck me, you bastard!' I screamed.
'You dirty bitch...' Leroy's fingers stopped moving.
He gave me a look of utter contempt. I was crying now, desperate for his touch.
'So you want me to fuck you, do you?'
I looked up at Leroy, tears in my eyes, and nodded. He spit in my face.
'Why don't you just kill me?'
'No,' he said quietly. 'I can do better than that.'"

Here's another funny part:
"I moaned, and Leroy slapped me hard across my face. My lip split and blood poured out. He hated me now. But I knew he loved me, too. He continued thrusting, trying to humiliate and defeat me, and I let him do what he wanted. I'd pretended not to recognize his genius and now I was being punished. He could do as he pleased with me. He'd earned the right.
I could tell he was feeling the same way now that he had two years earlier when he had fucked me by the piano. As soon as people had begun to recognize his talent, he had started a new life as that pianist. I wondered what else I could possibly do for him. Perhaps the only thing I was capable of was crying to make him feel superior.
I nearly lost consciousness a number of times, and Leroy was obviously very satisfied with his work. When he had finished I couldn't speak. My hair was plastered to my forehead with sweat and he brushed it away with his fingers so he could look into my eyes.
'Now I'm going to be living for the touch of your hands,' I confessed."

This is pretty typical of the garbage that makes up the first two thirds of this book. The last story was about the trouble a new girlfriend has with her boyfriend's 11 year old boy, a tragic kid totally a child of parents who hate each other, and it was actually pretty interesting.

I get the feeling Amy Yamada really wants to be American, she's totally obsessed with black Americans and black American culture, music, food, and in the last story, I didn't even know where it was supposed to be set. The main woman is Japanese, and the ex-wife of her boyfriend is Japanese, but everyone else in the story, the women and men both, have English names, and the kid asks for 5 dollars to buy a cheeseburger. What the shit?

Are Japanese people racist ? This book received a prize. He had a great success. About what is it? An history of love between a Japanese woman and an American black. For Japanese it is the top of the transgression. A friend spoke to me about their contempt for the inhabitants of Okinawa who have dark skin. Spoon, the black character has all the stereotypes: robber, deserter, traitor and of course equipped with a large penis. For the rest it is level of the Harlequin collection. Bad novel.

Yamada Eimi emerge nel mondo della letteratura - questo è il suo romanzo d’esordio - in un momento in cui questa si sta profondamente trasformando in Giappone.

Abbiamo già avuto modo di alludere a questa trasformazione profonda parlando, per esempio, di Murakami Ryū. Infatti, gli scrittori che sono protagonisti di questo momento di cambiamento così determinante, così importante per la letteratura giapponese contemporanea sono Murakami Haruki, Murakami Ryū, Banana Yoshimoto, e Yamada Eimi appunto.

Scrittori tutti molto diversi l’uno dall’altro, ma che condividono la volontà, il desiderio di prendere le distanze dal mondo della letteratura giapponese tradizionale, dalla letteratura degli anni precedenti, ancora ancorata a canoni che vengono considerati ormai superati. Questi autori propongono una letteratura diversa. Una letteratura diversa che dia voce alla generazione dei giovani, a cui loro stessi appartengono, che racconti le loro paure, le loro inquietudini, i loro desideri, le loro aspirazioni, ma soprattutto che si avvalga di un linguaggio accessibile. Accorciano la distanza fra la pagina letteraria e il lettore.

I due protagonisti, infatti, sono Kim, una giovane donna giapponese cantante di night club, e Spoon, il suo amante afroamericano, un disertore. E la cifra del romanzo è proprio l’erotismo: un erotismo che scivola quasi nella pornografia in alcuni tratti. E a colpire, ovviamente, è in primis il fatto che l’autrice sia una donna. Una donna che non esita a raccontare il desiderio, la passione anche femminile in modo tanto esplicito e tanto diretto.

