Working for the Clearing House, Loreli Potts meets lots of interesting and unusual people. The only problem is most of them want to kill her. Her adversaries are many, varied, and often not human. But there are times when friends and colleagues can be as lethal as her foes. The missions she undertakes in The Tasks of Loreli, show just how deadly they can be. Attending the funeral of a one-time friend's rather shady husband leads to Loreli discovering the new widow is not what she seems, and witnesses the terrible revenge she takes on her dead spouse. When the woman who once saved her life asks a favour, it is impossible for Loreli to say no. But what she thought would be a simple task thrusts her into the middle of a vicious occult war between two covens, and leaves her struggling to survive. The gross negligence of a senior House operative causes a training exercise to wake something long dormant in a London underground station. Called in to help solve the unexpected problem, Loreli finds she is facing a powerful and merciless entity from one of the darkest periods of the city's history. Friends are always good to have, but Loreli learns the hard way they can be deadlier than any enemy.
As ever a wonderful story by this very much underrated author. To be honest, not my preferred genre, yet the writing carries me along on a real adventure.