Yamada Eimi è una delle prime autrici a parlare in modo così esplicito del desiderio femminile, e sicuramente attraverso gli occhi di Kim l’autrice racconta il desiderio femminile senza alcun velo, senza alcuna reticenza. E in questo senso, di primo acchito, l’impressione è che in realtà vada a decostruire non soltanto uno stereotipo ma anche un modello di femminilità giapponese ancora vivo negli anni del boom economico.

Amy Yamada ha fatto scandalo in Giappone con questo romanzo. Si parla di sesso in modo molto esplicito, e a farlo è una donna. Una donna che, tra l'altro, ha una torbida relazione con un soldato di colore (cosa che ha fatto ancor più parlare).
Non l'ho apprezzato più di tanto perché non mi coinvolgono particolarmente lo stile o il modo di raccontare, e la storia di per sé non mi ha catturata.
Tuttavia è interessante leggerlo e conoscerlo nel panorama della letteratura giapponese, specie per la rivoluzione che ha saputo dare.

Bedtime Eyes is a collection of three novellas centering on dysfunctional relationship between a Japanese woman and a Black American.

In Bedtime Eyes, erotic dancer and occasional prostitute, Kim falls in love with a black American navy deserter, Spoon, who constantly abuses her. Their love affair is as real as it is cocaine fueled.


Now famous jazz musician Leroy returns to Japan to give Ruiko a test of her own medicine in the sadomasochistic story of The Piano Player’s Fingers. Ruiko was the dominatrix before stardom hits Leroy. After years of not seeing each other, he wants the tables turned. It is now Ruiko who comes to him and submits to his whims. His revenge proves to have fatal consequences.


Jesse is a tale of a young woman and an eleven-year old boy competing for the love of a middle-aged man. Coco is having a hard time pleasing her lover’s son, Jesse, who often ignores her. When her husband has to visit his dying father in San Francisco, Coco and Jesse are forced to settle their differences once and for all.


All three stories relate the confusion between love and hate and the irony of love being simultaneously simple and complex.


Bedtime Eyes is extremely provocative and shocking yet heartwarming. Amy Yamada’s stark and vivid depiction of consensual sex liberates her readers of social taboo. It is not all sex, it is an overpowering prose that is reminiscent of contemporary Japanese writers like Ryu Murakami.

For the better half of this collection of novellas the only word that I could associate with it was mediocre. Too much sex talk and definitely overmuch abuse, both physical and emotional coming from both sexes. But I wouldn't put this at the same level with modern western erotica/romance. It is without a doubt better than that. There's something compelling about Yamada's writing, despite all that carnal imagery, that becomes more apparent with the end of the second novella: The Piano Player's Fingers and is more than evident in Jesse. For me, this compelling something is her knowledge of human nature, and the apparent ease with which she explores human nature through sexuality.
That being said, I couldn't really stomach the abuse, at times I almost felt nauseated... On top of that, the subject of the novellas is a much used one. Maybe for the time(written in the '80s) and for the Japanese literature they did come as a shock, but to me, they were nothing new.

The writing is passable but unremarkable, and the stories themselves suffer from an excruciating sameness-- angsty Japanese woman hunts down black American men, has fucked up relationship, meanwhile fetishizing their music, food, vocal cadences, and genitalia. If an American wrote this, they'd be (rightly) accused of racism. While I recognize the equivalency can't really be made, it does reveal something problematic in Ms. Yamada's novellas.

Sometimes you think that she's trying to write porn. But all of these stories already exist in that form, and they're much more entertaining, on Xhamster.

Mình vẫn k hảo những kiểu viết văn mà xen những cảnh sinh hoạt bê tha bệ rạc hay kiểu tả cảnh phê thuốc của bộ phận mà người thường như mình không bao giờ tiếp xúc tới để câu kéo độc giả và thường những quyển sách như vậy mình sẽ luôn thấy sự giả tạo kệch cỡm (như Bậc thầy chẳng hạn). Thế nhưng một điều kỳ cục là những tp của Nhật lại không thế. Nó bốc lên cái mùi thối rữa dơ bẩn khiến cho mình nghĩ rằng bản thân nv sống ở đó cũng đang dần thối rữa theo. Không hiểu sao mình thấy đau đớn cho họ, và cho cả những đoạn tc xé ruột xé gan, yêu tới mức nào mà muốn hòa tan vào nhau như thế, sự chia xa ngay trong khi còn yêu nhau đau đớn đến mức nào, và Amy đã diễn tả nó chỉ bằng vài dòng ngắn ngủi ra sao...

Một câu chuyện tình tay ba (cũng không nghiêng về người thứ ba lắm). Nữ chánh yêu nam chánh rồi kể cho nữ phụ nghe vấn đề của mình. Rồi lòi ra nữ phụ yêu nữ chánh suốt từ đó đến giờ. Rồi nhờ đó mà nữ chánh biết mình yêu nam chánh như thế nào. Rồi nam chánh bị bắt lại (do là quân nhân đào ngũ) nên nữ chánh mới rõ lòng nam chánh.

Xuyên suốt câu chuyện là sự khát khao tình thương của mỗi con người. Bắt đầu từ bản năng đến cách suy nghĩ và hành động. Thật ra là cốt truyện không có gì quá gay cấn. Quan trọng là cách tác giả miêu tả tình yêu bằng tình dục trần trụi thôi. Sẽ có đọc giả tìm thấy những câu chữ đồng điệu với suy nghĩ của mình, nhất là những ý nghĩ về dục vọng mà không phải ai cũng can đảm nói ra.

Nhưng mà mình không thích kiểu truyện như thế này. Hay tại mình chưa yêu ai hết lòng 😳

There are 3Eimi Yamada´s short novel from 1985-1986 in this book. The first, Bedtime eyes, is about heroine´s love for black American soldier nicknamed Spoon, who is sometimes very tender and sometimes very violent toward her. He is very sexy for her and she loves his body, but she learn very slowly to love him (his soul and mind, his behaviour). She manages this at last, but he is deserter from his army base and he is taken into prison for desertion. She is devasted and she swears she will be love him forever. (This remind me on ending of Snakes and earrings by Hitomi Kanehara.) The third, Jesse, is about the similar thing, but her black lover is only tender and very good man, but he had 11-years-old son Jesse, who hates her and tortures her. But they learn to live together at last.
Eimi Yamada really lived with black American soldier (but no deserter :o)) who has 11-years-old son. :o)
Most interesting for me is the second story, The piano player´s fingers. Heroine is beautiful and capricious Japanese "queen" who is loved by many American soldiers which slave to her. One of them, who loved her very much, was Leroy, nice young man who played piano for his (and her) amusement. She broke up with him cruelly and he was totaly devasted. He returns into Japan after 2 years as famous pianist who is loved by many women. She falls in mad love with him, but he seeks only revenge on her, cruelly toys with her and tortures her. Their sex has strong SM taste. She doesn´like pain but she loves Leroy and she tries endures it all in hope for his future forgiveness. She lives still with her another boyfriend, tender D. C., who loves her very much. He doesn´t know about Leroy, but he is suspicious that she cheats on him. But he loves her still. And she beginns to like D. C. very much - but she doesn´t love him, this is more pity than love. But she is tender toward him, at first at her life. And she confess her love for Leroy, which is her first love confession for anyone at her life, too. But he wants to leave her and to return to U. S. A. She beggs him to kill her in this case, but he tells her that she will be more suffer as abandoned by him than if she would be dead. She hits him after that and she accidentaly kills him. She returns to D. C. and tries to love him but in her soul she feels herself without Leroy as she would be dead...
It reminds me very much on Snakes and earrings by Hitomi Kanehara, but it is more understable version for me. Heroine is not masochist and Leroy is not sadist by nature, this all is only painful game about revenge of weak dumped lover who managed to become strong and avenge his pain. If he could forgive her, there would be happyend, but he couldn´t do it and he died because it. All in this story is logical and whole plot is very good. I hate Snakes and earrings by Hitomi Kanehara, but I love The piano player´s fingers by Eimi Yamada. :o)

Can't rate a book like this on a one-dimensional scale. I haven't finished it, may not. Finished the title story and one other (there's a third I'm not going to read.) The writing is so-so. Sex, abusive sex, and . . . sex.

Reviews made a great deal of the fact that the protagonist’s love interest is black. Blurbs I’ve read here and there about the author, Eimi Yamada, make it seem that “interracial” themes are big with her. Her black characters are soldiers and sailors in an unnamed port in Japan, probably Yokohama. Stereotyped studs, not particularly bright. The two stories' protagonists are Japanese girls from the wrong side of the tracks. The settings are gritty areas with bars, strip clubs. You get the picture.

The fact that in "Bedtime Eyes" the boy friend, Spoons, is black is far less significant to the story than his miserable family history, his status as a deserter, his street smarts, and the way these marginalizing characteristics mesh with those of the protagonist, Kim. Kim is aroused by Spoon’s dark skin — but also by his physique, size, and violence-prone sociopathy, none of which are particularly black.

The most interesting aspects of the story for me have to do with the setting. There are the casually mentioned facts that Kim, Spoon, and Kim’s friend, Maria, converse entirely in English; Maria regularly performs a nude simulation of masturbation in a club near Kim’s apartment; Kim mentions having sold sex in times of financial adversity. This is a world grittier by far than Murakami’s After Dark. Is it Yokohama? Maybe. Yamada is supposed to have lived there.

The book blurb and reviews laud Yamada’s exploration of the meaning of “love”. There’s tons of sex, a good deal of casual violence, and lots of broken glass in this story, but not much love. I am not clear why this author got all kinds of prizes while most soft porn writers go disregarded by literary juries. If you have any light to shed on the matter, shoot me a comment.

Cho thấp thế không có nghĩa mình ghét cuốn sách này, và tổng thể chắc mình để ở mức 2,5⭐️ làm tròn lên 3⭐️ đi. Lần đầu tiên đọc xong một cuốn sách mà mình tò mò không biết người khác sẽ nghĩ gì về nó, nên mình đã lên trên goodreads xem thử. Nếu giả sử nếu có người khen, thì mình đoán chắc khen yếu tố đào ngũ và tình yêu khác chủng tộc các thứ, còn nếu chê, thì mình cá chắc sẽ chê vì yếu tố tình dục và nội dung tổng thể.
Về cảm xúc của cuốn sách mang lại cho mình thì có, mình cảm thấy nghẹn tới mức mà nếu có ai hỏi mình ổn không thì sẽ ứa hết nước mắt ra mất. Nhưng khi đọc xong nó một lúc lâu và ngồi ngẫm lại, thì mình thấy nó dở nhiều hơn, nhiều yếu tố tình dục nhưng miêu tả qua loa, nhân vật khắc hoạ không rõ tính cách, cốt truyện tổng thể khá nhạt và nhảm. Trên goodreads có nhiều người cho cuốn này 1⭐️ với câu đây là cuốn sách tệ nhất tôi từng đọc.

Cơ mà mình không có ghét cuốn sách, với cả vẫn sẽ đọc thêm sách của tác giả này nữa. Mình thấy nó thích hợp giải trí cho bớt căng thẳng, chứ sẽ không phải cuốn sách mà mình sẽ rec với mọi người. Những câu hay hay thì cũng trích ra được nhiều, nhưng cả cuốn sách thì không. Cuốn này có bản dịch tiếng Việt là Đôi Mắt Ấy Vẫn Ở Trên Giường, giờ cũng không tái bản nữa.

Một khung cảnh đẹp nhưng buồn. Như đa số câu truyện trên những con đường Nhật Bản...

Cho đến khi nhận ra mình yêu Spoon đến nhường nào, anh đã đang dần rời xa Kim.

Yêu Spoon làm Kim đau khổ, cô tự nhận là vậy. Đau khổ vì sợ một ngày nào đó anh sẽ bị bắt vì tội đào ngũ và bỏ cô ở lại. Đau khổ vì nhận ra thế nào là kí ức, thế nào là ghen tuông, thứ tình cảm Kim chưa từng có. Đau khổ vì nhận ra, cô đã yêu Spoon.

Câu chuyện vẽ lại tình yêu không có tương lai giữa cô ca sĩ quán bar người Nhật- Kim, và Spoon- một lính Mỹ da đen đào ngũ. Cho dù có là một tình yêu đầy bạo lực và đau đớn, tình dục và thuốc phiện. Đó vẫn là tình yêu. "Yêu cơ thể ai đó đã là yêu tâm hồn người ta rồi" như Yamada đã nói ra quan điểm của cô về nhục dục.

Yamada viết về sex thẳng thắn, chẳng giấu diếm. Cô không viết truyện sex, cô viết những cảm xúc từ sex mà ra. Vì thế nên cuốn sách này của cô thấm đẫm nỗi buồn hay tinh dịch.

Là cái nháy mắt ấy, như lời chào làm quen của Spoon. Nhờ nó mà cô yêu anh và được anh yêu cả về thể xác lẫn tâm hồn. Và vẫn cái nháy mắt ấy, lời chào tạm biệt cuối cùng anh dành cho cô. Kim yêu Spoon. Cô nói vậy với anh. Nhưng anh chẳng cất lời yêu với cô, chỉ khẳng định nó. Anh không nói yêu cô, ngay cả lần cuối nhìn cô. Anh thể hiện qua cử chỉ, lần đầu tiên và duy nhất. Yêu thân xác cô đã là yêu cô rồi. Nếu thế anh yêu Kim nhiều lắm.

Cô không thể thoát khỏi cái ảo ảnh ấy. "Đôi mắt sáng quắc" ấy như vẫn ở đó, nằm chờ cô trên giường. Kim lên giường nằm và cuộn tròn chăn. Thế là cô mất anh thật rồi.

J'ai vraiment eu un gros malaise avec la représentation stéréotypée de l'homme noir dans cette histoire. J'ai d'abord cherché le sens caché, la critique sociale, je ne sais trop, mais je n'ai rien trouvé au final: tout est au premier degré.
La quatrième de couverture dit que le livre "choqua profondément les lecteurs japonais" à sa sortie et qu'on y parle "crûment" de sexualité: côté sexualité, j'ai lu bien plus "cru" que ça chez des auteurs japonais à peu près contemporains à Yamada. Pour ce qui est d'être choqué, vous le serez probablement pour des raisons différentes des lecteurs japonais de l'époque (1985)...

Tui thật sự không hiểu sao cuốn sách này lại có một mức rating hơi thấp như vậy :)
Có lẽ cái sự trần trụi trong cách dùng từ ngữ và cách nói về sex đã gây một sự khó chịu cho đọc giả chăng? Tui thì không nghĩ vậy, đối với tui, đơn giản đây chỉ là một câu chuyện tình - đẹp và đau - nhưng vẫn có chút hi vọng tươi sáng khi gập sách lại. Một cuốn sách đáng đọc đấy chứ. Chỉ vậy thôi!

Câu chuyện rất ngắn, nhiều nhất vẫn là cảnh giường chiếu của Spoon và Kim, cùng với suy tư của Kim về tình cảm dành cho Spoon. Đó là thứ tình cảm rất mãnh liệt và đau đớn nhưng mối quan hệ giữa hai người lại quá hững hờ và dung tục để được gọi là tình yêu, nhất là ở một thế giới mà "khóc và yêu là hai điều nhục nhã". Nhưng nó vẫn là tình yêu. Từ khao khát thể xác chuyển qua chiếm hữu về tâm hồn và cuối cùng kết thúc với những ký ức quằn quại không bao giờ có thể quên.
"Đôi mắt ấy vẫn ở trên giường" chính là một câu khẳng định chắc nịch cho  sự tồn tại của tình yêu ấy, vẫn thiêng liêng như bất kể từ tình yêu nào khác trên thế giới này.

Mình không có tình cảm đặc biệt gì với cuốn sách này bởi lẽ cái không gian nghệ thuật chưa thực sự rõ ràng. Ranh giới mà tạo ra xây dựng nên nó vẫn mong manh và đầy hoài nghi.
Có hai chi tiết trong câu chuyện gây ấn tượng với độc giả đó là tình cảm không phân biệt sắc tộc giữa Kim và Spoon và tình yêu kỳ lạ mà Maria dành cho Kim (LGBT). Nhưng có lẽ vì không đủ khéo léo mà đối với mình hai chi tiết này không hề đắt giá, nó giống như một cái "mẹo" mà tác giả dùng để đánh đón tâm lý với độc giả, tạo cảm giác có chiều sâu để nhanh chóng kết thúc câu chuyện. Nhưng cũng có thể vì cuốn sách này đc viết rất lâu rồi, mà tư tưởng hồi đó với bây giờ khác xa nhau lắm, nên biết đâu nó đã từng thực sự rất táo bạo, mới mẻ và liều lĩnh thì sao?!!

Definirlo “romanzo erotico” è riduttivo, è la descrizione, frammentata e interrotta da bruschi attimi di piacere, di una relazione violenta, passionale, che si svolge sullo sfondo di alcol e droghe. Spoon, protagonista afroamericano, è violento eppure irresistibile: si riesce a percepire sulla pelle il suo tocco, le sue frasi fredde, la violenza delle botte. Eppure la protagonista rimane, legata a brevi momenti di piacere fisico e da un legame che sente sempre più forte e viscerale. Eppure alla fine Spoon manca, quasi si arriva a credere che forse non era così malvagio, forse poteva cambiare. Ecco come si viene trascinati all’interno della mente, dei pensieri più nascosti, di una donna ingabbiata in una relazione altalenante e burrascosa, che non fornisce soluzioni e che spesso viene macchiata da lividi e denti rotti.
Da leggere, l’etichetta “erotico” è solo una trovata commerciale

Beddo Taimu Aizu ベッドタイムアイズ (1985)

Storia d'amore molto fisica tra la giapponese Kim, che canta jazz nei club, e il disertore nero americano Spoon. Come in Trash ho notato nella protagonista la tendenza a tollerare qualsiasi cosa (anche violenza fisica e verbale) venga dall'Uomo, in cambio di sesso e sporadiche tenerezze: è un atteggiamento che non condivido e spero che non sia autobiografico come altri particolari del libro (la Yamada è sposata con un americano nero ex militare). Non ho trovato il romanzo particolarmente erotico, capisco l'importanza del fatto che sia una donna a parlare di sesso ma si poteva sforzare di più; mi hanno indispettita la frammentarietà e un Giappone molto americanizzato.

The book consists of three stories. The first two vividly describe a sexual relationship of a Japanese woman and an African-American man. The women are usually sexy, beautiful and cold and always have men crawling at their feet. They fool around and eventually fall in love with these rather initially weak men, and then this crazy drama unfolds. The third story was quite good though. Talked about an emotional state of a child who has been brought up in a dysfunctional home. The last couple of pages were a bit weird though. Left you wondering what might happen in a few years in the future between the heroine and the boy given the nature of the author's story writing.

Có thể do tựa của cuốn sách, có thể do những dục vọng trong cuốn sách, cũng có thể là do chính cảm xúc của tôi. Sex trong cuốn sách ấy, nói tục tĩu cũng đúng, nói nghệ thuật cũng chẳng sai, phần lớn dựa vào cảm xúc mỗi lần đọc. Sau cái vẻ trần trụi của những cuộc mây mưa ấy là thứ tình cảm mơ hồ nhưng sâu nặng của những kẻ có vẻ sinh ra là để dành cho nhau nhưng đến cuối cùng lại không phải.

Thêm một ý niệm về yêu thương,và thêm một lần nghĩ về sự yêu thương và được yêu thương...
